Holy and Human: Overcoming spiritual struggles to live a holy life, by Earle L. Wilson

There is often a disconnect between what we expect God's grace to accomplish for us and the daily reality of living. We begin the Christian life with great hope and optimism, but as inevitable as any marathon runner's midcourse battle, we eventually run into spiritual walls, made of the often-painful realities of life—doubts, fears, frustrations, failures, and temptation. We have all struggled with this conflict, which seems to be at the core of our beings.

With unusual warmth and compassion, Earle Wilson writes of the struggle to live the holy life—and of the victory that God provides.

Singing: The First Art, by Dan H. Marek

The Italian singing technique Bel Canto instructs, "He who knows how to breathe and how to pronounce, knows how to sing." Singing: The First Art incorporates the techniques of Bel Canto along with those of masters like Berton Coffin and Manuel Garcia to promote and facilitate vocal excellence. Many concepts are described, from correct posture and alignment to improving and maintaining proper breathing, from good pronunciation and diction to producing an even, pure tone, and from vocal ranges to singing within and smoothly shifting between vocal registers. Mannes Vocal Faculty member Dan H. Marek effectively breaks down these complicated concepts with clear exercises, helping the vocal student to achieve freedom and complete control over his or her instrument.

A primary section on the history of singing stresses the importance of understanding vocal history while inspiring and motivating the student through the experiences of opera stars such as Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas, and Jussi Björling. The second section explains vocal techniques, including the use and proper pronunciation of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), and provides 64 specific exercises with clearly defined goals designed to overcome faults and to develop vocal virtuosity. Complete instructions for transposing the exercises for both male and female voices are included, as well as drawings of the exercises, musical examples from vocal literature, excellent anatomical illustrations by Frank Netter, MD, and copious photographs of opera stars. Singing: The First Art is an invaluable text for students, professionals, singers, conductors, composers, and vocal medical professionals, or anyone interested in understanding and appreciating the vocal art.

Review
The first part of this textbook for vocal students is devoted to tracing the historical background of the art of singing from ancient times to the present. Subsequent chapters teach practical vocal techniques, beginning with the Bel Canto method of breathing. Marek (voice, Mannes College of Music) has also provided approximately 60 vocal exercises for developing vocal virtuosity. The volume is illustrated with b&w anatomical drawings and photographs of opera stars.... (Reference and Research Book News, May 2007)

Singing: The First Art is both a history and a manual....Pedagogues who have not read Coffin's texts will find this an accurate and accessible overview; teachers who are familiar with the work will find it a balanced and practical interpretation of the method. (Journal of Singing, November 2008)

provides useful references....well written and well supported by illustrations and musical examples....[Marek] has done singers, and those who are interested in singing, a great service by drawing together some of the major sources of literature on vocal history and vocal technique. Some great ideas here, but...
By Amazon Customer
"Singing: The First Art" is a great book with a unique approach to vocal pedagogy. The first part of the book is dedicated to the history of the vocal art from the time of the early days of opera to 20th Century greats like Caruso, Callas, and Chaliapin. Old methods of training singers are touched upon as well as their approaches to the vocal craft.
The real meat of the book lies in the second section entailing the vocal technique of Bel Canto. Marek uses plenty of sources in his analysis and descriptions giving a considerable amount of authority to these concepts. The most outstanding chapter in the book by far is on breathing. He manages to fill in the gaps of other authors writings by discussing "thoracic" breathing in creative terms. His remarks on the breath "standing still" are priceless and an immediate key to finding the muscular antagonism necessary to healthy "support".
The book seems to meander off course in the description of "acoustic registers" - much of the information has been covered in the writings of Coffin. The musical examples are confusing when terms like X Pipe and U Pipe are not mentioned anywhere in the text. The charts of the individual voices are terribly confusing and not explained ANYWHERE in the text. Each chart features three tiers of phonetic letters, but what are they doing there and what do they mean in this context? The author could have better explained these charts. I was left scratching my head for the latter half of the book. It would have been more than beneficial to have included a compact disc of Old school singers with examples of these register concepts. Even singers demonstrating the exercises would have given a starting point for the teacher and student to begin to work.
Unfortunately, I cannot give this book a five star rating due to these components: a disjointed and unfocused discussion of acoustic registers and the lack of some sort of supplemental media to show demonstrations of these concepts.
I also take umbrage to the tremendous price of the book. Sixty-five dollars for a book of this type is rather overpriced. One would better spend that money on any of the works of Miller, Vennard or Coffin to grasp these concepts. The book is also a paperback.
I admire Mr. Marek's efforts immensely and with improvements in the clarity of the acoustic chapter and the addition of a CD, perhaps this could become one of the newest and most important books on the Bel Canto Method.

Starvation - Desperation. Implore good to come in because kids are hungry and rent is due.

Contemporary Announcement - There will be good times and bad.

Martial Choreograph - Youth, preocupied, and unfamiliar with failure - show me too how to be like you.

To A Suitor - Advice: Persist and you'll be rewarded.

Insomniac - Can't sleep.

***** Weekend Glory - Work, pay bills, fun on weekends.

***** The Lie: Not expressing your true feelings so as not to influence someone you care for. No big deal if you leave me.

The Last Decision. Death's a coming. Dark. Too dark. Can't: see, eat, hear, and lastly live.

Slave Coffle (coffle - a chained line of animals, slaves, etc.) - Hard times. Just beyond reach: comfort, quenched thirst, and love. Now beneath my walking: long hard times, unpleasantness, and no hope. Then before dawning: overwhelmed, dreaded, and death.

***** My Life Has Turned To Blue - Like the county song "Don't It Make my Brown Eyes Blue". I like this poem. At first I thought it was about getting old, permanent loss, possibly death, but the last verse implies that things will get better, go back to what they once were, with the passage of time. I like the blending of colors: Verse 1: golden, rosy, gray, and blue. Verse 2: green to dew, red done flew, left alone to blue. Verse 3: good news, winter, spring, summer's due, BUT until I see you: green grass turned to blue.

Alanson B. Houghton: Ambassador of the New Era (Biographies in American Foreign Policy), by Jeffrey J. Matthews

Alanson B. Houghton—American industrialist, politician, and diplomat—was the world's most influential diplomat during the "New Era" of the 1920s. Houghton, who served as ambassador to both Germany (1922–1925) and Great Britain (1925–1929), offers a unique window into the formation and implementation of American foreign policy. This fascinating new text by Jeffrey J. Matthews provides a clear and concise account of Houghton's diplomatic experience and consequently a fresh assessment of U.S. foreign policy during a pivotal decade in world history.

As the leading ambassador in Europe, Houghton played a key role in the major diplomatic achievements of the era, including the Dawes Plan for reparations, the Locarno security treaties, and the Kellogg-Briand peace pact. While Hougton's significant contributions to these international accords is fully explored, the major theme of this book is his emergence as chief critic of U.S. foreign policy within the Harding and Coolidge administrations.

Alanson B. Houhgton: Ambassador of the New Era offers students a concise historical narrative and a substantive reevaluation of 1920s American foreign policy. This text will help students understand why the United States failed to establish a stable world order during the New Era and additionally sheds light on the key historiographical themes of isolationism, new-imperialism, and corporations. For students taking courses on the Gilded Age, the interwar years, and U.S. foreign policy, this new volume will be an invaluable resource.

Review
Jeffrey Matthews has made an important contribution to the literature on American foreign policy in the Harding-Coolidge era. This fine biography, based almost entirely on heretofore unexploited original sources, traces the career of America's most influential ambassador to Europe during the New Era. Houghton served not merely as U.S. ambassador to the Court of St. James in 1925–29, he became the leading in-house critic of Secretary Kellogg's timid involvement in European affairs. All students of American diplomacy between the wars will want to read this book. (Stephen A. Schuker, William W. Corcoran Professor of History, University of Virginia)

Anyone seeking to understand the complex foundations of American diplomacy in the modern age will want to read this first biography of arguably the world's most influential ambassador during the interwar period. This book is especially compelling when analyzing Houghton's conclusion that Washington failed to establish a stable world order in the 1920s because the conservative policies of the nation's leaders were inadequate to solve postwar problems. Based on extensive archival research, this lively, well-researched political biography is balanced yet provocative, and is an important addition to the history of foreign policy. (Nancy Unger, Santa Clara University)

Jeffrey Matthews' biography of Alanson B. Houghton fills a significant gap in the way most of us think about the history of the United States. It is important not only because it tells us about one of the most influential diplomats of the 20th century, it also elucidates in considerable detail a largely forgotten era in our history. The 1920s are mainly remembered for prohibition, jazz, flappers, gangsters, and a stock market irrationally exuberant. Not many Americans would consider the '20s the decade that established our subsequent role in the world. But it was, and Alanson B. Houghton, as Matthews brilliantly demonstrates, understood better than any of his contemporaries what that role had to be. . . . We can be grateful to Alanson B. Houghton for the way he helped America begin to deal with the reality of global leadership, and to Professor Matthews for telling us the story in fascinating and rewarding detail. (Charles E. Courtney Arches)

This study is a welcome addition to our understanding of New Era diplomacy and Houghton's role as prescient critic of that policy. (Journal of American History)

Alanson Houghton held two of the most important diplomatic positions during the 1920s, U.S. ambassador to Weimar Germany and later Great Britain. His public career provides a unique prism through which to view America's failed search for a stable European order in the wake of the Great War. Jeffrey Matthews's new biography, the first full study of Houghton, is a well-written and thoroughly researched examination of a diplomat whose warnings about the weakness of America's engagement in Europe were never heeded, ultimately with disastrous consequences. (Thomas Alan Schwartz, Vanderbilt University)

Alanson B. houghton was a name lost as an important player in 20th century American history. Matthews work

helps connect the dots between the end of WW1 and Hitlers' invasion of Poland and illustrates Houghtons'

prescience in world affairs.Wonderfully written piece that weaves the various players in U.S. and European

government into an understandable story of diplomatic successes and failures leading to WW2.

Navajo Tradition, Mormon Life: The Autobiography and Teachings of Jim Dandy, by Robert S. McPherson, Jim Dandy, Sarah E. Burak

Born in the early 1940s in northern Arizona’s high country desert, Jim Dandy began life imbued with the traditions of the Navajo people. Raised by his father and grandfather—both medicine men—and a grandmother steeped in Navajo practices, he embraced their teachings and followed in their footsteps. But attending the LDS Placement program in northern Utah changed his life’s course when he became a member of the Mormon Church. Following graduation from high school, Jim served an LDS mission among his people, obtained a bachelor’s degree, and entered the work force in southeastern Utah as a career counselor, teacher, and community advocate who improved educational opportunities on the Navajo Reservation.

Jim has led a life of service and teaching. He maintains the traditional philosophy with which he was raised and the Mormon beliefs that he learned and continues to follow; his life reflects the values inherent in these two different worlds. Readers interested in Navajo philosophy will find his blend of these two distinct views fascinating, while others will better understand the effects of the controversial placement program on the life of one individual. However, this is primarily the warm story of a man’s life among his people and his love for them and their culture.

Review

“Jim Dandy is a story of a success in the Mormon Placement Program. He was knowledgeable in the Navajo traditional ceremonial ways and viewed them not as an obstacle but as a strength in his Mormon doctrinal studies. From time to time when he encountered problems, he would go back to traditional training for answers.”—Henry Walters, Emeritus Director of Hatathli Museum, Navajo elder, and Medicine Man

"Though the book is essentially the story of one man, it's also an excellent dialogue about the transition of a deeply spiritual people into an oft-times unsettling world. It's written simply enough for those with a mild interest in Indian affairs to read, but its depth will attract scholars and history buffs as well."
—Deseret News

“Navajo Tradition, Mormon Life is a creative combination of personal narrative and scholarly work. [McPherson and Dandy] have created a landmark study for finding a common ground between Mormon and Navajo teachings.”—BYU Studies Quarterly

“Jim Dandy has much to say that is of great importance…. I have learned so much from him, and will be forever grateful for having read his story."—Association for Mormon Letters

“Jim Dandy is a fascinating person, not just a successful educator, community leader, and role model, but also someone with very interesting beliefs about many topics… [His is] the story of a contemporary Navajo who continues to bridge multiple worlds and successfully combine traditional Navajo, Mormon, and Anglo approaches to life while remaining actively involved even after retirement. “
–American Indian Culture

A book that's needed to be written
By Kathy A Edwards
McPherson is appropriated regarded as a thoughtful and respectful scholar of the Navajo--especially those in the Utah section of the reservation. He has developed a finely-tuned sense of listening to Navajos and allowing them to tell their own stories. Though Jim Dandy's experience may be somewhat unique, it is fascinating to experience how his Navajo traditions and LDS beliefs form together and support one another. McPherson is respectful of both belief systems and finds no need to diminish one in highlighting the other. His two chapters providing historical and religious context are exceptional. And Jim Dandy's voice is clear throughout. Finishing the book, one wants to meet Mr. Dandy and ask him to sign their copy of the book. This is a book that many will have been waiting for--and they won't be disappointed.

The A to Z of Slovenia (The A to Z Guide Series), by Leopoldina Plut-Pregelj, Carole Rogel

For more than 1,300 years Slovenes had lived in Eastern Europe without having a separate Slovene state, but in December of 1990, they voted for independence, or, put more appropriately, for "disassociation" from Yugoslavia. Unfortunately, Slovenia had to fight for its independence, which it did not fully achieve until 1995 after its bloody disintegration with Yugoslavia was over. Since independence, however, Slovenia has prospered; its economy is far ahead of other former communist states and in 2004 Slovenia acceded to both NATO and the European Union, the only republic of former Yugoslavia to do so.

The A to Z of Slovenia covers the history of Slovenia and its struggle to gain independence from communism. This is done through a detailed chronology, an introduction, appendixes, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on some of the more significant persons, places, and events; institutions and organizations; and political, economic, social, cultural, and religious facets.

The Politics and Economics of Park Management (The Political Economy Forum)From Rowman & Littlefield Publishers

The Politics and Economics of Park Management examines national protected area systems, in both developed and developing countries, that have made a transformation from 'fortress parks' to a sustainable use model. The contributors—park management, academics, and members of nongovenmental organizations—contend that successful institutional change in protected area systems involves not only the adoption of appropriate legal and regulatory regimes covering sustainable use, but also the development of an informal culture of sustainable resource use among all of a park's stakeholders. While this latter requirement is often difficult to achieve, the contributors show how these informal attitudes may evolve over time, both within the management structure of a park agency and the community of resource users. The case studies cited represent examples of successful institutional change, demonstrating both financial and conservation benefits to protected area agencies, that should serve as model for managing parks today.

Sons of Abraham: A Candid Conversation about the Issues That Divide and Unite Jews and Muslims, by Marc Rabbi Schneier, Shamsi Imam Ali

A prominent rabbi and imam, each raised in orthodoxy, overcome the temptations of bigotry and work to bridge the chasm between Muslims and Jews

Rabbi Marc Schneier, the eighteenth generation of a distinguished rabbinical dynasty, grew up deeply suspicious of Muslims, believing them all to be anti-Semitic. Imam Shamsi Ali, who grew up in a small Indonesian village and studied in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, believed that all Jews wanted to destroy Muslims. Coming from positions of mutual mistrust, it seems unthinkable that these orthodox religious leaders would ever see eye to eye. Yet in the aftermath of 9/11, amid increasing acrimony between Jews and Muslims, the two men overcame their prejudices and bonded over a shared belief in the importance of opening up a dialogue and finding mutual respect. In doing so, they became not only friends but also defenders of each other’s religion, denouncing the twin threats of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia and promoting interfaith cooperation.

In Sons of Abraham, Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali tell the story of how they became friends and offer a candid look at the contentious theological and political issues that frequently divide Jews and Muslims, clarifying erroneous ideas that extremists in each religion use to justify harmful behavior. Rabbi Schneier dispels misconceptions about chosenness in Judaism, while Imam Ali explains the truth behind concepts like jihad and Shari’a. And on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the two speak forthrightly on the importance of having a civil discussion and the urgency of reaching a peaceful solution.

As Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali show, by reaching a fuller understanding of one another’s faith traditions, Jews and Muslims can realize that they are actually more united than divided in their core beliefs. Both traditions promote kindness, service, and responsibility for the less fortunate—and both religions call on their members to extend compassion to those outside the faith. In this sorely needed book, Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali challenge Jews and Muslims to step out of their comfort zones, find common ground in their shared Abrahamic traditions, and stand together and fight for a better world for all.

Review
“Sons of Abraham represents the culmination of years of work by Rabbi Schneier, my partner at the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, Imam Ali, and myself to bring Muslims and Jews together all across the world.  Few people thought that these orthodox religious leaders could be friends, and even fewer believed their work would succeed, but Sons of Abraham shows how their friendship has created a model for a worldwide Muslim-Jewish reconciliation.”
—Russell Simmons, Chairman of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding and co-founder of Def Jam Records

“Through a robust discussion of the history and mindsets that define both Judaism and Islam, Imam Shamsi Ali and Rabbi Marc Schneier offer that the truest illustration of faith lies not in traditions or a myopic approach to piety, but rather in a deeply held belief in one God, a concern for human dignity, and a commitment to mutual respect.  The authors—in their friendship and in their service—offer a rare example of cooperation and provide a beacon of hope as we pursue peace between peoples torn apart by millennia of misunderstanding and mistrust.  Sons of Abraham is a work of political, social, and religious significance and a roadmap for how we should and can move forward.”
—Congressman André Carson

“In this book my friends Rabbi Marc Schneier and Imam Shamsi Ali show us that Muslims and Jews are not enemies, but friends who are united by our belief in a monotheistic god and our lineage to our forefather Abraham. The Rabbi and Imam’s friendship is a reminder that peace and friendship are possible between our peoples.”
—S. Daniel Abraham, Chairman, Center for Middle East Peace

FOREWORD

The end of the Cold War laid bare, and in some cases rekindled, long-existing conflicts rooted in racial, ethnic, and religious differences. At the heart of many of these conflicts, from the Balkans to Russia to China to Indonesia to Africa and most recently in Myanmar, is religious identity. Sometimes they involve persecuted minorities. Sometimes the involve fighting within a religion, as when Sunni fight Shia. Sometimes they involve terrorism and false claims that the killing of innocent civilians, even others of the same religion, is sanctioned by God or a prophet.

Of course, the conflict with the most profound consequences beyond its borders is the long dispute between Jewish Israelis and Muslim Palestinians and their Arab supporters. It echoes across the world. It is at the root of how Jews and Muslims understand and misunderstand each other in the United States.

As president, I worked for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East to create a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, used the power of the United States to stop the oppression and slaughter of Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo, and engaged in regular consultations with Muslim Americans on a wide range of issues. I also worked hard to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States and other nations. Many attacks were thwarted, both before and after I left office, but not at our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, or the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000.

After 9/11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and dozens of terrorist acts across the world—most recently the Boston Marathon bombings—it  is tempting to say this is an unsolvable conflict, a clash of civilizations that cannot be defused. Of course, this overlooks the fact that the vast majority of Muslims in the United States and elsewhere are law-abiding, peace-loving, hard-working people who want to live in harmony with both their neighbors and their faith. The situation is not hopeless.

For the last several years, my daughter, Chelsea, has served as cochair of the advisory board for the Of Many Institute, the largest interfaith student group in the United States, at New York University. Led by
Rabbi Yehuda Sarna and Imam Khalid Latif, these students live, talk, and do service projects together. NYU also offers a minor in interfaith leadership.

Still, there are too few people committed to reconciliation through honest dialogue. That’s why the efforts of Rabbi Marc Schneier and Imam Shamsi Ali to bring Jews and Muslims together, not only in the United States but also in Europe and the Middle East, are so important. Like true friends, they honestly face issues that divide Jews and Muslims, as well as what unites them as “sons of Abraham.” They not only talk the talk, they walk the walk. And their personal friendship is a poignant example of what is possible among people of deep faith and goodwill.

I have been inspired by their example, and I hope you will be, too, as you read this important book.

President Bill Clinton

INTRODUCTION

On the weekend before Thanksgiving 2012, in principle a time to celebrate fellowship, the news of Muslim and Jewish interaction was a depressingly familiar tale of bloodshed and wrath. Israel and Hamas were in the midst of an eight-day confrontation that would ultimately claim nearly one hundred sixty lives. Israel had assassinated a terrorist leader in Gaza several days earlier, Hamas had responded by launching lethal rockets into the civilian areas of Israeli cities, and Israel’s retaliatory bombing had killed innocent Palestinians as well as armed militants. In their intractable enmity, the two sides not only seemed bound to endlessly make war on one another but also to irreparably poison relations between Muslims and Jews throughout the world.

Certainly, the toxin was already loose in the United States. The nation had just concluded a presidential campaign in which Jewish voters were implored to choose the Republican, Mitt Romney, who accused Barack Obama of having “thrown Israel under the bus.” While this strategy did not work, or at least not well enough for Romney to win, it compounded the divisive mood in the country. During Romney’s drive toward the GOP nomination, several of his challengers for the nomination outdid themselves trying to be the most anti-Muslim—one promising never to have a Muslim in his Cabinet, another flourishing the canard that Muslims want to install Shari’a religious law, a third claiming that the Muslim Brotherhood had insinuated itself into the State Department. Well before the 2012 election had even begun in earnest, a congressional committee had conducted hearings on supposed Muslim subversion. In all of these demagogic episodes, American Jews were being asked implicitly or explicitly to take sides against American Muslims.

Yet on that same weekend before Thanksgiving, the members of a Jewish temple and Muslim mosque on Long Island came together to donate blankets, clothing, and food to the thousands of people uprooted by Hurricane Sandy. In Denver, Jewish and Muslim volunteers made a thousand peanut butter sandwiches to feed homeless and hungry people on the street. In suburban Detroit, young men, both Muslim and Jewish, played pickup basketball and then talked together about ways to improve the city. Just outside Washington, DC, Muslim and Jewish teenagers cleared debris and put down mulch in a park, then socialized over pizza. In the Bay Area of northern California, young professionals from Jewish and Muslim communities jointly discussed each religion’s teachings on business ethics.

These collaborations, set vividly against the backdrop of the Middle East missiles and the rancorous presidential campaign, were part of a larger program of “twinning” that matched up Jewish and Muslim congregations—primarily within the United States but also from as far afield as Baku in Azerbaijan. And that congregational program arose from and attested to the extraordinary collaboration of two brave and bold men, Rabbi Marc Schneier and Imam Shamsi Ali. This book is the story of these men: their lives, their friendship, their commitment to coexistence work, and their vision of the future for Muslims and Jews in America and beyond.

Sons of Abraham is a book of optimism, but not of naivete. Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali are not what one might call the “usual suspects” of ecumenical efforts—clergy who are reliably liberal, if not congenitally touchy-feely, on all theological and political matters. Rabbi Schneier is entirely a product of Orthodox Jewry. Imam Ali studied Islam in a madrassa and university that largely followed the stringent Saudi Arabian model. Both men, for a period of their adult lives, uncritically accepted the biased view of Jews and Muslims as being innately, inherently enemies.

Over time and with study and experience, however, both of these men grew, and eventually dared to challenge the conventional wisdom within their own religious communities. Against no small Amount of criticism from their own coreligionists, they forged their alliance. And Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali did so in the bitter, frightened, polarized years after the September 11 attacks. Their credibility is built on what might be called, to borrow a term from sports such as diving and gymnastics, the degree of difficulty.

The strength of their partnership also lies in their ability to disagree. Too often, interfaith dialogue operates under a well-intentioned kind of self-censorship in which controversial topics are avoided rather than engaged. No wonder so many otherwise laudable efforts can be so easily ridiculed as if they were folk songs being sung around the campfire. As this book demonstrates, Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali trust their friendship and their common cause deeply enough to address any issue. They take on anti-Semitism in the Muslim world and bigotry against Muslims among Jews. They delve into sticky theological issues, like the idea of chosenness in Judaism and the concept of Kheir Ummah, or best nation, in Islam. They even address the third rail of Israel and Palestine, and find a respectful, civil rhetoric with which to contend and dispute.

No one who knows of their work, and no one who learns of it from this book, can fail to be heartened. These are men of substance doing work of substance, taking significant risks against significant odds. I recall seeing them on the afternoon of September 9, 2011, two days before the tenth anniversary of the Al Qaeda terrorist attack on America. Hundreds of congregants were entering the Islamic Cultural Center, the largest mosque in Manhattan, for the Friday jummah service, the Muslim equivalent of Sabbath morning worship in a synagogue or Sunday Mass in a Catholic church. Beneath the center’s soaring dome, the congregants gathered, wearing Brett Favre jerseys or business suits or salwar kameez and covering their heads with crocheted skullcaps or Yankee caps turned backwards in hip-hop fashion. They had come to hear the weekly homily from their spiritual leader, Imam Ali. And they had come, too, to hear from the imam’s special guest, Rabbi Schneier.

The tenth anniversary of 9/11 offered an especially vivid test of their alliance, and that was why they made a point of appearing together at the Islamic Cultural Center. There was no way to mark this day without squarely facing the damage it had done—not only the three thousand deaths, not only the destruction of iconic buildings, but the way it had desecrated the image of Islam and damaged relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in America. Uttering mere niceties, the bromides of brotherhood, would not suffice at this jummah service. Neither would the lamentations of victimhood.

“My brothers and sisters,” Imam Ali said at one point, “the best way to meet the challenge in the days ahead is to engage minds, to change others’ perceptions, to talk to them, to make friends of them. We must be just to everyone, because justice is written in the Holy Qur’an. We must change our perception of others, and change their perception of us, to one of mutual respect. We have the responsibility to make it better. We are here as Muslims participating in all aspects of American life. Each one of you, without exception, must be an ambassador of Islam.”

Then, after welcoming several visiting ministers, Imam Ali introduced “one of my best friends,” Rabbi Schneier. He called him “my brother.” “This guy,” Imam Ali said, “is there every time we have a challenge in front of us.” Members of the congregation lifted up their smartphones and digital cameras to take photographs of the rabbi.

“We should not underestimate the importance of remembering,” Rabbi Schneier said. “The question is what to remember, how to remember, who to remember. Three thousand people were killed in the World Trade Center and the other tragedies—three thousand Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs. Let us remember that every life is sacred, that every life counts. And how do we remember that? By keeping the light of understanding. We share a common faith, and we share a common fate. And we, as Muslims and Jews, stand shoulder to shoulder.”

The book that Rabbi Schneier and Imam Ali have written offers eloquent evidence of that light. It tells us that human beings can grow beyond their prejudices. It tells us friendship and collaboration can survive civil disagreement. It tells us what has been done, and it tells us, most importantly, what those of us who care about the inevitably, inextricably shared future of American Muslims and American Jews still must do.

Cross the gaps between Judaism and Islam
By Henk-Jan van der Klis
Sons of Abraham brings a tough and honest interfaith dialogue between two representatives of Abrahamic religions, Judaism and Islam. Rabbi Marc Schneier, the eighteenth generation of a distinguished rabbinical dynasty and Imam Shamsi Ali, raised in a small Indonesian village, but after studies in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, work and several positions as imam eventually landed in the US as well as Schneier, took the challenge. They met in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In the book both men write alternating chapters, first about their background, current role and the way they met each other in the post 9/11 world. Both value their heritage, their core beliefs and holy books and traditions, but are also open for dialogue and digging into sensitive topics. So, by no means superficial, the material goes deep into splitting the actual sources / teachings and the way it is interpreted or acted in nowadays world regarding being religious, `The Chosen People` or `Best in breed', voluntary or compulsive conversion to a particular religion, jihad, loving your neighbor or stranger, Shari'a and positions on Israel, Palestinians and a single or two-nations solutions for Palestine, Jerusalem (and access to religious sites). By reaching a fuller understanding of one another's faith traditions, Jews and Muslims can discover that there are many similarities or common grounds, rather than huge gaps that cannot be bridges at all (except for launching missiles or raging wars). Striving for justice, kindness, service to the community, both within and outside your community of fellow believers, could really make a difference. Schneier and Ali are strong defenders of this common approach, though many of their brothers and sisters don't agree (yet). Samuel G. Friedman provided a foreword, an introduction is given by former US president Bill Clinton.

Allah is not Almighty God
By Jennifer
A good try, but History cannot be changed by hiding the facts.
The Qur'an states clearly in chapter 2 that Muhammad rejected God and the sacred place of Jerusalem, then he turned against the Jews and Christians. This is why the destruction of Christianity and the Jews is holy law in Islam. Like it or not.
Muhammad was the messenger of Allah, not God, and Islam is not a religion of Abraham.
In Arabic, the Qur'an and Sharia, Almighty God is Ilah and Allah is ‘the god’ in English.
Almighty God is Ilah, Ar Rahman, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.
Therefore the Qur’an was named The Criterion, the criterion between good and evil.
Qur’an 41:84 It is He Who is the only God in the heaven and the only God on the earth.
Ibn Kathir: This means He is the God of those who are in the heaven and the God of those on earth.
Qur’an 43:84 It is He Who is Ilah, God in the heaven and on the earth.
Qur’an 19:65 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, so worship Him and abide patiently in His worship. Do you know of any other with His Name?
Ibn Kathir: Ibn Abbas says, ‘There is no one named Ar-Rahman (the Most Beneficent) other than Him, Blessed and Exalted is He. Most Holy is His Name.’
See Quran chapters 19, 21, 25, 26, 36, 37, 41, 43, 67, etc.

Allah is always and only called Allah in Arabic.
Qur’an 6:3 And He is Allah in the heavens and on the earth.
Ibn Abbas: He is the One who is called Allah in the heavens and on the earth.
The Qur'an states that the religion of Allah abrogates the religion of Abraham.
The Shahada, the Muslim pledge of faith, denies God:
La ilaha ill-Allah, there is no God/god but Allah.
The sentence comprises a denial and an affirmation.
Negation: 'La ilah' negates all forms of God or god.
Affirmation: 'illAllah' affirms that there is only Allah.
Before you can say ‘I believe in Allah’(illa Allah) you have to reject or disbelieve in any other god or God (La illaha).

Brothers
By William Linehan
Sons of Abraham is authored by two men whose own relationship taught them the truths that they endeavor to teach us in their excellent book. Born and raised in very different places and cultures to very different families, they once thought their religions were not just different but antagonistic. As circumstance brought them together to develop mutual respect and then apparent affection, they began to clarify to one another many commonly misconstrued and misunderstood theological concepts including jihad, "chosenness", "best nation", the descendants of Amalek, and the depiction of Jews in the Qur'an with their implications for Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Knowledge resolved their inclination to conflict.

The common monotheistic, Abrahamic roots of each faith and their common acceptance of the same Prophets brought the two men to common pacific perspectives on each others' faiths. Rabbi Schneier cites long-established Jewish theology to note that Islam is indeed much more consistent with Judaism than Christianity, and Imam Ali quotes the Prophet Muhammad: "Indeed, your Lord is one, your father is one, there is no superiority of an Arab or a non-Arab, except piety, righteousness". Both authors cite their faiths' common emphasis on kindness and equanimity to illuminate the scriptural misinterpretations, distortions, and prevarications used by hatemongers to attack others and promote themselves.

In the end, the Rabbi and Imam discovered in their friendship what they bring to our attention in their book: sons of the same father are brothers.
