To Heal the Soul: The Spiritual Journal of a Chasidic Rebbe, by Kalonymus Kalman Shapira

Within the vast and varied body of chasidic literature, rarely does one find a chasidic rebbe writing about himself. Those rebbes who did choose to put pen to paper tended to write expositions on biblical or rabbinical texts, and in many cases it was their students and followers who copied down their teachings. Thus the modern reader is left with works that tend to be impersonal, esoteric, and often complex. The journal of Rabbi Shapira is unique in its use of first-person narrative to relay the inner thoughts, fears, and struggles of this bold leader as he responds to the pains of life. It offers guidelines for spiritual progress and several meditations based on an active imagination. Rabbi Shapira tells us that the purpose of this work is to bequeath a journal of his personal struggles and triumphs to posterity. Some entries are indeed very revealing; the Rebbe is not afraid to disclose his moments of self-doubt, his anger, his fears, and his fervent hope that his soul will remain strong as his body grows old. The more one reads of Rabbi Shapira's journal, the more insight and inspiration one will glean from its message. Young and old will find personal, spiritual guidance in these pages and be able to reap from the maternal fulfillment.

Job, Jonah, and the Unconscious: A Psychological Interpretation of Evil and Spiritual Growth in the Old Testament, by Michael Corey

Job, Jonah, and the Unconscious is the latest work by natural theologian M.A. Corey. It is a ground-breaking synthetic work utilizing the unique perspective of modern depth psychology to interpret the underlying meaning of two of the most fascinating books of the Old Testament, Job and Jonah. In the process it weaves together a unique development perspective on the age-old problem of evil that satisfies both the traditional theologian and the hard- core skeptic. It is able to do this by resorting to a concept of metaphysical necessity that is able to account for the temporary existence of evil in the world, while simultaneously preserving the omnipotence and omnibenevolence of God. The end result of this fascinating study is the elucidation of the cause of moral evil, along with the general defense of traditional monotheistic religion. Corey is Highy Gifted
By J.M. Lanerbach
Dear Dr. Corey,

I swear, your over-developed intellect would make a great topic for an X-file episode. How is it humanly possible to not only "KNOW OF" every single position, on every single scientific topic ever cogitated by mankind, but to also posess and in-detpth "COMPREHENSION OF" every single position as well?? I marvel when I thumb throgh the bibliographies in the back of your books. You are the scientific equivalent of Bach.I once read that it would take a highly skilled transcriptionist 80 years to simply HAND COPY, all the works of Bach..Let alone create them-all in a single lifetime!! When asked of the phenomenon of his fecundity Bach explained "the music doesn't come FROM me, but rather THROUGH me. This is you to a "T". Cannot everybody see, that you are an anomoly, a super human? One of those figures that show up in history every few hundred years? God created you to both TEACH and INSPIRE.

What an Incredible Synthesis Between Psychology and Theology
By A Customer
This is an amazing little book that presents the true underlying meaning of two of the Old Testament's most beloved books: Jonah and the Whale, and Story of Job. Both stories provide the author with extremely fertile ground for applying modern Jungian principles to ancient Biblical teachings. In the process, a brand new developmental approach to the problem of evil is gradually presented, all the way down to the reality of hell itself. No where else will the reader find such a psychologically rich description of hell and purgatory.

A collection of groundbreaking research by a leading figure in neuroscience.

This book compiles, for the first time, Stephen W. Porges’s decades of research. A leading expert in developmental psychophysiology and developmental behavioral neuroscience, Porges is the mind behind the groundbreaking Polyvagal Theory, which has startling implications for the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, and autism. Adopted by clinicians around the world, the Polyvagal Theory has provided exciting new insights into the way our autonomic nervous system unconsciously mediates social engagement, trust, and intimacy.

Review
“[C]hallenges professionals who interact therapeutically, educationally, clinically or even socially with vulnerable populations to share knowledge and work across our specific disciplines, to prevent, identify and treat mental illness.” (Journal of Unified Psychotherapy and Clinical Science)

“Stephen Porges has been at the forefront of the investigation of the interplay between neurophysiological processes and developmental status.... It is with The Polyvagal Theory that Porges now presents, in a well-delineated and articulated volume, a highly testable set of hypotheses regarding how the human (and more broadly, mammalian) nervous system has evolved to promote affective regulation and social interaction.... I commend Porges on this effort. Substantial research across a significant career has been well considered and integrated into a quite engaging and stimulating model regarding the relationship between the heart and the brain.” (PsycCritiques)

“[O]ne of the most important books written on the nervous system in the last fifty years. Porges’s ambitious, meticulous, synthetic theory provides a missing link between mind and the nervous system. It also helps explain, in fine detail, how our individual nervous systems influence, and are influenced by, our interactions with others. Suddenly we understand things novelists have described for centuries: how it is that a facial expression, a gesture, a certain tone of voice, can trigger a radical mental reorganization, and lead to engagment, and how our mental and nervous system states shift. Porges’s studies and his theory of the social vagus represents a major advance in human knowledge, and is already improving the practice psychotherapy and mind-body medicine.” (Norman Doidge, MD, author, The Brain That Changes Itself)

“A truly revolutionary perspective on human nature, Porges challenges current theory, illuminates old findings so that we see them differently, and raises dozens of questions for new scientific research. The reach is broad, the depth astounding.” (Paul Ekman, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of California at San Francisco, and President & Founder, Paul Ekman Group, LLC)

“The Polyvagal Theory is at the leading edge of psychosomatic medicine and body-mind therapies. It is a vital contribution to scientifically-informed clinical practice. Psychologists, analysts, physicians, bodyworkers, and educators are provided with an essential map to help guide them in tracking the psychophysiological states of their clients, discern where they are ‘stuck,’ and help them to heal and move forward in life. Dr. Porges’s great contribution is now compiled in this one astounding comprehensive volume. It is a must-read for clinicians and psychobiological researchers.” (Peter A. Levine, PhD, author of In Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness)

Bi-Directional Model of Vagal Influence on Body/Mind
By Martin K.
I am merely a psychology-degree wielding 24 year old with a natural curiosity for anything that influences behavior. This theory, developed by Steven Porges over 40 years of research, is one of the most comprehensive examinations of the influence of the vagus nerves on the physiological and psychological functioning of humans. The theory hinges on the idea that there are three components of the autonomic nervous system (ANS): the reptilian unmyelinated vagus branch, the sympathetic nervous system, and the myelinated neomammalian vagus branch. These branches, in order, correlate to different behavioral responses. The unmyelinated controls homeostatic functions as well as the "freeze" response. As such it develops first, in utero. The sympathetic nervous system, through the spinal cord, controls fight/flight responses by activating the pituitary-adrenal-hypothalamic axis. Finally, exclusive to mammals is the myelinated vagus which acts primarily to control the heart rate via connections to the sinoatrial node of the heart. These components of the ANS act in phylogenetic order, so the myelinated vagus inhibits functioning of the sympathetic nervous system, which inhibits the unmyelinated vagus.

The focal point of Porges' book is that the development of the myelinated vagus, originating in nuclei called the nucleus ambiguus, is crucial to inhibiting the fight/flight/freeze responses in response to environmental stimuli. The assessing of risk in the environment, which he calls neuroception, is regulated unconsciously and the myelinated vagus helps to resist primal behavioral responses. The strength of the myelinated vagus can be measured using respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), which is an indication of beat-to-beat heart rate variability. When RSA is high, vagal "tone" is high, indicating a strong myelinated vagus. When the RSA is lower, it indicates less vagal "tone" and therefore a weaker myelinated vagus. Humans with low vagal tone are less likely to engage in prosocial behavior because they have less ability to prevent themselves from plunging into fight/flight/freeze behavior when posed with environmental challenges. Porges adds a fourth behavioral adaptation which is "social engagement" (to go along with fight, flight, and freeze responses). In mammals, prosocial engagement is facilitated by high vagal influences on the heart which prevent the individual from entering fight/flight mode. As Porges explains, these vagal influences are strong predictors of positive attachment, healthy social behavior, self-regulation, and even attention span.

The implications of this theory are vast, and it opens up a plethora of research topics for the coming generation of psychophysiologists. Hopefully this book can be as enlightening for other readers as it was for me. I just wanted to give a terse overview of the theory, but nothing can replace actually purchasing the book and delving deep into the subject matter. Enjoy.

Important, enlightening, but dry
By Harrison Koehli
Porges has made some very significant discoveries on the nature of emotion, the nervous system, and its significance for physical and mental health as well as a general understanding of human behavior: why we are the way we are. This book collects some of the most significant papers he's written on the topics, all on the basis of what he has come to call the "polyvagal theory". For decades the understanding of the autonomic nervous system and its relation to stress has been overly simplistic. It has ignored the very large role of visceral feedback on brain processes and the hierarchical nature of our response to the environment, whether it is safe or threatening.

The book is quite academic and uses scientific jargon, so be prepared for that. It can be quite dry and repetitive, given that the various chapters were written as essays and include a lot of necessary "background" material. That said, the repetition is great for learning what might otherwise be confusing and difficult topics. If you don't have any previous training in psychology, this is a great help. And the information is paradigm-changing in its importance.

Summing up just a few of the basics of the polyvagal theory, Porges bases his analysis on an in-depth study of the evolution of the nervous system from the simplest invertebrates to mammalian life and humans in particular. This approach brings with it some important insights. For one, our nervous system is constantly assessing the environment, whether it is safe or not. This process happens without our conscious awareness. Ordinarily, if the environment is safe, we predominantly use our newest "hardware", so to speak. We are socially engaging, communicative. We share, love, nurture, support, play. This is intimately tied with the myelinated vagus, which as a result of evolutionary processes, is intimately tied with heart rate, breathing, and the use of the muscles in the neck, head, and face. All of these are integral to the expression of emotion. But when we encounter a dangerous situation, we revert to an evolutionary 'older' system. We stop engaging socially and instead fight or flee. And if the danger looks hopeless, the primitive vagus takes over, immobilizing us for a painless death. Trauma can leave us stuck in one of those lower circuits, as can various forms of mental illness (autism, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, etc.).

Porges uses these concepts to analyze human behaviors, like play, sex, communication, monogamy in a new light. And all together, it demonstrates just how important it is to our well-being to have a good vagal 'tone'. That's where programs like Éiriú Eolas are so useful, as a way of calming down our stress response, reducing inflammation, and fostering healthy emotion and the vagal benefits of prosociality, bodily restoration and healing. As he points out, the state of the body is intimately tied to the mind. While external stimuli can trigger intense visceral states (fear, terror, rage), it works the other way, too. Visceral states (inflammation, illness, bodily stress) can influence our emotions and our general psychological state. An understanding of how these systems work, and how healthy states can be actively fostered, will go a long way to healing the many illnesses of civilization, whether they be mental illness like depression or anxiety disorders, or modern diseases.

After reading this book, I can't help but think that our society as a whole does NOT foster polyvagal health. We are less communicative, less helpful, less 'happy', less nurturing, and on and on. Hopefully this book will bring more awareness to the fact that these things are essential to human health, and we can do something about actively fostering them. Eiriu Eolas is doing that, as are some clinicians who utilize the advances made by Porges. Hopefully that will keep expanding. Until then, do read this book. It's a lot more coherent than the reigning theories at this time, and if you like understanding things, will not disappoint.

Finally Someone Takes the Autonomic Nervous System Seriously!
By Passionate Therapist
The real role of the autonomic nervous system in human functioning has been neglected far too long. Perhaps that is because our culture likes to think everything that is important is subject to the will while the autonomic nervous system is not. But authors like Antonio Damasio and Porges are starting to correct that bias. This book is a compilation of papers, slightly revised, that Porges wrote over the years with graduate students. As such there is some repetition as the polyvagal 'basics' are explained over and over. However, each time, it is explained slightly differently, resulting in a highly nuanced explanation of this crucial concept.

Therapists and other clinicians working with movement, body-based, and experiential therapies have long understood that chronic human emotional suffering involved some type of chronic shift of the balance of the autonomic nervous system toward the sympathetic. However, using the old two-part oppositional model of the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic versus parasympathetic) was not satisfying. This was in part because some physical manifestations of distress were parasympathetically mediated: asthma, ulcers, enuresis, irritable bowel disease, freezing reactions, etc.. This seemed to overturn the simplistic idea "parasympathetic good, sympathetic bad". But actually the manifestations listed above stem from a 'dorsal vagal' reaction. Now as Porges shows, "ventral vagal good, sympathetic worse, dorsal vagal worst" Now intuition and physiological models are back in line. The intuition of clinicians was always correct, the 'science' had to catch up.

The polyvagal theory is practically begging for implications to be drawn about the practical areas of lifestyle, physical exercises, interpersonal relations, social relations, psychotherapy, childrearing, family life etc... Porges manages to resist the temptation, perhaps because he feels a scientist should not go there. As another reviewer writes he does mention listening therapy, but if I am not mistaken, that was developed by Alfred Tomatis The Conscious Ear: My Life of Transformation Through Listening who Porges does not cite or credit, but that is a quibble.

Creatures of Prometheus: Gender and the Politics of Technology, by Timothy V. Kaufman-Osborn

Do human beings become creatures of the technology they create? Is gender an artifact of the work performed by such manufactured things? Drawing on a broad variety of literary and philosophical sources, including Homer's Iliad, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, accounts of the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, and recent scholarship in feminist, postmodern, and political theory, this impressive book offers strikingly original ways for readers to think about technology, gender identity, culture, the environment, politics, and the ways women and men struggle to make sense of the gifts of Prometheus. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political theory, environmental thought, and gender, cultural, and literary studies.

Review
Kaufman-Osborn has offered a lively and provocative reading of pragmatism in light of everyday example and ordinary life, bringing philosophy to bear on questions of the body, sex, sexual difference, and some of the more urgent matters in modernity. His is a wonderfully readable book, witty, astute, insightful, and erudite. (Judith Butler, Maxine Elliot Professor of Comparative Literature and Critical Theory, University of California, Berkeley)

An unsettling and original book, one that thoroughly reorients the reader's relationship to artifacts by confronting the Descartes in each of us…The book is important and readable, and it should find its way onto the shelves of anyone concerned with technology and human agency, sexual difference, poststructural and postmodern theory.” (Barbara Cruikshank Journal of Politics)

Kaufman-Osborn has managed to take postmodernism to another turn, making it turn back upon itself by showing it to be itself its own discursive (artifactual) creation. (Curtis Johnson, Lewis and Clark College)

Offers a stimulating and persuasive reorientation to entrenched patterns of thinking and feeling about agents and artifacts. This is an exciting and timely new work of major significance for political theory, feminist theory, and ecological theory. (Christine Di Stefano, University of Washington, Seattle)

. . . a varied and enjoyable collection. . . . For anyone who is unfamiliar with the theory and practice of the environmental justice movement, this collection offers a stimulating introduction to the territory. (Graham Smith, University of Strathclyde Environmental Politics)

Tim Kaufman-Osborn has shown that political theory, from ancient to contemporary, is an exciting and relevant approach to questions about gender and technology. The book will be important for feminist and queer theorists hoping to be conversant with what is likely to be a key set of issues in the 21st century. (Judith Grant, University of Southern California)

Kaufman-Osborn constantly shows the reader how well-read he is in his book. He explores human relations to artisanal facts (and vice versa) throughout literature, philosophy, history of technology, and gender. (W. K. Bauchspies, associate professor, sociology of science, Georgia Institute of Technology CHOICE)

A richly textured work that engages thoughtfully with texts fromThe Iliad toFrankenstein, to the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes". The book's critical responses to recent debates in the body, agency, and experience are important contribution to feminist theory. (Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy)

An Amazing Intellectual Journey
By A Customer
TKO is a brilliant and visionary philosopher. In this book he challenges the reader to suspend the Cartesian assumption of subject/object dualism inherent to our Western perspective of relationship of self to other. In so doing, the reader is treated to a journey spanning cultures, politics, philosophy, art, manufacturing, and gender - all through the perspective of a uniquely crafted lens! Weaving complex ideas with real world issues, TKO offers a new way to view ourselves, others, and the world we have created. After reading this book, you will never look at a hammer or a vacuum quite the same again.

You have to be joking.
By John Hall
The author is an absolute genuis. Only a genuis could use this level of vocabulary to generate such pure organic bovine fertilizer. (On second thought, fertilizer is useful.)
His first chapter starts with the fallacy known as 'begging the question'. The footnote repeats the error.
Later he ponders whether it would be hard to distinguish between a live breathing daughter and a barbie. [Earth to Osborne: most children get that before they can talk.] He then continues this with (paraphrase) '... and would it be more of a problem if ...' type logic. [No, it wasn't a problem the first time and it isn't a problem now.]
His follow on paragraph tries to step back and say the issue isn't whether they are "really" different.
Sorry Timothy. Most of us have to live in what we call the 'real' world where being able to tell the difference between a daughter and a doll is a requirement. Only tenured professors can get away with believing reality is socially constructed.
This emperor has no clothes.
1 star because there are no zeros.

Pornography Embodied: From Speech to Sexual Practice (Feminist Constructions), by Joan Mason-Grant

What does it mean to conceptualize pornography as a material practice rather than as speech? Mason-Grant argues that this idea, fundamental to the work of Andrea Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon, has been obscured in legal wrangling and political polarization over their civil ordinance. Within the arena of legal argument, where the principle of free speech holds sway for progressive thinkers, their analysis of pornography is rendered, at worse, an apology for censorship and, at best, an argument about the social force of speech, rather than recognized as a fundamental challenge to the very idea of pornography as speech. In this book, Mason-Grant first shows how the persistent 'speech paradigm' inevitably obscures the innovative core of the Dworkin-MacKinnon critique of mainstream pornography. She then develops an alternative 'practice paradigm' that critically engages their analysis, capturing and extending its core insights about the role of pornography in sexual practice. Drawing on phenomenology of the lived body, this alternative paradigm provides a way of re-thinking how the pervasive use of mass-market heterosexual pornography contributes to the cultivation of an embodied and tacit sexual know-how that is subordinating, and raises important questions about alternative materials produced and used by sexual minorities. In her conclusion, Mason-Grant considers the implications of her analysis not for law, but for a critical pedagogy in youth sexuality education.

Classic Dining: Discovering America's Finest Mid-Century Restaurants, by Peter Moruzzi

Over the years, the softly lit wood-paneled interiors, starched tablecloths, curved booths, tuxedoed captains, and tableside service that once defined classic continentalstyle fine dining have gradually disappeared. Equally, the number of historic restaurants filled with character and old-school ambiance dwindle with each passing year. Yet, vestiges cling to life in cities large and small. Through vivid new color photography and vintage material, Classic Dining celebrates the great mid-century restaurants that continue to thrive in New York, the greater Miami area, New Orleans, Las Vegas, the Chicago area, Los Angeles, and across the United States. Includes a directory of mid-century restaurants across America.

Review
Silver Lake historian Peter Moruzzi roamed the country in search of restaurants that offer a vintage night out. Classic Dining: Discovering America’s Finest Mid-Century Restaurants (Gibbs Smith, $30) is a culinary history and travelogue that stops in New Orleans, Chicago, and Vegas. Back in L.A., he pays homage to Lawry’s carving cart, the Dresden’s Blood and Sand, and the Dal Rae’s Caesar. (Chris Nichols Los Angeles Magazine 2012-11-01)

Peter Moruzzi’s “Classic Dining” (Gibbs Smith, $30) is a time capsule of midcentury restaurants, the kinds where every dish had two names: Oysters Rockefeller, Steak Diane, Cherries Jubilee, Bananas Foster. (Stephen Heyman New York Times- T Magazine Bookshelf 2012-10-25)

"A time capsule of midcentury restaurants, the kinds where every dish had two names: Oysters Rockefeller, Steak Diane, Cherries Jubilee, Bananas Foster." (New York Times Style Magazine 2012-11-18)

"explore what it was like to swagger one's way into swanky dining establishments in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, and New Orleans during the Mad Men era. Learn about the establishments, some still with us and many long gone, where shish kabobs and bananas foster were grandly presented in flames, Caesar salad was prepared tableside, prime rib was served from fancy carts, and dishes such as oysters Rockefeller and lobster thermidor were the norm." (Flavorwire 2012-11-18)

"a glossy, full-color, coast-to-coast tour of the restaurants your parents or grandparents went to on fancy occasions -- many of which are still with us, at least for the time being." (LA Weekly 2012-11-18)

"Peter Moruzzi makes your mouth water with a lavishly illustrated trip to the finest historic eateries in America. Your job: eat at them before they disappear."

Skip lunch, ditch the sneakers, and put on your sportcoat, honey, because tonight we're celebrating at the Dal Rae supper club in Pico Rivera.

It's the home of the best relish tray in North America and is one of the last bastions of tableside dining, where the maitre d' or owner wheels a cart over and makes your Steak Diane, Caesar Salad or Cherries Jubilee in front of you.

The Dal Rae is just one of the historic eateries Peter Moruzzi profiles, and Sven Kirsten photographs lovingly, in "Classic Dining: America's Finest Mid-Century Restaurants."

(John Rabe Off Ramp KPCC.org 2012-11-18)

The early-to-mid 20th century saw an explosion of “Continental Fine Dining” restaurants - dark-paneled places with with white tablecloths, where the entrees were named after billionaires, and the desserts were served flaming. Author Peter Moruzzi toured most of America’s remaining examples of these time-machine restos to write his new book “Classic Dining: Discovering Mid-Century Restaurants.” Rico talks with Peter about it over lobster and martinis at LA’s venerable Musso and Frank Grill. (Follow Peter’s map of classic restaurants to a notable eatery near you: http://petermoruzzi.com/classic-dining-map-of-america/)

"The Dinner Party" (www.dinnerpartydownload.com) is a smart, funny public radio show about everything excellent in culture, from the company that brings you "Marketplace." Think NPR meets Vanity Fair. In each episode, hosts Rico Gagliano & Brendan Francis Newnam talk with some of the world's most interesting celebrities, and along the way equip you with bad jokes, fresh drink recipes, hot food finds, odd news items... and etiquette tips from the likes of Henry Rollins and Dick Cavett. Past guests include Michelle Williams, Judd Apatow, Kid Cudi, Sir Richard Branson and others. Wallpaper magazine calls us one of their "40 Reasons To Live In The USA."

(Rico Gagliano "The Dinner Party" American Public Media (NPR) 2012-11-15)

Peter Moruzzi is on a crusade to save fine dining. An admirer of classic, historic restaurants since his youth, Moruzzi, an L.A.-based writer, started to become alarmed in recent years over the ever more rapid disappearance of America's dining history. So he decided to write a book about it.

Classic Dining: Discovering America's Finest Mid-Century Restaurants isn't just a history textbook, but also a living guidebook to the venerable old places that are still around today. "My hope was that a book focusing on the value of classic restaurants might inspire people to locate and frequent those survivors in their areas," Moruzzi says. "It was also to debunk the notion that white tablecloth establishments were deserving of extinction in favor of trendy restaurants with their hard surfaces and minimalist interiors."

Recently we sat down in a cushy vinyl booth with Moruzzi to learn more about his project.

Squid Ink: People who don't have an appreciation for these restaurants might not want to go, either because they think the food is going to be heavy or old fashioned. What would you say to get them to give some of these classic places a try?

Peter Moruzzi: I think people should go just so they can experience what dining was like in America before they were born. It's part of appreciating American history. If people have no interest in how their parents lived or how their parents ate, they're not going to go. But if they do, this gives them an opportunity to truly experience something that is part of our culinary past.

And yes, some of the food is rich and definitely not cutting edge, and the menu is old fashioned, but to me that's part of the excitement of going to places you are unfamiliar with and you want to experience. I like to go to cutting edge restaurants for the same reason. There's plenty of room for the traditional, old-style restaurants and the new. If people are just pigeonholed into eating at upscale or trendy restaurants, I think they're missing a lot. But that's my belief about life. That's why I seek out authenticity in architecture, authenticity in culture, and food in restaurants. It's all the same type of thinking.

SI: Historically, over time, would you say, though, that's it's kind of a good thing that food has generally trended healthier and lighter than it was at that time?

PI: I don't care about contemporary trends. I just don't. Yes, I think it's great that food has changed over time, and people are eating more home grown stuff. But that's not what I'm interested in. If I had my choice, I would eat every single meal at a traditional restaurant.

SI: But you said you like to go to a few newer places too!

PM:That's, right, I do, actually. In Silver Lake, I like Blair's, and I like Barbrix, and I like Forage. And I love Korean food. But the only one I go to is the one that has a charcoal grill in the middle of the table -- I don't like gas. Soot Bull Jeep, on 8th in Koreatown, near the old Ambassador. But there, there's a link to traditional restaurants -- the charcoal grill.

SI: Why do some of these places endure, while other places become tired and people lose interest?

PM: That's a really complicated question. There's a lot of reasons. It sometimes has to do with management -- it's either good or not so good. Quality falters, and people stop going there. The ones that survive are generally the ones that have superb service, a great menu -- and everything has been maintained. Often, the original owners just get tired, or move on, or die, and there's no one else to take over. Once those people go, then the restaurants often go too. Or they try to sell it but the person who buys it doesn't really have the same level of ability.

SI: Which of your favorite classic places in L.A. have the best something? The best waitress, the best bartender, like that?

PM: The best tableside prep is at the Dal Rae. The best lounge is The Dresden. The best traditional steakhouse would be Taylor's. The best theatrical presentation would be Lawry's. The most Hollywood would be Musso & Frank. Everybody on earth went there -- it's sort of the essence of Hollywood. Then Taix -- Taix is Taix. It's kind of quirky and fun and they've got a great bar. The French theme is not one that has survived anywhere else.

SI: At the Tam O'Shanter, I enjoyed the theme, the waitstaff, but the food was ... not great. In researching this book, do you feel like you've eaten a lot of great food?

PM: Some are better than others. Some you go to just for the atmosphere and the character. Others you're lucky to have that plus really good food. The Dal Rae is the best example of that. It's amazing there -- best Caesar salad I've ever had. Taylor's is a typical steakhouse -- I wouldn't say it's better than anywhere else. People go to Musso for different reasons -- I don't think they go there for the food per se -- they may go there for the atmosphere, for the history, for the cocktails. I don't generally rate these places based on quality of food. In fact, I don't ever rate them based on quality of food. It's the whole package. But if the food was realy awful, they probably wouldn't be in business anymore.

SI: So if you were condemed and had to pick a last meal, where would you go?

PM: Dal Rae, or Galatoire's in New Orleans. A completely different dining experience. It's old, it's in New Orleans. Incredible food, incredible atmosphere, the waiters have been there a hundred years, a great location, you have to wear a jacket, and if you don't they give you one. I've never been to a restaurant where the customers actually know each other, and they have their own waiters that they ask for by name.

SI: Do those customers tend to skew older?

PM: No, it's interesting, it's multigenerational. It's been around so long, every generation brings their kids, the whole family. Antoine's is like that as well. New Orleans is its own world. It's completely different than any place I've ever been, and the food on average, the quality is so high. They have to have their quality high, or they will go out of business. People in New Orleans demand it.

SI: Who has the better restaurants, the West Coast or the East?

PM: You can't compare New Orleans to Los Angeles, or San Francisco to New York. In terms of steakhouses, probably New York has better ones overall. The West Coast is definitely better at doing themed restaurants -- there are far more themed restaurants in California than other parts of the country.

SI: What do you think, 40 or 50 years from now, which trends that we have now do you think will be preserved or will stand out to people in the future?

PM: I have no idea. The same question has been asked in architecture, because I'm an architectural historian. They say, "What kind of architecture that's being created now will stand the test of time?" I have no bloody idea. There's stuff that's fairly obvious -- Disney Hall, of course, or you could say some of the buildings at LACMA. But I have no idea what's going to stand the test of time a few years from now. I mean, people in the '50s and '60s, as far as I know, would have never said that Googie coffee shops would have stood the test of time and that they represent an era. Then, they were functional. It drew people's attention, and they would stop. But at the time, people didn't recognize it.

SI: When you go to a contemporary restaurant, do you ever get the feeling that something is missing that restaurateurs could gain by hanging on to?

PM: Yes -- tableside preparation. I think that if restaurants brought that back, people would really enjoy it. I think there's ways you could do contemporary cooking with tableside, if you're clever. And I really like tablecloths and vinyl booths. I don't like these hard chairs and hard surfaces and noisy rooms. I think they should go back to darker interiors, more mood lighting, booths, and white tablecloths.

SI: Yeah -- noisy is kind of trendy, isn't it?

PM: I guess. You can't even have a conversation in some places. The thing about classic restaurants is that they specifically were acoustically tuned so you could hear somebody at the end of a table that had six or eight people at it. Like The Dresden -- it has cork everywhere. they sort though all that noise. You could talk, and you could take a lot more time eating in these classic restaurants. You didn't' just come in and out. And there were a lot more courses, too. People would have dessert, they would have cognac, and they'd have coffee. It's a different way of dining.

From the Back Cover

Over time, the softly lit wood-paneled interiors, starched tablecloths, curved booths, tuxedoed captains, and tableside service that once defined classic continental-style fine dining have gradually disappeared. Equally, the number of historic restaurants filled with character and oldschool ambiance dwindle with each passing year. Yet vestiges cling to life in cities large and small. Through vivid new photography and vintage material,Classic Dining celebrates the great mid-century restaurants that continue to thrive in New York, Miami, New Orleans, Las Vegas, the Chicago area, Los Angeles, and across America. Includes a current directory of over 200 classic restaurants in cities from all 50 states.

Moruzzi Does it Again!
By M. Thakery
Wow... Another fabulously descriptive, beautifully assembled work from Peter Moruzzi!

I've only had a few short hours to enjoy it so far, but what I've seen has captured the essence of what I recall from my youth as the 'fine dining' that took my family all over The city. I can still remember my Grandfather taking the family to Cattlemen's, or Junior's, or the restaurant at the Skirvin Plaza. The is in the days when men wore suits to eat out, and your food was brought to you for inspection before the chef ever began preparation.

From the diagram of the setup of a Table-side Caesar Salad cart (you can almost hear the wooden salad tongs scraping the inside of the pressed wooded bowl!) to the homage to Tiki with and entire chapter on the Mai-Kai, one of the most famous restaurants in the United States, it is so easy to get a sense of what many of the now long-gone American dining experiences must have been like.

While I've been a great fan of Peter's since "Havana Before Castro...", I have to give a hearty congratulations to his partner in this newest endeavor, Photographer Sven A. Kirsten. It's clear that Mr. Kirsten is passionate for his craft - many of the images that he provides in the book are nothing less than individual works of art...

All in all I see this book as less of a guide to classic dining, and more of a challenge for the reader to experience as many of these windows on the past as they can. This feeling is compounded and confirmed upon getting to the end of the book and finding the ten-page "Directory of Classic American Restaurants" - That, or Peter is just trying to make me fat...

Thanks guys - I love this book...

Classic dining; Classic reading
By Charlie C. Rose
If you enjoy all things Mid-Century Modern, this book is a must have. All about the looks and feels of a dining era that is virtually gone from our bland society. Top restaurants reviewed from a time when service AND the customer mattered much more. Enjoy the trek down memory lane and visit the locations that still exist. Sven Kirsten also contributed and he knows urban archaeology like no other. The author is thorough and obviously follows his bliss when writing about the subject for which he holds a great passion.

The little town, Hollister, wasn't much bigger than Medicine Ridge, Montana, where John Callister and his brother Gil had a huge ranch. But they'd decided that it wasn't wise to confine their whole livelihood to one area. They needed to branch out a little, maybe try something different. On the main ranch, they ran a purebred bull and breeding operation with state-of-the-art science. John and Gil had decided to try something new here in Hollister, Montana; a ranch which would deal specifically in young purebred sale bulls, using the latest technology to breed for specific traits like low calving weight, lean conformation, and high weight gain ratio, among others. In addition, they were going to try new growth programs that combined specific organic grasses with mixed protein and grains to improve their production.

In the depressed economy, tailor-made beef cattle would cater to the discerning organic beef consumer. Gil and John didn't run beef cattle, but their champion bulls were bred to appeal to ranchers who did. It was a highly competitive field, especially with production costs going sky-high. Cattlemen could no longer depend on random breeding programs left up to nature. These days, progeny resulted from tailored genetics. It was a high-tech sort of agriculture. Gil and John had pioneered some of the newer computer-based programs that yielded high on profits coupled with less wasteful producer strategies.

For example, Gil had heard about a program that used methane gas from cattle waste to produce energy to run ranch equipment. The initial expense for the hardware had been high, but it was already producing results. Much of the electricity used to light the barns and power the ranch equipment was due to the new technology. Any surplus energy could be sold back to the electric company. The brothers had also installed solar panels to heat water in the main house and run hydraulic equipment in the breeding barn and the stockyard. One of the larger agricultural magazines had featured an article about their latest innovations. Gil's photo, and that of his daughters and his new wife, had graced the pages of the trade publication. John had been at a cattle show and missed the photo shoot. He didn't mind. He'd never been one to court publicity. Nor was Gil. But they wouldn't miss a chance to advertise their genetically superior cattle.

John usually traveled to show the cattle. But he was getting tired of spending his life on the road. Now that Gil had married Kasie, the brothers' former assistant, and the small girls from Gil's first marriage, Bess and Jenny, were in school, John was feeling lonelier than ever, and more restless. Not that he'd had a yen for Kasie, but Gil's remarriage made him aware of the passing of time. He wasn't getting any younger; he was in his thirties. The traveling was beginning to wear on him. Although he dated infrequently, he'd never found a woman he wanted to keep. He was also feeling like a fifth wheel at the family ranch.

So he'd volunteered to come up to Hollister to rebuild this small, dilapidated cattle ranch that he and Gil had purchased and see if an injection of capital and new blood stock and high-tech innovation could bring it from bankruptcy to a higher status in the world of purebred cattle.

The house, which John had only seen from aerial photos, was a wreck. No maintenance had been done on it for years by its elderly owner. He'd had to let most of his full-time cowboys go when the market fell, and he wasn't able to keep up with the demands of the job with the part-timers he retained. Fences got broken, cattle escaped, the well went dry, the barn burned down and, finally, the owner decided to cut his losses. He'd offered the ranch for sale, as-is, and the Callister brothers had bought it from him. The old man had gone back East to live with a daughter.

Now John had a firsthand look at the monumental task facing him. He'd have to hire new cowboys, build a barn as well as a stable, spend a few thousand making the house livable, sink a well, restring the fences, buy equipment, set up the methane-based power production plant.. He groaned at the thought of it. The ranch in Medicine Ridge was state-of-the-art. This was medieval, by comparison. It was going to take longer than a month or two. This was a job that would take many months. And all that work had to be done before any cattle could be brought onto the place. What had seemed like a pleasant hobby in the beginning now looked like it would become a career.

There were two horses in a corral with a lean-to for protection from the weather, all that remained of the old man's Appaloosas. The remuda, or string of working ranch horses, had been sold off long ago. The remaining part-time cowboys told John that they'd brought their own mounts with them to work, while there was still a herd of cattle on the place. But the old man had sold off all his stock and let the part-timers go before he sold the ranch. Lucky, John thought, that he'd been able to track them down and offer them full-time jobs again. They were eager for the work. The men all lived within a radius of a few miles. If John had to wait on replacing the ranch's horses, the men could bring their own to work temporarily while John restocked the place.

He planned to rebuild and restock quickly. Something would have to be done about a barn. A place for newborn calves and sick cattle was his first priority. That, and the house. He was sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag, heating water on a camp stove for shaving and bathing in the creek. Thank God, he thought, that it was spring and not winter. Food was purchased in the town's only cafe, where he had two meals a day. He ate sandwiches for lunch, purchased from a cooler in the convenience store/gas station at the edge of town. It was rough living for a man who was used to five-star hotels and the best food money could buy. But it was his choice, he reminded himself.

He drove into town in a mid-level priced pickup truck. No use advertising that he was wealthy. Prices would skyrocket, since he wasn't on friendly terms with anyone here. He'd only met the cowboys. The people in town didn't even know his name yet.

The obvious place to start, he reasoned, was the feed store. It sold ranch supplies including tack. The owner might know where he could find a reputable builder.

He pulled up at the front door and strode in. The place was dusty and not well-kept. There seemed to be only one employee, a slight girl with short, wavy dark hair and a pert figure, wearing a knit pullover with worn jeans and boots.

She was sorting bridles but she looked up when he approached. Like many old-time cowboys, he was sporting boots with spurs that jingled when he walked. He was also wearing an old Colt .45 in a holster slung low on his hip under the open denim shirt he was wearing with jeans and a black T-shirt. It was wild country, this part of Montana, and he wasn't going out on the range without some way of protecting himself from potential predators.

The girl stared at him in an odd, fixed way. He didn't realize that he had the looks that would have been expected in a motion picture star. His blond hair, under the wide-brimmed cowboy hat, had a sheen like gold, and his handsome face was very attractive. He had the tall, elegant body of a rider, lean and fit and muscular without exaggerated lines.

"What the hell are you doing?" came a gruff, angry voice from the back. "I told you to go bring in those new sacks of feed before the rain ruins them, not play with the tack! Get your lazy butt moving, girl!"

The girl flushed, looking frightened. "Yes, sir," she said at once, and jumped up to do what he'd told her to.

John didn't like the way the man spoke to her. She was very young, probably still in her teens. No man should speak that way to a child.

He approached the man with a deadpan expression, only his blue eyes sparkling with temper.

The man, overweight and half-bald, older than John, turned as he approached. "Something I can do for you?" he asked in a bored tone, as if he didn't care whether he got the business or not.

"You the owner?" John asked him.

The man glared. "The manager. Tarleton. Bill Tarleton."

John tilted his hat back. "I need to find someone who can build a barn."

The manager's eyebrows arched. His eyes slid over John's worn jeans and boots and inexpensive clothing. He laughed. His expression was an insult. "You own a ranch around here?" he asked in disbelief.

John fought back his temper. "My boss does," he said, in an impulsive moment. "He's hiring. He just bought the Bradbury place out on Chambers Road."

"That old place?" Tarleton made a face. "Hell, it's a wreck! Bradbury just sat on his butt and let the place go to hell. Nobody understood why. He had some good cattle years ago, cattlemen came from as far away as Oklahoma and Kansas to buy his stock."

"He got old," John said.

"I guess. A barn, you say." He pursed his lips. "Well, Jackson Hewett has a construction business. He builds houses. Fancy houses, some of them. I reckon he could build a barn. He lives just outside town, over by the old train station. He's in the local telephone directory."

"I'm obliged," John said.

"Your boss…he'll be needing feed and tack, I guess?" Tarleton added. John nodded.

"If I don't have it on hand, I can order it."

"I'll keep that in mind. I need something right now, though—a good tool kit."

"Sassy!" he yelled. "The man wants a tool kit! Bring one of the boxes from that new line we started stocking!"

"Yes, sir!" There was the sound of scrambling boots.

"She ain't much help," the manager grumbled. "Misses work sometimes. Got a mother with cancer and a little sister, six, that the mother adopted. I guess she'll end up alone, just her and the kid."

"Does the mother get government help?" John asked, curious.

"Not much," Tarleton scoffed. "They say she never did much except sit with sick folk, even before she got the cancer. Sassy's bringing in the only money they got. The old man took off years ago with another woman. Just left. At least they got a house. Ain't much of one, but it's a roof over their heads. The mother got it in the divorce settlement."

John felt a pang when he noticed the girl tugging a heavy toolbox. She looked as if she was barely able to lift a bridle.

"Here, I'll take that," John said, trying to sound nonchalant. He took it from her hands and set it on the counter, popping it open. His eyebrows lifted as he examined the tools. "Nice."

"Expensive, too, but it's worth it," Tarleton told him.

"Boss wants to set up an account in his own name, but I'll pay cash for this," John said, pulling out his wallet. "He gave me pocket money for essentials."

Tarleton's eyes got bigger as John started peeling off twenty-dollar bills. "Okay. What name do I put on the account?"

"Callister," John told him without batting an eyelash. "Gil Callister."

"Hey, I've heard of him," Tartleton said at once, giving John a bad moment. "He's got a huge ranch down in Medicine Ridge."

"That's the one," John said. "Ever seen him?"

"Who, me?" The older man laughed. "I don't run in those circles, no, sir. We're just country folk here, not millionaires."

John felt a little less worried. It would be to his advantage if the locals didn't know who he really was. Not yet, anyway. Since he was having to give up cattle shows for the foreseeable future, there wasn't much chance that his face would be gracing any trade papers. It might be nice, he pondered, to be accepted as an ordinary man for once. His wealth seemed to draw opportunists, especially feminine ones. He could enjoy playing the part of a cowboy for a change.

"No problem with opening an account here, then, if we put some money down first as a credit?" John asked.

"No problem at all." Tarleton grinned. "I'll start that account right now. You tell Mr. Callister anything he needs, I can get for him!"

"I'll tell him."

"And your name…?" the manager asked.

"John," he replied. "John Taggert."

Taggert was his middle name. His maternal grandfather, a pioneer in South Dakota, had that name.

"Taggert." The manager shook his head. "Never heard that one."

John smiled. "It's not famous."

The girl was still standing beside the counter. John handed her the bills to pay for the toolbox. She worked the cash register and counted out his change.

"Thanks," John said, smiling at her.

She smiled back at him, shyly. Her green eyes were warm and soft. "You're welcome."

"Get back to work," Tarleton told her.

"Yes, sir." She turned and went back to the bags on the loading platform.

John frowned. "Isn't she too slight to be hefting bags that size?"

"It goes with the job," Tarleton said defensively. "I had a strong teenage boy working for me, but his parents moved to Billings and he had to go along. She was all I could get. She swore she could do the job. So I'm letting her."

"I guess she's stronger than she looks," John remarked, but he didn't like it.

Tarleton nodded absently. He was putting Gil Cal-lister's name in his ledger.

"I'll be back," John told him as he picked up the toolbox.

Tarleton nodded again.

John glanced at the girl, who was straining over a heavy bag, and walked out of the store with a scowl on his face.

He paused. He didn't know why. He glanced back into the store and saw the manager standing on the loading platform, watching the girl lift the feed sacks. It wasn't the look a manager should be giving an employee. John's eyes narrowed. He was going to do something about that.

One of the older cowboys, Chad Dean by name, was waiting for him at the house when he brought in the toolbox.

"Say, that's a nice one," he told the other man. "Your boss must be stinking rich."

"He is," John mused. "Pays good, too."

Two Romances Where the Heroes Are Not Exactly Who They Seem....
By terrylynn
Diamond in the Rough by Diana Palmer and Falling for Mr. Dark and Dangerous by Donna Alward, are two contemporary romances presented in one book with appealing lead characters with a little action thrown in to keep things lively.

Diamond in the Rough... John Callister is a very wealthy, handsome rancher who even after all his success, feels like there is something missing from his life. So he sets out to turn a run down ranch in sleepy little Hollister, Montana into a workable, profitable business and he is determined to do it without the benefit of his famous name. So it's John Taggert who walks into the local feed store and notices a young woman being harassed by her employer and decides he's seen enough to know that some changes need to be made. All Sassy Peale knows is that a tall, handsome cowboy who says he is the foreman on a nearby dilapidated ranch, has her heart racing from the first moment she lays eyes on him. Sassy is a slim, sweet girl with a heart of gold and a world of worry on her shoulders since she is the sole support for her ailing mother and little sister. All John knows for sure is that she's poor as a church mouse and makes him feel like he never has before. As love grows between the two, John knows he needs to tell Sassy who he really is, but can he take the chance that when he does, everything between them will change? This is a damsel in distress rescued by a handsome prince (cowboy) story if ever there was one and sometimes it's nice when wonderful things happen to people who deserve it.

Falling for Mr. Dark and Dangerous... Maggie is a widow who runs a bed and breakfast and has a teenage daughter who inadvertently makes a reservation for US Marshall Nate Griffith to come and stay for several weeks right when she has finally decided to go on a much needed vacation. But the minute the tall, handsome but mysterious lawman shows up at her door, suddenly Maggie is not so upset about her missed vacation. But even as her attraction for Nate grows, Maggie refuses to make herself vulnerable to any man again after the pain of losing her husband. Plus Nate is not quite what he seems to be and when he shows up one day with blood running down his face, Maggie realizes she has come to care too much and nothing Nate can say or do will make her take a second chance on love. But fate and Nate's job conspire to make her wonder if living a life in fear of love makes her future so much less than it could be if she could just accept that a love like this is worth any risk.

These are two classic, but simple love stories about two men who are not exactly what they first appear to be and the two women in their lives that have to decide to take a chance on the idea of true love, no matter how unlikely it may first seem. An enjoyable, uncomplicated read that will leave you with a smile on your face as four deserving people find love.

I didn't like that it was 2 short stories. it should tell you that before a person buys it. I don't buy short stories.

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
By Phyllis
What I like about Ms. Palmer' s books is that her characters, problems, and situations are real. Her endings are great. Mostly there is actual love scenes without active sex and and embarrassing verbal descriptions. It is refreshing. Thanks. Phyllis
