Making the Arcane Observable

David Soll has researched and entertainingly written about the labyrinthine history of a topic that for nearly all New Yorkers is out of sight (and mind), buried underground -- but in reality is vitally important to them every day: their water supply. He has taken what at first blush is an arcane topic, and by following its evolution, elevated it to its rightful status as a significant achievement.

A book with serious problems

There are some extremely serious problems with this book.

1. Soll's thoroughgoing animus against New York City can be grating, but he is at no pains to conceal it, so the reader can control for it. However, that bias leads him to an oversight that beggars credulity. He's really quite clear on the point that New York City should have been compelled to draw water from the Hudson River rather than to tap the Delaware. He does not mention, much less address, the compelling fact that General Electric, from two facilities north of Albany, dumped an horrendous amount of highly carcinogenic PCBs into the Hudson from 1947 to 1977 and that this mess hasn't been cleaned up even today. This is one of the longest running, best known environmental horror stories in American environmental history. It suggests conclusively that the New York City planners were absolutely correct to look to the Delaware watershed for water, because it was unattractive to that sort of heavy industry. Soll's purportedly cool eyed, even handed "analysis" of New York City's water supply alternatives is given the lie by this unavoidable bit of history.
2. Lack of an adequate literature review is also a problem with the book. A shaking hands acquaintance with McPhee's The Pine Barrens, with its account of New York City's pursuit of the water in New Jersey's Pine Barrens, undercuts Soll's repeated contention that New York City's pursuit of a pure, high quality, unfiltered supply was really just a bully boy city's effort to impose itself on defenseless Catskill farmers. Amazingly, he does cover New York City's investigation of one Connecticut source but he fails to mention how unlikely that possibility ever was based on Connecticut's own paucity of water supply sources. Had he looked even briefly at Bruce Ackerman's magisterial study of water policy along the Delaware River, The Uncertain Search For Environmental Quality, Soll might perhaps have thought better of covering the role of the Delaware River Basin Commission respecting the New York City water supply in more than three pages of his book, particularly since the Commission issues withdrawal permits for water supplies in areas of the Delaware watershed where water is scarce and as well since the Commission was the sole effective governmental voice raised against fracking that can and probably would negatively affect the New York City water supply. Finally, when an author writes a book such as this, his literature survey is a verification that he has mastered the literature in the field he purports to cover and also to provide the reader with access to those same works. Leaving out Ackerman and McPhee is an unforgivable oversight, but snubbing John Burroughs even less explicable.
3. His "summary" of fracking in the watershed - that it has somehow been effectively eliminated by the requirement of some sort of pre drilling, environmental impact analysis - is not merely flippant, but irresponsible and childishly callow. One wonders if this treatment was deemed necessary in order that the consultative negotiation process that led to the 1997 peace treaty among the various stakeholders (which Soll hails as a groundbreaking cure all for multiparty environmental disputes) failed abysmally in the area of fracking.
4. Soll's intermittent swipes at the social policies of the Progressive era are irritating, misplaced and ill premised. For example, he charges that the eminent domain process created by the New York Assembly for Catskill condemnations needed to build the big Delaware reservoirs - which required payment of the assessed value of the property to the owner before it was taken - was somehow unfair and that this imagined unfairness was somehow a function of Progressive thinking of the time. This is pure ipse dixit; wishing doesn't make it so. It is also very bad historiography.
I find it astonishing that the three jacket experts are able to offer such fulsome praise of the book given its detailed shortcomings. Likewise, I can only wonder at the quality of the Cornell University Press editing function. There is much in this book that is useful, helpful information, although most of the early history can be gleaned (in more gracefully written form) from McPhee and Ackerman. The remainder of the book, sadly, suffers profoundly from the deficiencies I have noted.

Water: Too important to be boring

As a New Yorker who has boasted for years about what wonderful water we have, and how much foresight the City's leaders have had to provide us with this great resource, I was disappointed that there was not more depth and detail to Mr. Soll's book. It could have been a story about the tensions between the builders and conservationists, the country folk who had their way of life disrupted so that the City folk could have abundant, inexpensive water and waste. Instead of delving into these subjects, Mr. Soll has published a précis to the story that needs to be told. While a Robert Caro and his skill at telling the story of urban life comes along only once in many, many years, I had hoped to learn more about New York's wonderful water than I have from Mr. Soll.

Buyer Beware!

I owned a copy of the first edition of this book but since this new edition was advertised to contain new interviews of Frank Gifford, Art Donovan and Ray Perkins(???), and since I like to read anything connected with this great game, I bought it. I was dismayed to find it contained no new material other than the "where are they now" segments attached to each of the interviews from the first edition. The book is 258 pages long, not 288 as advertised. The "where are they now" material can be interesting (Sam Huff's continued rancor against Allie Sherman for the 1964 trade makes for great reading). However, potential customers should be aware that this edition is not as advertised

The Game of their Lives: The 1958 NFL Championship by Klein.

I have purchased this book as of today, three times. I have read it cover to cover a number of times, and loaned it to friends and family. The anecdotes are well written. The interviews really seem to come alive. If you are Giants or Colts fan, or just a golden age NFL fan, this book is a must have. Of all of the books on classic NFL, this one is among my favorites. I'm sure I'll purchse this book again.

This book starts off with a serious bang. I was partway into the second chapter when I turned to my husband and told him about how stunned I was by how much action and emotion had already occurred in this story. It does slow down a bit after that, but honestly, not by much. This is a book about racing and I know that for me, my emotions and heart-rate were racing throughout most of the book. It's a great book and definitely one that I enjoyed.

Tracey has had a hard time of it...pretty much her whole life has been a series of really bad events. She grew up in the foster system after her adoptive parents died when she was 2 years old. She found her place and acceptance at the racetrack with her friends Eddie and Matthew. Four years ago (at the age of 19,) it seemed like things were finally going her way when someone threw a water balloon filled with oil in front of her race car on the track which caused a horrific crash. It has taken her 4 years to recover and come back from that. It seems things are finally back on track for her when her crew chief and father figure, Joe, suddenly dies at the track. Suddenly, Tracey's life is thrown into chaos especially when they find out that Joe was murdered. Someone is stalking Tracey.

When Mac comes on the scene, he is stepping into a really difficult situation. It's a last-minute change and he doesn't know Tracey or the team. Mac and Tracey clash at every turn about every single thing. She's already on edge with Joe's death. Their conflict is not making anything any easier, but Tracey is not a back-down kind of gal. She's tough and in your face when she doesn't agree. Honestly, Mac is completely confused about how to handle her, but as things heat up with her stalker, so do the feelings between her and Mac. Their chemistry soon becomes combustible.

This is a romantic suspense and the suspense and tension builds all the way through the book. There was a single point, about 2/3 of the way in, when I had a moment where I felt like the conflict between Mac & Tracey became too much, but it didn't last long before I got carried away within the story again. The action sequences in this are fabulous...both the suspense-driven ones AND the romance-driven ones!

There is a secondary story which I loved just as much as the primary between Matthew (Tracey's childhood friend and pit crew member) and Chelsea (Tracey's long lost twin sister.) I loved the way that Dee wrote the story so that you were never quite sure where Chelsea stood as far as the suspense line...I definitely kept second-guessing her motives and the clues that the author provided.

Overall, this was just a great read. I am, admittedly, a race fan, so I loved that aspect of the story, but I think that just about anyone would enjoy this book for the romance and the suspense. I don't think that you need to have an affinity for the sport to be able to appreciate this book. If you like the Erin McCarthy Fast Track series, you DEFINITELY need to try out these books by Dee Adams!!

Lacklaster protagonist, weak story, fluffy narrator

The protagonist had no credibility. The book starts as a female race car driver--supposedly intent, dedicated and determined to succeed from a young age--is tearing around turns at over 200 miles an hour, setting track records. While she should be listening to her engine and her transmission, bracing from the force on the turns, figuring out how to take the next turn even faster, her heart pounding at her dangerous maneuvers, instead our airhead protagonist is laid back, thinking about her life, her boyfriend, joking amiably over her headphone. I don't THINK so! A race car driver is an athlete. A professional. This is the most important thing she has ever done in her life, for God's sake. (Not to mention that the author wastes her chance to get our hearts pounding.) And, our protag also has time, during her record-setting maneuvers, to look up at the stands and observe what is going on. PUH-LEASE!

The narrator made the whole thing even worse with her "tee-hee-hee" voice. She used a high-pitched girly narration to comment on the feel of the track and the turns, for example---sounding more like she was oohing over her latest nail polish than an athlete commenting on conditions.

Despite the initial nearly fatal attack on our protag, when the lady next takes the track, no one even seems to pay any attention to the possibility that she may be being targeted so no one pays any attention to the fact that her pills went missing and are suddenly found mysteriously. No. Everyone ignores this. Although our protag has already taken pills from a different bottle (and so ignores the newly recovered pills), her mentor takes them. GUESS WHAT HAPPENS FOLKS!! You got it in one.

I didn't get a whole lot further. The whole thing was just too dumb, dumb, dumb.

A voice to watch, but not my favorite book

Dangerous Race had all the makings of a wicked novel. Fast Cars, Interesting premise, but it fell flat for me. Dee J. Adams is an up and coming author to watch for sure.

The main hero and heroine, Mac and Trace just never clicked. Some of it had to do with their respective ages and maturity levels, Trace being a hot-shot 23 year old Race Driver and Mac being a 35 year old Former race car driver who has been living abroad for the past ten years. They just didn't mesh well.

The other thing that Bothered me, and this is something that doesn't bother most readers,but that I have a hard time with, is that there are TWO story lines and `romances' in this novel. The secondary romance between Chelsea and Matthew overtook Mac and Trace. Their connection was better, their dialogue was better and they had better chemistry. However, I didn't like the "why" of Chelsea, and I thought her and Matthew was a little weird with the whole (view spoiler) But again, it's a personal thing.

The whole Suspense aspect of Dangerous Race was done well, and was compelling. The Villain what a freaking nut job.

I liked Trace's attitude, her iron will and her drive to succeed. I loved her outlook on life, and how she wanted to start a racing school. She was so strong, but yet so vulnerable, and it's an attractive quality I look for in a novel heroine. She had a scorpion tongue and was quick to fire first in order to protect her heart. In short, she had very real flaws and insecurities. She felt like a lesser woman due to her deformities from her car crash at 19.

Mac has demons of his own, and I thought they were kind of...I thought he should have been able to move past what happened to him so long ago, but he hadn't. I thought what he did at the awards ceremony was assholish, and quite frankly I was mad at him for the aftermath. Both Mac and Tracey were using and seducing each other, and I really didn't like how things turned out between them {At this point}

However, I LOVED how Mac made Trace feel beautiful and I love how he took the time to allay her fears and earn her trust back. He was very attentive to her, and didn't hold back.

I would have liked to have seen more of Ed Senior and her crew. These people played an important role in her life, and in her racing career, and we only saw Matthew and Eddie. Who were the rest? What do they do? Since Ed Sr was like father to her, I felt he should have been around more. Just my opinion.

Overall, I liked the novel, but It's not something I would re-read.

This is a precise and masterful translation. Any translator worth his salt tried to render his text into the target language in such a way that it will strike the reader in that language in much the same way as the original strikes the reader in the source language. It is a daunting task indeed, but Professor MacKenzie has carried it off. (David O'Connell)

Faith Influencing Art! He Never Heard Of Such A Thing

Art for art's sake, well Francois Mauriac struggled most of his life with this question and he found the answer. In this collection of two works, the essay God and Mammon certainly illustrates his struggle with the consequences of his works. He and his readers took very seriously what was being said and secondarily how it was said. If today words can hurt, then how much more books can hurt or influence. He would not shy away from the moniker, "a Catholic writer," although he did much to incorporate the struggles of his time with his work.

What is fascinating is that the second part of this volume is the novella "What Was Lost" is his attempt to incorporate his theory with his work. It reminds one of Truffaut, the director/film theorist who began as a film critic and after being criticized by the French critics at the time started making films that would revolutionize cinema (what can one expect from the race that gave us Descartes).

To read this book will take you into the world of modern fiction and writers such as Graham Greene or Flannery Oconnor and what they tried to do. Many writers today are disingenuous in attempting to disassociate their works from their beliefs. I think that Mauriac would feel more comfortable with a writer such as Gore Vidal who you may disagree with what he said but still enjoy the way he said it. It is a pity that Francois Mauriac is so little known today because he does make the serious writer or artist think about "why" he is creating rather than "what."

Pinewood Village, New York

Pinewood. Sadie crowded back into the corner and tugged her bonnet forward as her hired carriage rolled through the village. The news of her return would spread like a brush fire if she was recognized. Sadie Spencer is back. Sadie Spencer is home.

Her stomach quivered. In two weeks it would be four years since the incident. Memories surged. She closed her mind to the bad ones—or tried to. Perhaps returning to Pinewood would exorcise them—and the fear. How she wished she could live without that fear! Please, Almighty God, grant that it might be so. She took a breath to calm her stomach and pulled the small purse dangling from her wrist into her trembling hands.

The driver's polite touch of his hat brim sent her pushing deeper into the corner where she would not be seen by two women standing at the edge of the road waiting to cross. A wagon passed by loaded with baled shingles and traveling in the other direction. She released her pent-up breath and lifted her head.

The horse's hoofs clattered against planks and the carriage lurched as the wheels climbed onto the wood. Stony Creek Bridge. A smile trembled on her lips. How many hours had she, Callie, Willa and Ellen spent in the cool shadow beneath its span trying to best Daniel at skipping stones on the water?

The carriage rocked off the bridge, swaying left onto Brook Street. A snap of the reins urged the horse to greater speed and her smile died. It wouldn't be long now.

Her chest tightened with longing to be back behind the brick walls of the young ladies' seminary in Rochester. She'd not been outside those walls since she'd fled there four years before, and if not for her grandparents' need, she would be in that safe haven still. She would never have willingly returned to Pinewood. Never.

The carriage tilted, slowed as the horse started up the incline outside of the village. She slipped back to the center of the seat and caught her breath at the sight of the forested hills on either side of the dirt road. Only one more turn to make when they reached the top of the hill.

She dug her fingernails into her palms, struggling against a surge of dread. When she'd received Callie's letter, she'd told herself it would be all right, that she would care for Nanna and Poppa in the safety of the Sheffield House, but that was not to be. Her grandparents had left Sophia's hotel and returned home to Butternut Hill.

She had to go back there.

Oh, Lord, give me strength.

"Your grandfolks are in the garden. I'll take these up to your room." The housekeeper picked up her bags and looked at her. "It's good you're home, Miss Sadie."

The underlying sadness in Gertrude's voice constricted her throat, making speech impossible. She nodded, removed her bonnet and walked down the entrance hall and into the dining room. The window framed her grandparents seated on the wooden garden bench, the stockade fence and the wooded path beyond. Love swelled her heart, blocking out the fear. She pushed open the door, ran across the porch and rushed down the steps. "Nanna! Poppa!" Their gray heads turned her direction. They stared. Her feet took wings.

"Sadie!"

She leaned down and hugged her grandmother, reveling in the feel of the soft arms holding her close, the small pudgy hands patting her, offering comfort as she sobbed out the long years of loneliness against the shoulder that had so often been washed by her tears as a child.

"Oh, Sadie… Sadie… Sadie…" Her grandmother patted her back, her shoulder, touched her cheek, smoothed her hair. "Hush, sweeting, hush. It's all right. Everything is all right."

Tears and laughter bubbled into her throat at the old-fashioned, familiar endearment. It was all right. Her grandmother knew her. After reading Callie's and Willa's letters, she'd been so afraid…. She straightened and wiped the tears from her face. "Oh, Nanna, I have missed you so."

She kissed her grandmother's soft, moist cheek and turned toward the silent man staring at her from the bench. "And you, Poppa." She kissed his cheek at the edge of his gray beard, felt his arm slip around her in a hard hug. One arm.

"Wel…come…home, Sa…die."

The words were hesitant, slightly slurred. Tears clogged her throat again. She sank to her knees in front of her grandfather and took hold of his hands. His left hand gripped back; the right moved slightly, stilled. Her chest tightened. "I made arrangements to come home as soon as I heard of your illness, Poppa." Remorse flowed on a torrent of tears. She laid her cheek against their clasped hands. "I'm so sorry I was not with you when you needed me."

"Daniel should have brought you home."

Daniel? She jerked up her head.

Her grandmother huffed and patted her shoulder. "What's more, he shouldn't have taken you off prowling through the woods in the first place. I worry when you go off with your friends, Sadie."

Her heart twisted at the absent look in her grandmother's eyes. Her grandfather's hand squeezed hers. She glanced at him, read the message of protective concern in his eyes and gave a slight nod. "I'm sorry, Nanna." She rose and brushed the dust from her skirt to gain a moment to control the sorrow flooding her heart. Callie and Willa were right—her grandmother was ill in her mind. "I won't go off again."

Boots thudded on the hard-beaten path behind her—the path that trailed through the woods to her grandfather's sawmill. Her heart stopped, her lungs seized at the remembered sound. She whirled, stared at the tall, broad-shouldered man dressed in logger garb who stepped from the shadows under the trees and strode toward her, just like before. The early evening light receded, the earth swayed.

The man rushed forward, reached for her.

"Put her there on the settee! I'll fetch water."

Cole frowned and watched Rachel Townsend hurrying toward the kitchen. Would she return, or forget what she was doing? He looked down at the slender young woman draped across his arms, and his breath shortened. He had no doubt things would change now that she'd returned. And not for the better. Not for him.

He leaned down, laid Sadie Spencer on the settee, lifted her limp arm and placed it across her body.

A small, breathy moan escaped her. Her eyelids fluttered then stilled, the long lashes forming dark smudges against her pale skin. He glanced at the small pearl buttons fastening the high collar of her brown dress and his fingers twitched to undo them to make it easier for her to breathe, but given the past, that action could be misconstrued. He stood frozen, staring at the fine-boned, patrician features of the woman his brother had attacked. She looked so.. fragile. And the terror in her eyes when she'd turned and seen him.

The brutal savagery of Payne's deed struck him anew. He sucked in air, clenched his hands at his sides. He'd spent the past four years working to live down the shame of Payne's act, to prove that he himself was decent and honorable, and the people of Pinewood were finally beginning to trust and befriend him. And now Sadie Spencer had come home.

He gazed down at Manning Townsend's granddaughter lying so still and pale against the blue silk of the settee. Odd that such a beautiful young woman would be dangerous for him, but Sadie Spencer could undo all of his hard work simply by her return. Her presence in Pinewood was bound to stir people's memories, to bring back the anger and distrust that had faced him when he'd come to Pinewood to find Payne and tell him of their parents' deaths.

He stiffened, breathed hard against the pressure in his chest and rubbed the tense muscles in the back of his neck. He hadn't suspected the violence and depravity that ran in his brother's veins until that day—had been sickened when he'd learned what Payne had done. Now, his brother's actions seemed more real. And if seeing Sadie Spencer made him feel that way.

He huffed out a breath and pushed away the memory of the terror in her eyes when she saw him. Sorry as he was for her, he couldn't let her destroy all the goodwill he had so painstakingly cultivated and ruin the new life and business he'd built here. He'd have to convince her—

"What are you doing? Get away from my granddaughter!"

He jerked his head around. Rachel Townsend stood in the doorway, a scowl in the place of her normal pleasant expression, her hands gripping a wet cloth.

"I said get away from my granddaughter!" She rushed toward him, her lips pressed into a tight line, her small, free hand waving through the air.

Was her anger because of the confusion that was occurring more often? Or was her reaction to his being there beside her granddaughter nothing to do with her slipping grasp on the present? Was the condemnation toward him for Payne's heinous act already returning?

He clenched his jaw, stepped away from the settee and headed outside to get Manning.

The trembling woke her. Bile pushed at her throat. She'd had the nightmare again. Sadie drew in a slow, deep breath to control the nausea and opened her eyes.

"Feeling better, sweeting?" Her grandmother frowned down at her. "What happened, Sadie? Why did you swoon like that? Are you ill?"

She blinked, took another breath. Her head cleared. She was home. "No, Nanna, I'm not ill. It must have been the…excitement of coming home." Something cold slid across her temple. She lifted her hand, removed the wet cloth and pushed to a sitting position, still quivering. The nightmare had never before come while she was awake. It must have been returning to Butternut Hill that—

The sound of boot heels thudding against the wood floor jolted her upright. She turned toward the doorway, stared at her nightmare in the flesh.

"It's…all right, Sa…die."

She glanced at her grandfather being carried in the man's arms, looked back up at that bearded face, shuddered.

"I'm Cole Aylward, not…my brother." He strode across the room toward them.

Payne Aylward's brother? She backed up, bumped against the settee and grasped the high, curved arm.

"Give me the cloth, Sadie. You're getting everything wet."

She looked down at the dripping cloth, eased her grip on it and handed it to her grandmother—bit down on her lower lip to keep from calling her back as she started from the room. "Thank…you."

She darted her gaze back to the man lowering her grandfather into his favored chair, brushed a wet tendril of hair back off her forehead and tried to make some sort of sense of everything. "May I ask what you are doing here, Mr. Aylward?" I should think this home is the last place you would want to be. She pressed her lips together to keep from turning the thought into speech.

"Manning's not yet able to get around by himself. I drop by throughout the day to see if he needs anything."

She stared at his broad shoulders, his powerful arms and hands. "You come every day?" Her voice quavered and she took a breath to steady it, squared her shoulders at his answering nod.

"Then I'm certain you'll be pleased that will no longer be necessary. As I'm here to care for my grandfather now, there'll be no need for us to impinge on your…kindness…further."

Her courage failed when he straightened and turned to face her. She hid her shaking hands in the folds of her long skirt and stiffened her spine.

"And are you going to carry Manning to his bed when it's time for him to retire? And carry him to the table in the morning when he rises? Or out to the garden so he can enjoy the sun and fresh air?"

His tone was conversational, but there was an underlying steeliness in Cole Aylward's voice that caught at her throat and stole her breath. She stared at him, stunned by the questions he so calmly presented—questions that emphasized how ill-prepared she was for the changed situation in her home. She clenched her hidden hands and lifted her chin. "I shall hire someone."

"No! Want.Cole."

"Thank you, Manning." Cole Aylward rested his large hand on her grandfather's shoulder, then fixed his gaze on her. "I appreciate your thoughtfulness of my time, Miss Spencer, but there's no need for you to go to that trouble or expense. Neighbors look out for one another, and—"

"Neighbors?"

"Yes." A frown creased his forehead. "I thought your grandmother or…someone…would have written to tell you I took over Pay—my brother's cabin and have built a shingle mill on the property."

He lived in Payne's cabin? So near… A chill skittered down her spine. Her pulse fluttered. She slipped her hand up to cover the base of her throat.

"Are you all right?" He started toward her.

She jerked back and he froze.

Her grandmother bustled into the room, her long skirts swishing back and forth with the sway of her ample hips, and beamed a smile at them. "Gertrude is ready to serve supper. Please bring Manning to the table, Cole." Her smile widened, deepening the wrinkles in her aged face. "You'll be joining us, of course. I had Gertrude set a place for you. We're having roasted beef and potatoes."

No! Don't invite him! She stared at her grandmother in stunned silence. Had she forgotten what had happened? Her stomach roiled. She pressed her hand against it, drew air into her lungs to protest.

"Not tonight, Mrs. Townsend. Thank you kindly for the invitation, but I don't wish to intrude upon your granddaughter's homecoming. Next time, perhaps."

Next time? So he was going to ignore her wishes.

"I'll just carry Manning in and then come back a bit later to take him in to his bed."

At least he was leaving for now. Good. She would have time to convince her grandfather it would be better to hire someone to help him. Her pulse steadied.

"Nonsense! I'll not hear of it." Her grandmother gave a small, dismissive wave with her pudgy hand. "You're so kind to Father, the least we can do is offer our hospitality in return."

Oh, Nanna, don't—Father? Tears stung her eyes. She bowed her head and stared down at the leaf pattern woven into the blue silk of the settee as her grandmother chatted on about their daughter and her husband also joining them for supper. The tears overflowed. She drew a slow breath and exhaled softly. Her mother and father had died when she was three years old, and her mother had been her grandparents' only child.

"Are you coming, Sadie?"

She lifted her head and curved her lips in the best smile she could summon. "Yes, Nanna, I'm coming. It's been a long time since I've had any of Gertrude's roast beef." She released her grip on the settee and started for the dining room, trying to ignore the despair that gripped her at her grandmother's illness and to smother the unease that filled her at the thought of Cole Aylward sitting at their table sharing their meal.

Full of Drama

The setting for this story is 1841 Pinewood Village New York
Sadie Spencer comes home after four years away. She has to deal with lots of problems right off the bat.

It deals with some issues of blame, forgiveness. memories and illness.
Sadie was attacked four years ago in the woods by her house by Payne Aylward. She still suffers nightmares and does not want to touch any man. Has no plans to
ever marry. The whole community knows about it. Payne was never caught.

Sadie has come home because of news of her grandparents health problems. Sadie was raised by her grandparents when her parents died when she was little.
Her grandmother has memories problems. Sometimes not even recongizes her. Her grandfather Manning had a stroke. (Not sure if they called it that) his one side
is useless.

She finds a stranger in her grandparents house Cole Aylward. Cole comes a lot since Manning can't get around. He also eats with them most days. Cole got to town right after
the attack and even tried to track his brother. He has tried to make up for the trouble his brother caused. He comes carrys Manning from bed to table to different
rooms. (I have dealt with a stroke leaving me so half my body did not work. Never thought how hard that would be without wheelchairs and modern medicines)
Cole even manages the Townsend mill and lumber camp.

Sadie does not want him around since he looks a lot like his brother. She does not trust him. She thinks he must have ulter motives. Like stealing from the mill.

Cole is smart and a hardworker. He has tried to makeup for what Payne did. He wants to know why Payne has changed since he last saw him. He has gone out of his way to
the Townsend family. The town was not very welcomed to him and blamed him too for his brothers fault.

Sadie has some good friends from childhood that have had their own stories told in other books of this series. I would love to read them too.
It is a clean read.

Tender Story about Renewal and Growth

Sadie Spencer has every reason to run whenever Cole Aylward steps into the same room as her. The problem is, Cole is doing a whole lot of stepping into the room because he's helping to care for her ailing grandfather as well as managing her grandfather's business. Cole's brother, Payne, raped Sadie several years earlier (although the word "rape" is never actually mentioned in the story-something I found to be rather odd). Sadie still struggles with the trauma of that event, and having Payne's brother around-a brother who looks a tad too much like her rapist-causes her no end of hardship. Similarly, Cole also feels guilt over his brother's actions and seeks to make the situation as comfortable for Sadie as possible. The romantic obstacles in this story are mainly emotional and derived from the past. While having a brother rape the woman you love is certainly a hindrance to the romance, there weren't a lot of current, physical things standing in the way of Sadie and Cole's relationship.

If you like sweet romance novels where the conflict is mainly emotional, then you should enjoy Falling for the Teacher by Dorothy Clark. It's a decent story, especially for the price and availability. There's not a lot going on besides the romance, but hey, it's a ROMANCE novel, right? So that's kind of to be expected. And though the novel deals with the topic of rape, it does so very carefully and in a manner appropriate for all ages.

A return worth waiting for.

Sadie was forced from her home because of a tragic attack, but not even the horrible memories could keep her away when she finds out about her ailing grandparents. Things aren't made any easier when she meets her attackers brother Cole. She doesn't care how honest or kind he seems she is determined to avoid him. This is a story of love and overcoming ones fears. Sadie must realize Cole is not his brother and so does Cole. He fears being mistrusted because of the deeds of his brother and so wants Sadie to leave. Soon these two learn that fear can be overcome and love is stronger than anything else.

Sadie is a strong and beautiful young woman. She is kind, caring, and hast an inner strength that even Cole can see. I really admired her loyalty to her family and how she took care of them even when times got hard. I also liked to see how she grew throughout the story.

Cole is a honorable man, but because of the deeds of his brother he has been trying to prove his honesty to the town and everyone else. I liked his character and had fun getting to know him. He is a nice guy and I enjoyed seeing him slowly fall in love with Sadie.

The romance was sweet and nicely paced. Sadie and Cole had a nice relationship that was built on trust and friendship.

For a sweet and tender romance with memorable characters check out "Falling for the Teacher".

About the Author
Irwin Shaw (1913–1984) was an acclaimed, award-winning author who grew up in New York City and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1934. His first play, Bury the Dead (1936), has become an anti-war classic. He went on to write several more plays, more than a dozen screenplays, two works of nonfiction, dozens of short stories (for which he won two O. Henry awards), and twelve novels, including The Young Lions (1948) and Rich Man, Poor Man (1970). Lyrical Memories of an Ordinary Man

Author Irwin Shaw doesn't strike a single false note as he takes the reader through the memories and daydreams of an ordinary man. The story's hero remembers with gentleness and humor the incidences of his boyhood and early life, including his war experiences and long marriage, that guided and shaped him into manhood.
