Sherwin leads the reader through five periods of Jewish history: the era of biblical prophets, Jesus and first-century Israel; Babylonian rabbis of the third and fourth centuries; the east European Hasidic Masters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and twentieth century North African rabbis. In all cases, the moral authority of the leaders came primarily from popular belief in their power to work wonders for the people.

Sherwin applies history to the current situation. If the clergy is to be re-empowered, to reclaim leadership and authority as holy people, they must reassert the ability to work wonders. This does not require dramatic miracles, but deeds that might well be perceived by people as nothing short of miraculous: saving a marriage, finding someone a job, finding homes for the homeless, bringing hope to the hopeless.

This is a book that every member of the clergy and every religious leader should read, ponder and take to heart.

Graham Oppy is professor of philosophy at Monash University. He is author of Ontological Arguments and Belief in God, Philosophical Perspectives on Infinity, and Arguing about Gods, co-author of Reading Philosophy of Religion, and co-editor of History of Western Philosophy of Religion and Companion to Australian Philosophy.

N. N. Trakakis is lecturer and research fellow in the Department of Philosophy at Monash University and at Deakin University. He is author of The God Beyond Belief and The End of Philosophy of Religion, editor of William L. About the Author
Joel Barber was a New York architect who spent 20 years studying and collecting wild fowl decoys. He is also the author of the Derrydale book Long Shore. His collection of decoys is now in Vermont's Shelburne Museum, where it forms the nucleus of the largest and most important public collection in the world.

I'm a decoy carver and collector and found this book last year at a decoy shop payed way more so this a good deal I have a few decoys from some of the people in this book it's real detailed it mentioned knotts island n.c./v.a. where I grew up and learned how to carve so this book sparked my interest good I recommend this book yo any collector or someone interested in folk art it has great pics of some rare works of at

Divided into two sections, the book opens with material for candidates, taking them through the process from the initial decision about applying to fill an opening all the way through to the successful candidate's transition. Along the way, she is careful to note where there may be special concerns for internal candidates, for non-traditional candidates, and for unsuccessful candidates. That breadth makes it one that should stay on a handy bookshelf-even after the first reading. The second section, aimed at search committees, covers an equally complete spectrum, from developing a position description through the transition for the successful candidate. This section of the narrative offers not only straight process/procedure design and advice, but also occasional advice on how these elements might affect a candidate's perception of the institution. Candidates and search committees should read both sections; their ability to see themselves from across the table should improve the entire process for all involved. About the Author
Gary Commins is rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Long Beach, California. In twenty-five years of ordained ministry he has served in an ecumenical campus ministry, in a bilingual, multicultural parish, in a congregation with a large gay and lesbian population, and, for ten years, teaching a seminary class in Multicultural Ministry. He is also a trained spiritual director with an interest in mysticism and is currently the Vice Chair of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship.

"Becoming Bridges" lays the groundwork for becoming human conduits in establishing the spirit and practice of diversity as an inherent part of life in the faith community. Using stories of encounters with people from his parish, Gary Commins inspires the reader to see that in spite of their religion, race, culture, class, gender, or sexual orientation there is a commonality in our divine and human diversity.

Gary Commins is an ordained Episcopalian pastor of a bilingual, multicultural church parish. He has also served as in an ecumenical campus ministry, and as a seminary professor, teaching Multicultural Ministry. He is Vice Chair of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. His background, heartbeat, and compassion for modeling cross-cultural understanding are the basis for this book.

Gary invites the reader to become involved with others, to recognize everyone they meet, as equals. Commins relates diversity as a spiritual exercise filled with apprehension, and rewarded with expectation. He challenges the reader to thwart the gaps of ignorance to bridge that which separates us.

Detailed glimpses into the Jewish tradition of the Old Testament pave the way for the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament giving credence to Gary's premise on diversity. As a trained spiritual director with an interest in mysticism, Gary's writing is also filled with the wisdom, philosophy, and traditions from diverse classical and contemporary backgrounds, thinking, and influence. His stories resonate with passion, opening the way for the reader to identify, empathize, and emulate Gary's personal fervent desire for practicing diversity.

Each chapter concludes with a spiritual exercise (an action step to take), a spiritual counsel (food for thought and meditation), and a spiritual practice (something to assimilate and put into practice in your daily life). These probing questions and practical spiritual exercises are designed to be life-changing. I highly recommend this new edition of Bill Fibkin's book on mentoring. Over the years, I have worked closely with teachers in both primary and secondary education. In my experience the well-trained, collaborative teacher may be the one consistently responsive adult in a child's life. Many of us retrospectively credit a teacher for our own productive adult lives. Bill's prescription of mentoring is a critical asset for both experienced teacher preservation and new teacher retention. The mentor learns anew by supporting a grateful young colleague, and the young teacher grows in respect to self and chosen profession. Better yet, isolation is relieved for both. As Bill suggests, teacher and student are inextricably connected on a path to learning. For the abused and/or neglected child, the connection can lead to life long healing. Dr. Bill Fibkins, a great educator, has trained and inspired scores of teachers and now he's done it again in this second edition. About the Author

Peter Semmelhack is the founder and CEO of Bug Labs, developer of an award-winning open source consumer electronics and web services platform, recently featured in MoMA's "Talk to Me" exhibit. As a founding member of the rapidly growing open hardware movement, Peter is a frequent speaker at events around the world. He is also founder, board member, and former CEO of Antenna Software, one of the country's largest mobile enterprise software companies. His work has been covered and discussed by the international media includingthe New York Times,the Economist, the Hindu, Fortune, CNN, Nikkei Business, and Forbes. Peter holds a BA in economics from Brown University.

Very interesting vision of our relationship with our things

Can you imagine your car becoming your friend on Facebook?

The author dives into what it would be like to have your house and car talking to each other about you and your needs. All of our gadgets, from our phones to our refrigerators, could create social connections with us and our friends and family.

This book is not about new technology, all of these things already exist, this book is about how to capitalize on the emerging trend of connected devices. As a product manager, I appreciate learning how to integrate my products so that developers will want to write applications for me, and consumers will want to use my product because of the applications written for it.

I would recommend the book to everyone from engineers to CEOs, including designers and marketing professionals.

Provides a new view on IoT Devices

This is an interesting read, giving the reader an introduction to the idea of social machines. It expands on the emerging concept of internet of things, and goes further by describing the benefits and use cases that could be made possible when including machines in social networks.
However, note that this book simply gives an overview and presents a couple of interesting ideas, but is not a technical book. You will find no tutorials, or information on how to proceed with the actual implementation of connected machines.

Excellent (understandable) framework for complex topic

Peter does a great job applying an understandable framework to a complex (and timely) topic. He provides a solid foundation on what "social machines" represent and why they are relevant. He then goes on to explain how to apply the framework across verticals, products, etc. Excellent, worthwhile read.
