Brady shifted in his easy chair and stretched his legs in front of him, flexing his foot and rubbing at the pain that shot from his heel to his thigh. His right leg ached when he sat for too long. Sadly, most of what he did involved sitting, as well as thinking and occasionally taking the edge off with a cold beer.

He had nowhere to go and nothing to do except twice weekly rehabilitation appointments. One of those appointments was with the shrink from the hospital. He dreaded those visits.

It was late and most televisions stations were showing infomercials. He reached for the remote to change the channel, but stopped when a knock sounded at the door. Who was visiting this late?

He planned to ignore it and hope whoever it was went away. Instead, keys in the lock jingled and then his brother Harris's voice called, "Brady?" as the door swung open.

Brady didn't want to deal with a family visit right now. "What are you doing here?" he asked, knowing he sounded surly. But that was how he felt. Surly and angry. He didn't like people dropping by unannounced. Lately, he didn't like seeing people at all.

"Oh, my sincerest apologies. Am I interrupting your doing-nothing time?" Harris asked dryly.

"What do you want?" Brady asked. He wasn't in the mood for a lecture.

"Since you aren't returning your phone calls or emails, you left me the option of finding time away from an undercover operation so I could talk to you about something important."

Guilt mushroomed through him. Brady should have returned his family's phone calls, but he wasn't ready. He didn't want them—or anyone—to see him this way. Now he'd forced Harris temporarily off an undercover mission. He'd add that to his list of screw-ups. He shut off the television. "You're here. Say what you need to say." Whatever it was, Brady wasn't going to like it.

"Reilly is in trouble."

Brady hadn't expected that and he rose to his feet. The words lit a fire under him and for the first time in months, Brady had good motivation to get off his butt. "What trouble?"

"Reilly was the first responder on a murder scene and he's been accused of tampering with evidence," Harris said. "He's on administrative leave pending an investigation into the matter."

Reilly, the middle Truman brother, was a celebrated detective, his recent promotion a reward for the tough cases he'd solved. He would never compromise the integrity of an investigation by hiding or manufacturing evidence. "That's ridiculous. Why would he tamper with evidence? What idiot would believe something like that?" Brady asked. "The mayor believes it."

"The mayor?" Brady didn't like the pompous windbag who served as mayor of Denver, but since when did the mayor insert himself into police business?

" Since the mayor is in tight with Lieutenant General Ambrose, and it's his son who is the murder victim—"

Brady started. "Lieutenant General Ambrose? Justin's father? Justin's dead?" Confusion streamed through him. What about Susan? How was she dealing with her fiance's death?

"That's right, Justin Ambrose. Your favorite person," Harris said. "The mayor wants the guilty party found and he's decided the guilty persons are Susan and Reilly."

Brady's blood pressure soared and disbelief tumbled through him. Susan killing someone was more ludicrous than Reilly tampering with evidence. "The police will find the real culprit and then the mayor will look like the idiot he is and eat crow."

Harris snorted. "I'd agree if the lead investigator on the case wasn't a 'yes man' jockeying for a promotion and too lazy to do actual police work."

"It can't be that bad," Brady said.

Harris held out a folder. "It is. Look at the file."

Brady had respect for his brother's colleagues and had liked the ones he'd met, but every job had its share of incompetents. He opened the file and scanned Harris's notes. It was bad. "What can I do?"

Harris sniffed and then wrinkled his nose. "The first thing you can do is call Mom so she can stop worrying about you. Then you need to take a shower, grab a shave, change into clean clothes and rejoin the rest of the world. This place is a dump. Take some pride in yourself."

His brother's comments were justified. Brady felt and looked like crap. He hadn't had a reason to care. Until now.

"And once I re-civilize myself?" Brady asked, letting his voice drip with sarcasm.

Harris nodded at the folder he'd handed Brady. "Read that cover to cover. I've kept notes on the case, nothing you can't read in the news. Justin's yacht was found covered in his blood and Susan was the last person seen with him. She was at the scene with blood on her hands and clothes."

"What? She was where with what?" Incredulity and concern tore through him.

"Susan was on the boat. Justin's body hasn't been found. The ME states with the amount of blood at the scene, Justin couldn't have survived. The police are looking for a body."

Brady closed the file. "She didn't kill anyone." He didn't need to read reports about the case to know he was correct about that. "Was she with Justin when he died? How did she keep herself from being hurt?"

Harris blew out his breath. "Susan doesn't remember where she was and she can't explain what happened or why. She has no signs of a head injury or concussion, and the lab didn't find anything in her system that suggests she was drugged or sedated. She has no alibi for the night in question. I don't believe she killed him, but I can't offer any evidence or theory to the contrary. She hasn't been charged because Justin's body hasn't been found."

When Susan was under stress, she shut down. She'd dealt with terrible things from her childhood, like having an abusive alcoholic for a father and an imbalanced mother, by ignoring them and pretending as if nothing was wrong. As an adult, Susan's coping methods were better. She'd pour her emotions into her artwork, work through the problem and eventually talk about it, but her initial reaction was silence. The one sure way Brady had to get her talking was to get her into bed and let her direct the post-coital conversation. Whether it was the intimacy of the act or that she was relaxed and contented, Susan was most open with him during those times. But her old defense mechanism could be triggered if the situation was desperate enough.

No way would she hop into bed with him now. Not only had he lost his chance with Susan, she was grieving for her fiance. "Stress-induced amnesia?" Brady asked, wanting Harris's opinion.

"Could be. My best guess is that her inability to remember is psychological," Harris said.

"What makes the police think Reilly is tied up in this? Because he was first on the scene? Wasn't his partner there?" Brady asked, worry for his brother mingling with concern for Susan. Brady wanted to go to her, to see if she was okay, to talk to her and comfort her. Even as the thought crossed his mind, he squashed it. He was the last man she'd want to see or speak to. His presence would only make it worse for her.

"Reilly was first on the scene and when he realized it was Susan involved, he called for another team to investigate. He waited with Susan on the dock, while his partner waited at the marina for backup to arrive. He and Susan's friendship survived your relationship and she still does freelance sketch work for the department, so they've kept in touch."

Brady had met Susan through Reilly at a party. The image of Susan the first time he'd seen her snapped to mind. Her beautiful, shy smile had caught his attention. He'd approached her and found she was easy to talk with and eager to see the best in people and situations. Her positive attitude had been refreshing.

Harris continued, breaking through Brady's thoughts. "Once it got out that Reilly was first on the scene, Lieutenant General Ambrose talked to the media and his pal, the mayor, and connected them through you and painted the picture like something unseemly had occurred. The media loves tidbits about Reilly. He's a pseudo-celebrity after the cases he's solved for the city."

Not shocking. The media twisting a story into a lurid and seedy tale was common and nauseating. Brady was surprised anyone reacted to the sensationalism and irrationality of the story. The public could be riled into a frenzy with the right words, the right pictures and the right people pushing their buttons. Why didn't anyone stop to think about the idea of a detective—a decorated detective—leaving Susan, the alleged killer, at the scene of the crime with blood on her hands? If Reilly had wanted to cover up anything, he would have dealt with that first. The accusations were ridiculous.

How could he help? Susan wouldn't want to see him and Reilly was capable of defending himself. Sleuthing wasn't his area of expertise. However, if they needed someone to bungle the investigation at a critical moment, Brady had some experience with that. "I'm not a detective and I'm impaired at the moment. What do you want me to do?" Brady rubbed his knee.

Harris snorted. "Cut the crap and quit acting like a sissy stewing in your own tears. Your knee is fine. Get off your lazy rear end and talk to Susan. Work with her to find out what happened the night Justin was killed. Her memories might come back, but the stress she's under could be concealing something important."

Susan wouldn't withhold information if she had it. "Why can't you talk to Susan?" Harris was the one trained in FBI interview and profiling tactics.

"Two reasons. My career gives me a few more boundaries. I'm working an operation at the moment and I can't bail out or juggle both. Too much is at stake. Second reason, and more importantly, you know Susan better than I do. You can help her remember."

It had taken Brady time to earn Susan's trust and when they'd broken up, he was sure that trust had been demolished. "What makes you think Susan will talk to me about the murder?" Brady hadn't told his family the details of why their relationship had ended or about her visit to the hospital when he'd been a world-class jerk to her.

"You're a Truman. Your brother needs you. You'll do whatever is necessary to help Reilly."

Harris was right. The Trumans stood by each other. It was how they'd been raised. Integrity, honor and loyalty defined their family. This situation had to be killing Reilly and putting a strain on his marriage to Haley. They were a strong family and Brady felt like the weak link. Could he be useful in his current state? What if he made it worse for Susan and Reilly?

"Anything else?" Brady asked, shoving aside his self-pity. The idea of his brother suffering and having done nothing wrong had spurred him to act.

Harris hesitated. "There is one more thing. Reilly is worried about Susan. We don't know why she wasn't also a victim and why she didn't sustain physical injuries the night Justin died. Since the police have decided to focus on Susan as a suspect, they're not interested in providing her with police protection. Reilly believes there's more going on and Susan's not out of danger yet. While you're helping her sort this out, you need to look out for her."

Spending time with Susan had convoluted mess written all over it. He wasn't the soldier he'd been before his accident. His body was damaged and weakened, his confidence shaken. Was he capable of protecting her from a killer? What if she was attacked? Would he respond and protect her or hesitate and get her killed?

Then again, what choice did he have? His brothers needed him. So did Susan. Despite the ugly history, he would talk to her and do what he could to help.

The constant gnawing dread never let up. Susan Prescott clocked out of work, sliding her employee badge through the gallery's timekeeping system. It had been another horrendous day. She was leaving via the side entrance, hoping the reporters waiting to speak with her would remain in the front. She altered her route every day to avoid a confrontation.

Susan didn't have answers to the questions they asked. Why had she killed Justin? Where had she put the body? Why wouldn't she give closure to his family?

How did someone answer those questions? They were meant to bait her into saying something she'd regret. She didn't know anything about Justin's murder. She hadn't been involved. At least, she didn't think she had. Frustration worked at her. Why couldn't she remember?

Susan pushed open the side door. Reporters and cameramen snapped to attention and began shouting at her. A jolt of anxiety ripped through her. Susan focused on her car parked a few yards away, blinking back the tears that sprung to her eyes, a combination of sadness, humiliation and grief. Anything she said would make it worse, but she wanted to shout the only answer she knew, which was she didn't know anything.

A hand grasped her elbow and Susan pulled her arm free, spinning and coming face-to-face with Brady Truman. The last man she'd have expected outside the gallery. He looked disheveled and tired, not that she was in any position to judge. She was sure she looked worse. The aggravating thing about Brady was that even exhausted and unkempt, his charisma and good looks were undeniable. Every part of him tempted her.

It wasn't the time to fixate on Brady's tremendous appeal. Extending one muscular arm in front of them, he led her through the crowd, forming a path to her car. He took her keys from her hand, unlocked the doors and helped her into the passenger side. He climbed in the driver's seat, fastened his seat belt, held down the horn in warning to the media to move and drove them away from the gallery and the crowd.

Susan shook off her shock and confusion. "What are you doing here? You told me to leave you alone." She had tried to talk to him in the hospital. He hadn't been interested in hearing what she had to say.

"I need to talk to you."

A great read!
By CJK
Another great product from CJ Miller. It kept me interested from cover to cover, making it hard to put it down as the suspense never seemed to let up. The surprise twist at the end capped an already exciting story. I can not wait to find out more on the Truman family in the next book.

Drama, Action & romance
By Rhonda
Wow! Lots of drama, action, love scenes. Every time you think they are safe something else happens. I like Brady and his brothers. They want to do what is right. Help others.
Brady was in the military and now he is hurt. He can't go back. He is lucky that he can even walk again. He walks with pain, he is still going to physical therapy weekly. He keeps feeling sorry for himself, but when his brother the police detective is in trouble, His ex girlfriend is being questioned at the murder of her fiancé. Brady steps up to the plate to help them.
Susan does not remember what happen on Justin's yacht. She woke up with blood on her hands and no Justin. The first policeman on scene was Reily. He called for different officers when he realized who was missing.
Now someone is after Susan and the police think she is guilty. They don't believe she is in danger. Brady is stepping up to the plate to protect her. He knows she would not have done anything to Justin.
Brady hates Justin and Justin hated Brady back. Justin's dad is a three star and has a lot of power. He believes Susan is guilty of murdering his son.
The problems with the book is unanswered questions. How did they keep finding Brady and Susan so fast? What was Justin really up to? The questions just did not totally get answered to my liking.
I want to know more about Connor too?
Lots of action scenes, They were always running away from the bad guys. Car chases, fire. Everyone was looking for Susan and Brady including the police.
I would like to read more from C.J. Miller in the future.
I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of it by Netgalley.

Plenty of intrigue and unending danger
By A. Richard
Another Truman brother gets his own story in the second book by C.J. Miller, and the stakes are very high as physical threats seem to be around every turn. The emotional toll on the main couple is also great, as feelings remain conflicted throughout much of the story. Clues are tossed out, yet enough is left unknown to keep the reader from knowing the full truth until all is cleverly revealed. Unending danger and countless uncertainties lead to lots of suspense in SHIELDING THE SUSPECT.

His Special Forces career ended when he was shot by the enemy, and now Brady Truman spends his days going through therapy and thinking his life is basically over. When he hears his detective brother is in trouble because of his participation in a murder case, he knows the facts could not be right. Upon learning the chief suspect is his former girlfriend, Susan Prescott, he feels giving her his support is something he must do. Brady did not like the man to whom Susan was engaged, but he is certain there is no way she could have killed the man, despite being discovered on his boat surrounded by blood.

Since Susan cannot recall what actually took place the night of the murder, Brady knows getting her to remember is the only way to prove her innocence. When threats start occurring and ruthless mercenaries keep tracking them, they realize quickly uncovering the truth is the only way to remain alive. During their quest for answers, Brady and Susan must stay hidden together and he wonders if his injury will limit his ability to protect her. They try to disregard the longing neither has forgotten, because they must focus on exposing the real killer.

The unrelenting peril in SHIELDING THE SUSPECT makes for a thrilling suspenseful adventure. One never knows when trouble will strike, and these chaotic incidents are often deadly in an instant. Brady and Susan must face a huge number of dilemmas before all the necessary answers are eventually divulged, and their emotions become increasingly entangled as new information is found out. Although these two were once in a relationship, they still have much to learn about the other. From the moment they reunite, Susan has many misgivings as to why Brady is willing to aid her. This causes her to ponder about his motives time and again. His own doubts about his capabilities also have them discussing some weighty issues and doing much soul-searching. Their feelings for each other truly do run deep, and they are able to express them in a sexual manner much easier than speaking the words.

There is definitely no down time in the story since there are so many people after Brady and Susan. I never knew who would show up and really wanted to find out how they were locating them so rapidly. Several details caught me by surprise, and Ms. Miller certainly kept some facts secret for a long time, thus challenging me to think things through until all was finally told. A third Truman brother gets his personal book in the future, and what I already know of him makes me eager for more. SHIELDING THE SUSPECT has plenty of intrigue and emotionally demanding situations.

Many Shades of Red: State Policy and Collective AgricultureFrom Rowman & Littlefield Publishers

This volume provides a radical and timely corrective to received wisdom about the seemingly inevitable transition from communism to democratic capitalism. Arguing against popular misconceptions that portray collectivized agriculture as an unqualified failure that followed a monolithic Soviet model, the contributors draw upon newly available local sources to illuminate the costs, benefits, successes, and failures of cooperative agriculture. They highlight the wide variety of state policies, local responses, and economic outcomes, as well as the influence of local geography, political structures, and economic institutions in each region. Meurs provides an institutionalist analysis of both the causes and impacts of policy differences, drawing lessons of continuing relevance to the many countries in which agrarian reform remains a controversial issue.

The volume succeeds brilliantly in showing the diverse experiences with collective agriculture. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in agricultural policy, and for scholars and practitioners of rural development. (Eastern Economic Journal)

I found many interesting ideas and materials in this collection. (Frederic L. Pryor, Swarthmore College Slavic Review)

Interesting, but Incomplete and Dated by Now
By Loyd Eskildson
In "Many Shades of Red" author Meurs reviews agricultural collectivization in Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Hungary, and Russia, emphasizing China and Russia. Government encouragement of collectivization ranged from use of force to incentives, and results varied from massive starvation (estimated at 30 million in China, 3-5 million in Russia) to increased mechanization and improvement of rural living standards. With the exception of Bulgaria and China, collectivization took place in environs with vast expanses of property, extensive landlessness, and stagnated productivity. Meurs asserts that reanalysis is important because about 75% of the world's population still works in agriculture. Another concern is the possibly negative impact of Global Warming on overall agriculture.

Only about 8% of Russia is arable, and only a small portion of that is irrigated. Collectivization of peasant farms in Russia was a tragedy for many, costing 3-5 million their lives via starvation and executions. Surprisingly, however, many did not take advantage of the opportunity to leave when dissolution of the socialist system began - it remained the dominant form of production despite its failures. Meurs' explanation is based on lack of rural processing and marketing services, and fear families would lose eligibility for farm subsidies and social services provided by local collective farms. The solution was to reorganize those farms as corporations and turn them over to the workers and pensioners.

Prior to 1917 Russian agriculture was irrefutably backward. About one-third of the land was owned by landlords, the Tsar's family, the church, and the state. Over half of that was rented to peasants, and manual labor and private consumption of the output dominated. American farmers at the time were almost 5X as productive. A significant portion of Russian farm output was claimed by the state, landlords, and moneylenders. Demand for liquidation of private land ownership became the most important slogan of the 1917 Revolution, and was accomplished soon afterwards.

Ten years later, cooperatives comprised no more than 2% of cultivated land. There were 24-25 million peasant farms, averaging 4-5 hectares (about 10 acres), with 1 horse and two cows. The most prosperous 3-4% had about one-third the total machinery. Kulaks (affluent peasants - about 4%) charged 100% interest for loans to poorer farmers during the 4-5 months until harvest. Renting horses brought their claims to 1/3 of the harvest, 1/2 when equipment was also included. By 1929, state-provided consumer co-ops provided consumer goods at wholesales prices, and also provided credit and marketing channels.

Mandatory collectivization of the land emerged in response to the government's problems extracting steep grain levies to support its industrialization. Farmers frequently responded with 'terrorism' against collecting agents and agencies, with government retribution usually following. Production fell because of the resistance, in turn generating greater repression. A 1928 famine dramatically reduced livestock numbers; thirty years was required to return to those 1928 levels. Private plots represented only 3% of total sown area in the 1980s, but produced over 25% of output. Farmers were paid the same regardless of productivity.

The breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 again dropped livestock numbers by one-half, and the area planted to grains fell 25%. Yields fell further because fertilizer use also fell. Production is now recovering, though still far below 1990 levels. Individual farms now produce 59% of agricultural output on 20% of the land. Farmers have difficulty obtaining loans because of restrictions against non-agricultural use of land currently farmed; laws only allow land sales by the state.

China followed a remarkably similar path to collectivization. Independent family farms had been the tradition in China for thousands of years prior to the communist takeover in 1949. Farmlands were small, fragmented, and nearly half owned by landlords and leased to peasants. Rent was often 50% of the output. Under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) land was confiscated from landlords without compensation and distributed to tenants. Originally collectivization was voluntary, but encouraged. Productivity, however, lagged Taiwan, Singapore, and Korea. After 1955 it was mandatory, and grain output increased 22% from 1952 to 1958. This encouraged larger collectivization units, and at the end of 1958, 99% of rural households were in communes, averaging 5,000 households, and 10,000 acres. The envisioned productivity improvements (less fragmentation, more mechanization) would allow freed-up labor to improve irrigation and build dams. At the time, agriculture contributed about 60% of China's foreign exchange earnings. Increased output would be used as capital to acquire an industrial base - ironically with help from Russia.

However, gross agricultural output fell 15% in 1959, another 16% in 1960, and then stayed there for another year. Thirty million died as a result. "Many Shades of Red" attributes the main cause to bad weather; other sources also name major management mistakes - over-seeding crops (crowding reduced yield), a campaign to drive away and kill sparrows because they ate grain (insects flourished), deep plowing (buried the topsoil), taking moderately productive land out of production to concentrate fertilize on the most productive, diversion of many agricultural workers to steel production during harvesting (crops rotted in the fields), melting down essential farm tools to feed backyard iron furnaces, continuation of massive grain exports, and a substantial reduction in incentives to work also contributed to the shortage of food.

Production management was then refocused on smaller teams of 20-30 households, prices paid farmers raised 28%, priority emphasis returned to agriculture, new dwarf varieties of rice and wheat introduced, mechanization increased, and engine-powered irrigation expanded. Most studies, however, show that production continued to decline until decollectivization in 1978. After Deng Xiaoping became leader in 1978, Xiaogang village provided the demonstration project that quickly ended collectivization - 18 farmers secretly broke up their commune land and other assets in 1978 into private segments, and quickly prospered; previously their families had been reduced to begging.

Even greater increases began in 1984 when households were also allowed to sell above-quota production at market rates. Wheat production, for example, peaked in 1997 (123 million tons), vs. 13.8 in 1949, 14.2 in 1961, and 62.7 in 1979. Rice peaked the same year at 192 million tons, vs. 48.6 in 1949, 53.6 in 1961, and 143.8 in 1979. (U.S.D.A. China - National Results) Productivity improvement (eg. via mechanization, plot consolidation and co-location), as best I can determine, is not a current priority for China as it would simply increase unemployment. ("Status of China's Agricultural Enterprise Management and Countermeasures," 6/1/2009)

Collective agriculture proved efficient at extracting resources from peasants because it took away their control of resources. This did not, however, necessarily translate into extracting more resources from agriculture. Production in both Russia and China declined due to destruction of incentives, as well as in the case of China, poor management directives. Using agriculture as a 'cash cow' (underpaid workers) in both Russia and China further reduced incentives. Meurs believes that collectivization should improve productivity in instances where plots are too fragmented to support mechanization - however, his China data do not support this, and it is not clear what caused production in Russia to drop when decollectivized - probably part of the general economic collapse caused by the 'shock treatment' of suddenly ending subsidies.

Fantastic Book!
By Kevin Locke
After just the first chapter, I can see this book is going to affect my life deeply.... as now I am reading slowly, the pages on morphic fields.... I am not going to rush through this book.... I am going to savor it and reflect on the INCREDIBLE synchronicities happening in my life right now..... this work by Carolyn is really amazing....

I especially love Carolyns sense of humor, and candidness.... she is soooo heartwarming, and real. Its one of the best qualities I think.... the real, humorous, serious, genius of Carolyn Elliott.

In my opinion, this book is a great read, and a practical approach to becoming more of an active Genius!

Deep and Concrete
By Emma Jones
I bought this book on a whim after reading a piece by the author on the internet. I needed to be inspired. As it turned out, the book weaves together many themes that had recently become prevalent in my life - lucky me! A notable virtue of the book is the way the author describes her own process and gives examples; I think it helps the reader feel more fearless and open to experimentation - which is what anyone needs when trying to tap into their creativity. I also very much appreciate the concrete exercises and advice for connecting to one's inner vision and experiencing the world like the fabric of a dream or a myth, dense with meaning and symbolism. All this is carried along by the jubilant and decisive tone.

I would recommend the book to open-minded, positive people who are looking for new models for making meaning and want to commit to taking risks and being with whatever arises when delving under the surface of life!

Runaway Horses: The Sea of Fertility, 2 (Vintage International), by Yukio Mishima

Yukio Mishima’s Runaway Horses is the second novel in his masterful tetralogy, The Sea of Fertility. Again we encounter Shigekuni Honda, who narrates this epic tale of what he believes are the successive reincarnations of his childhood friend Kiyoaki Matsugae.

In 1932, Shigeuki Honda has become a judge in Osaka.  Convinced that a young rightist revolutionary, Isao, is the reincarnation of his friend Kiyoaki, Honda commits himself to saving the youth from an untimely death. Isao, driven to patriotic fanaticism by a father who instilled in him the ethos of the ancient samurai, organizes a violent plot against the new industrialists who he believes are usurping the Emperor’s rightful power and threatening the very integrity of the nation. Runaway Horses is the chronicle of a conspiracy — a novel about the roots and nature of Japanese fanaticism in the years that led to war.

A brilliant masterpiece on its own...
By cheguevara
The Runaway Horse has been criticized unfairly for its glorification of nationalistic and even fascist views. The word Kamikaze has become such a taboo in the modern western world that anything that touches even slightly on the subject would be condemned.
In this amazing book, Isao symbolizes the purity of life. All that's good is pure, and all that's pure is good. Thus is the belief of Isao, and eventually, of Mishima himself as evident of his suicide in 1970. Having said that, I do not expect this book to be understood by its English readers. The translation proves to be a great barrier but more importantly, the philosophy that is the core of this particular book is too distant for the modern Japanese readers, let alone readers in North America who have been sheltered from different cultures.
Runaway Horse describes meaning of the true Japanese samurai, or at least of what Mishima believes it is. A samurai is not after his own glory or achievements. His only goal is to be loyal to the Emperor and to God. He is a mere servant of these goals and his life could and should be given up to the Emperor upon request. Isao believes that the blade and the blood of the corrupt politicians will be a wake-up call to the Emperor to restore feudal Japan. Although naive and violent at times, Isao is a one-dimensional human being that follows the human goal of "being yourself", Being true to yourself is an impossible task for most people, and therefore Isao is the idealized human being. It also reflects the Japanese philosophy of simplicity. The problems of the modern day world are so complex that only the simplest actions would resolve them, complex actions would not only take time to execute, but would entangle the matters even more.
This book also displays the obsession with beauty that Mishima has. In his mind, beauty is worth giving up your life for. His ideas of beauty are expressed with the most sensuous and colorful images shaped by adjective upon adjectives. Mishima's writing style, especially when it involves this matter, is not for everyone. Patient readers with deep imaginations, though, will find it joyful as descriptions from the book spring from the wells of their minds and take flight before their eyes. Isao's suicide is a painting that has been painted a thousand times in my mind, along with the rising sun.

"When the time comes for me to turn my sword against myself, lilies will surely rise from the morning dew and open their petals"
By Mary Whipple
(4.5 stars) Runaway Horses (1969), the second in the Sea of Fertility tetralogy, continues the characters introduced in Spring Snow into 1932 - 1933, a time in which Japan is beset with enormous internal problems - the economy and rural poverty, the corruption of politicians, the rise of communism, the cutbacks in the army, and in foreign affairs. Many incidents of political violence have taken place, including the assassination of the Finance Minister, and on May 15, 1932, the assassination of Prime Minister Inukai himself, by eleven Navy officers.

As the novel opens, Shigekuni Honda, a main character in Spring Snow, now a judge in the Osaka Court of Appeals, has reached the age of thirty-eight, a man leading a quiet life of reason who believes that his youth ended with the death of his friend Kiyoaki Matsugae, eighteen years ago. When he is asked to substitute for his Chief Justice at a kendo exhibition in Nara, some distance away, he accepts. The star of the exhibition is young Isao Iinuma, the nineteen-year-old son of Kiyoaki's tutor during their childhood. Later, after climbing Mount Miwa, Honda performs a purification ritual in a waterfall and sees, once again, young Isao. This time he is stunned to notice a pattern of three moles under Isao's arm. His friend Kiyoaki had exactly the same pattern of moles, and had insisted on his deathbed that "I will see you again." Honda, who has always grounded his life in reason, now believes that Isao is the confident samurai reincarnation of Kiyoaki.

At the Saigusa Festival of Wild Lilies, Isao gives Honda a copy of a book which is a prized possession: The League of the Divine Wind, by Yamao Tsunenori, which rails against making Japan a republic and insists that all foreign influences be eliminated from Japan. (The Japanese word for "Divine Wind" is "kamikaze.") Long passages which go back to the early parts of the Meiji dynasty, set the scene for the action to follow as Isao, dedicating his life to the pure samurai tradition, establishes a group of other young men who plan executions of those in public life who have violated the code.

Rich descriptions of nature, including a section in which a white camellia is personified, accompany the developing action, and some nature scenes of obvious symbolism add to the dilemma faced by Honda as he remembers dreams which Kiyoaki has recorded in his diary and left for Honda as a legacy. And as Isao begins to plan for what is the climax of this novel, one can see the author preparing the way for new understandings. Mishima succeeds in giving voice to points of view that would otherwise have been totally alien to me. By explaining the samurai code within the context of Japanese history and culture, and using characters of different beliefs whom I liked and respected, he was able to explain what lay behind the ritual suicide he himself committed shortly after completion of the tetralogy. Though the book is sometimes propagandistic and deals almost exclusively with men and their behavior, Mishima is a novelist who is in complete control of his subject matter, and his thematic transition between the 1912 and the 1932 periods is flawless. The Sea of Fertility has always been regarded as his masterpiece, and readers interested in Japan will not want to miss this novel. Mary Whipple

Mishima-----a master craftsman.
By A Customer
Mishima is undoubtedly a fine writer. His technique and style are amazing. He can even make a two page description of kimono fabric interesting to an NFL linebacker! Many will certainly question the motivation of his writing (a return to samurai codes [Bushido], restoration of emperor, expelling all things western from Japan, etc.), but they cannot deny the accurate portrait Mishima paints of a mid-20th century Japan that is straddling the lines between traditional culture (buddhism/shinto/etc.) and western industrialization. Mishima takes a grand-scale problem and puts it into a specific setting. Obviously readers that have an understanding of the greater context of Japanese history from the mid-20th century will appreciate this novel more. I do think, however, that even someone that couldn't point to Japan on a map, but likes good writing and story-telling will be able to appreciate the book on those merits alone. While not as enjoyable as the first installment of the "Sea of Fertility" tetrology, it is an enjoyable book.

Big things come in small packages!
By M. Sweetz
Jazz Arranging by Norman David is a superb little book, I'm amazed it doesn't appear in arranging book lists more often. I recently read 'Modern Jazz Voicings' by Ted Pease and Ken Pullig, and 'Arranging for Large Jazz Ensemble' by Ken Pullig and Dick Lowell, and as fabulous as those two books are, I'd say this book belongs up there at the top with them.

The exercises give you immediate hands-on experience with scoring and transposition for various instruments, and it explains the various concepts and techniques in a clear and logical fashion. It starts with your usual description of each instrument, ranges, etc. Then, it covers writing for the rhythm section, two-part writing, 3/4/5-part writing, special voicings (fourths, USTs, clusters and spreads), and expanded methods (such as line-writing). It ends with two chapters on large ensemble writing and big-band writing. The exercises closing each chapter are very rewarding, and if you're feeling diligent, you can breeze through this book in no time.

Of course, a prior knowledge of jazz harmony is recommended, which can easily be obtained from excellent books such as 'The Jazz Language' by Dan Haerle, 'Jazz Theory and Practice' by Lawn/Hellmer, or 'The Jazz Theory Book' by Mark Levine. If you know the basics, however, you should make this one of the first arranging books you purchase!

The "Single Greatest Text on Arrangment Available Anywhere"!
By M. Pachelli
Dr. Norman David has created a work of pure intellectual genius. This text on Jazz arrangement will serve as the high-water mark with which all future discussions on the subject will be judged. Professor David has an extensive resume of musical accomplishment that would make even the most highly regarded player cringe with envy. It is this experiential knowledge that shines through in this comprehensive guide. There is no other work as complete and well organized, with the intent to impart practical knowledge for the professional, as is this book by Dr. Norman David. I not only recommend this book on arranging, but consider it dogmatic for those that seek to become true professional musicians.

Great book for instrumentation
By Greg Michaels
I am the proud owner for around a dozen arranging textbooks. Though this isn't my first choice, it is a nice little book, and makes for a good reference guide. I particularly like the instrumentation section of the book.

The follow-on to the best-selling That's Not in My American History Book explains in everyday language both the ordinary and the bizarre technological marvels that we take for granted and the laws of nature that serve as the baseline for life on earth. Beginning with clear, concise, and entertaining descriptions of the important discoveries that form the basis of our scientific knowledge—-Newtonian mechanics, Einstein's theory of relativity, evolution, and germ theory, to name a few—-the book goes on to tell scientific stories that "are lost between the pages." These include the discovery of the periodic table of elements (and why it matters), the development of miracle drugs such as aspirin and penicillin, the invention of television, the prospects for earthquake prediction, and the genesis of the Internet.
Whether it's a fascinating anecdote about the role of zebrafish as stand-in patients for humans or the history of the computer, That's Not in My Science Book will prove to be an engaging read for armchair scientists and students alike.

I didn't know that!
By Evelyn
This is the first science book I've read that I actually understood. Thanks to Ms. Kelly's clear writing, leavened when appropriate with a welcome sense of humor, readers will understand a host of scientific topics. She provides valuable, comprehensible explanations of global warming and avian flu. This is a book perfect for the entire family to read and discuss.

Yes, it is in my science book
By Anthony
Actually, quite a lot of what's in this book *was* in my science books, and much of the rest shouldn't be. The book has interesting snippets of popular science treated somewhat better than they would be in a newspaper or general-interest magazine. There's also some interesting biographical information, and a bunch of exhortation to follow the dictates of the environmental movement with none of the scientific and economic dissent against those dictates presented. It's somewhat interesting reading, especially for the popular science bits, but one of the weaker books in the genre.

Sherman Alexie is, by many accounts, the most widely read American Indian writer in the United States and likely in the world.  A literary polymath, Alexie's nineteen published books span a variety of genres and include his most recent National Book Award-winning The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Now, for the first time, a volume of critical essays is devoted to Alexie's work both in print and on the big screen.  Editors Jeff Berglund and Jan Roush have assembled twelve leading scholars of American Indian literature to provide new perspectives on a writer with his finger on the pulse of America.

Interdisciplinary in their approach to Alexie's work, these essays cover the writer's entire career, and are insightful and accessible to scholars and lay readers alike.  This volume is a worthy companion to the work of one of our nations's most recognized contemporary voices.

Review

"The bar is raised. I believe this work will be seen as a role model for literary criticism of Native American fiction, poetry, and film."—Simon Ortiz, poet and professor of English at Arizona State University

"An important and timely work.... This volume sets a high standard of scholarship for those committed to grappling with the broader complexities of Alexie's life and work. The collaborative tenor of the project is particularly refreshing, because it invites scholars to converse across disciplines in order to keep pace with an iconic writer whose literary reputation now extends far beyond the Pacific Northwest."—Pacific Northwest Quarterly

"An exciting addition to the growing body of scholarship on Sherman Alexie's work. The extensive bibliography of work by and about Alexie that appears at the end of this collection alone makes this book an invaluable resource for scholars and future scholars of Alexie's work."—Studies in American Indian Literatures

Someone was out to get Thomas Casey. His profession had taught him to trust no one. So when Johara di Rossi abducted him on his way to his beloved niece's wedding, Thomas assumed the worst—despite their intimate history.

Though attachments made him vulnerable, Thomas was haunted by regret for walking away from Jo years ago. No other woman had stirred such intense desire in him. Now, snowbound in an isolated cabin, with a determined enemy from his past closing in, suspicion begins to melt away as the embers of their passion reignite.

Denver International Airport, Thursday, October 16, 3:21 p.m.

"I don't know how the pilot managed, but we landed safely." Thomas Casey relaxed his grip on his cell phone and drew in his first deep breath since the pilot had announced a sudden winter storm had hit Denver only minutes before their scheduled landing. The storm had descended rapidly and with the same ferocity as the Bronco Blizzard from another mid-October day a few decades ago.

According to the weather update Thomas had caught on a local newscast since his flight arrived, the forecast called for at least a foot of snow in the coming twenty-four hours. The temperature had dropped dramatically in the past hour, icing the streets of the city and threatening to shut down every form of transportation.

"Any chance you're getting out of there this afternoon?" Lucas Camp, Thomas's longtime friend and colleague, asked, hope in his tone.

As soon as he'd gotten off that damned plane, Thomas had put through a call to Lucas. His old friend and his wife, Victoria Colby-Camp, were already ensconced in the small village resort where the wedding would take place.

Despite being a twenty-year veteran of black ops, Thomas felt his knees weaken just a little. He'd never been married nor had children of his own. Casey Manning, his niece, was like a daughter to him. When she'd asked him to give her away at her wedding, he'd choked up so damned bad he could scarcely cough out an answer. Casey was his sister, Cecelia's, only child. Cecelia's husband had passed away suddenly just a year ago. Standing in was the least Thomas could do.

If he could get out of this damned airport.

"It'll take a hell of a lot more than a little snow to keep me away from that wedding," Thomas promised. "You tell my niece I'll be there."

The village was only two hours from Denver, half the distance from here to Aspen. He'd crawled across deserts in the Middle East and scaled mountains in the dead of winter in Eastern Europe. How hard could it be to manage a hundred or so snow-covered miles in Colorado?

"The rehearsal dinner isn't until tomorrow night," Lucas reminded him. "Tonight's reception is just a casual affair. Stay in the city until morning if the roads are too hazardous for safe travel."

Thomas grinned. "I think you're getting soft, Lucas." The next thing he'd be telling Thomas was to be sure to wear his seat belt—which he did anyway. "Ordinarily you'd be suggesting I find myself a pair of cross-country skis and hoof it on over to your location."

A belly laugh boomed across the connection. "I can see you've never been a member of a wedding party, old friend. Once wedding plans are in place, God help the unfortunate soul who throws a wrench in the works. The sweetest young woman will become bridezilla in a heartbeat. I'm not worried about you, Thomas. It's those of us already here with the bride-to-be who have to worry."

"I'll be there, Lucas." Thomas ended the call and tucked his cell into his pocket. He picked up his carry-on and followed the signs to the lower level and ground transportation.

Johara DeRossi's heart was still lodged in her throat. The way the storm had dropped on the city, she'd been convinced Thomas Casey's plane would ice up and tumble to the runway like a radio-controlled toy with no battery life. While that might have put a convenient end to her task here, it wasn't at all how Thomas Casey should leave this world.

The enigmatic director of Mission Recovery owed his country an explanation—her, too, if she was being honest. But her questions were not the priority.

Having disguised herself as one of the many flight attendants from a nearby airline milling about deciding how and where to wait out the storm, she'd cloned his cell phone. Now, listening in on her target's phone call, she silently thanked Lucas Camp for helping her cause. If the wedding party wasn't expecting him to arrive until tomorrow, she had a head start.

As Thomas left the gate area for the lower levels, she trailed at a respectable distance, but kept him in sight. He couldn't be crazy enough to try to pick up his rental car in this weather. She had to presume he'd call a hotel for availability and then pick up a ride on a courtesy shuttle.

It really didn't matter. He wasn't going to make it that far anyway.

What did matter was that her window of opportunity was closing fast, the already tight schedule accelerated by the storm. Good thing she thrived on pressure or she'd need serious medication about now.

As a member of the Initiative committee, the small group charged with the oversight of ultra-covert teams like Casey's Mission Recovery Specialists, her life was rarely dull.

When his name had crossed her desk, along with the report listing the privileged information that had roused the suspicions against him, she had immediate and mixed reactions.

She didn't want to believe it. Men weren't built any more dedicated or patriotic than Thomas Casey. The idea that he may be guilty of treason—or worse—made her stomach churn. As an investigator, she knew better than to prejudge an operative or a situation, but Thomas was different. She didn't want to go digging into his past, but more important, she didn't want anyone else digging into it.

On some level she recognized just how screwed up that was.

Be that as it may, having served with him on a mission near the time period in question, she was eminently qualified. With that in mind, she'd checked his schedule and counted it good fortune that she would be able to deal with this away from the prying eyes in Washington, D.C.

She walked by him as Thomas paused near the rental car lines and pulled out his phone. Listening in again, she was pleased by his predictable behavior as he made his first call to a nearby hotel. Smart man, she thought, as he booked the room without blinking at the storm-inflated price. The hotel clerk promised the next shuttle would be at the appropriately marked stand within ten minutes.

Adjusting her timetable for the shuttle and the road conditions, Jo started for the parking garage. It took all her control not to skid to a stop when she spotted another familiar face among so many strangers.

Specialist Jason Grant, one of Thomas Casey's rising stars, was coming down the escalator. Though his eyes were shadowed by dark glasses, she knew his gaze was sweeping the crowd.

Damn it. She'd checked the itineraries for all of Thomas's team over the next week. Grant wasn't slated to attend the wedding. According to her information, he should have been working recon on a new case in Vegas. With one conversation, he could ruin her plans for a clean capture. She had only seconds to head him off.

Well, that's what plan B was for, she mused. Jo popped open one more button on her blouse and rushed back toward Thomas. "Excuse me, sir? Seat A2, right?"

His brow puckered and she knew he was trying to place her from the airplane. "I worked coach," she explained. "But I spotted this in your seat on my way out."

She flashed an overly bright smile and handed him a passport. "That's you, right?"

He opened it and, startled, gazed up at her. "Who are you?"

"You know me," she murmured, leaning closer. "Thomas." His eyes went wide as he recognized her voice under the disguise.

"I need you." The words were out, full of more truth than she cared to admit regarding their past, present and quite possibly their immediate future.

He nodded once, all business, and fell in beside her as she headed toward an employee access. She refused to look back, though she could feel Grant closing in as the door locked behind them.

"This way."

"Tell me what's going on, Jo."

She ignored the ripple of awareness that followed his using her given name. It wasn't the reaction she'd expected. Thomas always treated everyone with efficient professionalism. Except for that one notable, extremely personal, incident years ago.

"I'll tell you everything just as soon as we're out of here." She checked her watch. They had less than five minutes before the cabbie she'd paid to wait left in search of another fare. In this weather they'd never find another taxi. "Keep up. We have to get out of the area before the roads are closed." She'd taken precautions, given herself options, but no one could prepare for a freak blizzard.

"Are you in trouble?"

"Yes." On one too many levels, she realized. But it was too late to back out now. If she didn't follow through, someone more objective would take over the investigation. Based on what she'd seen, she didn't think that was a good idea.

Moving forward, she hoped some deep-seated instinct kicked in, making him curious enough to cooperate with her. Grant wasn't just one of his Specialists, he was the best of the current crop. He'd been tagged to replace Deputy Director Holt, the man who held the position in which Lucas Camp had once served, when the deputy eventually moved up to replace Thomas.

The Initiative committee had approved the plan. Right now, she wondered what the hell they'd been thinking.

"Jo, wait."

Would the day ever come when his voice didn't create that shiver of anticipation? "No time."

"I need an explanation."

"And I'll give you one when we're away from the airport."

"Jo." He caught her arm, forced her to stop and really look at him.

Airport employees passed by, moving to and from their respective duties with various degrees of interest in their obviously strained interaction. She made mental notes, knew he was doing the same. Always an eye out for the next threat.

"A particular German mission file crossed my desk last week."

"I see."

She fingered the disk in her pocket. Loaded with enough sedative to guarantee his cooperation, she hesitated to use it. And she knew without reservation that she would get only one chance. "This was the only time we could talk safely." Or so she'd thought.

"I've booked a hotel room," he said. "We can talk there."

"Fine." Better if he believed she'd willingly compromise. "I have a cab waiting."

At last he fell into step beside her once more, giving her hope this would go well. It almost felt like old times. Almost.

Back then she thought they'd been on the same page, working together toward a common goal. After five years apart on diverging career paths, after reading through so many reports of success from his Specialists who routinely went above and beyond mission parameters, she wasn't sure they could ever be on the same page again.

She might be sure he wasn't a traitor, she just wasn't so sure anymore that she was in the same league as the man behind the stoic, black ops armor.

Chapter Two

Mission Recovery Specialist Jason Grant had successfully shadowed Agent DeRossi to Denver, Colorado. On her tail for several days, he knew the hotel she'd been staying in wasn't within government per diem limits and, thanks to the GPS tag he'd put on her rental, he'd learned she liked to shop in ritzy boutiques.

For as long as he'd been tracking her, he hadn't recognized any of her contacts. If Deputy Director Holt hadn't sent him out here personally, he might think this was a wild goose chase. As it was, he was starting to question the rumor claiming she was here on a Mission Recovery witch hunt. Didn't look that way to him.

Her return to the airport in a flight attendant uniform piqued his curiosity. He hoped whoever she was here to meet appreciated her effort. She looked pretty damned hot.

He'd followed her through the terminal, but if she'd made contact with anyone, it had been too subtle for him to catch. As a well-trained and experienced member of Mission Recovery, getting something by him was highly unlikely and the thought that she'd managed it made him nervous. And definitely ticked him off.

Beyond the windows of the airport, the storm rolled down from the mountains like an avalanche, blanketing the city with snow and ice. He didn't care for the idea of being stuck in an airport with thousands of stranded travelers, so it was a relief when DeRossi finally started to move. Until he lost her.

Her curly blond wig was gone. The bright red blazer of the airline she'd falsely represented was absent from the crowd of travelers milling about. He cursed his arrogance. His boss had warned him she was top of the game, but Jason hadn't been concerned. The woman had been riding a desk for more than three years. However sharp she had once been, she couldn't be on the top of her game these days.

His gaze continued to roam the crowd. She hadn't been that far ahead of him. He tucked himself into a place at the end of the escalators where he could keep an eye on the restrooms as well as the main path to baggage claim.

He gave it three long minutes before he admitted the truth. She'd gotten away. Because she'd spotted him or because she'd completed whatever she'd been sent to do here?

He dialed Deputy Director Holt but the call went straight to voice mail. Probably for the best. Reporting a screw-up like losing the target was way, way low on the list of his favorite activities.

Other than telling him to watch her and report her activities, no one had really briefed him on the real reason why DeRossi was in Colorado at the same time as Director Casey. Having her in the airport at the time of his arrival had to be more than coincidence, but so far as he'd been able to observe she hadn't made contact.

He'd never met a field agent who liked oversight divisions—whether it was the Internal Affairs divisions of police departments or the covert equivalent of the Initiative committee.

An airport security cart whizzed by and Jason decided it was time to get creative. If he could get into the security office, maybe he'd get lucky and spot her on one of the many video feeds they monitored.

He considered fabricating an elaborate story and settled on a lower-risk version of the truth. Following the cart to the nearest security team office, he walked in, credentials ready.

"Can I help you?"

Jason flipped open the wallet with a badge and ID card as he surveyed the entire space. The security office setup was familiar. One uniformed person at the desk, a couple of others in offices that overlooked the small reception area. He glanced at the one closed door and assumed that was where all the real information was hidden.

"Good afternoon." He smiled, throwing in a little charm since the uniform was female. "I'm Agent Grant. I was tailing a suspect and she managed to ditch me at baggage claim," he said with just the right blend of irritation and embarrassment. It was a skill he'd picked up during his time in law enforcement.

"I need a look at your cameras, see if I can spot her. Consider it a professional courtesy," he added. "I really don't want to have to hear about this mistake for the rest of my life, if I can avoid it."

She smiled just a little and made a call to her immediate superior. Feeling the eyes on him, he let his shoulders slump as he tucked his badge away, playing the part of the guy who was having a bad day.

It worked. She hung up the phone and walked him over to the closed door.

Two men in airport security uniforms watched the cycling views of the area from the escalators to the exit doors on the wide bank of monitors. Reading the labels under each, he soon had a feel for each area covered by the closed-circuit cameras.

Public areas, employee-only access and the walkways and streets just outside the terminal. Where was she? She wasn't loitering in baggage claim. Not in the rental car line either.

"Who are you looking for?"

"Flight attendant. Female. Blonde. In a red blazer." And with less than a minute a good operative could have changed any one of those distinguishing features. He'd given her three minutes plus the time it had taken him to get in here.

DeRossi was an oversight agent. Hadn't pushed anything more dangerous than paper in a couple of years. He wanted to bang his head against the wall for underestimating her. No one working any aspect of covert ops got hired or moved up the food chain by accident.

Still. She'd shown no sign of spotting him tailing her and it wasn't entirely unreasonable to believe her field skills would be rusty.

"Hot?" one of the guards asked.

"Aren't they all?" Grant mused.

"Sure," the guard admitted with a smirk. "But a few stand out. Let me cue this for you."

Jason waited the few seconds, let the guard zoom in. "Yeah, that's her," he said, stopping just shy of a fist pump. DeRossi strolled down an employee access hall with a businessman at her side. There was a brief conversation, then they moved again, out of the camera's view. "Where did she go?"

"Got her," the other guard said. "She went into a cab with the dude."

Fast Paced Romantic Suspense Thriller
By julie whiteley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Bridal Armor is a Harlequin Intrigue publication and released in August 2013. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the DRC of this book. Jo and Thomas had a personal and professional history together. But, their relationship in both instances had ended a while back. But, neither of them had fully gotten over each other. Now Jo is in the unfortunate position of having to investigate Thomas. It is believed that Thomas is selling a biological weapon in the form of a virus to the enemy. Jo just can not believe Thomas is capable of anything like that and is convinced he is being set up. So, she pretends to be going along with the investigation, but is really trying to figure out who might be framing Thomas. In the meantime, Thomas is set to give way his niece at her wedding in Colorado. When he gets to Denver, a snow storm blows in that makes it impossible to get to the rehearsal in time. But, the shocker is meeting up with Jo at the airport and a car explosion that gets his full attention and has him and Jo on the run. Thomas is convinced that an old enemy is out for revenge against him and is the responsible party in setting him up. But, he doesn't trust Jo right away. She is after all there to prove him guilty of treason. But, the chain of events that unfolds in the next 24 hours, has Thomas realizing in the twilight of his career, what is really important in life. He has many regrets about placing his family and Jo in the background, but maybe there is still time to make up for lost time.... If they make out of Colorado alive. This is a really fast paced romantic suspense novel. We are dealing with an organization that is not even mentioned in government, it's so clandestine. Bio terrorism is a scary thought, I would rather not dwell on too long. The prospect of this being dealt with on some level as we speak is a sobering thought. Two people that had a strong working relationship that developed into a sexual relationship, then a deeper emotion, come together after a long time. The sad thing was that Thomas questioned Jo when it was obvious she still carried a torch for him and was putting her career on the line to save his butt. But, Thomas finds out right quick that Jo is his ally and the two of them and the entire world are at risk if the virus gets out. I really enjoyed this one. The only thing I felt was left out, was more information about the agency they worked for. Perhaps, in future installments we will learn more about it. Overall, this is a B+.

Suspenseful
By Rhonda
I liked it but felt like the ending was rushed. I think it needed to be longer or something. It had a lot of different familar characters and some I had not read about. Lots of drama, action. romance and snow. Their is also a bomber on the loose and a Russian
attack helicopter in Colorado.

For most of the book you are not totally sure who to trust. Who is setting up who? In fact I still am wondering parts of it.
Thomas Casey niece is getting married. He is giving the bride away. Most of the guests are working for CIA, Specialists or for the Colby Agency. So security is tight and everything should be okay for the wedding. They have rented out the whole hotel for it.

When Thomas lands in Denver just beating a big snow storm that no one saw coming. He is met by Johara di Rossi a agent he worked with and got close years ago. She asks him to come with her. When they get to the car Thomas had rented it blew up. His quick reaction saved them.

They got in Jo's car and away they thought from the enemy. Every time you think they were safe something else happened. Jo saw one agent follow her and thought he might be responsible for it. Thomas trusts that agent that she saw at the airport.

Grant assignment was to follow Jo around and see what she is up too and report to the assistant director who was in charge while Thomas was on vacation. He thought it would be easy since she has been on a desk for the past 4 years. He lost her. He did find out that the car that was bombed was his director. Now he was missing too.

Everyone is worried when Thomas does not show up on time first because of snow. Then all calls go direct to voice mail. He has missed checks in. That is not normal.

Their are a few love scenes that I skipped over. If you have read most of the Colby Agency: Specialists than you would be glad to see all the characters from previous books. I have read some and know some of the back stories but their are a lot of them that I have missed.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it by Netgalley and Harlequin.

Highly Recommended - Great Series
By M. Rondeau
Over the years as the director of Mission Recovery Thomas Casey had made enemies - now someone was trying to take him down both professionally and permanently. When Johara de Rossi an Initiative Committee member who oversees government shadow operations turned up at the airport as he arrived for his nieces wedding, Thomas assumed the worst in spite of their intimate history. If he had regrets this late in his career, it was that he had let Johara go so many years before. With an enemy determined to take him out, Thomas and Johara would brave snowstorms, dodge bullets, and come to terms with a passion their enforced closeness was re-igniting.

*** Webb has both a distinct style and the talent to write heart-throbbing, fast paced action with unique plot lines combined with romantic undertones that intensify the precarious and dangerous situations she dumps her leads into. In BRIDAL ARMOR the dangerous situations and the reawakened passions of her leads made this another of this authors intensely popular storylines within her Colby Agency series.

Johara knew Thomas and when she saw reports of his being a traitor to his country, they were so implausible she immediately took on this investigation herself. Webb's description of the steps Johara had taken to throw off any tails that were following Thomas were part of her trademark ability to write scenarios which read like a movie in the mind of this reader. This, in and of itself, makes for an excellent read of any thriller and covert op suspense books I tend to pick up. I love the details!

I have found with this author that each book can be stand alone, but if you enjoy the relationships that develop in each book, as I do, the characters tend to become an extended family and you may enjoy seeing them pop up here and there in future and past books. With BRIDAL ARMOR, Webb brings together two characters that had a past to make way for a new future - and one hopes and expects future spin-offs of the same intense excitement that make BRIDAL ARMOR a book and series I highly recommend.
