Remote: Office Not Required, by Jason Fried, David Heinemeier Hansson

The “work from home” phenomenon is thoroughly explored in this illuminating new book from bestselling 37signals founders Fried and Hansson, who point to the surging trend of employees working from home (and anywhere else) and explain the challenges and unexpected benefits.  Most important, they show why – with a few controversial exceptions such as Yahoo -- more businesses will want to promote this new model of getting things done.

The Industrial Revolution's "under one roof" model of conducting work is steadily declining owing to technology that is rapidly creating virtual workspaces and allowing workers to provide their vital contribution without physically clustering together.  Today, the new paradigm is "move work to the workers, rather than workers to the workplace."  According to Reuters, one in five global workers telecommutes frequently and nearly ten percent work from home every day. Moms in particular will welcome this trend.  A full 60% wish they had a flexible work option. But companies see advantages too in the way remote work increases their talent pool, reduces turnover, lessens their real estate footprint, and improves the ability to conduct business across multiple time zones, to name just a few advantages.  In Remote, inconoclastic authors Fried and Hansson will convince readers that letting all or part of work teams function remotely is a great idea--and they're going to show precisely how a remote work setup can be accomplished.

--Pamela Slim, author of Escape from Cubicle Nation

Mainly relevant to employees and traditional companies
By NickK
I run an established small but growing remote business. Given how helpful Getting Real and Rework were for small, growing businesses, I assumed Remote would be full of great actionable strategies for being an effective remote team.

While there were 1 or 2 minor tidbits of useful information, the vast majority of the book is aimed at why non-remote companies should become remote, and how employees can convince their bosses to become remote.

There is very little useful information for someone who is already convinced a remote company is the way to go, and is looking for strategies for managing a remote company effectively.

i don't feel like this book has aged well
By seattle_sprocket
i don't feel like this book has aged well. the book as a whole is an incredibly quick read, but a lot of the learnings aren't groundbreaking. additionally, all the supporting examples mainly fall along the lines of "because it worked for us." if you're curious about the content of the book, go ahead and pick it up, but there are a lot of better and more in-depth books that cover personal management and how it relates to a professional life.

Good read, not as impactful as ReWork
By Mittun
Not as actionable or inspiring as Fried's other book ReWork, but this one is still pretty good. My entrepreneur friend who worked solo said it didn't really apply to him, but we have implemented some of these strategies into my agency. Most of them are wide encompassing ideas, but he does go into specific details as well. Overall a good read to add to your collection, but it's an obvious 2nd Place to ReWork.

Safe In His Hands
By Nasreen Jahan
Safe in His Hands

SAFE IN HIS HANDS by debut author Amy Ruttan is a Mills & Boon and Harlequin Medical series release for September 2013.

Dr. Charlotte James calls her ex-fiance to help save her best friend's baby. Because he was the very best there was. He was the top of his specialty and Amy respected him.

Even though he had walked when she'd miscarried their baby and needed him the most. He had gone to the job in a big city hospital as a top-notch surgeon.

Five years later, Dr. Quinn Devlyn had a bad accident and now he was not very confident of his surgical capabilities. He had taken a sabbatical from his position when he received a call for help from Amy. Would it be a chance to rekindle their romance? Could they find their way back?

SAFE IN HIS HANDS is a sensational romance, which is filled with astounding medical drama. Author Amy Ruttan made us visualize the story with her flawless story telling. The emotional and sensory details are exquisitely done and the sensuality in the love scene just sizzles. This is a story about recovering from past guilt and grief and moving forward. The premise was wonderful and story moved along very fast.

Highly recommended for all lovers of medical romance.

Feeling safe in someone else's hands is something that does not come along on a daily basis. You need to get to know the person first and truly connect with them before you even might reach a level of thinking you feel safe in their hands.

For some it takes years for others it can happen in weeks, however long it make take there is always the threat of an event taking place that could destroy that perfect feeling-safe-bubble, and trying to mend it might end up in more heartache then happiness.

In this read from author Amy Ruttan we meet Charlotte, once upon at time she had it all with I-need-you-so-much- Quinn, they were happy and expecting their very own little miracle. Yes, they both had to learn to adjust to the idea but it seemed to be going well, until the hands of fate took it all away.

Quinn walks away never to be seen again but Charlotte does not lie down and admit defeat, she gets up and fights back to make a success of her life and not wallow over the baby or man she lost.

But now she needs his help to save her best friends baby. Brining him back also means she will be bringing back into her life all the feelings of hurt and anger right along with all the memories of long hot passionate nights. But she is much stronger this time around and she can do this, she has no other choice. That is until she sees him, and all hope is lost. Can she convince him to stay this time or will she be the one running?

The character of Charlotte was a true heroine. She does not let anything get her down to the point where she lets the world see it, she rather holds it together as much as humanly possible and cracks on her own out of sight. This showed me as reader that she is not only strong and able to face whatever situation comes her way but that she is the type of person you want in your life, for she will hold it all together for the sake of keeping you calm, perfect Dr. material.

I was saddened by her tragic loss of the past, and yes I cried for her, but what the author did was use this to help her see her own mistakes and really listen and observe Quinn. Totally loved that touch Amy!

The character of Quinn was definite save-me-all-night-long hero material. But underneath all the yummy delicious muscle there was also a man of so many layers created by the author that it left me feeling emotionally drained in the best kind of way. I wanted to know more, learn more, not only the reason he walked away but the true meaning of him guarding his feelings.

The author did a incredible job at taking both characters and letting the best of them shine through. Both characters went on a journey of self discovery and I simply loved the outcome.

The backdrop settings were exquisitely described by the author and I felt as if I could touch the wilderness and feel the chills. The dialogue was emotional, passionate, sweet and sensual, it hit all the right notes.

I am taking away a message of opening up your heart can lead to heartache but it might also lead you straight back into the happiness you have been missing.

I highly recommend this read for lovers of medical related romance reads, fans of old lovers reuniting and for anyone looking for a author who writes her books with so much depth and emotion it will touch your soul and leave you with a burning feeling to seek more.

More than just a love story
By Karen Pick
This story touched me on several levels. The h/h were both in need of TLC and emotional support and they came through for each other in a completely believable way. The medical drama was excellent and didn't overwhelm me with a lot of unnecessary information. Instead, it invited me in. I was fascinated by the completely believable interaction of all the doctors, not just the h/h. Also, I won't spoil it for new readers, but the surgery scene was amazing from start to finish and actually made me catch my breath at one point. You'll know what I mean when you read that section. I definitely recommend this book.

The A to Z of Wittgenstein's Philosophy (The A to Z Guide Series), by Duncan Richter

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was undoubtedly one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century, and perhaps of any century. He was also a fascinating, charismatic, and irritating man. His philosophical ability was recognized almost immediately by Bertrand Russell, and during his lifetime his work influenced first logical positivism and then ordinary language philosophy. Since then it has also become central in post-analytical philosophical thought. Beyond the world of academic philosophy it has inspired playwrights, poets, novelists, architects, filmmakers, and biographers.

The A to Z of Wittgenstein's Philosophy is intended for anyone who wants to know more about the philosophy and the life of this enigmatic thinker. The book contains an introductory overview of his life and work, a timeline of the major relevant events in and after his life, an extensive bibliography, and, above all, an A-Z of ideas, people, and places that have been involved in his philosophy and its reception. The dictionary is written with no particular agenda and includes entries on philosophers (and others) who influenced Wittgenstein, those he influenced in turn, and some of the main figures in contemporary Wittgenstein scholarship. Suggestions for further reading are also included, as well as a guide to the literature on Wittgenstein and a bibliography broken down by subject area.

a useful, broad-ranging reference
By Moeder Dao
The hardcover edition of Richter's dictionary has a different title: "Historical Dictionary of Wittgenstein's Philosophy".

It might be useful to compare it to Hans-Johann Glock's "Wittgenstein Dictionary" in the Routledge Philosophers Dictionaries series. Richter's dictionary is broader, covering biographical and historical background. It has a good introduction and bibliography. It's perhaps the more helpful of the two for the newcomer to Wittgenstein. Glock's dictionary provides longer and deeper articles on Wittgenstein's terminology and ideas but little historical background. Glock represents a somewhat more mainstream interpretation of Wittgenstein, while Richter is affiliated with an alternative approach championed by scholars like Cora Diamond and James Conant - though Richter is careful to acknowledge these different perspectives. Both dictionaries are excellent and complement one another.

A reviewer of the hardcover edition suggests that Richter's dictionary is the "best" introduction to Wittgenstein. There can be no such thing, since different readers will come to Wittgenstein with very different backgrounds and questions, but Richter's book is indeed very helpful. If you're looking for a narrative introduction, Richter himself recommends two outstanding ones: Joachim Schulte, "Wittgenstein: An Introduction" (SUNY Press, 1992) and Severin Schroeder, "Wittgenstein: The Way Out of the Fly-Bottle" (Polity Press, 2006).

Review
For me, it's rare to read a work that is truly life-changing to the point that I think everyone I know should read it, but Jane Sigloh's Like Trees Walking is exactly that. Her writing is so conspicuously intimate . . . so rich with meaning and wisdom that I kept asking myself, 'Why am I only now learning about this author?' . . . A literary treasure that is uplifting and encouraging…and edifying and I think many of the people I know would be blessed to read it. (Reader Views)

[Sigloh's] short essays are at times humorous, occasionally haunting, frequently memorable but always hopeful, and it is this rare mix that makes them so readable, so enjoyable, so quotable, so commendable. (The Dallas Morning News)

It is a book to be read, savored, and given away. Each copy deserves a long life of being passed from caring friend to aging friend. . . . Each devotional essay is a well constructed composition characterized for candor, caring, and compassion. . . . By drawing from insights of scripture, poetry, fiction and philosophy, Sigloh challenges her readers to use 'the second half of life' to reinforce spiritual perspectives, to identify what really matters and look for what God is doing. Relish her insights, and then pass the book to a friend. (The Christian Librarian, Fall 2009)

Like Trees Walking: In the Second Half of Life
By Jocelyn Connors
This book is truly a gift to women and men who are "in the second half of life," and it would also be enlightening for those "youngsters" who have difficulty understanding and dealing with elders. The prose is beautiful, and the author's sense of humor and careful research into what takes place in the aging process makes for delightful reading! It is unique and refreshing to have such an engaging piece of literature that addresses over half of the population. Bravo to Jane Sigloh, the author.

Like Trees Walking: In the Second Half of Life
By Betty G. Ware
This is a beautifully written book. There is humor and compassion in the author's personal anecdotes, which she skillfully relates to appropriate scriptural passages. Throughout, the book conveys peace, serenity and thanksgiving for the gift of this life and acceptance through faith in the one to come.

A great book!
By Harry W. Shipps
This book is really wise and wonderful ~ the author has a lively intellect and gift for story-telling. Each chapter tells an engaging tale of casual incidents of daily life, the extraordinary events too, often from the author's experience. Tales, told with insight and generous compassion, that expand into larger meaning and are enhanced by her comprehensive knowledge of Scripture and theology. An absolutely delightful wit threads through it all. She stirs the imagination and draws us into reflection. Reminds us of the wonders and goodness of creation and the gift of relationships, and that life is a journey ~ whatever our age, we're not just what we have been but what we are becoming. A must-read for the not-so-young, and the young too.

What made ancient cities successful? What are the similarities between modern cities and ancient ones? The Social Construction of Ancient Cities offers a fresh perspective on ancient cities and the social networks and relations that built and sustained them, marking a dramatic change in the way archaeologists approach them. Examining ancient cities from a “bottom up” perspective, the authors in this volume explore the ways in which cities were actually created by ordinary inhabitants. They track the development of urban space from the point of view of individuals and households, providing new insights into cities' roles as social centers as well as focal points of political and economic activities.

Analyzing various urban communities from residences and neighborhoods to marketplaces and ceremonial plazas, the authors examine urban centers in Africa, Mesoamerica, South America, Mesopotamia, the Indian subcontinent, and China. Collectively they demonstrate how complex networks of social relations and structures gave rise to the formation of ancient cities, contributed to their cohesion, and sustained their growth, much as they do in modern urban centers.

The authors' analyses draw from ancient texts as well as archaeological surveys and excavations of urban architecture and other material remains, including portable objects for daily use and comestibles. They show clearly how early urban dwellers consciously developed dense interdependent social networks to satisfy their needs for food, housing, and employment, forged their own urban identities, and generally managed to thrive in the crowded, bustling, and competitive environment that characterized ancient cities. Not least of all, they suggest how urban leaders and urban dwellers negotiated a consensus that enabled them to achieve both mundane and extraordinary goals, in the process establishing their unique ritual, legal, and social status.

Just what I was looking for
By bob r
A terrific book. I was mostly interested in the ANE essays and I thought they were well-detailed and researched. In fact, I saw the essay by Keith cited elsewhere. The essays that I read were extremely valuable for subsequent archaeological books that I read including Wooley.

Holly gripped her mother's hand. The licorice-like scent of laudanum assaulted her nostrils. How could something to ease terrible pain smell so sweet? "Momma…"

"Holly, in my Bible.. " Her mother's chest rose with a great deal of effort then fell. "There's a letter." Another labored breath. "Explains all…" She paused. "Forgive me." Momma's deep green eyes darkened.

"Momma, there is nothing to forgive." Holly grasped her mother's hand tighter. Her own breathing labored as she eased closer to her mother on the bed.

"Your father.. " The words were raspier.

"He's right here, Momma."

"No, real father…" Holly looked over at her father. His dark brown eyes pierced hers and his lips parted. His drawn features flickered with the glow from the oil lamp.

"Emmett Landers…schoolteacher…" Holly's gaze returned to her mother.

"Allison," her father interrupted, "I'll tell her. You relax."

Real father? Momma must be delusional from all the laudanum and other pain medications. All Holly's life she'd lived in this house on the Savannah coast. Her father was always there. From the earliest of her memories he'd been at her side encouraging her, loving her. Mother must be confused.

Father caressed her mother's forehead, brushing away the red strands, and kissed her gently.

"Forgive me, Holly. Forgive me." Her eyes were wide with fear.

"I forgive you, Momma." What else could she say? She'd been called to her mother's room, having spent the past hours in the kitchen taking care of Momma's chores. Tiffany, her sister, was old enough to help, and she'd done some of the work, but Holly wanted her to continue with her studies.

Father nodded and Mother's eyelids closed. Her lips moved. No discernible words passed through. Holly's stomach twisted. Tears burned the edges of her eyes. Momma was dying and there wasn't anything anyone could do. God, where are you? Why are you letting this happen to such a good woman?

Bryce paced outside the Grahams' bedroom door and wrung his hat. It wasn't right that someone as kind and loving as Mrs. Graham—a woman he'd known and admired his entire life—would have been run over by a careless wagon driver. The creak of the door captured his attention. He watched Holly step backward out of the room, her red ponytail draped between her slumped shoulders. She paused and braced herself against the doorjamb. He closed the distance between them. She turned. He wrapped her in his embrace. "I am here, Holly." Her swollen emerald eyes glanced up into his. Her delicate porcelain skin flushed with emotion. He escorted her to the parlor. "She's dying, Bryce."

"I know."

She burrowed her gaze upon his and knitted her eyebrows. Holly nodded and closed her eyes. A fresh flood of tears ran down her cheeks. "I don't understand why."

"Nor do I." He brushed a strand of her fiery red hair behind her ear. His fingers tingled. This was the closest he'd been to her in years…except in his dreams. He'd been waiting two years for her twenty-first birthday to court her, per her father's request.

Her brilliant green eyes sparkled from tears. "Momma's dying and, and."

"Shh, you don't need to say a thing, Holly." He pulled her into his arms as they sat on the settee. He didn't care if it was proper or not. She was hurting—and she was his best friend. Maybe more, someday.

While Holly was closer to his sister Catherine's age, it had always been he and Holly who would run off on adventures, read the same stories, engage in long conversations and dream with one another. Only after he'd left for college had he realized his love for Holly was more than that of an unofficial big brother.

She placed her hand on his chest and pushed back. "I am frightened. Momma said."

He could sense the fear, as if her life were crumbling. "Whatever it is can wait, Holly. Let me give you my strength to help you through this." She eased back into his embrace and placed her head on his shoulder. He resisted opening his heart to her, as he had resisted for the past two years.

He glanced around the room, so familiar. His gaze settled on the leg of the table that had a notch in it. A notch he and Holly were responsible for. His backside and hers had smarted for quite a while after Mrs. Graham caught them playing with their wooden swords as French musketeers in the formal sitting room. The notch in the table leg was nothing compared to the rare handblown glass vase they had knocked over during their battle.

"I brought a pot of Mother's venison stew. I see you have already started some chicken and dumplings."

She nodded.

"Mother said she would visit tomorrow and lend a hand around the house. I will take care of the chores in the barn. Is there anything else I can do?"

"No." She tossed her head from side to side. She pushed away from his shoulder and wiped her eyes with the backs of her hands.

He pulled out a clean white handkerchief. "Here."

She accepted the cloth and dabbed her sparkling green eyes. "I should get back to the kitchen before the dinner burns."

"As you wish. You are certain there is nothing else I can do for you?"

She smiled. "No, not yet. I may need my best friend, though."

"Anytime, any place. You know how to get in touch with me." He leaned over and kissed the top of her head, as he had done when they were mere children. "I will return before I leave."

"Thank you."

"'Tis my pleasure, my lady." He stood and bowed with the flair of a French musketeer. "I am and always will be your servant." He took her hand and helped her to her feet.

Holly laughed. "I seem to remember quite a few games where you were in charge."

"But of course, I am the oldest." He chuckled.

Holly rolled her eyes heavenward.

It was good to see her smile, even for a moment. "Alas, I must excuse myself and be off to ye ole barn."

"And I to slave over the stove."

not impressed
By JenJune
The dialog felt stilted, the characters said the same things over and over, she couldn't make up her mind. I think I love him. Oh, I do love him. Do I really love him? Oh, wait, why am I calling a complete stranger Daddy? Yes, I do love him. But, I can't handle thinking about more than one thing at a time so maybe I don't love him. Aaaargh! Honestly, I couldn't figure out what he saw in her. Of course he wasn't much better randomly declaring his love, then avoiding her. One of the few books I have read that I had to force myself to finish. For a relatively short book it felt very long.

Courting Holly Reading Review
By Hailz15
Courting Holly is a good book about faith and trying to do what's right. Holly battles between a very real fight inside of her that makes you wonder if she will prevail. Coleman is a good writer, nicely detailed, but keeps her book(s) short so as not to lose intrest. I would recommend this book, and her other works, to any reader.

From Publishers Weekly
While having a baby is often presumed to be one of the most profoundly joyful and intimate events in a marriage, this refreshing book examines the emotional upheaval that usually comes with it. Having interviewed more than 200 couples repeatedly over a 10-year period, Nordin reminds us that the birth of a child--even if it's a second or third child--plunges a couple into new rhythms, roles and responsibilities. The convergence of physical and emotional changes, sleep deprivation, constant child care, increased housework and worry over new financial responsibilities often results in "frequent disagreements, an emotional distance, and a stalemate to cooperation" between new parents. With less time and energy for each other and themselves, Nordin contends, new parents frequently lose both the sexual and emotional intimacy they previously enjoyed, at a time when they most need to pull together. These challenges, and unrealistic assumptions, end many marriages in the early years of parenthood. Offering hope that parenthood can provide "opportunities for growth and a deepening of the marital commitment," Nordin examines many common issues in detail with concrete examples for resolving them. Her weakest chapter relies on dubious scare tactics to steer couples away from divorce, lest their children's lives be ruined forever. Her strongest argument, reserved for a brief last chapter, is that the long-term rewards and benefits of weathering storms in the parenting process ultimately outweigh the growing pains and sacrifices made along the way. From Library Journal
Child advocate Nordin interviewed more than 200 sets of parents and 100 professionals for this study, which pinpoints the physical and emotional changes that occur in couples after having a baby. Stresses like money shortages and physical exhaustion are also covered. Using examples from her interviews, Nordin examines changes in intimacy, communication, and sex. The final third of the book offers helpful suggestions for dealing with these changes. Although she discusses divorce as an overly frequent outcome, Nordin strongly urges couples to deal with challenges as they arise and find the strength to honor their commitment to their marriage and children. Dwenda K. Gjerdingen (family practice, Univ. of Minnesota Medical Sch., St. Paul) wrote a foreword and provides medical advice. This will certainly interest new parents and those about to become parents. Recommended for public libraries.

Stereotypes aren't useful
By Real Reader
This book was a disappointment. The author is so deeply entrenched in gender stereotyping that she offers advice like this: "Praise your partner's strengths. If your husband does a good job quieting the baby, tell him so. If your wife demonstrates selflessness and patience as she cares for the baby, let her know you admire or appreciate those qualities" (33). Thus, the father gets praise for quieting the baby, but the mother must be "selfless" and "patient" in order to earn praise. Even my husband laughed heartily at this one! I was, frankly, shocked that a book written in 2000 could offer advice based on such simplistic male/female gender divisions. Sure, it acknowledges that new parents are exhausted and that marriage is a challenge, but it offered no advice I found useful.

A Must Read for New and Parents To Be
By Paul Kruse
This is an awesome book and should be read by anyone that either has young children or is considering starting a family. It covers everything from how your feelings toward each other may change to getting sex back into your marriage. My wife and I have given this book to many of our pregnant friends and plan to keep copies on hand for just such occasions. We loved the book and know anyone that reads it will enjoy it and understand better what impact your child will have on your life.

Don't listen to those who gave 1 star.
By Jacob Connery
For your own sake, don't listen to those who have given a bad review.

They down the book over being "too negative" but it's better you hear about the "negative" from this book than to stick your head in the sand until you get handed divorce papers.

Me and my wife had our first baby 9 years into our marriage. Before the baby we had a strong connection and a fulfilling life/relationship. We both had friends, fun, good careers, a house and cars, and more money than we needed, but we were missing something. We wanted a baby, and so we had one.

We are so happy we had our baby. She is such a good kid and we love her so much. However...

Although a baby is a WELCOME intrusion in your life and relationship, it IS still an intrusion, and it has a huge impact on everything. Before the baby you are lovers, but after it you are parents. Your role is different, your spouse's role is different, and you will have all kinds of complicated psychological reactions to it. What do you think of when you envision the word "mother" or "father" compared to the word "woman" or "man"? You will look at yourself differently and your partner as well, whether you want to or not.

You will not be willing to neglect your baby.

If you must neglect something because you are so tired, busy, emotionally drained, etc, etc, it will be yourself and your partner. If you have love and attention to give, it will go to the baby first and your partner will get the leftovers. Not only will you prioritize it this way, but you will feel like this is the "right" way to be. Before we had our baby we even told each other we would put each other first. That unrealistic pledge couldn't survive past the birth. Psychology is a sneaky one.

Six months ago my wife and I had gotten so distant that our flame of love was just a flicker in the dark. We had spent time together, done nothing to wrong each other, not (intentionally) hurt each other, but had become disconnected anyway. It was not a matter of time spent together, fighting, etc, etc. It was simply that we had allowed our baby to take center stage in our lives and we were left straining to hear each other across the space between. We never thought it could happen to us. No one did. Our relationship had become ashes with maybe one little spark of love smoldering beneath. In our hearts we blamed each other. That's when I read this book and we discovered what we were going through was normal.

Flash forward to now. My baby is now a 2.5yr little girl, and just the thought of her fills me with joy and wonder. It always has. We made it through that time, and although divorce papers never came out, it came close. Relationships take a lot of nurturing, and the more under-nourished you are the less you can give of yourself to nurture it. So it was hard to reconnect but we gave it everything we had left, refocussed on each other, and brought that pheonix out of the ashes. We are happy and healthy again.

I truly beleive without this book we would be a broken family today. We would have kept blaming each other and been hurt and bitter.

When I read this book, page after page I was just thinking, "That's so true, that's so true." I was also thinking, "God I wish I had read this sooner."

This book is not anti-baby. It is anti-"broken family". We have all seen MANY relationships broken by the first baby. This book tells you what is happening to you and your relationship so you have a chance to address it. It doesn't go too far into telling you HOW to address it, but how to address it is the easy part. When people run into problems is when they don't even know there is something to address, or the nature of the problem. The disconnection that occurs from a baby is something you won't realize until it is too late, and you will probably never "blame" the baby. I mean, how can you blame a baby?

Sure, some couples won't have any problems, but I don't think that is the norm. If you know a couple that has had a baby, or is having a baby, make sure they read this. You will probably save their future relationship.

Praise for Irwin Shaw:

Acceptable Losses is more than acceptable.
By Becky
My husband and I were recently having a conversation and one of us used the term "acceptable loss" which inspired a discussion about this book. He read it years ago and still had it and could still find it. He remembered liking it so I decided to read it as well.

The main character, Roger Damon, is a fairly successful literary agent living in New York in the late 70's or early '80's. One night, he gets a nebulous threatening phone call telling him he has been a bad boy and he will have to pay. The first three-fourths of the book is about Damon examining his life and people that might consider him an enemy. I couldn't put it down. The last part of the book seemed implausible compared to the first, almost like he couldn't find an appropriate ending. I felt a little unsatisfied with the ending but it didn't ruin the book for me. I felt Shaw really developed the characters, they didn't seem hollow at all. I think I want to read Rich Man Poor Man next.

A novel is no place for a shaggy dog story
By egwphd
303 pages that lead nowhere. The first 270 pages are not only written with some excellence, they lead the reader to be concerned about the story. The last 30 pages or so are little more than unintelligent garbage, hardly attached to the story at all. WORSE, the book ends with no conclusion leaving the reader, at least this one, angry enough to want to be the person who threatened the main character, except I want the author to suffer as he made me suffer writing a book without an ending. A novel is no place for a shaggy dog story.

"you've been a bad boy and you're going to have to pay
By John Amberg
Shaw's later work dealt quite a bit with what I guess I would call the randomness of death. The protagonist, Roger Damon, an aging literary agent, is woken up in the middle of the night by a stranger who identifies himself as "Zalovsky" who threatens, "you've been a bad boy and you're going to have to pay." The rest of the novel centers on Damon's attempts to figure out the identity of the caller and who or what in his past he must pay for. I always have enjoyed Irwin Shaw's works and this one, while not quite up to par with Rich Man Poor Man or Nightwork, is a bracing read.

Not Your Mother's Vampire: Vampires in Young Adult Fiction, by Deborah Wilson Overstreet

Examining young adult vampire fiction and how it fits in both the contemporary and classic vampire canon, the book's analysis begins with a primer on vampire scholarship, including a brief deconstruction of ten seminal vampire representations-five literary, five cinematic-and their impact on young adult vampire novels; the evolution of vampires from scary Gothic enemies into postmodern sexualized heroes is traced throughout the book; and the influence of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.

Subsequent chapters examine current young adult vampires novels from such popular horror authors as Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, Christopher Pike, R. L. Stine, Darren Shan, and L. J. Smith, and are divided into three categories based on narrative structure: the process of turning into a vampire, humans and vampires trying to find their way in life, and romantic relationships with a vampire partner. Analysis also addresses vampire conventions (the traditions that exist in each vampire universe), vampires and sexuality, and good and reluctant vampires. The human characters who coexist with vampires in these novels receive the same treatment. Additionally, issues of gender, age, and affectional orientation of human and vampire characters are discussed, as are postmodern constructions of good and evil.

Not Your Mother's Vampire contains an exploration of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a television phenomenon, which has sparked an entirely new academic field: Buffy Studies. The vampire characters on Buffy and parallel series, Angel, are explored as are a few main humans (slayers and witches alike). The final chapter of the book is an annotated bibliography of seminal vampire scholarship. As the only in-depth examination of young adult vampire novels in existence, this book is essential for students and scholars of the literature.

From School Library Journal
Overstreet evaluates 20 novels, giving plot summaries of each and comparing them to classical ideals of vampires. The television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" are also covered in their own chapters. The novels are studied in view of traditional vampire conventions, including the role of human characters and the sexualized experience of the vampire bite. The bibliography includes information on other scholarly studies of vampires and a table compares early literary and film vampire works. This volume has a narrow audience as it deals specifically with YA fiction. Also, more recent works such as Stephenie Meyer's Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005) and Ellen Schreiber's "Vampire Kisses" series (HarperCollins) are not included.—Corinda J. Review
A "closet vampire fan" traces the evolution of vampire stories, Anne Rice's influence, and the vampire as metaphor in ten classic texts from Polidori's "The Vampyre" (1819) to Coppola's 1992 film, Bram Stoker's Dracula. Pointing out the relevance of these archetypes to sexuality, rebellion, and other adolescent issues, Overstreet (elementary education, U. of Maine, Farmington), summarizes and analyzes a sample of the genre specifically for this audience (e.g., Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series). She includes annotated relevant scholarly studies and a comparison chart of elements of the classic versions. (Reference and Research Book News, May 2007)
