Chamberlain studies jazz saxophone for awhile with Marsh (1927-87), but eventually gave it up in favor of his day job teaching literature and writing about jazz. Still the experience inspired him to produce a biography of his teacher. Aside from some exuberant fans, he says, Marsh was considered a very good second-level tenor saxophonist during his career, but attributes his lack of recognition primarily to an outsider temperament that led him to mismanage his own affairs and contribute to his own obscurity. A Scholarly Appraisal of an Underrated Jazz Genius

Safford Chamberlin's love for his subject matter, the jazz solos of the late tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh, comes out on every page of this unusually well researched and well written biography.
Marsh was a child prodigy who fell under the spell of the eccentric jazz recluse Lennie Tristano, the founder and guru of a school of highly disciplined post-bebop jazz in New York City during the late 1940's. Marsh ping-ponged between Tristano and the West Coast, mostly in relative obscurity, until he died on stage at Donte's in North Hollywood in December 1987.
Chamberlin skillfully weaves the facts of Marsh's life with details about his milieu and descriptions of his recordings. The chapters describing Marsh's early recordings with fellow Tristanoite Lee Konitz are particularly interesting. Chamberlin delicately deals with the difficult subjects of drugs, commercialism and racism in jazz music.
I have read many jazz biographies, some lurid, some sloppy and inaccurate. This one, however, treats the subject matter with the seriousness and attention to detail this wonderful music we call "jazz" deserves.

Opened my eyes

I have been reading about and listening to the Tristano guys for almost a year now, but was always partial to Lee Konitz. I've done some study of his playing and listened to a lot, from Tristano to present day. I am a great fan of his playing, through all the evolutions of his style.

Unfortunately, it caused me to overlook Warne Marsh on those recordings. I've read Konitz's bio and Tristano's, and picked this up to complete the set. The biography is compelling, and so very well written. I've read some horrible biographies recently, but this one just grabbed me, both with Marsh's story and the way Safford Chamberlain writes about it. Plenty of detail, without going overboard (I'm looking at YOU, Tad Szulc. Chopin admirers, don't waste your time on "Chopin in Paris"...).

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the book are the transcriptions. Chamberlain has included transcriptions of Warne Marsh solos, generally chronological through his career, and they are spaced out in the book several chapters at a time. If you can find the recordings, it's really great to watch his solos unfold. Even after reading along with the first one, my ears were opened in a new way to Warne Marsh's playing, and he has quickly become a favorite. The analysises (anylysi? Analyses? Whatever, plural, there is one with each transcription) included are also good, they point out some important things that might be overlooked.

All the information about Warne Marsh and his music is so wonderful, and compiled MASTERFULLY. The perfect amount of info, spaced and presented perfectly, and the inserted transcriptions really seal the deal.

I have since gone back to listen to the older solos, and also check out the evolution of his playing (the Red Mitchell records...my god!), and "An Unsung Cat" is so very true. Him and Konitz, from Tristano through their individual growth away from that style (while never abandoning what they gained through it), are, generally, the only two horn players I can get excited about any more (aside from the undeniable legends). They've effectively ruined most jazz for me...a mixed blessing, but my appreciation for a well constructed solo is so much deeper than a year ago, in no small part thanks to this book.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR ALL JAZZ FANS.

A terrific book about a wonderful musician.

My biggest complaint about Ken Burns' "Jazz" was how many great musicians were ignored. People like Herbie Nichols, Serge Chaloff, Jimmy Raney, the list is almost endless. Safford Chamberlain's book about one of the most sorely underappreciated improvisers ever is superb. It puts in human terms the struggles that almost all jazz musicians faced from the late 1940's on in trying to document a music that was falling further and further from the public view. Lee Konitz has stated "I don't know of any other musician that realy surprised me as much as Warne did with his inventiveness." Mr. Chamberlain is an excellent writer, and I hope this book helps to turn more jazz fans onto to Warne.

Just got the book last week and devoured it. Finally a book that demystifies social media. I love the practical and proven methods for building a social marketing channel. I'm a "boomer" so this information really helps me to understand how to connect with the younger generations.

I especially appreciated the information regarding Linkedin and Facebook in how to engage with new buyers. I always thought that "content marketing" was the way to go and this book confirms it and even more importantly, shows me how!

Sultan offers them protection and uses them to trap Nadira. But can they survive Nadira’s wrath and cunning, as well as Sultan’s keen desire for revenge, or will they eventually become pawns in another gangster’s world?

Gripping & fantastic novel!

In the Name of Love is a fantastic novel! It's gripping, believable, and a real page-turner. It's hard to face that slavery may be thriving in our Western home towns; hard to realize anyone young educated, illiterate, well-off or poor is vulnerable. This story brings together a vicious circle of misfortune and brutality and demonstrates through intrigue and both good and bad fortune just how unsuspecting victims can be cornered for life. Both sympathetic and brutal characters are woven in poetic prose throughout, "Kachri was born at an unpleasant moment when the planets came close to a collision". Only one chance meeting stretches our sense of reality--the rest is soberingly believable. All is not dark--true friendship and romance are woven throughout. A really good read!

The book is very well written and extremely gripping. Even after you finish reading the book the depths of the characters keep you intrigued and thinking. The versatility of the author also amazed me. I read his first book 'chopped green chilles with vanilla ice cream'and I was pleasantly surprised to find out how different this book is from his first book. Great Read!!!

Read this book in one sitting. It's awesome depictions of the characters and scenes, it's subtle wit, it's flawless plot will make this bone-chilling action thriller memorable to me for a very long time. I will give an A+ to this book.

About the Author

A woman married just long enough to feel unappreciated finds herself in the arms of another man. It's an old story, but Irwin Shaw does some brilliant things with it in his immersive if somewhat melodramatic novel "Lucy Crown."

Reading "Lucy Crown" is like stepping through a time portal to the time of its 1956 publication. Well-known then yet forgotten today, it depicts an era where people dressed for cocktails, where casual get-togethers were called "smokers," where a man could openly fret about his son spending so much time with his mother that he'll wind up "in the ballet." People give big speeches as to what it's all about. This is the sort of novel that Douglas Sirk no doubt would have directed the movie adaptation of had Shaw not been blacklisted at the time.

It's easy to point out how the novel runs afoul of modern sensibilities. Yet despite a major plot point halfway in that seems too fantastically cruel to be real, "Lucy Crown" grabs you and doesn't let go. Drawn in amid the summer splendor of a Vermont cottage to the novel's three central characters, the title character, her husband, and her son, it's easy to get lulled and comfortable by Shaw's low-key descriptive fluidity, his way of putting you inside their skins. Then boom, things change for no apparent reason except boredom and frustration, and choices are made with seemingly irrevocable results. Yes, it's all a bit much to swallow at times, yet however appalling the behavior of these characters, you want to see how they turn out.

I think feminists would have a field day with this book, alternately braining and celebrating Shaw's take on the American woman circa 1956. "Adultery is the upper-middle-class American woman's form of self-expression," as one character puts it, and indeed it seems a common enough thing as Shaw writes about it. Marriage is for fools, he seems to say, yet women who struggle for a more independent course are poised to do others a lot of damage while helping themselves hardly at all.

One of the more interesting elements of the novel is the way it draws on the characters' ennui even as it engages the reader. We watch the boy grow from a sickly innocent into jaded outsider who can scarcely stand to be in the same room with someone expressing honest emotion. Like with all the characters, you want to yell at him to get over himself, but Shaw lays enough groundwork for you to accept his depiction as an honest one.

There are some searing moments in this book, and some clever ones. The latter includes a first chapter that features a beautiful older woman eyeing a younger man at a Paris bar, all fed through the sensibilities of a jaundiced patron we never meet again. It's a sort of short story in itself, with a perfect capper of a conclusion, the type Shaw was famous for even more than his fairly successful novels. Yet this opener isn't a stand-alone gem; it sets the rest of the novel in motion. Reading the first chapter is like eating that first potato chip: Stop there if you dare.

Ultimately the book loses a bit of steam before winding things up with a fairly pat ending. But the ride is a memorable one, and from about page 100 to 250 you won't read many books faster than this. Written before the age of irony, Shaw isn't afraid of the catharsis or the big emotional revelation. This could have made "Lucy Crown" a silly period piece, but instead the courage of its convictions, along with its author's talent and vision, carry it through.

This is one of the best books I've ever read!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a true story of love and loss. It is hard to believe a man wrote this story. Lucy Crown makes a terrible mistake that alters her entire life. Somehow she finds the strenght to deal with her pain. You can feel Lucy Crown. This is one of the few books I have read many times. Excellent summer reading

A Fine, Seemingly Largely Forgotten Novel Written By A Master

If you have already read reviews about this book you probably already know the plot. But I don't want to risk spoiling anything. I just finished this novel. Another reviewer described the conclusion as a "pat ending". I actually was quite moved by the ending. There were times I felt the novel was very painful and I needed some reconciliation.

I have come to have a great appreciation of Irwin Shaw. I am reading his novels in order and have read many of his short stories and one play. Thus far in my reading of Irwin Shaw novels, I have found some patterns. There seem to be a plethora of unusually sophisticated males from the North East United States. Sort of an American version of James Bond (Martini... shaken not stirred... Able to quote Shakespeare at the correct moment...) in various civilian occupations. These adult males do not reflect my personal reality. I wished I knew some people this sophisticated.

The women are portrayed as slightly of a lower station and submissive. This may simply be a product of the time period. Also, in this story there is a twenty year old college student who is more sophisticated than any such students that I have met.

If you know NOTHING about this novel, stop here and read the novel... Then, if you are still interested, come back and finish this review.

I suppose in some ways Irwin Shaw intentionally lays false this veneer of apparent sophistication. There is a very unfortunate event that occurs in the story, and a vulnerable child's parents make a series of seemingly unbelievably stupid decisions at the expense of the child. This sets the tone for a good part of the remainder of the novel. As a parent, I resented both of the parents at this point, and thus actually found the novel unbelievable. For me, that was the weak point in the novel. I suppose it was necessary to have the story unfold the way it does.

From there the story heads to its conclusion. The individuals are shown to be flawed, but decent and humane. Personally I needed that to happen to redeem the earlier painful missteps.

For whatever reason I have become fascinated with post World War II popular American novelists. I suppose it has something to do with the beginning of the transformation of an earlier America into the modern America that we know. I keep trying to figure out which of these authors are my personal favorite. On the female side, I truly love Carson McCullers and Flannery O'Connor. I feel that way about Harper Lee but wished she had written more work. On the male side, I greatly enjoy Saul Bellow, James Michener, Leon Uris, and Kurt Vonnegut. I feel the same way about Ralph Ellison as I do Harper Lee. I have a new and growing appreciation for Truman Capote. But I enjoy Irwin Shaw as much as any of them.

About the Author
Thane Rosenbaum is a novelist, essayist, and law professor. Brilliant and Thought-provoking

I was prompted to buy this book after hearing the author on NPR. He struck me as a thoughtful man with great insight into both human nature and the law, yet the interviewer seemed more interested in refuting his arguments than in giving his ideas a fair hearing. I was intrigued. What was so threatening about Mr. Rosenbaum's ideas that the interviewer was willing to treat his guest rudely on a nationally-broadcast radio program? Was the author some sort of blood-thirsty maniac?

The answer, I'm happy to say, is a resounding, "No!" In fact, I believe this is one of the most important books of social commentary that I've ever read. Using evidence from game theory, psychological experiments, brain scans, and anthropological studies, Rosenbaum makes a convincing case for the human need for fairness and moral balance. He then takes us into the modern American courtroom where victims are silenced, truth is irrelevant, and the restoration of moral balance is no longer possible. In such circumstances, Rosenbaum asks, are we not at risk of provoking the kind of vengeance-seeking from victims of crime that our justice system was created to abolish?

Rosenbaum points out that the desire for revenge created by our dysfunctional justice system has found an outlet in art, and his use of fictional characters to illustrate some of his points is enlightening. Fiction is a useful tool for revealing the true nature of situations that in real life are often too nuanced or ponderous (a movie is over in a couple of hours; a crime may not be prosecuted for decades) to understand at anything other than a subconscious level. I found myself wondering if the preponderance of violent video games is a reflection of this human need to rebalance a world that seems devoid of moral balance and honor.

Make no mistake, in PAYBACK, Mr. Rosenbaum is NOT advocating vigilante justice. Rather, he is pointing out that ignoring the real human need for victims of crime to be made whole, in a moral sense, is something that we dismiss at our peril. His reasoned plea for improvements to the American system of justice and consideration of the rights of victims for redress alongside - not in place of - the rights of the accused, is something that every person in this country should take seriously. It is the author's contention (and I agree) that restoring this kind of moral balance to our courts would temper the pervasive contempt for our court system that creates a thirst for vigilante justice.

Tedious, unenlightened and self important

The real problem with this book is that the author confuses what is hardwired with what ought to be. The basic premise is, 'hey, we're hardwired for revenge, so get out there and exact your pound of flesh.' There is no consideration for the notion that just because there are (potentially) some vestiges in our psyche that crave revenge that revenge in itself is unhealthy for society.

I heard an interview on NPR with this author, and he seemed annoyed with anyone who called in questioning his premise continually stating that it was impossible to have a real conversation with these people, yet he continually dodged their questions, showing that he was the one who couldn't have a real conversation about the topic. When asked what revenge would look like for someone who was raped, he said that was a good question but then never answered it. It almost seems like he wrote this book with one purpose in mind - to provoke.

If you're someone who believes that unending cyclical retribution is the best path forward for the human race, then this book is for you. But it wasn't for me.

No argument, just a bunch of stump-thumping

The University of Chicago Press is arguably the best university press going, but this book is a disgrace. Through five chapters it produces nothing but repetitions of the claim "victims have rights!" and a tedious stream of anecdotes. I bought it thinking it might be useful in a course on vengeance, paranoia, and revenge drama I teach, especially because the state-centered system of justice and rehabilitative punishment really are flawed, but the book lacks cogent argument, philosophical nuance, and historical depth. My freshmen regularly produce better arguments than this. It's a waste of time and money. If you want a real book on the topic, try John Kerrigan's Revenge Tragedy: Aeschylus to Armageddon, also on Amazon.

While leaving room for adapting or creating new rituals in accord with differing family compositions, customs and cultural heritages, the authors of this notably jargon-free psychological study offer practical advice on how to best use words and symbols to create special events through which to celebrate life's continuity, rhythmic cycles and changes from birth to death. About the Author
Evan Imber-Black, Ph.D., is Director of Program Development at the Ackerman Institute for the Family, and Professor of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is an internationally recognized practitioner and consultant in family therapy. She is also the author of The Secret Life of Families: Truth-telling, Privacy and Reconciliation in a Tell-all Society.

Janine Roberts, Ed.D., is Professor and Family Therapist at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She is treasurer of the American Family Therapy Academy, and former editor of the Journal of Feminist Family Therapy. She presents frequently to national and international audiences on rituals, family stories, and family therapy.

An unfortunately fluffy title for a book of substance.

An approachable and down-to-earth look at some of the baggage (good and bad) we carry around about holidays, celebrations and traditions. While it can get very repetitive in some places and some of the examples are dated, it is good material for facilitating discussion. So many of us go through the motions mindlessly or, worse, with some resentment. This offers options for how to look at changing what isn't working anymore into something that has meaning. Despite it's publication date, there is still much relevant material in the book.

Explores the importance and value of secular rituals

RITUALS FOR OUR TIMES is a well-written and lucid description of the importance of rituals in our lives, regardless of one's spiritual beliefs. In modern, Western, secular culture, many of us have forgotten the value of marking life passages in ways that speak to our individual needs. Well-organized and well-written, with helpful questions to guide us through planning a ritual and whom to include, RITUALS FOR OUR TIMES brings us back to the power and pleasure of even everyday rituals. Through their suggestions, we learn how we can plan rituals with forethought and conscious choice and without rigidity to old ways that no longer work. With touching stories, authors Imber-Black and Roberts demonstrate the potency of ritual to facilitate growth and resolve conflicts--old and new.

I've used this book so often over the years!

I was just recommending this book on a forum today and came here to provide a link. When I saw only two reviews I knew I had to add to the list. This is a book that should be reprinted but find it used if that's the only way you can buy it. I wrote: As a young mom I bought this book years ago called Rituals For Our Times by Evan Imber-Black and Janine Roberts. The subtitle is Celebrating, Healing and Changing Our Lives and Our Relationships. I can't recommend this book enough for people blending traditions from families or going through changes in their lives. I've read it many times and used the very sensible advice to create or change my own family traditions over the years. It's enabled me to be flexible and really think about the meaning and purpose behind the rituals. The examples in the book are very relevant to our multi-cultural society. There are even some good rituals for those who are divorced or blending new families together and advice about how to deal with changes when a family member passes away, especially if they were the driving force behind the gathering.

Evan and Janine (I feel I almost know them I've read this so often) have really covered every base from holidays to birthdays to life transitions to ritualizing things like divorce and welcoming new people into the family. They talk about ritual meanings, symbols, and styles. I can't imagine any part of ritual they left out! This book added immeasurably to the positive experiences of my own nuclear family and helped me blend my own rituals with my husband's when we married. I can't recommend it enough and have loaned it out many times over the years.
