Women, Violence and Tradition: Taking FGM and Other Practices to a Secular StateFrom Zed Books

Is the practice of FGM on the rise in the UK and US? Why? What happens to religious and cultural traditions when they are taken from their context into a new, often secular, state? Women, Violence and Tradition is a fascinating look into the life histories of women from ethnic minority communities in the West, focusing specifically on their experiences of under-researched cultural practices. The book gives close insight into how ethnic minority women today navigate between their religious and cultural traditions and the secular state in which they live. The volume illuminates areas of tension and difficulty when some women actively try to reform aspects of their tradition whilst remaining furiously loyal to their cultural identity. Other examples highlight how young women are choosing to endorse traditional practices, seeing this as an important way of demonstrating the legitimacy of their religion and culture in the face of increasing hostility. This brave and original book tackles the sensitive and controversial issue of female genital mutilation, as well as surveying changing attitudes and practices around marriage and divorce. Using a cross-cultural perspective the book draws on the views of activists and community organisations who work with women to confront injustice.

Review
'Women, Violence and Tradition takes a unique approach to generating its content. It has involved women who are students and/or activists in collecting and writing up the stories of BME women who have been affected by the cultural traditions and practices that are the focus of the book - from FGM to dowry within Hindu communities. Many of the contributors to this volume also have first-hand experience of the traditions and practices that they are writing about and this lends a sense of authority and insight to their writing that is often absent in purely academic studies. The volume aims to highlight how women uphold, challenge and defend aspects of these traditions and practices, which often result in violence, in the context of the "secular" British state. It draws our attention the ways in which they are often underpinned by particular understandings of religion and culture that can make it difficult to challenge and negotiate them. The chapters are engaging and personal, and result in a volume that will appeal to the general public as well as an academic audience.' - Dr Emma Tomalin, University of Leeds 'A ground-breaking collection that at its heart deals with issues of social justice, equity and rights. Readers are given a unique opportunity to hear the life histories and stories of women as they live their lives across and as part of complex cultural, religious and social communities in Britain. This collection gives voice to women and in doing so transcends the boundaries of "insiders versus outsiders" and "religious versus the secular". Instead we learn that women's lives are complex, negotiated and strategic but also that women do and can "speak" to challenge gender violence and in doing so challenge oppressive cultural and religious practices and redefine our understandings of identity, belonging and community.' - Dr Samia Bano, University of Reading 'Carefully organised and tightly edited, Women, Violence and Tradition shines a critical light on the narratives of women from diaspora communities in the UK, focusing specifically on their experiences of gendered violence and the challenges encountered by those who seek to foster social change. In the wake of this insightful volume, the reductive, essentialist ways in which violence against women in black and minority ethnic communities has so often been represented in the past will no longer be possible. It is essential reading for researchers, students, policy-makers and practitioners alike.' - Dr Aisha Gill, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, University of Roehampton

Hastur Lord
By Michele Briere
I loved this book! Written from a manuscript that Ms. Bradley started before her death, Ms. Ross has picked up the mantle of Bard of Darkover with such grace and skill that I've only noticed a few nuances different from Darkover's creator, Marian Zimmer Bradley. I have enjoyed all the Darkover books Ms. Ross has co-authored (in reality authored alone), so I expected a great read. This was a fabulous read!

This story is not only about the continued threat of the Terrans to take over a world they consider inferior; it is a love story.

Regis, new Regent of Darkover at the death of his grandfather, is caught between his love for his beloved Danilo, love for former lover and the mother of his children, Linnea, and his love of his world. Regis would be perfectly happy spending the rest of his life lived quietly with his sworn paxman, Danilo, but duty calls. When he discovers an older half-brother living in a monistary, he sees a means to an end. Dispite misgivings, he abdicates the throne to his brother. Then the nightmare begins.

This is Regis' story, taken up years after the infamous Sharra Rebellion. This is a story of political power and the uses of it both subtle and draconian. This is the making of Darkover's most beloved Regent.

Disappointing and clumsy
By T. V. Reichert
I first read Heritage of Hastur when I was 12 years old and it completely rocked my world. I remember just bawling by the end of that book, and I hold it dear to my heart.
This book continues the story of Regis and Danilo that began in that book, and that is why I have given it three stars - anything that picks up and extends that story has some intrinsic value. Unfortunately, in all other respects, the book is extremely disappointing. The character development is almost completely missing. We don't gain any insight into any of the (numerous) major characters over the many pages of the story. Regis Hastur is the backbone of all of the "modern" Darkover stories, and yet here you get almost no sense of him. Like so many other characters (including Rinaldo, Valdir Ridenow and Danilo), it is impossible to get a fix on him because we have so little interior development. Half the time each of these characters seems completely lame, and then the other half of the time they seem quite strong, but there is no real character development. The fights and rivalries that we see seem largely based on the assumption that these people are basically morons - does Dani really believe that Regis just abandons him to Rinaldo? Really? It seems rather incredible, given the history, but if we are going to believe it, we need some explanation about what would be behind such a belief. Similarly, Regis highly values Danilo's advice as his paxman. Why is he so unwilling to trust Danilo's distrust? Very little of it makes sense in terms of motivations or in terms of character arc.
The writing itself is not very graceful. And there is just too much packed into this one story, much of which is not satisfactorily resolved. The story obviously tries to mine various current-day issues - religious strife, disputes about sexual orientation, the role of women, etc. - but it takes too many ideas and does too little with any of them.
The book also needed a real editor. It uses the same "old sayings" over and over - I think each and every chapter must have reused the saying about not being able to put a banshee chick back into its egg; every chapter talked about how few Comyn are still around; etc. (And the Kindle edition, which is what I read, is horrendous - probably every paragraph had a word that had spacing problems. No one ever proofed it - if they did, they should be fired.)
All in all, a very disappointing book.

Wonderful to be back on Darkover again...
By Grey Lady
I have been waiting for quite some time for this book to be published. Any fan of Marion Bradley's world of Darkover will have known that it was expected any time, and the book certainly does not disappoint. Congratulations to Deborah Ross for reworking Marion's notes and manuscript in such a way that this intriguing world comes back to life once more, and - very important - in the way I believe Marion herself would have intended it to be. And the best part is that the book really adds something to what already exists. We finally get to understand how Regis turns from the somewhat insecure and naive (yes, he still was that at the end of Sharra's exile even though it was mostly by his intervention that the Sharra matrix was destroyed, and he was the one able to help Danilo who was even less certain of himself at the time)to the wily and sharp leader we encounter in Exile's Song and The Shadow Matrix. Excellent! Furthermore, it is highly interesting to find out how the threesome relationship between Regis, Danilo and Linnea comes about. After all, so far we only had a small glimpse of this in "World Wreckers" which only took Linnea into account, we knew about the way Regis and Danilo felt about each other from The Heritage of Hastur and Sharra's exile, and finally we see this relationship an established fact in Exile's song (again). For the fans it is also useful to know why Lew Alton had become such a morose character during his stay in the Senate, while he left Darkover with such optimism - being newly restored to his wife and daughter. Using the Alton Gift is never a recipe for becoming friendly and well-natured.

And then the plot itself...and I will not spoil it all, there must of course remain something to read for any new buyer of this book! Suffice it to say that, as has been stated often enough in a number of Marion's books: be careful what you ask for, you might just get it! And finding a brother out of the blue, may not be as welcome as you think. Also interesting are some new facets of the Christoforo brothers and their religion, and admittedly the approach does call to mind the way Christianity originally spread, once certain important people embraced it. Absolutely wonderful. So, here we have a book with an interesting plotline, great characterisation of the main participants, and an intriguing twist to the history of Darkover.

There is only one "but", and that is that both the personages of Rinaldo and Tiphany in my view were not well enough fleshed out. Of course, we read about what Rinaldo does, we see his actions, and his oral explanation for them. But, we never get to really understand him. We are not invited into his head (so to speak). This could have been intentional, as Regis also concludes this at the end of the book but I would have liked to know more about this. And Tiphany really is a caricature of a person, and it sure would have been interesting to know a bit more about this woman than that she was a religious fanatic and quite mad. Whatever made the nice Dan Lawson marry the woman? There must have been something! However, on the whole it was a great re-introduction to Darkover, one I'll probably return to once in a while. Good job, and I am looking forward to the next (there is still another one "in the wings").

Cuban Counterpoints: The Legacy of Fernando Ortiz (Bildner Western Hemisphere Studies)From Lexington Books

While Fernando Ortiz's contribution to our understanding of Cuba and Latin America more generally has been widely recognized since the 1940s, recently there has been renewed interest in this scholar and activist who made lasting contributions to a staggering array of fields. This book is the first work in English to reassess Ortiz's vast intellectual universe. Essays in this volume analyze and celebrate his contribution to scholarship in Cuban history, the social sciences—notably anthropology—and law, religion and national identity, literature, and music. Presenting Ortiz's seminal thinking, including his profoundly influential concept of 'transculturation', Cuban Counterpoints explores the bold new perspectives that he brought to bear on Cuban society. Much of his most challenging and provocative thinking—which embraced simultaneity, conflict, inherent contradiction and hybridity—has remarkable relevance for current debates about Latin America's complex and evolving societies.

Review
This volume is a compelling encounter with the many personas of Fernando Ortiz―anthropologist, lawyer, politician, humanist, and, perhaps most important, Cuban visionary. Ortiz's multidisciplinary contributions are approached with respect, affection, critical consciousness, and a welcome playfulness rarely seen in academic anthologies. Whether you are already familiar with the huge corpus left by Ortiz or discovering him for the first time, let this volume be your guide to the exuberance of Ortiz's legacy, which is not only a gift to Cuba but to our globalized world, struggling with ever more pathos to figure out why culture still matters. (Ruth Behar, University of Michigan)

This interesting collection of essays . . . highlights how relevant Ortiz's writings are to understanding contemporary as well as historical trends in the Americas. (Susan Eckstein, Boston University)

Learning Transfer Discussion
By Dr GMac
Learning Transfer in Adult Education is Okay for me. I didn't read anything that really stands out that could help learners better understand how the brain works to allow transfer of knowledge or learning experiences. I enjoyed reading about the Experiential Learning Process to compare and contrast what I already know about this experience and how it is used in educational environment where I work. I believe the Experiential Learning Process is more focused on learning through 'experiencing' than what the authors discuss. I believe using the Experiential Learning Cycle (ELC) is the best way to reinforce adult learning and this process includes all learning modes (hear, do, see or for the educated auditory, visual, kinesthetic) and opens discussion from within a group of participants or dyadic responses from pairs. I believe the book and knowledge discussed could provide more focus on the ELC and how it is used to reinforce learning transfer. There was little discussion about 'technology or distributed learning' and I believe both modes are having much more to do with learning transfer in the 21st Century than some of the information discussed by the authors. I encourage others in academia (specifically in educational psychology and education careers) to read and use this book to help understand how adults learn. All adults don't learn as well using the ELC, but in the type of educational experience we have here where I work, the ELC and Experiential Learning seems to work best for behavior modification or transformation. The book is easy to read and understand and doesn't over emphasize one particular mode of learning transfer. WGM 6 June 2016

Dexter's Final Cut: Dexter Morgan (7), by Jeff Lindsay

With 1.7 million copies of the Dexter novels sold, and ever-increasing critical acclaim, Jeff Lindsay returns to his groundbreaking and beloved character with his most entertaining book yet. Get ready for a grisly send-up of Hollywood, and a full dose of dark Dexter wit.

Lights. Camera. Mayhem. You won't find this story on television.

Hollywood gets more than it bargained for when television's hottest star arrives at the Miami Police Department and develops an intense, professional interest in a camera-shy blood spatter analyst named Dexter Morgan.

Mega-star Robert Chase is famous for losing himself in his characters. When he and a group of actors descend on the Miami Police Department for "research," Chase becomes fixated on Dexter Morgan, the blood spatter analyst with a sweet tooth for doughnuts and a seemingly average life. To perfect his role, Chase is obsessed with shadowing Dexter's every move and learning what really makes him tick. There is just one tiny problem . . . Dexter's favorite hobby involves hunting down the worst killers to escape legal justice, and introducing them to his special brand of playtime. It's a secret best kept out of the spotlight and away from the prying eyes of bloated Hollywood egos if Dexter wants to stay out of the electric chair. The last thing he needs is bright lights and the paparazzi. . . but even Dexter isn't immune to the call of fame.

Jeff Lindsay's razor sharp, devilish wit, and immaculate pacing prove that he is in a class of his own, and this new novel is his most masterful creation yet.

Chapter One

It all started so peacefully, just a few short weeks ago, on a lovely day in early autumn.

I had driven in to work as I always did, through the happy carnage that is rush hour in Miami. It had been a bright and pleasant day: sun shining, temperature in the seventies, the other drivers cheerfully honking their horns and screaming death threats, and I’d steered through it with a blissful feeling of belonging.

I had pulled into a spot in the parking lot at police HQ, still completely unaware of the lurking terror that awaited me, and carefully carried a large box of doughnuts into the building and up to the second floor. I’d arrived at my desk punctually, at my usual time. And I made it all the way into a seated position in my chair, a cup of vile coffee in one hand and a jelly doughnut in the other, before I ever for a moment suspected that today would be anything other than one more day of peaceful routine among the newly dead of Our Fair City.

And then the phone on my desk began to buzz, and because I was stupid enough to answer it, everything changed forever.

“Morgan,” I said into the receiver. And if I’d known what was coming I would not have said it so cheerfully.

Someone on the other end made a throat-clearing noise, and with a jolt of surprise I recognized it. It was the sound Captain Matthews made when he wanted to call attention to the fact that he was about to make an important pronouncement. But what momentous declaration could he possibly have now, for me, before I even finished one doughnut, and why would he speak it on the phone to a mere forensics wonk?

“Ahem, uh, Morgan,” the captain said. And then there was silence.

“This is Morgan,” I said helpfully.

“There’s a, um,” he said, and cleared his throat again. “I have a special assignment. For you. Can you come up to my office? Right now,” he said. There was another slight pause, and then, most baffling of all, he added, “Uh. Please.” And then he hung up.

I stared at the phone for a long moment before I replaced it in its cradle. I was not sure what had just happened, or what it meant: “Come up to my office right now”? Captains do not hand out special assignments to blood-spatter analysts, and we do not visit captains’ offices socially, either. So what was this about?

My conscience was clean—most mythical objects are—but I felt a small twinge of unease anyway. Could this be trouble—perhaps a confrontation over some emerging evidence of my Wicked Ways? I always cleaned up thoroughly—No Body Part Left Behind!—and in any case, it had been quite a while since I had done anything at all worth not talking about. In fact, it had just recently started to seem like much too long, and the past few evenings I had been fondling my little candidates list and thinking about a new Playdate. My last Enchanting Encounter had been several months ago, and I certainly deserved another soon—unless I had somehow been discovered. But as I thought back on that wonderful evening, I could remember no slipup, no lazy shortcut, nothing but painstaking perfection. Had Somebody Somehow found Something anyway?

But no: It wasn’t possible. I had been meticulously neat, as always. Besides, if my handiwork had been detected, I would not have received a polite invitation to come chat with the captain—with an actual “please” tacked onto it! I would instead be looking up at the Special Response Team clustered around my desk, peering at me through their laser-guided telescopic sights and begging me to try something.

There was clearly some other, simpler explanation for why Captain Matthews would summon me to Olympus, but no matter how diligently I pushed my mighty brain through its paces, it came up with nothing more than an urgent suggestion that I eat the doughnut before I entered the captain’s august presence. It was not actually an answer, but it was a good and practical thought, and it was followed by another: It didn’t really matter what he wanted. He was the captain; I was a lowly blood-spatter analyst. He gave commands and I obeyed them. That is all you know in this world, and all you need to know. And so with a rising chorus of “Duty Calls” skirling on my mental bagpipes, I got out of my chair and headed out the door, finishing my doughnut as I went.

Because he was a real captain, and very important in the general scheme of things, Matthews had a secretary, although she liked to be called an executive assistant. Her name was Gwen, and she had three virtues far above anyone else I had ever known: She was astonishingly efficient, unbearably serious, and uncompromisingly plain. It was a delightful combination and I always found it irresistible. So as I hurried up to her desk, wiping the residue of the doughnut off my hands and onto my pants where it belonged, I could not help attempting a very small bon mot.

“Fair Gwendolyn,” I said. “The face that launched a thousand patrol vehicles!”

She stared at me with a slight frown. “He’s waiting for you,” she said. “In the conference room. Go right in.”

It was not much of a zinger, but Gwen had never been known for her sparkling sense of humor, so I gave her my best fake smile anyway and said, “Wit and beauty! A devastating combination!”

“Go right in,” she repeated, with a face that might have been carved from stone, or at least very hard pudding. I breezed past her and went through the door and into the conference room.

Captain Matthews sat at the head of the table, looking earnest, manly, and at least semi-noble, as he almost always did. Sitting to one side of him was my sister, Sergeant Deborah Morgan, and she did not look happy. Of course, she very seldom did; between her carefully cultivated Cop Scowl and her general outlook of surly watchfulness, the most cheerful expression she had ever managed in my presence was a look of grudging acquiescence. Still, this morning she looked very much displeased, even for her. I turned my gaze to the other three people sitting around the table, hoping for some clue to my sister’s malaise.

Sitting closest to the captain was a man who was clearly Alpha Dog of the group. He was about thirty-five and wore what looked like a very expensive suit, and Matthews had inclined his head toward the man in a way that went beyond deferential and nearly approached reverence. The man looked up at me as I entered, scanned me as if he was memorizing a row of numbers, and then turned impatiently back to Matthews.

Sitting next to this charming individual was a woman so startlingly beautiful that for a half moment I forgot I was walking, and I paused in midstep, my right foot dangling in the air, as I gaped at her like a twelve-year-old boy. I simply stared, and I could not have said why. The woman’s hair was the color of old gold, and her features were pleasant and regular, true enough. And her eyes were a startling violet, a color so unlikely and yet so compelling that I felt an urgent need to move near and study her eyes at close range. But there was something beyond the mere arrangement of her features, something unseen and only felt, that made her seem far more attractive than she actually was—a Bright Passenger? Whatever it was, it grabbed my attention and held me helpless. The woman watched me goggle at her with distant amusement, raising an eyebrow and giving me a small smile that said, Of course, but so what? And then she turned back to face the captain, leaving me free to finish my interrupted step and stumble toward the table once more.

In a morning of surprises, my reaction to mere Female Pulchritude was a rather large one. I could not remember ever behaving in such an absurdly human way: Dexter does not Drool, not at mere womanly beauty. My tastes are somewhat more refined, generally involving a carefully chosen playmate and a roll of duct tape. But something about this woman had absolutely frozen me, and I could not stop myself from continuing to stare as I lurched into a chair next to my sister. Debs greeted me with a sharp elbow to the ribs and a whisper: “You’re drooling,” she hissed.

I wasn’t, of course, but I straightened myself anyway and summoned the shards of my shattered dignity, looking around me with an attempt at regaining my usual composure.

There was one last person at the table whom I had not registered yet. He had put a vacant seat between himself and the Irresistible Siren, and he leaned away from her as if afraid he might catch something from her, his head propped up on one elbow, which was planted casually on the table. He wore aviator sunglasses, which did not disguise the fact that he was a ruggedly handsome man of about forty-five, with a perfectly trimmed mustache and a spectacular haircut. It wasn’t possible to be sure with the sunglasses clamped to his face, but it certainly seemed like he hadn’t even glanced at me as I’d come clown-footing into the room and into my chair. Somehow I managed to conceal my crushing disappointment at his negligence, and I turned my steely gaze to the head of the table, where Captain Matthews was once again clearing his throat.

“Ahem,” he said carefully. “Since we’re all here, um. So anyway.” He nodded at Deborah. “Morgan,” he said, and he looked at me. “And, uh—Morgan.” He frowned, as if I had insulted him by choosing a name for myself that he’d already said, and the beautiful woman snickered in the silence. Captain Matthews actually blushed, which was almost certainly something he hadn’t done since high school, and he cleared his throat one more time. “All right,” he said, with massive authority and a sidelong glance at the woman. He nodded at the man in the impressive suit. “Mr., ah, Eissen here represents, um, BTN. Big Ticket Network.” The man nodded back at Matthews with a very deliberate display of patient contempt. “And, um. They’re here, in town. In Miami,” he added, in case we’d forgotten what town we lived in. “They want to shoot a movie. A, um, TV show, you know.”

The man in the sunglasses spoke up for the first time. “A pilot,” he said, without moving his face, parting his lips only enough to reveal a blinding set of perfect teeth. “It’s called a pilot.”

The beautiful woman rolled her eyes and looked at me, shaking her head, and I found myself smiling eagerly back at her, without any conscious decision to do so.

“Right,” said Matthews. “A pilot. Okay. So here’s the thing.” He slapped the table softly with both hands and looked back at Deborah. “Mr. Eissen has asked us for our cooperation. Which we are very happy to give them. Very happy,” he said, nodding at Eissen. “Good for the department. Positive image, and, uh, ahem.” He frowned again, drummed his fingers on the table, and stared at Deborah. “So that’s what you do, Morgan.” He frowned again and shook his head. “And, uh, Morgan. Both of you.”

Perhaps it was merely because I hadn’t finished my cup of awful coffee, but I had no idea what Matthews was talking about. And so, since Dexter has always been a quick study, I cleared my throat, too. It worked; Matthews looked at me with an expression of surprise. “I’m sorry, Captain,” I said. “But exactly what am I supposed to do?”

Matthews blinked at me. “Whatever it takes,” he said. “Whatever they ask you to do.”

Mr. Mustache spoke up, again without moving any facial muscles. “I neeeed,” he said, drawing out the word pointlessly, “to learn Who. You. Are.”

That made even less sense than what Matthews had said, and I could think of no reply more penetrating than, “Oh, uh-huh . . .” It must have sounded just as feeble to him as it did to me, because he moved at last, turning his entire head in my direction and flipping up the sunglasses with one manicured finger.

“I need to watch you, learn to do what you do, figure out how to be you,” he said. And he flashed his perfect white teeth at me. “Shouldn’t take more than a few days.”

The beautiful woman next to him snorted and murmured something that sounded like, “Asshole . . .” The man’s face gave a very slight twitch of irritation, but otherwise he ignored her.

“But why?” I said. And because I like to give as good as I get, I added, “Don’t you like who you are?”

The Goddess snickered; the man merely frowned. “It’s for the part,” he said, sounding slightly taken aback. “I need to research my character.”

I think I still looked a bit confused, because the beautiful woman gave me a dazzling smile that curled up my toes and made me happy to be alive. “I don’t think he knows who you are, Bob,” she said.

“Robert,” he grumbled. “Not Bob.”

“Some people actually haven’t heard of you, you know,” she said, a little too sweetly.

“He probably doesn’t know who you are, either,” Robert snarled back at her. “Unless he reads the tabloids.”

Mr. Eissen, the man in the wonderful suit, tapped one fingertip on the table. He did it very quietly, but everyone got silent and sat up a little straighter. Eissen gave me a microscopic smile. “Robert,” he said, emphasizing the name slightly, and then adding, “Robert Chase.” He gave a slight, dismissive shake of his head. “Robert is a well-known actor, Mr. Morgan.”

“Oh, right,” I said, giving Robert a friendly nod of the head. He flipped his sunglasses back down.

“Most actors like to get a sense of the . . . reality . . . behind the part they’re going to play,” Eissen said, and somehow he made it sound like he was talking about small children going through an unpleasant phase, and he gave me another condescending smile to go with it. “Jacqueline Forrest,” he went on, with a little flourish of his hand to indicate the beautiful woman. “Jackie is playing a hard-as-nails woman detective. Like your Sergeant Morgan.” He smiled at Deborah, but she didn’t smile back. “And Robert is playing the part of a forensics whiz. Which we hear is what you are. So Robert would like to follow you around at your job for a few days and see what you do, and how you do it.”

I have always heard it said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I did not recall anyone ever adding that flattery was actually a good thing, and I admit that I was not terribly pleased. It’s not that I have anything to hide—I’ve already hidden all of it—but I do like my privacy, and the idea of having somebody following me around and taking notes on my behavior was a bit unsettling.

Dexter's Disappointment
By itsmeLB
After waiting a few months for this book to swoop in and wrap up what has otherwise been a thoroughly cringe-inducing and fantastic suspense series, this fell completely flat. What I've loved about the Dexter books, in particular over the Showtime series, is that the character remains unemotional yet steady in his resolve to hide his character. His inner soliloquies are peppered with deadpan fare about what's "right" and what's morally ambiguous in his universe, but he projects such a relatable and human exterior to everyone around him (aside from Doakes, of course).

In Dexter's Final Cut, Dexter becomes a whining, self-indulgent anti-hero who does not go through a ritual kill and instead moons after a movie star because she's not as old (or at least, old-looking) as Rita. The plot is predictable, and there are multiple story lines opened without a close (why do Jackie and Robert hate each other that much? What is the point of Renny's shadow? What happened to Cody and Lily Ann? Where did Doakes go?). All in all, I enjoyed the book enough to finish it, but it's not something I'll probably read again.

Deaf, Dumb, Dexter
By Ogr8ys1
For those of you who are meeting Dexter for the first time expecting the book to follow the Showtime show you will be sorely disappointed, and those of you who know Dexter intimately through the novels will even be more disappointed. I loved the first few books, however after the "Dark Passenger" met a vampire (my memory is a little foggy to which novel this took place) I dropped the novels until this one was offered through Vine.

I enjoyed the book with some caveats and one major flaw. Dexter shows a wanderlust that cripples his other abilities which makes no sense. Dexter and Debra are assigned to be technical advisers to a crime drama set in Miami and when a killer shows up stalking the female lead, Dexter is assigned to be her bodyguard and perhaps a bit more. The writing will be familiar and somewhat satisfying as he goes about his ritual of stalking the killer, yet the interaction between his charge and he leaves him outside of his comfort zone, dumbing down his senses to the point that the reader will shake the book in fury trying to wake up their favorite character into action instead of idle thinking.

Cody, Astor, and Rita make appearances throughout the book annoying Dexter and this reader to the point where I wished Dexter would just kill all three of them to silence their whining. There is only so much a reader can take of the same message delivered 75 different ways.

The end of this book left me angry as the implausibility of the events that takes place ruins the entire reading experience. When you get to the last 20 pages it invalidates the whole novel as Lindsay's editor whispered in his ear to wrap it up and dump the other pages in the Atlantic. I can guarantee any true fan of Dexter will marvel at the disgust they will feel upon putting the book down. If there is another book forthcoming I will be skipping it as the best was written 10 years ago and the magic hasn't been recaptured since.

Didn't see it coming!

The ending was terrible! I was dumfounded. How can you do this to your readers! I've read every Dexter book and thought they were all excellent. I had the rug pulled from under my feet. Total shocker!

Sports columnist Lupica's suspense novel concerns a top basketball player who is accused of rape.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Summoning up her courage after a year, once-aspiring actress Hannah Carey accuses two Knicks basketball stars of raping her. When her younger brother leaks the story to ambitious New York sportswriter Marty Perez, the allegations become a source for media hype and personal agendas. Hired by the Knicks for damage control, ex-jock lawyer DiMaggio looks into Hannah's accusations. Sportswriter Lupica (Extra Credits, Villard, 1988) builds suspense by ending chapters at crucial moments or by dropping little narrative bombshells. This athletic mystery will especially appeal to sports fans.

depressing NBA/Crime novel
By T. Bratz
It is an interesting story, the problem is that it's too much like reading the sports section in the newspaper these days. When I pick up the sports section I like to read about sports, but it's sometimes hard to find in all of the financial and crime news. If you like Mike Lupica, you'll probably enjoy this book, but if you want to read a much better Lupica novel, try to get your hands on the Peter Finley novels (Extra Credits, Limited Partner and Dead Air).

Try one of his newer titles
By Bruce Tracy
After being mildly entertained by Lupica's novel Bump and Run, I decided to read his first novel, Jump. I was very disappointed. It is a very poorly written book with week characters, a shakey plot at best, and terrible dialogue. This was his first novel and he did seem to get better with Bump and Run, so I will probably take a look at his future offerings. I suggest skipping this one and picking up one of his newer books.

Not the best in the series, but still worth reading
By Ratmammy
FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE! By Muriel Jensen
FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE by Muriel Jensen is another book in the Harlequin series "Cooper's Corner", a small town in the northeast, centering on a Bed and Breakfast called Twin Oaks. In this story, Mike Flynn and his two daughters and huge St Bernard take a vacation in the small town of Cooper's Corner, while Colleen O'Connor and her two boys and Siamese are taking a vacation courtesy of her employer. Both families happen to be staying at the Twin Oaks. When they meet by accident, it's not love at first sight. While the kids all get along with each other and with the other parent, the two adults clash in a big way.
As with all romances, Mike and Colleen do start to have feelings for each other, but Colleen has a wall that prevents her from getting into any serious relationships. She was hurt by her ex-husband, and has decided not to get involved in any permanent relationships to avoid getting hurt again, or disappointing her young sons. Mike does not have custody of his daughters, but all Mike wants now is to have a family again, and it takes some doing for him to convince Colleen that they belong to each other.
While this was not the best in the Coopers Corner series, I still did enjoy FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE. The writing in the beginning was a little stiff, and I did not buy the fact that the two animals happened to have the same homophonic sounding names. (Chewy and Chiue). But once I got past that issue, I had no problems getting into the story and enjoying it. This reviewer is giving FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE 3 and a half stars.

Horrible Story!
By A Customer
For the Love of Mike! by Muriel Jensen wa such a horrible story that I couldn't force myself to finish it! The characters are lifeless and the plot (what I read of it) was boring. Not the usual norm for Ms. Jensen (nothing personal), sorry! It was almost as though a high school girl wrote the book?

Three women, three countries, three stories—the destinies of a Thai in prison for murdering her husband, a Cambodian longing for a child, and a Laotian Hmong refugee are threaded together by the tears leftover from the Vietnam War. Each of the women have been marked in some way by the atrocities of Pol Pot’s Cambodia, the Secret War in Laos, and the effects of these wars, as well as the Vietnam War on Thailand, where many displaced people from Laos and Cambodia found refuge, and where American soldiers sought refuge of another kind, ultimately leading to the development of Thailand’s sex tourism industry. The Buddhist concept of reincarnation is used to unite six main characters, three of whom are dead. The dead consist of a Cambodian monk, an American soldier who fought in Vietnam and died in Thailand and an American pilot who flew bombing missions in Laos and died there. These three become dead companions who are watching over three women who are still living with repercussions of war and the lasting imprint this devastation leaves generations later.
