The A to Z of Shamanism (The A to Z Guide Series), by Graham Harvey, Robert J. Wallis

Few religious traditions have generated such diversity and stirred imaginations as shamanism. In their engagements with other worlds, shamans have conversed with animals and ancestors and have been empowered with the knowledge to heal patients, advise hunters, and curse enemies. Still other shamans, aided by rhythmic music or powerful plant helpers, undertake journeys into different realities where their actions negotiate harmony between human and other than human communities. Once relegated to paintings on cave walls, today Shamanism can be seen in performances at rave clubs and psychotherapeutic clinics.

The A to Z of Shamanism has the duel task of exploring the common ground of shamanic traditions and evaluating the diversity of both traditional indigenous communities and individual Western seekers. This is done in an introduction, a bibliography, a chronology, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries, which explore the consistent features of a variety of shamans, the purposes shamanism serves, the function and activities of the shaman, and the cultural contexts in which they make sense.

Psychoanalysis and Theism: Critical Reflections on the GrYnbaum Thesis, by Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi

How should we approach the psychological study of religion, and how relevant is classical psychoanalysis, identified with the writings of Sigmund Freud, to the understanding of religion? Freud's writings on religion have been discussed often and continue to attract attention and debate. Psychoanalysis and Theism starts with an essay by Adolf Grünbaum, one of the world's leading philosophers of science and an incisive critic of Freud's work. Grünbaum looks at Freud's general claims about the psychological mechanisms involved in religion and finds them lacking. Then, in a surprising turn, Grünbaum judges some of Freud's interpretations of concrete religious ideas and practices to be not only cogent, but indispensable. When it comes to the case of the belief in Virgin Birth, Grünbaum finds an Oedipal interpretation to be our only choice.

This remarkable essay is the stimulus for a symposium with nine senior scholars, coming from the fields of philosophy, psychology, sociology, and psychoanalysis, who present their critical reflections on how we should study religion, how we should treat Freud's ideas, and what the future directions in psychological research on concrete religious behavior should be. The contributors bring to this effort their varied fields of expertise, from analytical philosophy to experimental psychology. Of special interest are essays which deal with the Virgin Birth doctrine and its possible psychological sources and with the potential for future psychoanalytic studies of faith and ritual. Other essays focus on Freud's conscious and unconscious motivations for studying religion as well as the hidden biases and lacunae found in the social science literature on religious practices.

This volume adds a unique combination of critical and knowledgeable voices to the debate on Sigmund Freud's legacy.

Review
Adolf Grünbaum is an excellent philosopher of science. It is very good to have his critical assessment of the evidence for Freud's theory of religion reprinted here along with comments by scholars in several different fields. The authors examine Freud's and Grünbaum's arguments using resources drawn from philosophy, sociology, contemporary psychoanalysis, empirical psychology of religion, and the history of religions. The articles are all interesting, and they explore a range of topics including Freud's Jewish identity, Grünbaum's psychoanalytic account of virgin birth narratives, and contemporary serpent handlers. The volume contributes to current discussions of the relation of psychoanalysis and religion. (Wayne Proudfoot Ph.D, Columbia University)

Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi's Psychoanalysis and Theism is a timely treasure. Seven essays responding to Adolf Grünbaum's “Psychoanalysis and Theism,” with which the book begins, revive Freud's penetrating speculations about the meaning and psycho-dynamics of religion and carry them further. The authors explore the Oedipal angle of religion, the susceptibility of Catholicism to Freudian inquiry, the relationship of Jewish universalism to Freud's topic, the nature of the questions of illusion and delusion that Freud raised in regard to religious belief and behavior, and still more. Divided into two parts―Methods and Motives, and Interpretation and Meaning―the book offers the reader a brilliant set of essays that plumb and apply Freud's take on religion both appreciatively and critically. (Gordon Fellman, PhD, Brandeis University)

This volume has been overdue. Asking what psychology has to say about religion, it does not loose itself in providing a host of facts and details. Rather, it dares to turn to the grand and incomparably influential theory psychoanalysis continues to be. Some of the best scholars worldwide engage in a multidisciplinary and critical discussion with eminent thinkers ranging from Freud to Grünbaum, resulting in a must read for anyone interested in the psychological study of religion. (Jacob A. Belzen, PhD, University of Amsterdam)

The Turk in America: The Creation of an Enduring Prejudice (Utah Series in Turkish and Islamic Stud), by Justin McCarthy

In The Turk in America, historian Justin McCarthy seeks to explain the historical basis for American prejudice towards Turks in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  The volume focuses on fraudulent characterizations of Turks, mostly stemming from an antipathy in Europe and America toward non-Christians, and especially Muslims.  Spanning one hundred and fifty years, this history explores the misinformation largely responsible for the negative stereotypes of Turks during this period.

Review

"This is a fascinating book! It is thoroughly researched and the footnotes reflect a comprehensive treatment of the subject. The Turk in America corrects a markedly one-sided historiography and breaks new ground in its exposition of how the Ottoman Turks came to be vilified in the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries."—Edward J. Erickson, Command and Staff College, Marine Corps University

"The author is to be congratulated for his meticulous and detailed research. He has done a first class job of writing a history of ethno-religious propaganda as it was directed against 'the Turks' from the nineteenth century onwards, with special focus on the contribution of missionaries to anti-Ottoman propaganda in the nineteenth century, the dissemination of British propaganda in the United States during the First World War, and 'Politics and the Missionary Establishment,' as the author entitles one of his chapters. The research is comprehensive, the sources detailed, and the writing strong and direct."—Jeremy Salt, Bilket University, Ankara, Turkey

A SUPERB BOOK BY AN IMPARTIAL U.S. HISTORY PROFESSOR DOCUMENTING HOW THE WESTERN(U.S)MEDIA FABRICATED LIES ON SO-CALLED GENOCIDE
By Mehmet Sahinoglu
A powerful documentary book showcasing to the world in detail about the reality-documented perspective of Turks and Kurds being falsely accused of atrocities and Armenians' cleansing during the declining periods of the 600-year old Ottoman empire in U.S. media and by missionaries following a planned successful campaign of how the real historical facts were brutally twisted. Especially Justin McCarthy’s The Turk in America (pp.105–157) disproves horrible claims based on rumored falsehoods by perpetrators.. See pp. 105-157. This is a well-written Turkish-lives-matter based self-defense addressing both the laymen and the intellectual world including the politicized Mr. Pope, the revengeful, in Vatican who are blaming Turkey for the falsehood-laden genocide tall-tales when those poor folks only had out-of self-defense to protect their livelihood to stay sane and alive during those horrible and disastrous wars. This is by far the most eye-opening book along with "Death and Exile", Justin McCarthy's other facts-based-historical manuscript that I would genuinely and highly recommend to those readers eager to learn the truth, freed of prejudice. These two books, Death and Exile, and The Turk in America are MUST read by all Turks (and especially history-lovers elsewhere before they jump the gun and make accusations about other nations) and Americans alike to learn about their history rather than au verbatim imitating incorrect and baseless, merciless U.S. media propaganda deliberately set fire by missionaries and cash-paid complicit fabricators of late 1800s and early1900s. What a superb accomplishment this book is! Kudos to Professor Justin McCarthy for his courageous, fearless and scientific approach.
PS: Professor Halil INALCIK, who taught at Chicago Univ. until 1993 and dubbed the North-Star of historians as the greatest Osmanist of the world as well as being recognized as the doyen of Ottoman historians and a well-respected guru by an entirety of the contemporary U.S. Ottoman historians who studied the Ottoman/Turkish history (in Univ. of Chicago and Princeton etc. in USA), would have expressed the same sentiments had INALCIK not unfortunately died yesterday at the age of 100, born in 1916 in Istanbul to Turkic-Crimean parentage a century ago. May he rest in peace!

Turks need to Fight the Prejudices revealed in The Turk in America
By Yuksel Oktay
The Turk in America, The Creation of an Enduring Prejudice
By Justin McCarthy

The book, published in 2010 by the University of Utah, was introduced during the March 14-16 Turkish American Leadership Conference in Washington DC. I had gone through its 500 pages but not read it since some of the subjects in the book are already covered in many books, especially in the two volume "The Genocide of Truth" by Sukru S Aya, ", and in close to one hundred books and articles by Prof.Dr. Turkkaya Ataov, the Turkish International Relations teacher known around the world for his research on the Armenian and other issues. However, none of Ataov's or Sukru Aya's books are listed in the 28 page Bibliography which includes over 500 books by both Turkish and foreign writers. Another important book related mainly to the Missionary activities in Turkey, "Turkiye'deki Amerika - America in Turkey" by Dr. Uygur Kocabasoglu (TAC graduate) is not included in the Bibliography either, although this is the main topic of discussion in the book. Frank A. Stone's, "Academies for Anatolia" is in the list.

To be sure, and much to Prof. McCharty'se credit, there are many very interesting revelations in the book, explained in an excellent manner and in great detail. The first chapter, "The Missionaries Depart", opens with the comments by Pliny Fisk, the first American missionary to the Middle East, presented during his farewell sermon as he left Boston to Turkey:

Judea is inhabited by several interesting classes of men. The principal of these are Mohammedans (1), and Jews; and Roman Catholic, Greek, Armenian and Syrian Christians. The Mohammedeans, who are masters of the country, who posses most of its wealth, and who have the exclusive management of political concerns, are, as you well know, the followers of that artful imposter, who arose in Arabia, about the commencement of the seventh century..."

The second chapter, Turks and Muslims in Early America, begins with the statement: The image of Turks began with a historical disadvantage in early America. The new American Republic, despite the secularism of its Constitution, was a resolutely Christian state. Little was known of Islam, except as a supposed enemy of Christianity..."

Chapter 3 chronicles the Greek rebellion, Chapter 6 tells all about the Bulgarian Horrors and Chapter 7 is about the Americans and the Armenians. This is where the truth about the Armenian issue is spelled out in many ways. Armenian falsifications and American way of informing the public who probably did not know where Armenia or Turkey were, especially the often false and imaginary reporting by the New York Times and the Associated Press, are presented in detail ..
Chapter 9 is on the creation of the Near East Relief as a continuation of "the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian relief (ACASR) founded in November 1915, and which still exists today, headed by an Armenian-American, in an office downtown Manhattan. The activities of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) is told in detail, including that of James L. Barton, the missionary leader of the Boston based and still active organization.

The final chapter, "The Last Act for the Missionary Establishment", begins with a statement that "The Missionaries' political hopes for the Armenians were thwarted forever by the victories of the Turkish Nationalists in Anatolia and the Bolsheviks in the Caucasus" And yet, there is no mention of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's statement on the Armenian issue, who also had a lot to say about the Missionaries. The final section, "A sea Change", states that "With the campaign for the Lausanne Treaty the missionaries had turned form enemies of all things Turkish to supporters of Turkey."

The Epilogue covers the continuation Myth of the Terrible Turk. This is probably why only a dozen Americans and twice that number Turkish-Americans attended a presentation on Ataturk and Turkey at the Hunterdon County Library in Clinton, NJ on May 21, 2011. Most of the questions asked were on Today's Turkey, which seems to parting from Ataturk's principles. They all stated the same thing, "They knew nothing about Ataturk or the Turks" and one lady stated that her friends tried to dissuade her when she told them that she was going to Turkey. Se also suggested that presentations such as the one at the Hunterdon County Library should be made across America in order to tell the truth about the real Turk and the beautiful country of Turkey.

I received the book as a present from Sevgin Oktay, the moderator of the Concerned People to Set The Record Straight (cptstrs) group which published a small booklet early this year with 9 subjects on the "Armenian falsifications". Most of the topics in the booklet are also covered in Prof. McCharty's book. This is what Sevgin Oktay added as a comment on the last blank page:

End Note: I call this the Justin - Wikileaks" on what has transpired behind the scenes against the Turks for so long. It is an eye-opener and calls for united effort to expose it like this book does so admirably, and then let the sunshine disinfect-.

The above suggestion could be followed by all the Turkish-American Associations and partial reading of the book with a critical evaluation of its contents and omissions can be made. Anyone interested in participating in this event could contact their associations and design an action plan how to fight the anti-Turkish efforts presented in this book, which are often overlooked. Those who have read the book are encouraged to share their comments, in writing if possible, with those involved with this type of activities. Brief review of other books on Turkey and the Middle East, which either ignore Turkey completely or presents distorted facts, distributed earlier, can also be made available. This is a must read book for those who are working on the reconciliation between the Armenians and Turks, including all the leaders of the NGOs and many government authorities.

Best regards.

Yuksel Oktay, PE

Notes. (1) Referring to Muslims as Mohammedan is not proper, a mistake made by some foreigners.
(2). The fact that the US Senate has not ratified the Lausanne Treaty is also covered in detail.

Valuable for anyone!
By muharrem sev
This book is essential reading for anyone who is interested in knowing more about why there are sad (or bad) stories about the Turks and the Armenians; or the Turks and the Greeks; or how missionary organizations just before the First World War built bias and prejudice in North America towards Ottoman Turks and Muslims in the Middle East. Sections on British and American collaboration in sharing "creative" news, especially the numbers, are particularly thought provoking. It is also amazing or surprising that there was tremendous lack of critical analysis at the editorial desks of the newspapers published during that period in the USA.

If you had inherited any stories from your parents or grand-parents or read something in school books or listened to a sermon at church on these subjects or have any Turkish-Armenian-Greek friends and heard their stories, you will benefit immensely from this book. It may shake your beliefs, though!

Short but sweet. Fab chemistry between main characters! Look forward to more!
By Miranda Owen
This was the first book I've ever read by this author. It's only about 78 pages but I loved it. The two main characters are Kerilyn and Arawn. Kerilyn is from a long line of demon hunters. Most of her family members are dead from fighting demons. She lives alone and one of the few visitors she has is Arawn. Arawn is Lord of the Spirits and his realm is the Netherworld. Every Halloween since she was 16, Arawn has come to visit her. Halloween being the one night spirits and demons can leave the Netherworld. Due to her line of work, and things she's heard from her family, she is naturally wary of Arawn and his motives for visiting her. However, at the same time, she also finds herself strangely attracted. No matter how much she questions his motivation, she can't help herself from meeting on the other side of her fence each Halloween and indulging in their verbal dance. Though this story was short, I felt like the author did a great job of pulling you in and making the chemistry between Kerilyn & Arawn interesting to read about. The sexual tension was the good kind, rather than the frustrating kind. I totally fell for the character of Arawn. He was a delicious mix of sexy, slightly dangerous, and yet sweet. I loved how they managed to work together and how, like Arawn said, this romance was largely about trust issues. I would love to read more stories from this author in general, and I would specifically love it if she decides to write more stories involving these two characters. This was just the kind of story I was looking for today - very satisfying to read.

Review: Seducing the Demon Huntress
By Manga Maniac Cafe
Review:

I have enjoyed many Carina Press novellas, and Seducing the Demon Huntress is no exception. There are times when I want a faster read, and I turn to this publisher for a quick fix. I like the variety of stories they publish, so I can always find something to pique my interest. I was in the mood for a PNR, and after interviewing the author, I wanted to give Seducing the Demon Huntress a read. I liked this novella, and would read more by Victoria Davies in the future.

Kerilyn is a demon hunter. She comes from a long line of demon hunters, much to her sorrow. Her entire family has been picked off, one by one, and now she's alone. As darkness falls on All Hallow's Eve, she retreats into her house, fearful that she'll be facing this frightening night by herself. The demons and spirits of the Netherworld are out to get her, and this is the night when Abaddon and Arawn, the rulers of the Netherworld, can freely pass into this realm. For years, Arawn has waited outside her gate for her to let him in, and for years she has harbored a terrible secret. She's infatuated with Arawn, and she can't help but steal a few moments with him every year. She resists his requests to open the gate and invite him in, but she doesn't know how much longer she can. When disaster strikes, and her niece is kidnapped by Abaddon, she has to leave the sanctuary of her wards to rescue Sarah. Leaving her yard will spell her doom, but Kerilyn has to try to save her only living relative.

I liked this story a lot. I found the forbidden relationship between Arawn and Kerilyn compelling. Kerilyn has been drawn to Arawn for years, but exploring a relationship with him will quickly lead to a painful death. Her family has been killing his subjects for years, and it's impossible to think that he, or his subjects, could ever put that aside. Yet when she is forced to leave the sanctuary of her home, he is quick to accompany her. He knows her lame disguise won't fool anyone, and he's afraid that facing his brother by herself will sign her death sentence. I loved how quickly Arawn was willing to follow and defend her, and that he was willing to confront his brother to keep Kerilyn and her niece safe. I was totally convinced that he was willing to kill his brother, or die trying, to protect her. I also understood her reluctance to trust him. How could she know for certain that he wasn't part of a ply to get her to Abaddon, so they could kill her together.

In addition to being a hot love story, the battle with Abaddon is an exciting, no-holds-barred fight. If you're in the mood for a read with a kick-ass heroine, you don't have to look further than Seducing the Demon Huntress.

Excellent! Gets to the important ideas and concepts not just a recipe book on "how to."
By kathleen cullen
I have bought other books recently on couples therapy and this one stood out as being thoughtful and viewing the subject from a depth rather than a surface "quick fix." I would strongly recommend this book.

A professional book
By Psychologist
This classic book is a comprehensive work, using the Object-Relations terminology of Fairbern and Klein, and applying it to the couple therapy field. The authors combine a deep psychoanalytic understanding together with a brave habdling of sexual issues. The bokk includes guidlines for diagnostics, interesting case material for the couple therapist. I recommend the book for begginers in the field, students and practitioners.

CAUTIONARY VERSES, by Hilaire Belloc

This volume contains all of the old favorites over which Hilaire Belloc’s admirers have been chuckling since the end of the 19th century—and the original illustrations by B.T.B. and Nicolas Bentley. It also contains many later verses in the same sly vein.

Here you meet again the Horrible Examples (old favorites if you are very fortunate): Matilda, who told lies and was Burned to Death; Sarah Byng, who could not read and was tossed into a Thorny Hedge by a Bull; Lord Henry Chase, who got into a Libel Case; and the curiously instructive beasts who range from microbes to frozen mammoths, all of them inhabiting Mr. Belloc’s private zoological park.

The republicationof these verses in one handsome volume is cause for rejoicing, especially among wise children, who will judge this edition of Cautionary Verses to be the ideal book for the education and edification of their parents.

Simply wonderful comic verse
By Charles M. Strauss
Unlike most of the appreciators of Hilaire Belloc's comic verse for children, I first came to these wonderfully droll verses as an adult (I was brought up on Samuel Hoffenstein and Ogden Nash), but I have grown to love them as if I had known them since my earliest years (hey, that's the start of "Lord Lundy"). In his "Beasts", "Cautionary Tales" and "Peers" verses, Belloc achieves a delightful synthesis of the fearless straight-ahead gaze of childhood (in the tradition of "The Story of Augustus, Who Would Not Eat His Soup") with the style of absolutely dead-pan English humor (e.g. Stephen Potter's "Gamesmanship"). Do not neglect the verses in "Peers" and "More Peers"; "Lord Hippo" and "Lord Lucky" are the equal of "Matilda" and "Jim". Note for Lord Peter fans: Dorothy L. Sayers has Peter Wimsey quote several times from these Belloc poems.

Just desserts for wicked children!
By Julie Garnet (jgarnet@optusnet.com.au)
I was very young when I was given my first copy of this book and I have never managed to forget any of the characters or their crimes. I think most of us know of 'Matilda' who "told such dreadful lies, it made one gasp and stretch ones eyes" but I fear that few know what befell 'Rebecca' who slammed doors or 'Jim' who ran away. More importantly our children are wholly unaware of the consequences of misbehaving. This is a wonderful book full of illustrations and verse designed to amuse and caution us all and leaves us with a moral tale of 'Charles', who shows us "what Everybody might become by simply doing right."

Bernard Herrmann's The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: A Film Score Guide (Film Score Guides), by David Cooper

Regarded as one of the greatest film composers of all time, Bernard Herrmann was responsible for some of the most memorable music in film. His work with Alfred Hitchcock produced a slew of classics including Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), and Psycho (1960). Several years before collaborating with Hitchcock, however, Herrmann composed the brilliant score for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), which remained a personal favorite of the composer's. Herrmann's score reinforces the film's romantic theme, and much of the music has an appropriately elegiac quality. In mood, orchestration, and even to some extent thematic identity, it seems to prefigure his music for Vertigo.

In this latest addition to the Scarecrow Film Score Guide series, author David Cooper examines Herrmann's career in general, as well as the specific elements that went into the creation of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir's score. Cooper traces the development of Herrmann's craft as a film composer, especially through his radio work, where he made contact with many of the great artists of the age, most notably Orson Welles. This association was to give him a passport to Hollywood and led to the scoring of his first film, Citizen Kane. Herrmann's subsequent film scores of the 1940s included The Devil and Daniel Webster, The Magnificent Ambersons, and Jane Eyre.

In this guide, Cooper considers Herrmann's musical technique and offers a theorization of some of the ways in which music can be "meaningful" in film. He also explores non-musical contexts of the film, including the screenplay's relationship to the popular novel from which it was adapted, as well as the contribution of director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the performances of Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, and the editing of Dorothy Spencer. Cooper also provides a quantitative, evidence-based study of the score. In doing so, he discusses the extent to which Herrmann adopted screenwriter Philip Dunne's suggestions for music in

Review
...David Cooper's approach―tightly organized like an intro film theory class―will instill, certainly in some, new methods of appreciating film music....Like prior volumes in the series, the book's first section gives us an excellent portrait of the events that led the cast, crew, and composer towards the film project...Cooper's technical and theoretical breakdowns will be of particular interest to composers...There's no doubt this book is the result of a long and detailed effort to craft an important educational reference... (Music From The Movies, January 2007)

In this guide, Cooper (music and technology, U. of Leeds, UK) examines Bernard Herrmann's craft as a film composer, particularly in the score of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. He also explores nonmusical elements of the film, including the screenplay's relationship to the popular novel from which it was adapted, the contribution of director Joseph Mankiewicz, and the performances of Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. A rundown of all the cues in Herrmann's manuscript is followed by an examination of the score as a musical artifact. (Reference and Research Book News)

Sweetheart, South Carolina, the home of happily-ever-after

Devlin Warwick blew past the ornate sign with its elegant gold scrollwork. He didn't bother to hide his curling scowl. Please. The only happily-ever-after he'd ever gotten was the day he'd left town.

Hitting the gas, Dev pushed his shiny red pickup past the speed limit. He watched the needle creep to fifty, sixty and head straight for eighty. He didn't care. He wanted the speed. Let Sheriff Grant pull him over. Unlike the last time they'd tangled, at least the officer would have a legitimate reason to hassle him.

With the windows rolled down and heavy metal cranked loud, Dev enjoyed the anticipation. The citizens of Sweetheart had no idea what was about to hit them. He'd waited a long time for this moment.

He'd left—been run out of town was more like it—ten years earlier with everyone's condemnation ringing in his ears. There was nothing the citizens of Sweetheart hated more than a scandal, although they certainly ate up the gossip that came with it. He'd given them plenty of both.

His grandfather had kicked him out. He'd lost the only family he had left. The irony was that he hadn't actually committed the crime they'd tried and convicted him of in the court of public opinion.

But now he was back. Successful, despite their predictions that he'd end up a drug addict or a felon, just like his dad.

He was going to enjoy this.

Dev pulled into the driveway of his grandfather's house and sat with the motor idling. There was always the inn….

But, he reminded himself, the past didn't live inside these walls. Neither did his grandfather, who'd died four years ago. Dev hadn't even known he was sick.

The darkened windows mocked him, reminding him that he was completely alone. The house was his now, not that he'd seen it since the night he left.

It hadn't changed.

The facade was well maintained, but there were still signs of wear and tear. The house was at least fifty years old and had been well used. No doubt the second stair to the porch still creaked. The shutters needed repainting. Maybe he'd take care of that while he was here.

At least the front landscaping was immaculate. He paid enough money to keep it that way. Trimmed shrubs filled the space behind the stone retaining wall. He'd missed the amazing shade of blue of his grandmother's hydrangeas by a couple of months. No matter how hard he tried, he could never quite get the same color. Her rosebushes in the back might have late blooms, though.

The few memories he had of his grandmother all involved her kneeling on the ground, her hands deep in dirt. For a little boy, furious and lost, the quiet moments they'd shared in the garden had been a lifeline he'd desperately needed.

Unfortunately, those visits had been all too short. The taste of something sweet that had turned bitter because he could never stay longer than a few weeks. When he'd come to live in Sweetheart full time at the age of fifteen his grandma had already been gone.

He had mixed emotions about walking through the dark green front door. The specter of that last night reared its ugly head. Yelling, screaming, his grandfather throwing one of his grandmother's prized figurines at the wall as he ordered Dev out.

Broken pieces of ceramic scattering across the floor. Blood trickling from a nick in his cheek.

Without thought, Dev reached for the scar. The pad of his finger ran down the puckered flesh, a constant reminder of the price he'd paid for something he hadn't even done.

But he'd learned his lesson well. If you were going to get punished for the sin you might as well enjoy committing it.

If only he could manage to hold on to the rage of that night. But if the house held some of his worst memories, it also held the best.

His grandfather, the closest thing he'd had to a father, had patiently taught him how to use power tools in the dusty, dank garage. Together they'd spent countless hours throwing a ball at the hoop tacked to the side of the house. They'd moved silently together in the kitchen as they both attempted, badly, to cook dinner.

When he'd had nowhere else to go his grandfather had taken him in, given him a home and his first taste of tough love. After the kind of mindless liberty he'd known all his life, Sweetheart had been like a prison, full of rules he didn't give a damn about.

His grandfather had expected a lot. The crushing weight of that responsibility had been so constricting, especially when Dev knew he couldn't live up to it.

Better to accept the low expectations and just embrace the inevitable. It was almost a relief when he could let go of the secret hope that this time somehow things would be different. They never were.

At least not back then. Now… After years of hard work he was successful. And low-balling the Sweetheart Consortium's bid for their new resort had been an easy decision. He might lose a little money on the job, but he could afford the hit. And the time away to oversee this project himself.

These days he rarely took on a job personally. He had several managers who normally went to the sites. Lately he'd spent more time in boardrooms than with his hands deep in the earth. Sweetheart was a chance to remedy that…and get a little revenge of the see how successful I've become variety.

He was looking forward to the moment when the town realized they'd hired him. Watching them squirm was going to be sweet.

It was just his luck that he'd arrived in time for one of the splashy parties Sweetheart loved. The Fall Masquerade would afford him the perfect opportunity to scope things out while keeping his presence a secret.

Tonight he planned to watch and learn. What had changed and who was in charge? How could he exploit the situation to turn the screws on those who'd assumed the worst of him without bothering to actually discover the truth?

Grabbing his garment bag and duffel, Dev finally went inside to change. He might prefer the jeans and work boots he wore when tromping around a site, but he was equally comfortable in the tailored suits required when making presentations to conglomerates and corporations.

The red silk mask was unusual, but it would keep his identity a secret, at least for tonight. And he had to admit he enjoyed the private joke—the top twisted up into two pointy devil horns. The devil among the saints.

Tonight he'd take in the spectacle. Tomorrow he'd get to work. And relish their frustration as the citizens of Sweetheart tried to make his life hell.

The difference between now and ten years ago was that this time there was nothing Sweetheart could take.

A buzz of anticipation and excitement ran through the room. The Fall Masquerade was always a highlight of the year. Everyone loved the chance to dress up and be anonymous for a little while.

Well, everyone except Willow Portis. Despite no one knowing who she was, she felt uncomfortable. Stupid. Waiting for someone to laugh at her costume. Although, so far all she'd gotten were compliments.

"Quick, touch me."

Surprised, Willow stared at the gladiator. The costume would have worked better if he'd had the ripped body to match. "What? Why?"

"So I can tell my friends I've been touched by an angel."

Compliments and bad pickup lines. Willow touched him all right—she shoved the idiot out of her way. Deciding there was safety in numbers, she walked over to the tables set up with refreshments. Her friend Jenna was catering, although Willow hadn't seen her.

Settling for punch, she crossed her arms over her chest and scanned the crowd for a familiar face. Even living in Sweetheart her whole life, and knowing everyone at the party, it was difficult to tell who was behind some of the masks.

Which was exactly what she was counting on—that no one would recognize her.

With nothing better to do, Willow stood and watched, trying to figure out who people were. Tarzan and Jane were clearly Tony and Michelle Sewell. The superhero with them was Wes Unger, Tony's best friend since grade school. The sexy nurse was Carol Ann Kline, a transplanted divorcee, hell-bent on hooking a Sweetheart man.

Distracted by her little game, Willow didn't realize someone was behind her until a long shadow spread across the table. Heavy hands landed on her waist and then ran slowly up her ribs.

She jumped. Her skin crawled. Smacking down on the hands, she stopped them from traveling higher. "What are you doing?"

"Checking for injuries. The fall from heaven must have hurt."

Willow bit back a groan. "Seriously?"

"Trust me, I'm a doctor."

Using the sharp points of her elbows, Willow pushed the guy away from her and turned. Indeed, he was dressed as a doctor, complete with green scrubs, stethoscope and a surgical mask obscuring half his face.

From somewhere deep inside, a fit of pique threatened to take over. The doctor reached for her again, but she held out a hand to stop him. To his credit, he didn't push. He was pissing her off, but he wasn't dangerous, just obnoxious and uncouth.

"If you touch me again, I'm going to make you regret it."

Maybe using a temporary rinse to dye her hair a shocking red had been a bad idea, after all. At the time, covering up her dark, ordinary brown had seemed like a smart move. But combined with the mask that obscured half her face, it seemed to make her unrecognizable. Although it was entirely possible that the dress she'd designed was more responsible for the attention she was getting.

She'd wanted to be daring. To take a risk.

For the past several months, she'd been fighting hard against a restlessness she couldn't explain. Her business was doing well. She had more requests for exclusive wedding gown designs than she had time to fulfill, and stores all around the world had picked up her latest collection. The boutique was thriving. Clients came from all over the South for wedding, bridesmaid and prom dresses—and everything else that went with those important purchases.

After putting herself into debt to open her design company and boutique with Macey, her business partner and friend, the scales had finally started to tip in the past few years.

By most standards she was successful.

So, why did she feel so…lost?

If she was honest with herself she'd admit the disquiet had started when she began designing Hope's wedding dress. It wasn't that she begrudged her friend happiness…it just brought home that she'd spent all of her energy on her business and none on her personal life.

She designed wedding gowns all day, but the prospect of creating her own felt like a dream completely out of reach. The constant barrage of giddy brides searching through their merchandise for that dream dress was getting to her. And if she wasn't careful, the jaded edge she'd developed was going to morph into complete indifference. When that happened, her ability to create magical, romantic and sexy dresses would dry up.

Part of the reason she kept her business in Sweetheart was because of the atmosphere. The entire town was built around the idea that love and marriage could equal lifelong happiness. And her creative process needed that inspiration. She designed dresses for the most important day in any woman's life…she had to believe there was more beyond that day, or the creations would just turn into piles of expensive material and beads with no heart.

It had been a long time since she'd felt desired and sensual in her own skin. So tonight she was taking advantage of the disguise to be daring, something she did not do. She was stepping out on a limb, secure in the knowledge that she could keep her little walk on the wild side a secret.

The masks provided anonymity and freedom. To further confuse everyone, she'd designed a dress she'd never, in the light of day, consider wearing. One of her own sexy, slinky creations paired with two arching angel wings she'd hand-stitched and then laced onto the back of the bodice. Stark white feathers rose behind to tower over her by at least a foot. Instead of wedding white, she'd made the dress out of a pale silvery gray.

The tight bodice, flared mermaid skirt, flowing sleeves and naked shoulders showed off more of her body than she was usually comfortable with. Willow had worked hard to build the image of a quiet, accomplished businesswoman. She clung to it, wrapping the familiar shield around her. Flaunting her body went against years of trying to live down the scandal of her sister's disgrace.

Rose had always worn the smallest, tightest things she could get away with. She'd stayed out all night, drunk excessively and embraced everything their parents had warned her to avoid. Everyone had hoped her older sister would outgrow her penchant for pushing boundaries and making mistakes, especially when she eloped with an older man who had an established, settled life. Perhaps his love would be enough to curb her destructive behavior.

Unfortunately, it wasn't.

Not only hadn't he settled her, he'd been betrayed by Rose in the worst way. Then, after the divorce, her sister had headed as far as she could get from Sweetheart, taking the settlement and becoming a showgirl in Sin City. Willow cringed every time she thought of Rose on stage, topless in front of thousands of strangers. But Rose refused to cash the checks Willow sent, insisting she didn't need the help.

Forcing the unhappy thoughts away, Willow realized maybe it was inevitable that Rose would pop up in her mind tonight. Even as she'd put the dress and mask on, part of her had felt as if she was betraying the reputation she'd fought hard to build.

Needing a break from the blatant sexual come-ons, Willow worked her way into the corner. It was her default position for these types of events. Having the solid support of the wall behind her was comforting and familiar.

She was seriously considering calling it a night when her friend Tatum, the local florist who had designed the amazing red, orange and yellow centerpieces, sidled up beside her.

"Do I want to know what prompted this little outfit?"

Willow cut wary eyes to her friend. If any of their group would understand, it would be Tatum. She was a no-nonsense, make-no-apologies kind of person. Willow admired her for that self-confidence. Tatum didn't need anyone's approval.

After spending her entire life worrying what others thought, Willow was envious. But she had no idea how to adopt Tatum's cavalier attitude. It just wasn't her.

"What do you mean?" she asked, still uncertain if Tatum knew who she was. She hadn't told any of her friends what she'd planned to do tonight. She'd been apprehensive about their reactions. She wasn't interested in being razzed for the decision…or talked out of it.

Tatum's pale green eyes raked Willow from the tip of her head to the toe of the designer heels peeking out beneath her hem.

"Well, let's start with the hair. I really hope it's temporary. While I'm all for taking a risk, you've never struck me as a red kinda girl. And the dress. Don't misunderstand, it's gorgeous—how could it not be? You designed it—but a little revealing for you, isn't it?"

Oh, Tatum knew it was her. "Thanks, Mom."

Her friend chuckled, sipped on the glass of punch she held. "Don't get me wrong. If you really want to go there, I'll support you one hundred percent. But as long as I've known you, this—" her hand waved up and down to take in Willow's entire ensemble "—has never been your thing."

Tatum turned, giving her back to the room and blocking out everyone else. Her stare was serious and sharp. "I've had my fair share of one-night-stand regrets. I just want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into."

Willow shook her head. "No one said anything about a one-night stand."

"Please, honey, that dress screams 'screw me.' Right along with the underlying air of innocence that not even your amazing creation can completely cover up. You're like catnip, and every single man here is sniffing."

heated second chance at love romance

The Devil She Knows
Kira Sinclair
Harlequin Blaze, Aug 20 2013, $5.50
ISBN: 9780373797707

Devlin Warwick returns home from Atlanta to Sweetheart, South Carolina after being away for a decade. He has a goal to prove to those do-gooders who ran him out of town as a bad boy that they judged him wrong. Thus he ironically wears a devil's costume for the town's fall masquerade.

Wedding dress designer Willow Portis is Sweetheart's good girl. For the masquerade she dresses as a sexy angel. When the devil and angel meet at the ball, each is stunned by the attraction and share the best night of their respective lives until the masks come off as Willow sees the man who broke her heart ten years ago.

The latest Sweetwater romance (see She's No Angel) is a heated second chance at love tale. The lead couple is a delightful pairing of the devil and the angel though he has some angelic traits and she has some devilish inclinations. A suspense subplot adds tension but also feels unnecessary as this couple holds the fine plot together with their history and a town that insists love is not enough.

Outcast returns after 10 years to wreak havoc.
By Affaire de Coeur
This latest in Kira Sinclair's series set in Sweetheart, South Carolina, stands alone well and features a compelling hero and heroine and sizzling sexual tension. Though readers may be able to deduce the culprit in the mystery subplot, the pacing is perfect.

Poor characterization, weak plot, she lied, he lied. I've read other books in the series and that made this even more disappointing.
