I love this book. Compact, nice cover design, with appealing recipes -- some simple, some gourmet. Just got it but have tried three so far and they were all really really good. Will buy copies for friends trying to eat healthy.

Delicious, easy to prepare recipes and healthy besides!

I totally enjoy this cookbook for it's simple ingredients that I don't have to search a gourmet food store for, easy to prepare delicious recipes and the interesting tidbit facts about eggs throughout the book. I especially like the Misc-egg-laneous chapter with interesting things to do with the leftover yolks and eggshells! And to top it off it's HEALTHY.

Nothing New Here

What a useless book! Recycled gossip from many books that tell the same stories more eloquently and with more historic context. For example, the Mary Martin chapter is 90% about her career, 8% about being a lesbian and 2% about her Palm Springs connection. The book is also marred with many misspellings. The LGBT history of Palm Springs still deserves to be told.

False advertising. Little more than a statement of some fact/ some speculation about celebrities of the past, with very little about the development of what has become the modern Palm Springs. You might as well read the National Enquirer or something of that ilk; and the literary quality would be about the same.

Explains the culture perfectly

Mr. O'Banion's book does an honest and thorough job of explaining (exposing) an organizational culture that exists to serve its own needs first, and those of student learning and student achievment last. Every prospective community college and university student should read this book, and should then take very seriously the graduation/completion rate statistics being provided by the federally-mandated public disclosure law called the Student-Right-to-Know Act.

beware of the "learning college" -- and isn't that a redundant term?

Although I have not read the book and therefore cannot comment on its content, I teach at a community college and have been exposed to the "learning college" model of education. I was skeptical because the term itself, "learning college," is redundant. As a colleague of mine, a veteran of the U.S. armed services, once quipped, "I guess you could say I was in the Flying Air Force." While we should all acknowledge that the student and his or her education should be the first-and-last order of business, what our administration was trying to do did not bode well for the quality of the education itself. For instance, the so-called "learning college" would standardize education to the point that my English comp course should be exactly like another's, and I mean exactly. In other words, if a student needed to change from my MWF comp class because of his work schedule, he could shift into another teacher's TTh class without problem. That looks like a good idea on paper, but what does that mean to the individual character of a course? Such a scenario is on the face of it student-centered, but to achieve such a reality is to standardize the life right out of your institution. One teacher's course is just like another because all we're doing, in this model, is "delivering content." Teaching a course is not like working on an assembly line.

Graceful and inspiring

This is Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener's interpretive translation of a mid-20th century work found buried in the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto. Reb Kalonymous Kalman Shapira, its author, came from a long line of distinguished Hassidic rabbis, and his writings show that he lived up to his birthright. Amid the degradation within the ghetto, he was able to write a manual for transforming one's emotions and perceptions to focus on the spiritual. Rabbi Cohen-Kiener's translation makes use of contemporary spiritual vocabulary (drawn in part from the Fourth Way tradition) to make Reb Kalman's thought accessible to a wider audience.

good job on translation

This book is a translaiton of a particularly challenging hebrew version. I am not certain how true the translation is to the author's original version, but I found the translation to be unusually lucid. Instead of losing the reader in the general difficulties associated with reading in translation, they packaged the words of the great Rabbi Shapira in a "new agey" relatable kind of lexicon. Most people are not aware that the Torah has expression as is described in this book.

Good for Heart and Soul

Conscious Community by Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira was a book for an Ethics course in our congregation's University Series. If this entire world were participating in such philosophies, there might even be peace on earth! May we all be trained by such a master with people. To actually write this impressive book while amidst the horrors of the Holocaust (circa 1940ish) is statement enough about the man's character, and that there CAN be hope in even the most desperate of times.

Excellent introduction to the study of the Holiness movement. The book is thorough but not overwhelming, and is indespensible to the study of Protestant Christianity in North America and overseas. This book fills a niche and covers a topic often neglected by the Reformed-dominated American East Coast academy. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Xavier Zubiri (1898-1983), is a famous contemporary Spanish philosopher. Zubiri rethought the problems of philosophy in a very profound way and developed a radically new approach to knowing and reality, termed Sentient Intelligence. His thought is a synthesis of classical philosophy (from Aristotle to St. Thomas) and phenomenology, but goes beyond both. Zubiri's theological writings utilize this philosophical framework. Thomas Fowler is president and founder of the Xavier Zubiri Foundation of North America. He has translated two other works by Zubiri and is editor of The Xavier Zubiri Review, a journal devoted to Zubiri studies. He also serves as adjunct professor at George Mason University and his book, The Evolution Controversy, A Survey of Competing Theories was published in 2007. Nelson Orringer is a retired professor of comparative literature at the University of Connecticut, who has authored many books about Spanish literary and philosophical figures and has translated a book by Zubiri into English. He is widely respected as an expert on twentieth century Spanish authors, especially Ortega y Gassett, Unamuno, and Zubiri, among others. Joaquín Redondo is a longtime scholar and researcher of Zubiri. A native speaker of both Spanish and English, he is in a unique position to translate Zubiri's philosophical expressions, often metaphorical, into clear English. He has also translated three other works by Zubiri in addition to this book, and is preparing a fifth.

When women were smart, sexy and funny

Elizabeth Kendall's book analyzes a very specific and short-lived period of classic hollywood movies, coinciding in large part with the great depression. Many of the great movies of this era are notable for the strong, nuanced and mature representation of women that they portray, as distinct from films that came both before and after. Kendall explains this as a product of both the individuals (directors and actors) involved in forming these movies, and the effect the prevailing social conditions had on audience taste. Among the films that Kendall discusses in detail are 'Ladies of Leisure', 'It happened one night', 'Alice Adams', 'Swing Time', 'Mr Deeds goes to Town', 'My Man Godfrey', 'Stage Door', 'The Awful Truth', 'Love Affair', 'Penny Serenade', 'The Lady Eve' and 'The Palm Beach Story'. This is an interesting and thought provoking read about a wonderful period of movies, and it gave me some great ideas of movies I have not seen to seek out.

An excellent book on the subject

Ever since the Battelle Film Club's showing of Preston Sturges' The Palm Beach Story, I've been on a screwball kick. Screenplays, biographies, non-fiction, what-have-you about that lunatic genre of film greatly interest me. This book by Kendall isn't solely about screwball, but rather an overview of the larger film genre that it falls under, the romantic comedy. Sturges is only the last chapter here. The majority of director coverage goes to Frank Capra and Leo McCarey, and the book goes even more into the lives of the major actresses of the period, Barbara Stanwyck, Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, and Claudette Colbert, who the author asserts were co-creaters of the classic romantic comedy films. The argument goes like this: due to the depression and the unusual success of particular directors (men, and I use the term correctly in this case, who were able to fulfill the cathartic needs of the public going through this rough period), these directors were given extremely free reign. They used it to explore collaborations with their favorite subjects, these independent women. Movies before and after delegated women more to the supporting roles (with notable exceptions, but only as exceptions), but in these romantic comedies of the 30s the women were the lead and often the most sympathetic and fleshed-out characters.

While the descriptions of the making of the movies was quite interesting, it is the concise biographies of the people involved--directors, actors, actresses, and writers--that help you understand this moment in cinema history. An excellent book on its subject.

very engaging

This is an extremely well-thought out book that should be just as interesting to a film scholar as to the casual reader. Kendall's exploration of the feminist potential in thirties romantic comedy is very assured. Biographical criticism is coming back with a vengeance (in Literary circles anyway) and the author's focus on the relationship between the directors and their female stars makes this book an ideal companion to the more textually-oriented Stanley Cavell's "Pursuits of Happiness". She chooses great movies to discuss. I particularly like her focus on the Capra-Stanwyck relationship--and I envy her for having seen "Forbidden" & "Ladies of Leisure", which I can't find anywhere!

The three distinct phases in administering Bremen had a profound impact on the denazification of the city. Denazification legislation was first determined by the Americans, then by the British, and then again by the Americans. Throughout, denazification teams tried to find a middle way between the American dictum of a radical purge of the whole population and the less ambitious British goal of only cleansing the administration.

This delicate balancing act led to an implementation of a purge that was unique to the Bremen enclave. While it succeeded in discovering and punishing many of the main functionaries of the Nazi regime, it also fell victim to its own ambition and collapsed underneath the weight of its administrative processes. As deadlines and waning governmental support forced a quick end to the program, the bloated denazification bureaucracy resorted to classifying most of the remaining cases as benign "followers," even when they hardly deserved that label.
