American Indian Sovereignty and the U.S. Supreme Court: The Masking of Justice, by David E. Wilkins

"Like the miner's canary, the Indian marks the shift from fresh air to poison gas in our political atmosphere; and our treatment of Indians, even more than our treatment of other minorities, reflects the rise and fall in our democratic faith," wrote Felix S. Cohen, an early expert in Indian legal affairs.

In this book, David Wilkins charts the "fall in our democratic faith" through fifteen landmark cases in which the Supreme Court significantly curtailed Indian rights. He offers compelling evidence that Supreme Court justices selectively used precedents and facts, both historical and contemporary, to arrive at decisions that have undermined tribal sovereignty, legitimated massive tribal land losses, sanctioned the diminishment of Indian religious rights, and curtailed other rights as well.

These case studies—and their implications for all minority groups—make important and troubling reading at a time when the Supreme Court is at the vortex of political and moral developments that are redefining the nature of American government, transforming the relationship between the legal and political branches, and altering the very meaning of federalism.

Review
"A detailed, thorough analysis of 15 US Supreme Court cases involving Native Americans. . . . The cases range from the well-known Johnson v. M’Intosh to the little-known Ward v. Racehorse, but all are instance in which the Court has mistakenly ‘limited or terminated the rights of indigenous peoples.’ In each case the author notes the errors the justices made and the ‘judicial masks’ that have often enabled them to ignore reality and morality. . . . Judicious and persuasive, he provides new information and insights in this important field. A must read for tribal officials, attorneys, judges, public officials, and others concerned with Native American affairs." (Choice 1998-04-01)

"This book offers a framework in which Supreme Court decisions can be analyzed and criticized. It is, on account of this framework, a wholly new kind of writing and one that is badly needed." (Vine Deloria Jr., author of American Indians, American Justice)

The facts themselves are a profound indictment of "law"
By Arthur Digbee
American Indian law represents an extraordinarily incoherent set of decisions and principles, with results that are not only bad public policy but indefensible in any terms that I know. To take only one example, the jurisdiction of a police force depends not only on whether a crime occurred on white-owned or tribally-owned land inside a reservation but on whether the criminal and the victim are Indians or not. All of this also varies by the nature of the crime. When you consider that some criminals, such as poachers, move from land parcel to land parcel without it being obvious where the actual crime occurs, and that the identity of the criminal is generally unknown at the start of an investigation, you have a recipe for non-Indians to get away with many crimes against Indians through legal maneuvering. The "sovereignty" of each Nation is similarly confused, especially with respect to the state in which each reservation finds itself.

Why is Indian law so confused? In this book, David Wilkins attributes it to a "legal consciousness" held by jurists and others. He divides this into three themes: constitution/treaty, civilizing/paternalistic, and nationalism/federalism.

To read these cases is to shake one's head and wonder, "What on earth were they thinking?" Much of Indian law rests on claims that have no foundation in law, starting with the notion that the tribes are "domestic-dependent nations." Racism, paternalism, ignorance, and a mind-boggling belief that Congress reigns supreme over people who have never acknowledged its supremacy run through these pages. Thus, we have treaties with tribes that take legal effect even if Congress doesn't ratify them, and that Congress can violate, reinterpret, or denounce but the tribes cannot. Native Alaskans were even subject to US law without treaties at all.

Though eventually incorporated into the political system, Indians were not given the same legal rights as others. They do not have redress against their governments. The Supreme Court refuses to protect their rights against the federal government. If you're not an Indian, this matters to you - - if the Court will not uphold the constitution or the law to protect Indians, why do you think it will protect you either?

Indian law is incoherent. It's indefensible. We need to start over. Read this book and learn why.

Buddhism and Postmodernity: Zen, Huayan, and the Possibility of Buddhist Postmodern Ethics, by Jin Y. Park

Buddhism and Postmodernity is a response to some of the questions that have emerged in the process of Buddhism's encounters with modernity and the West. Jin Y. Park broadly outlines these questions as follows: first, why are the interpretations and evaluations of Buddhism so different in Europe (in the nineteenth century), in the United States (in the twentieth century), and in traditional Asia; second, why does Zen Buddhism, which offers a radically egalitarian vision, maintain a strongly authoritarian leadership; and third, what ethical paradigm can be drawn from the Buddhist-postmodern form of philosophy? Park argues that, as unrelated as these questions may seem, the issues that have generated them are related to perennial philosophical themes of identity, institutional power, and ethics, respectively. Each of these themes constitutes one section of Buddhism and Postmodernity. Park discusses the three issues in the book through the exploration of the Buddhist concepts of self and others, language and thinking, and universality and particularities. Most of this discussion is drawn from the East Asian Buddhist traditions of Zen and Huayan Buddhism in connection with the Continental philosophies of postmodernism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction. Self-critical from both the Buddhist and Western philosophical perspectives, Buddhism and Postmodernity points the reader toward a new understanding of Buddhist philosophy and offers a Buddhist-postmodern ethical paradigm that challenges normative ethics of metaphysical traditions.

Review
Jin Y. Park's work is a major achievement of phenomenological hermeneutics. It is indeed of exceptional quality which is capacious and deep in scope, lucid and erudite in style, and poignant and engaging in argumentation. Park is at ease with surfing the ineffable and seemingly contradictory expressions of Zen Buddhism and with scaling the rugged terrains of postmodern thought. Park's most creative, incisive, and discerning moments are found in her very attempt to transversalize the borders of Eastern Buddhism and Western philosophy both modern and postmodern. To put it simply, it is intercultural and interdisciplinary. I find that her appropriation of postmodern philosophy in Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Derrida, and Lyotard is judicious and discriminating. Among the notable features of Park's work is a singularly prominent place of Korean Buddhism, the 'Zen hermeneutics' of language, silence and violence, and most importantly her ambitious and promising vision of creating a new paradigm of ethics at the crossroads of Buddhism and postmodern philosophy. (Hwa Yol Jung, Moravian College)

Buddhism and Postmodernity is a fascinating journey into the field of Buddhist philosophy. Jin Park skillfully negotiates a variety of discourses including Buddhist studies, feminism, and postmodernism. She masterfully unmasks prejudices about Buddhist traditions and their alleged lack of propensity for systematic thought, and presents a convincing case for a Zen ethics by demonstrating affinities between Zen and deconstruction. Her mastery of the material is impressive, her sketch of Zen philosophy visionary. For everyone with interest in Buddhism and/or postmodernism, Buddhism and Postmodernity is a must-read. (Gereon Kopf, Luther College)

...Admirably concise and yet complex... Professor Park carefully exemplifies her own conclusions regarding the centrifugal potentials of Buddhist thought and practice by offering us clearly presented prospects on a yet-to-come ethics of non-dual interdependence. The wide ambitions of Buddhism and Postmodernity are skillfully threaded together through recurring contrasts of centripetal/centrifugal and hermeneutical/existential dynamics at play both historically and philosophically, in the West and its encounters with Buddhism, and in the global transit from modernity to postmodernity . . . Buddhism and Postmodernity raises important questions, opening promising avenues for further conversation. (Sophia, November 2009)

The dialogue between Buddhism and postmodernity is one of the most exciting developments in contemporary philosophy, with important implications for ethics. Jin Y. Park's insightful study of their relationship is grounded in a deep understanding and appreciation of both traditions. Her book is a welcome addition to the growing literature. (David R. Loy, Xavier University)

They Don't Dance Much: A Novel, by James Ross

In this classic country noir, featuring a new introduction by Daniel Woodrell, a small town farmer takes a job at a roadhouse, where unbridled greed leads to a brutal murder
Jack McDonald is barely a farmer. Boll weevils have devoured his cotton crop, his chickens have stopped laying eggs, and everything he owns is mortgaged—even his cow. He has no money, no prospects, and nothing to do but hang around filling stations, wondering where his next drink will come from. As far as hooch goes, there’s no place like Smut Milligan’s, where Breath of Spring moonshine sells for a dollar a pint. A bootlegger with an entrepreneurial spirit, Milligan has plans to open a roadhouse, and he asks Jack to run the till. The music will be hot, the liquor cheap, and the clientele rough. But the only thing stronger than Milligan’s hooch is his greed, and Jack is slowly drawn into the middle of Smut’s dalliances with a married woman, the machinations of corrupt town officials—and a savage act of murder.

Starred Review. This newly reissued 1940 crime novel inevitably evokes James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice with its story of murder and adultery against the backdrop of a country roadhouse, but Ross's writing has an affectless, hard-boiled poetry all its own. In rural Corinth, N.C., farmer Jack McDonald has just had his land seized for back taxes when filling station owner Richard "Smut" Milligan offers him work in the soon-to-open River Bend Roadhouse. It will "take on all comers," from hardworking mill hands to corrupt politicos, and from his job's vantage point, Jack sees all of Corinth society coming to enjoy the dance floor, slot machines, and bootleg liquor. He also witnesses the slow-motion tragedy of Smut's increasing entanglement with the seductive Lola Fisher, wife of the richest man in town, and is himself drawn into the bloody results of his boss's greed. That Ross never published another novel may seem like a tragedy itself to any noir fan who reads this book, which emphasizes less the mechanics of plotting than the rich, profane flavor of its characters' voices. Daniel Woodrell provides an introduction. (Apr.)

Review
“A sleazy, corrupt but completely believable story of a North Carolina town.” —Raymond Chandler “A very fine book.” —Flannery O’Connor “[Ross] showed us that a writer can come out of the red-clay gulches of rural North Carolina during the Depression—that is, a writer can come out of absolutely anywhere at any time—and make high art without resorting to tricks, stylish ennui or pointless savagery.” —The Millions “Ross writes in classically laconic, wised-up American prose. His voice suits then and now and will still carry well tomorrow.” —Daniel Woodrell “As far as I’m concerned, this book is where dark Southern fiction began, and any writer who works in the field owes Ross a debt of gratitude, whether he or she has read They Don’t Dance Much or not.” —William Gay “In and out of print since it was first published in 1940, this blistering novel about a rural Carolina roadhouse with a dance floor is packed with enough desperate characters to make murder merely inevitable, but no less horrifying.” —Newsweek

About the Author
James Ross (1911–1990) was an author of noir fiction. Born in North Carolina, he worked as a reporter for the Daily News (Greensboro) for many years. He wrote his first and only novel, They Don’t Dance Much, in 1940. The book, considered “country noir,” was praised by the likes of Raymond Chandler and Flannery O’Connor. During the decade that followed, Ross published several short stories in literary journals such as Partisan Review, the Sewanee Review, Collier’s, and Argosy while he worked on another novel, In The Red, which was never published.

Excellent writing and superb atmosphere
By A Customer
"They Don't Dance Much" was rescued from obscurity by Southern Illinois University's Lost Fiction Series. Author James Ross' style is similar to James M. Cain; this book resonates like a film noir screenplay. Judging from the popularity of the recent film "L.A. Confidential" someone in Hollywood should take notice. But "They Don't Dance Much" is more than a cheap thrill. It's true literature. Those fans of excellent writing out there need to take a look at this book. They won't be disappointed.

A great and obscure piece of pulp fiction.
By A Customer
Raymond Chandler mentioned this novel (along with THIEVES LIKE US) in a letter in his collected letters, so I grabbed a copy, and I can only say that Chandler knew one when he saw one. This completely amoral tale of roadhouse denizens in the depression era South is wonderfully atmospheric and gets under your skin in an unforgettalbe way. Deadpan violence, stark atmoshpere, and characters worthy of a pulp Faulkner. Don't miss it if rural American noir is your genre.

A superb novel, sadly forgotten
By Daniel Gunter
I first read this book almost 20 years ago and recently purchased a second copy of it. It is superb. The language is pitch-perfect throughout, and the story coils itself inexorably around the reader. For years I had told people that, if they really wanted to read a hard-as-nails novel, they should find "They Don't Dance Much." My rereading confirms my earlier opinion. The novel has scenes of extraordinary violence told in a spare, unadorned prose that makes the action all the more graphic.

The comparison to James M. Cain is probably fair enough--but I think that Ross is even better than Cain. Ross makes his characters' slide into night seem more gradual and more shocking for its gradualness. And Ross's universe is less moralistic than Cain's: in Ross's novels, evildoers are not necessarily punished.

Really, this novel should be republished by Penguin Classics or the New York Review of Books. It deserves recognition as one of the best novels of twentieth-century American literature.

New preface by Jerry Hill, the author's nephew.

Review
When this book first appeared in 1954, Howard Hill, the fabled archer, was at the top of his game. This collection of stories documents Hill's versatility with the bow and his eye for rousing showmanship: mountain lions in Arizona; blue marlin (yes, with a bow) off Baja; lions, pythons, crocs-a veritable Noah's Ark, in fact- in Africa. Hill was an adept storyteller and a swashbuckling personality, bigger than life. Wild Adventureis a tribute to his skill and to his style. (Lionel Atwill Field & Stream)

If you're in to outdorr adventure, this book is cool. (Star-Gazette)

OK, it's not high tech, but if you're into outdoor adventure, this book is cool. First published in 1954. "Wild Adventure" was written by Howard Hill, the protypical "extreme" guy. (Star-Gazette)

About the Author
Howard Hill devoted his life to the promotion of archery until his death in 1975. He is considered by many to be the greatest archer/hunter of all time. His bow work is featured in several movies, including Robin Hood, Dodge City, and They Died With Their Boots On. The list of awards he won is impressive, including 196 Field Archery tournaments in a row. He took well over 2,000 animals with his bow and arrow. He was the first white man to kill an elephant with a bow and arrow, and the only man to do it without the use of a poisoned arrow.

I'm a big fan of the late Howard Hill and his archery bowhunting exploits, but this book was more about his adventures with wildlife photography.

Incredible stories from an archery legend.
By LC in Seattle
This book did not turn out to be what I had expected. It is filled with stories from Howard Hill's life but not specifically about hunting and archery. Most of the book covers Howard's exploits as he attempts to photograph and film wild animals across North America in the 20's and 30's. While reading the book I came to realize that in the days before "extreme sports" there were people who would pursue activities that most rational people would dismiss as very dangerous if not suicidal. This book is full of these stories and an entertaining read.

Great adventures and writing by Howard Hill
By U.B. Ware
This was a great find and some wonderful history of the travels of Howard Hill. Loved adventures like this and the way it was written by the Mr. Hill.
Nice collection for my small library regarding archery. A great find and fun to go back during those days. Special chapter, I found interesting, even though it's outdated now is the pages dedicated to the photography equipment Mr. Hill used. Many chapters here I stepped back in time and enjoyed. Howard Hill is a legend and a special bowman who made a positive statement with his skills long before the compound bow of today. This should be a must read for anyone interested in archery.

Rushed this book out
By Honey-do-list Master
I have been an ongong fan of Don Pendleton series for years.
With a monthly release per book on this, some can get sloppy.
Typos, even a dropped section of the story that didn't connect, probably to meet their standard page maximum.
Not up to their par on this release.
Story was good as normal, but other stuff slipped.

The Complete Short Stories of Marcel ProustFrom Cooper Square Press

One of the great literary figures of the modern age, French novelist Marcel Proust (1871-1922) probes the precarious mental and erotic nuances of love, the frail mysteries of time passing and time past in highly original, surprising tales. Includes a new translation of the complete text of Pleasures and Days, Proust's only short-story collection, and six tales previously uncollected and never before available in English.

From Booklist
Proust is developing into one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. This new collection contains his first literary endeavor, "Pleasures and Days," translated into English for the first time in 50 years, along with six additional stories, never before seen in English. Critiquing Proust's early stories is like appraising Picasso's four-year-old napkin drawings. There are subtle hints of brilliance, but these callow stories pale in comparison to his enigmatic opus, Remembrance of Things Past. Both works share the glitzy backdrop of Parisian high society and tiptoe through the same topics: addressing vanity, investigating the validity of sexual mores, and pondering the impact of sickness on life. Separated by 17 years, these juvenile tales set the thematic and stylistic table for the unique feast of Proust's mature work. Delicately translated by Neugroschel, the prolific three-time PEN Award winner, these early musings are priceless, insightful venturing into the mind of a maturing virtuoso. This book is a must for inclusive fiction collections. Jeff Snowbarger

Spoils of War: Women of Color, Cultures, and Revolutions, by Renée T. White

Women of color remain arguably the most economically, politically, and socially marginalized group in the United States and the Third World. In Spoils of War, a diverse group of distinguished contributors suggest that acts of aggression resulting from the racism and sexism inherent in social institutions can be viewed as a sort of 'war,' experienced daily by women of color.

Honest encouragement and solid direction
By Tanya Dennis
I had the priviledge to meet Jim Watkins at the Blue Ridge Christian Writers Conference, May 2007. He is a wonderful speaker, filled with humility, wisdom and humor. This book proves no less.

Aimed at writers and speakers, this book is a necessary read for anyone who is serious about teaching. It's a great tool for those in ministry, revealing in an organized fashion how to be effective with words. The text is divided into three main sections: changing lives through intelligence, intensity and integrity. The author weaves Scripture and vivid illustrations throughout. He provides many clear examples of how to apply the principles of this book. Furthermore, it's an easy read. His tone is light and conversational without mincing the important details.

Final Thoughts: An easy read and great resource. Definitely RECOMMENDED.

Everything You Need to Know to Be an Effective Communicator
By Auntie Em
James Watkins is a speaker, teacher, writer, humorist, editor, pastor. And he's done a whole list of other things, too. This book covers the essentials of communication, spoken or written. I'm a writer, and I've read it twice already. The book is well organized and covers the subject thoroughly. And the best part---it's laced with Watkin's special brand of gentle humor. It's one of those books that will always be in my library because the wisdom contained in it is ageless.

Rethinking Cold War Culture, by Peter J. Kuznick, James Gilbert

This anthology of essays questions many widespread assumptions about the culture of postwar America. Illuminating the origins and development of the many threads that constituted American culture during the Cold War, the contributors challenge the existence of a monolithic culture during the 1950s and thereafter. They demonstrate instead that there was more to American society than conformity, political conservatism, consumerism, and middle-class values.

By examining popular culture, politics, economics, gender relations, and civil rights, the contributors contend that, while there was little fundamentally new about American culture in the Cold War era, the Cold War shaped and distorted virtually every aspect of American life. Interacting with long-term historical trends related to demographics, technological change, and economic cycles, four new elements dramatically influenced American politics and culture: the threat of nuclear annihilation, the use of surrogate and covert warfare, the intensification of anticommunist ideology, and the rise of a powerful military-industrial complex.

This provocative dialogue by leading historians promises to reshape readers' understanding of America during the Cold War, revealing a complex interplay of historical norms and political influences.

I found the writing easy to read and the information informative
By K. Marie Frances
I read this book for a Cold War Literature class in my graduate program. I found the writing easy to read and the information informative. Like many historical surveys, this text includes various essays from different authors, which gives each chapter its own distinct flavor. Overall, as a young person who was born the same year that the wall came down, reading this book helped me understand some of the cultural shifts and influences in the Cold War and sparked great conversation between me and the older generations of my family. I definitely recommend this text for history buffs, students, and anyone interested in learning more about this tumultuous time in our history.

Countrymen, by Bo Lidegaard

Amid the dark, ghastly history of World War II, the literally extraordinary story, never before fully researched by a historian, of how the Danish people banded together to save their fellow Jews from the Nazis—told through the remarkable unpublished diaries and documents of families forced to run for safety, leaving their homes and possessions behind, and of those who courageously came to their aid.

In 1943, with its king and administration weakened but intact during the Nazi occupation, Denmark did something that no other country in Western Europe even attempted. Anticipating that the German occupying powers would soon issue the long-feared order to round up the entire population of Jews for deportation to concentration camps, the Danish people stood up in defiance and resisted. The king, politicians, and ordinary civilians were united in their response—these threatened people were not simply Jews but fellow Danes who happened to be Jewish, and no one would help in rounding them up for confinement and deportation.

While diplomats used their limited but very real power to maneuver and impede matters in both Copenhagen and Berlin, the warning that the crisis was at hand quickly spread through the Jewish community. Over fourteen harrowing days, as they were helped, hidden, and protected by ordinary people who spontaneously rushed to save their fellow citizens, an incredible 7,742 out of 8,200 Jewish refugees were smuggled out all along the coast—on ships, schooners, fishing boats, anything that floated—to Sweden.

While the bare facts of this exodus have been known for decades, astonishingly no full history of it has been written. Unfolding on a day-to-day basis, Countrymen brings together accounts written by individuals and officials as events happened, offering a comprehensive overview that underlines occupied Denmark’s historical importance to Hitler as a prop for the model Nazi state and revealing the savage conflict among top Nazi brass for control of the country. This is a story of ordinary glory, of simple courage and moral fortitude that shines out in the midst of the terrible history of the twentieth century and demonstrates how it was possible for a small and fragile democracy to stand against the Third Reich.

From Booklist
One of the few feel-good stories to emerge from the Holocaust was the protection and eventual rescue of the approximately 7,000 Danish Jews by their fellow Gentile Danish citizens, escaping a scheduled roundup by Nazi occupiers. Lidegaard is a former diplomat and is currently the editor of the Danish newspaper Politiken. As he points out, this mass rescue was extraordinary, since the population and governments of other occupied nations rarely protected their fellow Jewish countrymen. Lidegaard uses diaries, letters, and memoirs of the participants to provide a day-to-day narrative that proceeds on two tracks: the Nazi plans for roundup and the Danish plans to defeat it. The Danish government, including the king, had advance notice of the Nazi plan. A policy of delay and obstruction bought time, which allowed ordinary citizens to organize transport of almost all of the Jews to Sweden. This is a tense, inspiring story of the resistance to oppression by a united people. --Jay Freeman

From Bookforum
Lidegaard has painstakingly reconstructed an extraordinary story, and he tells with the assurance of a journalist who knows he’s making literature. It’s a shame that the epic story of Countrymen had to wait so long to be told in full-length book form. —Allen Barra

Review
“Countrymen is extraordinary. I will not soon forget this epic of decency, this saga of humanism saving lives. The idea of humanism has been under attack for so long now, as false and sentimental and impotent, as insufficiently radical to make a difference, that it is stirring to be given a grand example of the opposite case—of a clear, muscular, brave, and effective humanism, and in the whole of a society. Bo Lidegaard's moving and meticulous book is itself an expression of the idealism that it documents.”

In-depth historical treatise on a special moment during WW II.
By Esther Schindler
Many years ago I was told how, during the German occupation of Denmark, the king refused to comply with the Germans' demands to make Jews wear the star-of-David. And he did so, the story goes, by wearing a Jewish star himself, and the whole country wearing stars in support of the Jewish population.

As it turns out, that isn't exactly what happened. But the actual history is almost as impressive, because Denmark DID save its Jews from the Nazis in World War II. And Bo Lidegaard tells us every detail of that history.

This is another book in which I'd like you to ignore my star rating, because its value is based more on your expectations than mine. I confess that my interest in the subject was superficial, at least in comparison to the information supplied. It's like asking someone, "How was your day at work?" and getting a two-hour answer when a few paragraphs would satiate your curiosity about the topic. However, I certainly cannot fault the author for doing a conscientious detailed job!

Still, I learned quite a bit about Denmark's role during World War II, and how hard the community and the government (or what was left of it) tried to keep themselves a separate and independent entity. For example, the populace was encouraged to comply with the Germans but to give them a cold shoulder socially. And the key in supporting the Jews was not a matter of appreciating the religion (there were only 7,000 Jews in the country to begin with) but the perception of Denmark's independence and, kind of, "You ain't the boss of me."

The what-happened-when history -- including quite a bit of information about the politicians who behaved mostly-honorably -- is interspersed with excerpts from diaries kept by Jews during the time they had to hightail it out of Denmark and into Sweden. That lends a personal fillip to all the reference material.

The end result is that the author recorded a moment of valor and grace in a time when such qualities were so often absent. "The crucial point is that the refugees could count on their countrymen and engage friends, colleagues, and neighbors, as a matter of course, in their efforts to find a way out," writes Lidegaard. "Not even necessarily those who were known to be involved in the armed resistance... Rather, a wide circle of ordinary citizens took their first step into defiance by helping fellow citizens. They did so because they perceived the impending action as an attempt to break the spine of the society they felt part of."

If you are expecting a Bill Bryson-esque overview of Fun Facts About The Nazis, this is bound to be disappointing, because Lidegaard goes into a lot of historical depth with plenty of sources and relevant tangents. And I think you have to be REALLY interested in getting the entire story to find the book a page-turner. But if you do want all the facts at your fingertips, Countrymen is an excellent reference that'll suit the need.

Important but ponderous (3.5 stars)
By J. Green
In the history of Nazi Germany's persecution of the Jews there aren't many happy stories. Usually the best we can manage is a family hidden in the attic or an individual who slipped away. But the case of Denmark, where 7,000 Danes were Jewish, stands out even if it doesn't start very promisingly.

When Germany attacked in April 1940, Denmark's leaders didn't believe the country was strong enough to resist. Instead of putting up a fight, Denmark became an occupied country that still retained some semblance of self-government - a situation most Danes found humiliating. And given Germany's record of persecution against Jews, Danish leaders did everything they thought possible to avert a roundup of their citizens. Yet when it finally came on October 1, 1943, the people themselves managed to help nearly all the Jews to escape to Sweden. Out of 7,000, only a few hundred were captured by the Germans.

Given that I am one quarter Danish (my grandmother and her parents emigrated around 1900) I really looked forward to this history. And it's an inspiring story of how the Danish people helped their "countrymen" escape what everyone knew was a death-sentence. The risks people took were very real and dangerous, and neighbors even cared for the property of the refugees (instead of the opportunistic looting that generally happened in other places). The book focuses mostly on the Hannover and Marcus families - two sisters - as well as their father, but other sources and stories are included as well. I found it especially interesting how people knew what the Germans were doing to the Jews (not always in vague or general terms!) and yet they still found it hard to believe it would happen in Denmark, instead trusting in the "honor" of the occupation forces. And yet, if it hadn't been for some information leaks, the number who escaped might have been small.

Unfortunately, it's also a very ponderous book that can easily overwhelm an otherwise eager reader at a snail's pace. Frequently accounts of the same event are quoted at length from multiple sources, giving a more complete view of the events but also dragging on for pages with little gained. As such, it may be a scholarly work, but made it hard for me to engage as an ordinary reader. I found the book interesting *while I was reading it,* but it was difficult to find much enthusiasm to pick it up again *in between* readings. Nonetheless, this is an important story, and one I am glad to know but I can't in good conscience give it more than 3 stars ("just okay"). (Oh, and that story about King Christian and the people all wearing Jewish stars in a show of solidarity? It's just a story.)

An compelinging, heart-wrenching account of a nation's heroism
By William Courson
Denmark had been under German occupation since 1940, but as late as 1943 - through a combination of unimaginable courage, crafty diplomacy and naked dissimulation - the government of that kingdom managed to remain more or less intact, in control of its population, territory and organs of administration, including its police and armed forces.

Denmark had managed to maintain its neutrality under a seeming and widely criticized patina of appeasement: while allowing the Germans into the country, it firmly resisted Nazi representation in its councils of government. But by 1943, the German occupiers had reached the limits of their tether, their patience at an end: Denmark was theirs, and its Jewish population was to be deported and exterminated in the man-made hells that spotted the eastern half of the European continent.

Knowing this to be the case, the aging King Christian X and his stalwart prime minister, Thorvad Stauning, collaborated with the country's citizenry to save their 7,000 fellow Danes who happened to be Jewish from certain death at the hands of their Nazi occupiers Over fourteen days - from Sunday, September 26th to Saturday October 9th, the great mass of the Danish people "spontaneously" came together to help, hide and protect their Jewish friends and neighbors - neighbors who were suddenly refugees - and smuggle nearly the whole of Denmark's Jewish community out of the country in trains, planes, automobiles and boats and into safety in neighboring Sweden.

Shockingly, until the publication of Bo Lidegaard's "Countrymen" there has been no definite history written of this amazing episode, a singular bright spot in the horrors of World War II Europe.

This book is compelling, truly a page turner: an incredibly engaging epic of the decency of ordinary human beings saving the lives of their fellows at often great risk to themselves. "Countrymen" is well-written and thoughtfully organized, filled with detailed information and chronicling the experiences of the Germans, the Danes themselves, their government and king, and the Jewish Danes and those non-Jewish Danes married to them. A wonderful, uplifting story that gives one hope for the human species.
