Excellent explanation of why supply-side myth continues

This is an excellent overview of the history of supply side economics and why it continues to be perpetuated by the Republican party. Atkinson further explains that we need to move beyond the supply-side (cut taxes and government spending) and the demand-side (government spending to boost demand) economics. Instead, we need to recognize that the fundamentals of our economics have changed to innovation and knowledge-based. Therefore, government policies must respond to this change and look at ways to improve innovation and help entrepreneurs. This, Atkinson explains, cannot come from simply cutting taxes since the availability of capital is not the fundamental problem of our economy. The problem is a lack of domestic investment opportunities. He further explains that the general consensus is that any gains from tax cuts really were realized from the cut in the top rate from 70% to the high 30% that occurred under Reagan. The marginal benefits that could be achieved from further cuts are really a distraction from the real changes that are needed.

An author who hasn't read the supply-siders he attacks

Atkinson begins with the premise that supply-side economics is about taxes and incentives. Evidently, he has never read George Gilder whose recent book "Knowledge and Power" explains for the umpteenth time that capitalism works because it sustains verifiable/ falsifiable experiments by entrepreneurs that produce innovation and progress.

You Can't Be Serious!!!

It's amazing that such liberal twaddle get's published. While I'll be first to admit that I only read sections of the book, I would expect that these were the sections the author felt were best representative of his overall theory. This book is an attack on supply side economics that focuses primarily on the Bush era - an era when Republicans seemed to waffle and even follow the Democrats path. Hardly the perfect example to use since most true conservatives really wouldn't have held either Bush up an shining examples of good policy making. The author uses "facts" that left me scratching my head and wondering what he was thinking. For example, he shows evidence that cutting taxes doesn't increase savings. True, but it does increase spending which in turn greases the economic wheels. Why would you even talk about savings or hours worked (another topic used to prove his points) - these are relative to people's values. Unfortunately, our society has lost many of its core values including savings and a strong work ethic. Both these can be credited to a entitlement society created in part by government give-aways. The entitlement spiral will keep on expanding as people watch others getting freebies and asking themselves why they are working so hard and wanting freebies and entitlements for themselves. This is the new economy - the one that the book ignores. It's also the economy created by years of liberal politics from both sides. The bottom line is don't waste your time on this politically biased book.

My ADHD "bible"

This book was great for me! It was as though the author had been living inside my brain. Some of the issues in this particular book did not particularly pertain to me, but most of them did. I have purchased several of these books and given them to people who have been diagnosed adult ADD or ADHD telling them to return it if they did not like it. If they did like it then they could reimburse me for it. So far 6 of 6 people have sent me a thank you note with a check for repayment. I have just ordered another copy of this book for my fiance to have for his own referance since this book does a much better job of explaining how I think, feel, act etc than I can!
Another book that I read just after being diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is "Safe People" by Cloud and Townsend. It helped me to re-set limits, re-define boundaries, and fine tune my interactions. It is also available on audio!

There are better books

If this is your first ADD book, you'll get a lot out of it. But otherwise you'll find yourself thinking you'd seen the topics put better elsewhere.
For my needs, I think Weiss spends WAY too much time dwelling on the frustration and "abuse" that ADDers have. I'm a newly diagnosed adult, but don't have a lot of emotional baggage like that, that I feel a need to dump. But if you're a "hurtin' pup" in terms of feeling dumped on for your short memory, inability to stick to things, and the like, you could get a lot of support from this book. I think Weiss considers ADDers more fragile that we are, so I felt somewhat talked down to in this book.
I will finish it, just because I don't want to miss anything. And some of the tips for helping you complete projects and stick to your schedule have merit. But most have been covered elsewhere.
BTW, my favorite ADD book so far is Thom Hartmann's "ADD Success Stories". I like the tone, I like his "Hunter/Farmer" theory/metaphor, I like the clinical explanations, and I LOVE the personal stories and tips on how to deal with ADD.

It IS my first book on ADD in adults and it IS useful

In answer to some of the criticism voiced below, I do recognize the limitations of this book. It isn't really that thorough an examination of the problem. What it does do is provide plenty of examples of ADD as it is likely to be manifested in adults, and it begins to address many of the issues and challenges that these people face.
Adults with ADD were likely never diagnosed as children and have developed ways of coping that many would find admirable. However, whatever mechanisms they've come up with to deal with the challenges they have faced thoughout their lives, there is almost always a certain sense of frustration, a sense that one's full potential has not been reached and may never be. Lynn Weiss addresses these concerns and offers hope for many who may never even have realized they were ADD, who perhaps at best sensed that there was something wrong with them but had no idea what and how to cope with it.
With its case studies, informational appendices and with chapters devoted to issues such as coping strategies, relationships and on -the-job experiences, Lynn Weiss offers a very substantial introduction to the topic. I'm sure that some of the other works cited by reviewers below can only add to one's knowledge. This is definitely a good first step, however.

Bracks toyed with the Cellini Rolex on his left wrist, drew a breath through his nose as he looked over Pearce's annoying image and exhaled a disinterested "And?"

"I'm tracking through the Czech Republic at the moment."

"You should have been in London by now. It's been four days since you left the Ukraine."

"I wanted to do some sightseeing."

Bracks closed his eyes and rapped his knuckles against the underside of the desk.

"Just a joke, boss. I missed my flight, so instead I hopped in a car to take me across Europe to London.

I've pulled into Chrastava to have a bite. Did you know this town used to manufacture hand grenades for the Germans during the Second World War?"

"You are a fount of information, Pearce."

"I do pick up things here and there. Though the dialect in these parts changes from mile to mile. There are so many forms of Slavic, it's hard to keep it straight."

Pearce had a dozen or so languages under his belt, which was one of the reasons Bracks tolerated him. Still teasing his college frat boy years, this man. As smart as he was himself, he hadn't the ability, or time, to pick up new languages—a frustrating deficit—so had to rely on Pearce as interpreter.

"Is there a point to this story?" Bracks prompted, rubbing the bridge of his nose with a thumb to make sure his annoyance was broadcasted on screen.

"There is always a point, boss. The whispers in the local watering hole claim that a vampire has been unearthed on a nearby archaeological dig."

"A vamp—" Bracks contemplated hanging up, but then this was probably another of Pearce's jokes. "Very well, I'll bite, so to speak. What in such a rumor could possibly entertain my interest?"

"I don't think it's a rumor. The Gypsies are freaking out. I know the Romani are superstitious and all that jazz. But they seem to really believe that an actual vampire has been discovered."

Superstition. Bracks knew superstition could be a useful weapon. Both for and against him. By using the ingrained beliefs of others, a smart man could ensure the tables were turned in his favor. And he always appreciated favorable odds. "Tell me more."

The boy's feet left the ground. He lost one of his tattered, canvas shoes as his body soared through the air. His father would make him do his brother's chores for a week if he lost that shoe. He was held around the chest from behind, while a man slapped him across his mouth so hard he thought he might lose his front teeth.

The foul-smelling guy behind him muttered, "Quiet, kid. We'll take care of you now."

Take care of him? They were hurting him!

Shoved into the back of a shiny black vehicle, before he could reach to steady himself, he was grabbed by another big man with dark hair and dark clothing. Then his eyes were covered with a dusty cloth and another vile-tasting cloth was shoved in his mouth. They tugged his wrists together with what felt like scratchy rope, and then manhandled him into the seat.

He clawed at the unreachable rope, his fingers too short. But he kept trying. His father had taught him he had to fight for his place in this world, and he'd learned that well enough in school where he was ignored simply because he was Romani. Gypsy garbage.

But no one had ever forcibly taken him like this before. How could he, all of eight years old, stop it? They were big men and he was blindfolded.

The vehicle smelled like gasoline and stale, greasy food. He wanted to be home safe with his nana and his dog, Mutt.

"Not a long ride," the man with the awful breath said, slapping him hard on his leg so he cried out against the cloth in his mouth. "You are wuzho. You'll be helping people in need. Fine boy."

Helping people? He liked to help people because that showed them he was not the garbage others claimed he was. But wuzho? He knew that meant something about pureness or being clean.

Who would help him?

He stopped struggling and tried to breathe through his nose, though the dust and dirt from working in the potato field at the edge of his nana's farm clogged his head and made it difficult to draw in air. His tears soaked the cloth over his eyes, and he choked up a sob. He chewed nervously on the gag.

These men were not nice. They were not going to help people. He'd give up his dog, Mutt, right now to be back in school, taunted and teased by the others.

Would his nana realize he was gone before the sun set? His brother had ditched out, as usual, to go smoke with his friends in the forest. They'd once started a fire on purpose with cigarette cinders and a half a bottle of vodka stolen from one of their parents' cupboards. It hadn't blazed for more than ten minutes before rain had snuffed it out. His brother never got caught. Never got in trouble.

Bet his brother would never get kidnapped by bad people, either. Nobody would touch him. If his brother returned to the field by the end of the day and didn't see him, he might ask his nana about him, he might not. His brother didn't pay much attention to him, other than to shove him out of the way.

The vehicle hit a pothole and his body lurched sideways and smashed against the door. His forehead hit the metal clip on the seat belt and the icy burn of metal digging into his skin made him cry out. But he couldn't hear his voice, only the pounding of his heartbeats.

You'll be helping people in need.

Over and over he repeated the words in his head. Until he believed them.

Garin Braden strolled into the containment room, walled with riveted steel panels, in the basement of a building he rarely visited, but owned for business. He kept a numbers of "offices" across the world. The steel floor clanked dully with each stride he took. The room was humid and smelled of rust and rancid water.

His freelance assistant, Slater, stood waiting for him, hands akimbo. The man was in his thirties, divorced twice, adamant about mixed martial arts and a vegan lifestyle and spent winters in a Tibetan ashram. He possessed no body fat whatsoever. Solid muscle.

Garin peered over Slater's shoulder. In the center of the sixteen-by-sixteen-foot room, a bald and barefooted man tied into a steel chair, sweat and blood on his face, defied him with a hardened gaze. Could either have been from exhaustion or desperate fear. Smelled like fear, but Garin knew to never judge a man by his expression.

"What's his break time?" he asked Slater.

Slater rolled a lazy grin across his narrow face. The stub of a cigar was always stuck at the edge of his mouth like a plug to stop the drool. The cigar seemed like an affront to the man's otherwise austerely healthy lifestyle, but then who was he to judge? "I give him forty-five minutes. An hour, tops."

An hour? Slater was slipping. He may be lean and lanky, but he had fists of iron and a vicious determination to get to the truth. And of all the times for expediency, this was it.

"That ship is out there somewhere," Garin said. "Carrying my merchandise."

They'd lost GPS contact because of a storm off the Mediterranean coast. And Garin had immediately suspected foul play. His equipment was top-of-the-line. Someone had broken communications, and he wanted to know who.

Sometimes his hires were not as top-of-the-line as his equipment. It was a risk a businessman had to take.

"I need to get to that vessel before the Syrian authorities do," he said, stating the obvious.

Or someone less law-abiding within the government would take off with his booty. Well, not his exactly. He was just the middleman. The ship was due to intercept with a buyer, a new client Garin did not want to piss off.

"Will do."

Smacking a tape-wrapped fist into his palm, Slater performed a few fighter-style bounces on the balls of his feet and returned to the sweat-soaked detainee. On the floor near the wall lay a length of thick, rusted chain, and on top of that was a battery-powered drill fitted with a diamond-tipped router bit. Slater didn't often use props; they were for show.

Garin didn't linger. If Slater couldn't get the man to talk—and quickly—the night was going to be a long one. The detainee was a contract agent, he guessed. Someone the government had hired for a one-off surveillance job. And he wasn't sure which government that was, exactly. Usually, such agents' allegiances changed from job to job, and tracking their home base was impossible. They were ghosts for hire.

Three hours later, the man finally broke. It was too late to intercept the ship unless they used heavy artillery. Garin did not want to engage with the Syrian government. He preferred the argument with the client instead.

"Sorry, man." Slater wiped the sweat from his face. Now the chain hung about his thick neck, another man's blood brushing streaks across his pumped biceps. "He was a machine."

"You win some…" Garin let the sentence hang there. Clutching his fingers into a fist he fought the urge to grab Slater and smash his head against the steel wall. He'd wanted to win this one, but he wasn't going to get misty over the lost supply. A bigger, better batch was out there somewhere. New clients were also an easy catch. "Did he cough up a name?"

"Yes, it's one you've heard before."

Garin blew out a heavy breath, not having the patience for Slater's dramatic pause.

Finally, with a wincing tilt of his head, the man said, "Weston Bracks."

Garin let out a hiss.

Should have expected as much. Why hadn't he? Bracks had been a tick on his hide for years, nearing nemesis status, though Garin would never admit to it, nor would he allow any man to best him without retaliation.

Bracks kept coming back for more and more. And Garin's pride would not allow him to give the man a win. This game of cat and mouse had gone beyond annoying.

"It's three in the morning," Garin said. "Thanks for your work. I'll be in touch."

Slater wandered out, leaving cleanup to Garin's morning crew.

"Bracks." He blew out a breath and fisted his opposite palm.

Again. And Garin with a full schedule over the next twenty-four hours. He needed to nab a few hours of sleep before tomorrow's meeting in the Czech Republic, a three-hour drive from his home in Berlin. He never did business close to home, but this was a routine stop to ensure smooth operations. As well, he'd arranged a quick pickup in the area. Hell, since he was driving there he was going to do all the business he could.

Yet Garin doubted he'd catch a single wink now that the bastard had made an appearance in his life again.

Roux, Garin's one-time mentor and sometime adversary, got a good chuckle over his and Bracks's tete-a-tetes. Although they were hardly as civilized as that term implied, and commonly involved one or both of them racking up yet another international felony.

Roux said he was reminded of their—Roux and Garin's—own special "friendship." A dubious connection neither one would ever have guessed would last more than five hundred years. That they would last more than five hundred years. How that was even possible remained a mystery tied into the sword of Joan of Arc and the pair's failure to keep her alive. It was a mystery that confounded Garin Braden to this day.

He sighed.

Maybe he was finally acting like the old man he should be after all his centuries on this earth, but Bracks's latest hit annoyed Garin more than usual. The shipment had been a result of months of groundwork and careful negotiations. And now it was in the hands of the authorities.

"Too much work wiped out in an instant."

Bracks had gone beyond being a thorn in his side, and Garin intended to end this game once and for all.

Early the next day, Garin's entourage made a pit stop before they crossed the German border into the Czech Republic. Stopping in a small town to gas up, they had been offered free doughnuts with a full tank. His men had taken the offer, while Garin couldn't stomach the artificial sweetness. If he was going to destroy his health, he preferred recreational drugs.

Now they drove south of the border and, following the GPS instructions, arrived at an unmarked warehouse by the edge of a wooded area. In the distance, he could see silver flashes of water. Possibly a creek.

Garin strode into the warehouse, noting it was three stories high. The tin roof had holes in spots where birds perched, yet the walls were secure concrete slabs built in prefab sections. Three-quarters of the warehouse was empty. Two bodyguards—his own—flanked him. They were for show and safety. He wasn't so stupid he thought he could waltz in and out again with some new party favors. One of the musclemen was also his driver, the other just plain muscle.

"Monsieur Braden." A thin Bulgarian man wearing a multicolored knit hat with flannel flaps over his ears bowed and pressed his palms together before his chest in the universal sign for namaste. Knee-high riding boots showed a lot of wear and a long red-and-white, zigzag scarf looked like something someone's grandmother might have made if she'd been high on medicinal cannabis. The Bulgarian swept a hand back toward the goods. "Please, look over the product."

The "product" was crammed into the back of a rusted black delivery truck that was scoured with more dents and holes than an Army tanker in Iraq riddled by steel penetrators. The bodyguards assumed stances behind Garin at ten paces, and kept their eyes on the three men who accompanied their host. None were a match to the body shape and strength of his men, but that meant little. A concealed weapon always trumped a swinging fist. Which is why his men carried more than enough artillery to put down a stampede, if necessary.

From the haphazard arsenal pile spilling out of the truck, Garin fished a dusty AK-47. The folding stock swung out freely. Sand spilled from the barrel. Something rattled inside the receiver. And it smelled like…gasoline. This was not good.

He shook his head. He hadn't expected pristine secondhand weapons, but this was pushing his idea of acceptable. And while the assault rifle was a favorite among the military for its durability and ease of use, these weapons were more than a decade old, which shouldn't matter, but Garin guessed they had never seen cleaning oil.

"This is crap," he said, turning to his host.

Knit Cap waved his hands in a salesman's protest. "Oh, no, no, the weapons work perfectly well. Just give it a shake."

"A shake?"

He grabbed a magazine from inside an opened cardboard box stuffed among the weapons and jammed it into the receiver. An easy fit. Expected. These weapons were designed to be durable, if not long-lasting.

Swinging about, Garin aimed at Knit Cap. The man didn't flinch.

Exactly.

Garin ground his back molars together. He was in no mood for this today.

"Your unflinching stance tells me you're confident this one won't fire," he challenged. "I don't like that."

Knit Cap shrugged.

Garin tossed the gun aside. It landed on the pile of weapons in a clatter, sending not only AK-47s sliding to the ground, but also a spill of fine sand he assumed had originated in the deserts of Kabul, which is where this shipment had supposedly come from. "Is this all you've got?"

"It is what you requested! Quality goods. They are in working order, I swear—"

I know there are several writers working under the pseudonym and some of them are very good. This guy isn't one of them. His plots are ok but the writing is atrocious. It's usually possible to tell from the first graceless paragraph that you're in for a long slog but if there's any question who wrote it you'll know as soon as the first gun is handled. You can grab, pick up, draw, point, aim, manipulate, handle or shoot a gun. You can't fist it- the barrel's too small.

Please, for the love of all that's holy, get this man a better editor.

Update: and, having finished the book, I take back what I said about the plot. I'm pretty sure he was about to miss his deadline because the resolution couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes of thought. I get that Garen's not a nice man but Anna's willingness to allow a horrific crime to just disappear without finding the rest of the people involved, then to take the primary credit for someone else's work, doesn't make her any better.

Attention to detail is lacking as well. She was in a Romoni hotel room in The Czech Republic fighting bad guys and her sword gets caught in a sampler that says "Home Sweet Home". She doesn't speak the language but she manages to interrogate people who don't speak English.

These books aren't Tolstoy but sometimes I just want frothy fun and I don't like romances. But there are minimal standards even for froth. If someone picked up this book before any of the others, I don't they'd go on to read more.

Not up to usual Rogue Angel standards

Writing was choppy - didn't flow. Story was "forced" and didn't contain the depth of historical details typically found in the series. Annja wasn't portrayed as elegantly tough as usual in these stories. Made myself finish the book in case it improved, but it didn't.

An adventure series done right, Annja Creed kicks tail.

Another great Annja Creed adventure, I have been a fan since the first one, I have the entire collection and an always looking forward to the next outing. The books in this series are well written and are always a page turner, these adventures would make a great film series in my opinion, Hollywood should start looking to books for film ideas, because a lot of the films that are being put out presently suck and lots of books wind up being good reads and would translate well to the big screen if done properly.

Even better when supplemented with other books

This book gives an excellent overview of how algo trading works. Though the author would not give specific strategies, readers can get example algorithmic strategies from "Algorithmic Trading: Winning Strategies and Their Rationale" by Ernest Chan. Chan's book has mean reversion strategies and momentum strategies. If you want a trend following algorithm, you can look up "Following the Trend: Diversified Managed Futures Trading" by Andreas Clenow. If you are not afraid of learning the "R" language, you can try machine learning algorithms for stock trading in "Data Mining with R: Learning with Case Studies" by Luis Torgo. Happy Algo trading!

What's under the hood

In my opinion, this book plays a valuable role in the discussion of quantitative trading.
It is not a how-to handbook, although wannabe quants would be well served by reading it.
Anyone who is not a quant but is considering investing with a quantitative manager owes their clients a duty of understanding the potential investment,
and "Inside the Black Box" does an excellent job of laying out the important issues.
It can help a quant manager understand how to effectively describe his or her process to investors,
and can help an investor understand how to probe for the right level of detail when evaluating a manager.
As a systematic manager, I would want my investors to have read this book.

I know Rishi well, and have been through his due diligence process, which is famous for its depth and focus.
The many years of deep review of many systematic managers shows its results in that he has distilled the best practices into the right (in my opinion) abstractions.

This new edition has added quite a bit of material on "high frequency trading", a topic of some importance and controversy.
He (assisted by his brother, who has deep insight into the HFT world) lays out the key issues.
I may disagree with him on interpretation, opinion and consequences, but the material here contributes to the debate.

Some minor quibbles are just a matter of the right level of inclusion and detail.
For example, in Chapter 5 (Transaction costs) there is no discussion of adverse selection and opportuniIy cost,
nor much advice on how to actually measure and model market impact.
But one could write a full book on transaction cost, and indeed, such books exist.

I recently read Mauboussin's book "The Success Equation", which provides a good explanation of the problem of distinguishing skill from luck.
In my opinion, Rishi could have added additional value by discussing how one can get a more accurate estimate of manager skill for a quant
manager than for most discretionary managers.

This is a valuable book though it will not train you to become a successful quant.
You will understand the concepts underlying investing and how quants leverage
computational power in order to develop a scientifically driven investment process.
If you invest in hedge funds, you may learn how to improve your due diligence by focusing
on the meaningful issues underlying success for systematic managers.

Highly thought-provoking and pleasurable

This book is both thought-provoking and pleasurable to read. I run a quant trading operation and the book made me reflect on the performance drivers for our strategies, for other quant strategies, and for hedge fund strategies in general.

I found the following particularly insightful: (1) observations on the relationship of value trades to carry strategies; (2) discussion of order types and market microstructure; (3) conceptualization of August of 2007; (4) process for evaluating quant managers and their process; (5) brilliant taxonomy of alphas.

It's not a book one reads to mine for strategy ideas. It's a book one reads to understand the quant space. Required reading for our new hires and summer interns.

Great Book for Beginners

This is a great starter book for someone wanting to learn about yogic techniques.The book is easy to read and understand. This book does not require the reader to be knowledgeable about Sanskrit and some of the other riddles of the East. There are some very powerful practices to learn in the book. Stay focused and consistent with these practices and new windows will open to you.

Helmut Holzhey is professor emeritus at the University of Zurich. His books on Kantianism include Kants Theorie der Erfahrung (Kant's Theory of Experience) and Cohen and Natorp. In 2004, in recognition of his work on the Marburg School of Neokantianism, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Marburg.Vilem Mudroch is a research associate at the University of Zurich. His publications on Kant include Kants Theorie der physikalischen Gesetze (Kant's Theory of the Laws of Physics) as well as several articles and book reviews.

Useful Resource for Neophyte and Intermediate Student of Kantian Philosophy

This volume has proven to be an exceptional reference work, especially, when I was beginning my study of Kant's critical works. Many find Kant's philosophy to be convoluted, whether because of the language used or the concepts. In either case, Holzhey and Mudroch's dictionary takes care of both of these issues, and to a very large extent. While I have not read the entirety of the dictionary from front to back, I have found that, as far as my needs are concerned, the dictionary has proven nearly exhaustive; and what I have found the dictionary lacking in, I have been able to find in other secondary handbooks, such as Caygill's dictionary.

The best thing about this volume is that it has proven useful for helping me get a grasp of the terminology and larger Kantian framework through its accessible definitions and continual referencing (to the primary sources) and cross-referencing (internal to the dictionary). The latter of these is achieved by emboldened terms, letting the reader know when key terms are included in the dictionary. The dictionary also helps build an historical context, so that any reader with a superficial knowledge of the critical corpus may get a handle of where Kantian philosophy fits into the bigger, more inclusive picture. For example, there are entries that cover Newton and secondary authors on Kantian literature (e.g., Strawson). Moreover, the introduction to the text, I found, is very informative. Finally, the end-of-text materials are particularly helpful, and these include: a thoroughgoing chronology of Kant's publications, a selection of important translated words that are listed in German-English couples, and, what I deem, a first-rate bibliography. Combined, all of these features have made this text a continued resource in my studies.

The unique characteristics of universities as organizations are discussed and the leadership experiences of six well-known university presidents are analyzed within an orignal framework of leadership. Just as John Kennedy's Profiles in Courage considered the notion of political courage within the institutional setting of Congress, this book explores leadership within the context of the modern American university. The roles of persuasion and communication are highlighted as the author weaves the principal patterns from each of the six case studies to the situational conditions that faced these extraordinary individuals. Padilla offers valuable suggestions on how to improve selection of leaders and increase organizational effectiveness.
The author's plan follows three circles that overlap to form its basic framework: 1. The university as a complex organization; 2. Leadership - its patterns, theories, and commonalities; and 3. Case studies of exemplary leaders, which highlight their early experiences and actions. The overlap of the three circles defines the conclusions and synthesis. Each leader's story covers four areas: Childhood background; formal schooling/education; senior leadership roles and major defining events, successes, and failures; and forecasts for higher education and its leadership. The book includes an assortment of public and private universities, which provides a diversity of leaders who face significant differences in terms of control, financing, and oversight. This diversity allows for more useful comparisons and contrasts.

ARTHUR PADILLA is professor of business management in the College of Management, North Carolina State University, Raleigh. He was previously vice president of the UNC system. Ups and downs of some notable university presidents

The author says that Profiles in Leadership is modeled after Profiles in Courage ... stimulating me to go back and read this book that I first read in Junior High School. (I liked it then and liked it even more now, but that is another story.) Although the stories about academic leaders is interesting, it isn't quite as engrossing as Profiles in Courage. Nevertheless, there are some interesting examples of challenges these university presidents faced and how it influenced their careers. In most cases, the challenges stand out more than the successes, but the book also focuses on qualities that the author attributes to their leadership skills.

The book provides brief biographies of six college presidents who served as leaders of institutions with distinct problems and opportunities. The example I found most interesting was the perspective on Clark Kerr, detailing how he rose through the ranks to President of the University of California then was "Fired with enthusiasm" by the governor of California, Ronald Reagan. Although his influence on the California Master Plan for higher education is well known, the last minute brokering involved in getting it passed provides insight into why the plan has withered with age. Other examples focus on how athletics problems can doom an otherwise successful president, political pitfalls of countering powerful alumni, and other challenges.

These biographies provide interesting perspectives into success strategies and potential pitfalls of university presidents. However, I was less convinced by the argument that the leadership skills of these presidents was determined by their childhood experiences -- a set of commonalities that may simply reflect the timeframe of their presidencies vs a script for nurturing future leaders.

An original study on leadership.

I'm the head of a small, non-profit organization so I was not sure whether this book would actually be of much interest. But as one of the reviewers on the book-jacket writes, this book should be very useful to people outside universities as well. It is well-written and very engaging. What makes it especially appealing is the author's ability to take "academese" and convert it into understandable English. His chapter on leadership is one of the most original I have seen and the discussion of "resiliency" is fascinating. He also presents six detailed case studies and each is written essentially to stand alone. The first three chapters lay out a conceptual blueprint and this makes each case easier to interpret. His use of compelling anecdotes and well-researched historical passages really bring the cases to life. Highly recommended.

Solid Presentation of the Leadership Process

Even though this is essentially a research book it is very well

written and contains a solid presentation of the leadership process. The chapter summarizing leadership research is the best I've seen and provides an original framework around which to read the case studies. There has been a lot of academic research on leadership over the last twenty years and much of it is incomprehensible and so specific as to be relatively useless but the author's original synthesis of this work

is excellent. The cases studies are not only very entertaining but they follow this basic leadership framework developed in the theory chapter. The chapter on the University as a complex organization is also very good and highly readable. I recommend the book both as an essay on leadership and as an analysis of university presidency.
