Review
The work of an artist, elegant in its simplicity. (Colleen McNally, Ph.D.)

In Relationship Play Therapy, the child-centered approach comes alive. Seasoned and aspiring practitioners alike can participate in the process through the encounters between child and therapist, which are vividly portrayed in verbatim sessions ranging from transitional situation to serious disturbances in behavior. Moustakas's presentation allows us to witness the development of the therapeutic relationship, the child's use of the raw materials of the playroom, and finally the resolution of the child's internal conflict with the external world. Required reading for anyone in the field. (Patricia Armstrong, Ph.D., M.S.W.)

Clark Moustakas's new book keeps us grounded in the essential qualities of the play therapist and the play therapy relationship: faith, acceptance, and respect. Moustakas brings to life a wealth of theoretical principles, values, and methods with abundant case material from his experience with children and families. For both the student and the beginning play therapist, he provides orientation and a strong foundation for entering the world of the children with whom they will work; the experienced play therapist will recognize a return to basic, natural ways of being with children as we engage them in the powerful healing process. Relationship Play Therapy represents an enriching opportunity to share the current thinking of one of the pioneers in the field. (Alvin Ramsey PhD)

In my own quiet way I follow the path of the firebrand, daring to live, to be, to create in the rhythms of darkness and light, believing that in every learner, in every person, there is a bright and unique spark of energy and meaning that is often hidden or denied. I rejoice when I can inspire the trust, confidence, and support that frees energy and spirit for creative expression. My participation as an educator and psychotherapist has focused on the healthy resources of the person, while not ignoring the dark side: I am firmly committed to the future and possibilities for emergence and growth rather than barriers from the past of blockages to the present. (Clark Moustakas)

Appreciation for a Founder
By Karla D. Carmichael, Ph.D
This text represents the final publication of the founder of Existential, and now called, Relationship Play Therapy. Moustakas's text is definitive in this theory of play therapy. The book is written in existential prose with specifics given to direct the therapist interested in this particular theory of therapy with children. To find this book valuable, the reader must believe in the child's capacity for self-determination and responsibility. In the present environment of behaviorial contracts and brief therapy interventions with little attention given to the developmental needs of childrem, Moustakas provides us with a refreshing return to seeing therapy as a committment to personal growth and development between therapist and client. The methodology and theory are meant to encourage personal responsibility and understanding that goes far beyond the immediate problem. The reader can be easily deluded by Moustakas's prose and writing style into believing that this is a simplistic theory. The application of the theory presented is beyond the lay person and requires training in psychotherapy to be effective. However, the reading and style of expression makes for easy understanding of a complex form of therapy.

A valuable approach in a broad context
By Doc Gom
It is apparent to me that one reviewer here who is criticizing the book, did not receive his or her education at the very graduate school founded by Clark Moustakas. When Dr. Moustakas comes into the classroom for his annual lecture in play therapy with his plaid suitcoat and delivers moving words and then, in a very Morrie Schwartz kind of way, dances, and makes the class dance, you realize you are in the presence of a great spirit.

Anyway, without receiving instruction on this theory outside of glancing at the book, I could understand this person's interpretation of this theory. But there really are emphases on limitations (the book even provides an examply), and you talk about disinhibition in children today, have you ever worked with foster children, they are not the disinhibited children you are describing? I also don't see the Freudian overlap, existential psychotherapy is different. It is about providing an atmosphere where the child can be authentic in ways that his typical environment does not allow him. When he feels comfortable to express this, feelings are identified and reflected back, and appropriate ways to express these feelings are then explored.

Overall, this book offers a very human approach, and yes, it may be more appropriate for the intermediate play therapist, but the approach works more than you have confidence for when you hit that playroom for the first time but what I have learned through practicing the approach, is that you have to trust the process. If you go with it, you will see results.

New Perspectives on the Civil War: Myths and Realities of the National Conflict (Modernity and Political Thought)From Rowman & Littlefie

As the American Civil War recedes into the past, popular fascination continues to rise. Once a matter that chiefly concerned veterans, separately organized North and South, who gathered to refight old battles and to memorialize the heroes and victims of war, the Civil War has gradually become part of a collective heritage.

Issues raised by the war, including its causes and consequences, reverberate through contemporary society. Family and community connections with the war exist everywhere, as do battlefields, memorials, and other physical reminders of the conflict. We, as Americans, are fascinated by the sheer magnitude of the war fought over thousands of miles of American soil and resulting in awesome casualties. It was a gigantic national drama enacted by people who seem both contemporary and remote.

Here for the first time, leading Civil War scholars gather to sort out the fact and fiction of our collective memories. Contributors include Pulitzer Prize-winner Mark E. Neely, Jr., Alan T. Nolan, John Y. Simon, James I. "Bud" Robertson, Jr., Gary W. Gallagher, Joseph T. Glatthaar, and Ervin L. Jordan, Jr.

The A to Z of Afghan Wars, Revolutions and Insurgencies (The A to Z Guide Series), by Ludwig W. Adamec

Since its foundation in 1747, Afghanistan has seen seemingly limitless wars waged by the central government to consolidate its control over the country as well as rampant tribal warfare. There have been three Anglo-Afghan Wars (1839-42, 1878-79 and 1919); a Russian-backed Marxist government in Kabul battled a coalition of tribal armies, which was soon followed by the Taliban takeover. Now, in the midst of a war against terrorism, the United States is backing another central government in yet another sporadic struggle.

All the information currently available on the endless chain of wars stretching over two and a half centuries is traced in The A to Z of Afghan Wars, Revolutions and Insurgencies. It consists of the American involvement in Afghanistan since October 2001 as well as individual campaigns, including tactics and logistics of skirmishes, the weapons used, and biographical entries on the significant leaders involved in the battles. Extensive analysis of regional and ideological divisions within the country and the external forces that have brought around conflict in this remote, mountainous region, in addition to a chronology of the encounters, an extensive bibliography, and numerous maps and illustrations make this crucial volume indispensable.

A deeply felt, deftly rendered novel of the utmost importance to any reader interested in understanding totalitarianism and its terrible human cost. Urgent, evocative, and utterly convincing, Velvet Totalitarianism is a book to treasure, and Claudia Moscovici is indeed a writer to watch, now and into the future. --Travis Holland, author of The Archivist's Story

Claudia Moscovici's  Velvet Totalitarianism triumphs on several levels: as a taut political thriller, as a meditation on totalitarianism, as an expose of the Ceausescu regime, and as a moving fictionalized memoir of one family's quest for freedom.

--Ken Kalfus, author of the novel A Disorder Peculiar to the Country

With style and wit, Claudia Moscovici tells a story of resilience and hope.  Velvet Totalitarianism is a novel well worth reading, both for its compelling narrative and for its important message. Michael Kort, Professor of Social Science

Claudia Moscovici offers her readers a multifaceted book--Velvet Totalitarianism--that is at once a love story, a political novel and a mystery. --Sanda Golopentia, Professor of French, Brown University

Velvet Totalitarianism is a book well worth reading. The novel is a page-turner, witty and well written.

--Nicolae Klepper, author of Romania: An Illustrated History.

Moving between extraordinary and ordinary lives, between Romania and the United States, velvet totalitarianism and relative freedom, dire need and consumerism, evoking her Romanian experience in the seventies, the emigration to the U.S. of her family in the eighties, and the 1989 uprising in Timisoara and Bucharest that marked the end of Ceausescu's regime, Claudia Moscovici offers her readers a multifaceted book - Velvet Totalitarianism - that is at once a love story, a political novel, and a mystery. (Sanda Golopentia, professor of French, Brown University)

This vivid novel by Claudia Moscovici, historian of ideas and wide-ranging literary critic, traces a family of Romanian refugees from the stifling communist dictatorship of their homeland through their settling in the United States during the 1980s. In Velvet Totalitarianism, Claudia Moscovici makes her readers viscerally feel the corrosive psychological demoralization and numbing fear totalitarian regimes impose on those who live under them. At the same time, with style and wit, and informed by her experiences as a child in communist Romania and then as an immigrant in the United States, she tells a story of resilience and hope. A Remarkable Story of a Family's Surviving Totalitarianism

A Remarkable Story of a Family's Surviving the Totalitarian Regime in Romania

Claudia Moscovici's historical novel, Velvet Totalitarianism, has been acclaimed as "A deeply felt, deftly rendered novel of the utmost importance to any reader interested in understanding totalitarianism and its terrible human cost," by author Travis Holland, author of The Archivist's Story. This remarkable work makes the tortured history of Romania under the oppressive regime of Ceausescu come alive by tracing a family's struggle to survive the corrosive psychological demoralization of living under the yolk of the Securitate, the country's Secret Police.

We are introduced to the Schwartz family who live in fear of the power of the Securitate's loud interrogations, torture, rape, and severe beatings. Always on the alert, family members ask, "Were you followed home?" or pronounce, "Can't we enjoy life without worrying every single moment?"

We follow the oldest son of the Schwartz family, Radu, to Paris where he had been given permission to study chemistry at the Cite' Universitaire. He also takes a part-time job with Radio Free Europe and meets Ioana, an athletic raven-haired beauty. Their love blossoms but at a high cost for Radu. She introduces him to a "friend" who secretly works for the Securitate, someone who pressures Radu for information from Radio Free Europe. Tortured for not agreeing to spy on RDF, he soon disappears and loses contact with his family.

Meanwhile his father gets a teaching job in the United States and defects. His mother and younger sister apply for visas to join him; that action results in the mother's losing her job. Not until three years later are they successful in getting their visas during which time they only receive a rare telephone call from Radu letting them know that he is still alive, but not disclosing his location or what he is doing. A bit of humor is interjected in reading about the mother and sister's attempts to understand the English language and American way of life when they do finally arrive in the USA.

Radu and Ioana eventually reunite and Radu learns that they have a son, Lucian. Unbeknown to one another, they each had secretly been working for the CIA after Radu's disappearance. After the overthrow of Ceausescu's regime, they are both offered positions in the new government by someone who had formerly worked for the Securitate. The irony in this turn of events prompts Ioana to declare, "Nobody gives a damn about ideals and principles. Politics is about power."

This novel makes the history of Romania's totalitarian regime under Ceaucescu come alive as it is brought home by following the struggles of a family living through that period of time. It is a story of resilience and hope, a book well worth reading.

Love among the thorns
By Roger Crowley
There are very many versions of Romanian history, especially when dealing with the events leading up to the Romanian Revolution of 1989. So much happened, in fact, during the closing days of communism in Eastern Europe, that there is no one story of how it happened. This novel powerfully represents one scenario.

This fictional account, where the author even gave the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu the maiden name of his wife Elena Petrescu (perhaps to emphasize who the real power was in the country), is a story of how love can have many twists and turns in a society living in constant terror of the Securitate (secret police). Even though the state managed to force people to do things they wouldn't normally do, love finally emerges from the thorns of communism ... and the people carry on with their lives.

There are numerous theories about how the Revolution of 1989 started, including the premise proposed in the novel that the CIA played a part. Whether or not this scenario is true is immaterial. The novel is a moving picture of how it might have happened. I felt sad when the book ended because I wanted to hear more about the characters. I can only hope there's a sequel.

Highly recommended book on Romania
By Nicholas Klepper
Cold historical facts and figures tend to leave us emotionally indifferent. The impact of a nation's tragic events on one single person or family is much better understood and more profoundly felt. And this is what makes Claudia Moscovici's book so very special. Her novel, Reincarnation of Love, is prefaced by Velvet Totalitariasm, a very well researched history of Romania under Communism. Depending on one's point of view, Moscovici's work could be considered as the fictionalized story of a real Jewish-Romanian family under Communism, based on her own recollections and that of her family, supported by true historical facts; or a brief history supported by the fictionalized story of a real family. It's a book well worth reading. The novel is a page turner, it's witty, well written, and includes some touching portrayals of immigrant life in the United States as well.

Nicolae Klepper, author of 'Romania: An Illustrated History', a best-selling book published by Hippocrene Books, NY

From Publishers Weekly
Imagine a collaboration between Shelby Foote and Margaret Mitchell and you get some idea of the historical irony and passion that inform this fine literary novel, which captures the full sweep of the Civil War in Virginia. In 1934, a WPA writer interviewing 90-year-old Marguerite Omohundru, former Richmond bank president, uncovers the dark secrets of a prominent Virginia family. In 1857, 14-year-old Duncan Gatewood is disowned and sent off to VMI when his father, Samuel, discovers he has fallen in love with and impregnated Midge, a 13-year-old light-skinned slave. To prevent scandal, the girl and infant son, Jacob, are sold south by slave dealer Silas Omohundru, who eventually reclaims Midge from a Vicksburg brothel and marries her. But Midge (or Maggie) already has a black husband. When he runs away to look for her, the daughter of a neighboring white planter and her husband are sent to prison for giving him shelter. War breaks out, and these many oddly linked characters are flung apart and cross paths with various actual figures of the day. (This is the third book this season in which John Brown is a character: the others are Russell Banks's Cloudsplitter and Jane Smiley's The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton.) From the blockade-running at Wilmington and Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, they make their separate ways through the carnage. McCaig's (The Butte Polka) portrayal of this moment succeeds not only as a splendid piece of writing but also as a searching indictment of inhumanities that still haunt the American soul. BOMC, QPB and History Book Club selections. (Apr.) FYI: A Virginia sheep farmer as well as a novelist, McCaig occasionally writes on rural living for NPR.

From Kirkus Reviews
A large, ambitious, carefully researched novel tracing the impact of the Civil War on a Virginia slave-owning family, their neighbors, and their slaveswith enough melodrama and subplots to fill several books. McCaig (Nop's Hope, 1994, etc.) notes that he set out to explore why Southerners were so eager to risk their ``lives, fortunes, and honor in such a forlorn struggle.'' While his portrait of the Gatewoods does suggest something of the complexity of forces that pushed the South into war, the exploration is soon lost in a welter of Gatewood adventures. Before marching off to war, Duncan, heir to the plantation, sees his mulatto lover and the son he's had with her sold down south by his outraged father. Later, he and his brother-in-law, Catesby Byrd, serving with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, are caught up in ferocious battles and are often witnesses to turning points in these engagements. Duncan, repeatedly wounded, eventually loses an arm. And the seemingly unrelenting Catesby is finally so overwhelmed by four years of slaughter that, after a particularly vicious clash in the Wilderness campaign, he commits suicide. Meanwhile, Duncan's former lover Maggie, having been sold to a bordello, is bought by a wealthy cotton-broker turned blockade-runner who marries her, successfully passing her off as white, and Jesse, a bright, determined Gatewood slave, flees the plantation and signs up with a black regiment. McCaig deftly weaves the adventures of these figures, as well as those of a variety of lesser characters (including bandits passing themselves off as Southern partisans, a schoolteacher turned outlaw, and a resolute young woman serving as a nurse for the Confederate Army), into a vivid, crowded narrative, ending with Lee's surrender. The battle sequences, and McCaig's feel for the specifics of 19th-century life and mores, are impressive. Too bad that the few Federals are ciphers, suggestive of the prevailing one-sidedness that holds this often powerful tale from an epic breadth and dilutes its impact. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. A treat for Civil War fans
By John D. Costanzo
This epic civil war novel follows the lives of a southern plantation, from just before the war until the end at Appomattox. McCaig gives us several viewpoints, from slaves and slaveholders to the soldiers fighting the war. I was reminded of Gone With the Wind, Roots, and Glory at various times during the novel. As you would expect in a civil war novel, there are plenty of gory battle scenes.
It was a very good, though not the most original, telling of the civil war period. But McCaig makes up for the lack of originality with a strong narrative and some really memorable characters. You will be left with a good sense of what it was like during the darkest period in American history. I give this a strong recommendation for those who enjoy historical fiction, and especially those who enjoy civil war novels.

Big, sprawling Civil War novel
By Elizabeth Clare
Dickensian in scope, this book follows the inhabitants of a Virginia plantation called Stratford, both white and black, as the existence they've always known is shattered forever by the coming of the war. In the course of the novel, every character is tested beyond anything they could have ever imagined. Some manage to make choices that leave them with honor, love, and freedom; others fall by the wayside.

The book begins in 1859 with the youthful love affair between Duncan Gatewood, the young son of the Stratford's owner, and Midge, a pretty little slave who works in the house. The consequences of Duncan and Midge's affair explode when Midge gives birth to Duncan's son, Jacob, and Duncan wants to acknowledge the child as his own. But anything that the impulsive pair might have done is derailed by the coming of the war.

What happens to Duncan after he joins the Confederate Army and Midge after she is sold away from Stratford are just two of the threads that make up the absorbing tapestry of Jacob's Ladder. Some of the other intriguing characters are Sallie Kirkpatrick, a young girl who becomes a woman in the brutal military hospitals of Richmond; her husband Alexander, a vain schoolmaster who drifts from one disaster to the next; Jesse Burns, who runs away from Stratford and seeks pride and a new future as one of the Union's colored troops; and Catesby Byrd, who only wanted to be a comfortable country lawyer but finds his intelligence and sensitivity mauled in some of the war's most horrific battles.

A puzzling and pointless framing device involving a 1930s WPA slave narrative could have been easily dispensed with, and as with any multi-character saga, some of the storylines are more satisfying than others. But these are minor criticisms. The characters, settings, and battles in Jacob's Ladder are masterfully rendered. The handling of the multi-racial storyline is the best I've seen. Anyone with an interest in the Civil War or historical fiction will find this book a very satisfying read.

A Civil War novel that's actually about the Civil War
By A Customer
I read Donald McCaig's wonderful new book two months ago and waited for the rest of the world to discover it too. What gives? Here is a complex, seamless and beautifully written book that neither glosses over the social inequities of the time nor attempts to judge 19th century thoughts and actions with a 20th-century hoity-toity political correctness. Not only that, it's a heck of a story. Anyone who likes a good read should like this book. Anyone who's interested in the Civil War and wants a heart-in-your-throat, immediate sense of the horrific Virginia battles should like this book. Don't get me wrong, I loved "Cold Mountain." But it mainly a love story, with nature as a subplot and the Civil War only as a backdrop. "Jacob's Ladder" is mainly about the war, as seen through the eyes of some endearing and deftly drawn characters. Why is this book missing the public bandwagon? I'm glad I sneaked into the select group who heard about it early and read it right away.

A Manual for the Performance Library (Music Library Association Basic Manual Series), by Russ Girsberger

The performance librarian is the person responsible for managing, maintaining, and organizing the resources of a performance library. This personnel can now benefit from A Manual for the Performance Library, a guide for organizing and operating a library of music performance materials.

Music for performance has different needs than music for study. It must be easy to read and understand, and it must be formatted so as not to impede the musician's efforts to interpret the notes into musical sound. This book outlines, step-by-step, the ways of acquiring, processing, cataloging, and preparing music for performance. While focusing primarily on music for large ensembles, like orchestra and chorus, author Russ Girsberger also includes concepts that apply to wind, jazz, and chamber ensembles. The material is logically organized, detailing information on purchasing or renting music; cataloging and processing scores; numbering, marking, binding and shelving parts; and preparing and distributing the music for rehearsal or performance. Additional duties, such as describing necessary information on preparing concert programs and audition lists, and caring for and preserving the library's holdings are also covered. The manual concludes with a glossary, an annotated bibliography, and an appendix, which features sample forms for cataloging and circulating the library's materials.

Then There Was No Mountain: A Parallel Odyssey of a Mother and Daughter Through Addiction, by Ellen Waterson

Sophie was a brilliant child by anyone's definition. Accomplished athlete, 4-H champion, recognized artist, and Western and English horsewoman. By the age of sixteen she had added one more "achievement" to her resume, this one ignominious: drug addict. Then There Was No Mountain describes the external and internal processes the author, Sophie's mother, experiences in coming to terms with her daughter's addiction, then in seeking and ultimately finding help. Equally important, the author is forthright in examining the role that she, as a single mother, played in perpetuating her daughter's crisis by not coming to terms with her own "drugs of choice": guilt, shame, and denial.

A timely and provocative voice in the chorus of firsthand experiences of parents dealing with their childrens' drug use, Then There Was No Mountain is set against the backdrop of the ranching West, where the parallel paths of mother and daughter to healing are illuminated by Waterston's powerful pen. In real time the story covers a period of two years; in "heart time," the author writes, "it takes the reader to places of pain, promise, and wonder." Along the way, the rawness of life—represented by a father wanted on charges of drug possession, selling child pornography, and raping and molesting a minor—is set against the miraculous, an extraordinarily intuitive Montana social worker who helps adolescent girls regain their self-respect through ranch work.

This book is not just a "how-to" but what the author calls "a wherefore-and invitation to the reader to look the good, the bad, and the ugly of life in the eye with the same unwavering gaze."

From Publishers Weekly
Writer Waterston bravely revisits a painful period of her life in her first book. With a "passion for the marriage and life [she] wanted to believe [she] had," Waterston "clung to a distorted view," which kept her from recognizing the damaging effects her husband's drug addiction had on the couple's three children. Once Waterston, at 39, realized she had stayed in the marriage "beyond reason," she gathered the children (ages 10, eight and five), packed the family station wagon and evacuated their Oregon ranch. What followed was a series of dying dreams and "pie crust promises, easily made and easily broken." The author writes candidly about her desire to keep her children engaged in enough activities so they wouldn't risk being lured into the "dark" life their father lived. But she couldn't stop them from succumbing to peer pressure. After facing the drug addictions of her middle and youngest children (the book's subtitle is misleading, as both Sophie and Nick have drug problems), she concocted a formula that she hoped would hold life's negative influences at bay: "four times the good is needed to counter one instance of evil in the world." Waterston sheds light on the lucrative business side of rehabilitation, the fear of her children's relapses and the availability of drugs, especially for rural children. She also looks unflinchingly at her own failures as a parent and throws pointed admonitions at parents who are afraid to set firm rules for their children. "Parenting is not a popularity contest," she cautions. The lessons Waterston shares were learned by trial and error, and her book should help others who are blindly navigating their way back to health and normalcy.

[A] More must read. (More)

Full of honesty, heartbreak, and revelation. (San Jose Mercury News)

Only if you have a feel for the written word that is stronger than the heartache you must describe can you deliver a narrative as powerful as Ellen Waterston's. (Oregonian)

Waterston's book is a brave undertaking and a gift to us all. (True Story)

One of the top 10 Northwest books (Oregonian)

An unflinching, honest account of a mother's long struggle to save her troubled daughter. Set against vivid backgrounds of Western and New England landscapes, it is an engrossing story, all the more because many readers will feel a pang of recognition at the hard issues facing contemporary parents, whether they come from tiny, wind-swept ranch towns or affluent east coast cities. . . . A beautiful and compelling book. (Craig Lesley, author of The Sky Fishermen and Storm Riders)

The author is my sister. This is the main reason I know about this book, but not the main reason I strongly urge you to get it and read it. It is strong medicine. It is written from the heart, with eyes wide open. (Sam Waterston, star of NBC's Law & Order)

If your mission is to lay bare "the parallel odyssey of a mother and daughter through addiction," unfailing, unblinking honesty is your starting line. But only if you have a feel for the written word that is stronger than the heartache you must describe can you deliver a narrative as powerful as [Waterston's]. . . . But the illuminating force of this book is Waterston's pacing, her subtle detail of life on Oregon's High Desert, her metaphors, and her choreography with the language. Perhaps the compelling frankness of Then There Was No Mountain is possible because after years of sever and troubled darkness, pages of honest emotion seem like steps of light. (Steve Duin, The Oregonian)

An eloquent, smart, and painful book about the problems every parent faces raising children in America. (Kent Nelson, author, Land That Moves, Land That Stands Still)

Then There Was No Mountain is a book about how one person's substance abuse can turn the lives of loved ones upside down and inside out, requiring drastic self-exploration and extreme intervention for the other family members to recover. (Lon Woodbury Woodbury Reports, Inc)

a gripping, moving, and ultimately very hopeful story
By David Hall
Ellen Waterston gifts us with a gripping, deeply personal, and ultimately very hopeful story that reads like a good novel. You need not have endured the heartache of serious drug addiction and denial to appreciate this compelling story, although I work professionally with many addicted teens and their families and found the story true as well. It begins with Ellen's youngest daughter Sophie's submersion into drugs, dysphoria and dysfunction. As Sophie sinks deeper and deeper into her alienated world, Ellen (now a single mother after divorcing Sophie's drug abusing father) becomes more desperate and finally sends Sophie off to a residential drug rehabilitation program in rural Montana. There both of them find a guiding light in the woman founder and force behind the Northern Lights adolescent girls rehabilitation program. From here the story is about Ellen and how she struggles to see and then heal her own addictions to control, guilt, and victimization. When Sophie comes home after nearly a year in treatment and gets drunk with her older brother, Ellen implodes. "I am sick of doing it all, I wailed to myself: bread winner, boundary setter, unconditionally loving parent. I have been robbed by drugs, I whined, of my husband and my relationship with my children." Friends urge her beyond feelings of betrayal to a place where she can see that Sophie is now responsible for her own life. Beginning to genuinely let go, she rediscovers the real life we are all meant to lead-"in trust, in faith, in love, even when you can't see." Like real life, the story has a hopeful, but not final ending. The struggle that Ellen captures so eloquently is life-size and on-going. I savored this odyssey well after finishing the book. Hopefully, when Sophie grows into her own muse, she will treat us to her own story.
