Good small town character story - NOT a romance
By Jenn
Cute story of a small town and a crazy idea and nice characters, however, I doubt 5% of the book included the "hero" and "heroine" - highly disappointing if looking for a simple, trustworthy "Harlequin" book. And while cute, it was not great and often boring. It's not a bad book, just not necessarily recommendable.

Good, but abrupt
By Amazon Customer
I really loved the characters and character development, but the ending was way too soon. The author could have at least written an epilogue at their wedding, maybe with Shelly having had her baby and ending up with one of the men or something. Also, whatever happened to Aurora, the mayor, or Lucia? Too many loose ends. Other than that, I liked the story and appreciated the fact that there were no raunchy bedroom scenes.

Egyptian Oedipus: Athanasius Kircher and the Secrets of Antiquity, by Daniel Stolzenberg

A contemporary of Descartes and Newton, Athanasius Kircher, S. J. (1601/2–80), was one of Europe’s most inventive and versatile scholars in the baroque era. He published more than thirty works in fields as diverse as astronomy, magnetism, cryptology, numerology, geology, and music. But Kircher is most famous—or infamous—for his quixotic attempt to decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphs and reconstruct the ancient traditions they encoded. In 1655, after more than two decades of toil, Kircher published his solution to the hieroglyphs, Oedipus Aegyptiacus, a work that has been called “one of the most learned monstrosities of all times.” Here Daniel Stolzenberg presents a new interpretation of Kircher’s hieroglyphic studies, placing them in the context of seventeenth-century scholarship on paganism and Oriental languages.

Situating Kircher in the social world of baroque Rome, with its scholars, artists, patrons, and censors, Stolzenberg shows how Kircher’s study of ancient paganism depended on the circulation of texts, artifacts, and people between Christian and Islamic civilizations. Along with other participants in the rise of Oriental studies, Kircher aimed to revolutionize the study of the past by mastering Near Eastern languages and recovering ancient manuscripts hidden away in the legendary libraries of Cairo and Damascus. The spectacular flaws of his scholarship have fostered an image of Kircher as an eccentric anachronism, a throwback to the Renaissance hermetic tradition. Stolzenberg argues against this view, showing how Kircher embodied essential tensions of a pivotal phase in European intellectual history, when pre-Enlightenment scholars pioneered modern empirical methods of studying the past while still working within traditional frameworks, such as biblical history and beliefs about magic and esoteric wisdom.

Review
“Extraordinary: Kircher, the figure of fun, emerges from Stolzenberg’s impressive analysis as a serious scholar. . . .  The roots of Kircher’s brilliant failure as a scholar lay in his effort to pursue two incompatible paths at the same time. The mystical antiquarian could not be true to both his selves: he was a living oxymoron. It is the measure of Stolzenberg’s achievement that he makes us feel the passion and understand the arguments that led Kircher to try.” (Anthony Grafton London Review of Books)

“Thoroughly researched and informative.” (Alastair Hamilton Times Literary Supplement)

"Not only an important addition to this literature, but also deserves to be read by anyone interested in the encyclopedic and antiquarian scholarship which characterized much of the early seventeenth century republic of letters." (British Journal for the History of Science)

"Stolzenberg has succeeded admirably in showing us that Kircher's work on ancient Egypt must be taken seriously in order to understand him and his times." (Renaissance Quarterly)

“A fine study of Kircher’s Egyptological writings and the world of scholarship in the second half of the seventeenth century. Recommended.” (R . Fritze, Athens State University Choice)

“If you don't already know about Athanasius Kircher, you should take a long trip through his extraordinary and weird fields of research: a Jesuit priest who tinkered with everything from early cinematic projectors to talking statues, and wrote about impossibly tall skyscrapers inspired by the Tower of Babel and developed his own unique twist on a volcanic theory of a Hollow Earth. If Gizmodo had been founded in the seventeenth century, Kircher would have been its editor in chief. Stolzenberg's book is an excellent biography of the man and his ideas.” (Gizmodo's Notable Books of 2013)

"A landmark study. .  . . There is much that is new in this insightful and scrupulously researched book, whose most notable contributions would appear to be the restoration of Kircher's place in the intellectual and antiquarian culture of his own day, with due consideration of the subsequent reception, and rejection, of his work during the following century. Especially notable is Stolzenberg's characterization Kircher's Egyptological project as the product of 'an encounter between two early modern intellectual traditions: erudition (antiquarian research and philology) and occult philosophy (the Renaissance Neoplatonic tradition, based on a lineage of esoteric wisdom attributed to extremely ancient wise men).'" (Brian A. Curran, Pennsylvania State University Early Science and Medicine)

“Daniel Stolzenberg’s beautifully conceived, meticulously researched, and eminently readable study of Athanasius Kircher is bound to become an indispensable reference for anybody interested in the momentous seventeenth-century transition from traditional occult philosophy and its belief in an ancient oriental wisdom to modern perspectives grounded in critical philological and historiographical methods.” (Wouter J. Hanegraaff, University of Amsterdam)

“Daniel Stolzenberg has a sure grasp of Athanasius Kircher’s infinite output, intricate thought, and complicated times. An informed and sensitive treatment of a truly baroque character.”
(Ingrid D. Rowland, University of Notre Dame)

“In this lively and erudite book, Daniel Stolzenberg sets himself the daunting task of making Athanasius Kircher legible to a modern reader. How, he asks, can we understand a writer like Kircher without making him a figure either of comedy or of awe? The answer he gives is a tour-de-force reading of Kircher’s central claim to fame in the seventeenth century, his work on hieroglyphics. Along the way, we learn much about the fate and function of occult philosophy in the period, the operations of the early modern republic of letters, and the place of Rome and early modern Catholicism more generally in the intellectual landscape of early modern Europe.”
(Jonathan Sheehan, University of California, Berkeley)

“In Egyptian Oedipus, Daniel Stolzenberg not only provides the first serious study of Athanasius Kircher’s investigations into the history and culture of ancient Egypt, but he also furnishes a perceptive critical evaluation of Kircher’s scholarship and persona, warts and all. Stolzenberg goes beyond Kircher’s programmatic statements to unveil his actual scholarly practices. In doing so, Stolzenberg has produced an exemplary case study of a polymath at work and has provided us with a more nuanced understanding of Kircher’s influence.”
(Mordechai Feingold, California Institute of Technology)

Much needed contribution to philosphical history

Kircher and his work is one of the most important yet greatly neglected areas of the Western /Philosophical tradition.

Concerning Children (Classics in Gender Studies), by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Concerning Children reflects her innovative thinking on the social and economic construction of motherhood. In this volume, she takes on American society at its core principles: the betterment of our society through the development of our children. Gilman attacks our conventional model of child rearing, one based on obedience and discipline, rather than on the development of creativity and individuality. She responds to popular practices such as the corporal punishment of children, and proposes new and radical ways of child-rearing including social motherhood, which frees women to pursue careers. Presciently observing more than a century ago that it takes an entire village to raise a child, Gilman's Concerning Children is a must-read for anyone interested in gender and family studies.

Tradition Alive: On the Church and the Christian Life in Our Time, by Michael Plekon

Michael Plekon's Tradition Alive presents a collection of essays highlighting not only the vibrant tradition of 20th century Eastern Orthodox thought, but also the necessity of its inclusion in the theological canon constructed mainly by Western Christian thinkers. Ranging from the thought of the first generation of Russian ZmigrZs to contemporary Eastern Orthodox theologians, the essays in Tradition Alive point toward a positive theology that is convinced of the immanence of the holy spirit despite a world torn apart by revolution, violence, and despair. The contributors profess their faith in the transforming presence of Christ and the divine dimensions of the church by looking to the meaning and power of tradition in the practices of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. By focusing on the Orthodox Church's ecclesial and liturgical character, the authors emphasize the living character of the Christian tradition. With many contributions difficult, if not impossible, to access until now, Tradition Alive presents a brave and distinctive effort to enliven Western theology by looking to the theology of the East.

Review
Michael Plekon has once again provided us with a splendid anthology of essays on the purpose and nature of tradition within the Eastern Orthodox theological milieu. This is a delightful, elegant book, which illuminates Merton's analysis that the simplicity found in the architectural aspects of both Shakers and Cistericians rests on the foundation of humility shared by these communities. (Cistercian Studies Quarterly)

This book deserves a wide readership…[it] is the sort of book parish book review and adult study groups ought to be tackling, and I, for one, hope that priests and lay teachers will suggest its use in that setting-after having read it themselves. (St Vladimir's Theological Quarterly)

This is a real treasury. The most creative and profound names in modern Orthodox thinking are brought before us in magnificently accessible form, at the hands of a first-class scholar who has already written eloquently about many of them. The interest ofthis book goes far beyond specialists in Eastern Christianity alone: here is a symphony of thoroughly contemporary Christian voices who are at the same time steeped in the life of worship and tradition. A splendid collection.... (Dr. Rowan Williams)

Highland Fling, by Nancy Mitford

In Highland Fling—Nancy Mitford’s first novel, published in 1931—a set of completely incompatible and hilariously eccentric characters collide in a Scottish castle, where bright young things play pranks on their stodgy elders until the frothy plot climaxes in ghost sightings and a dramatic fire.

Inspired in part by Mitford’s youthful infatuation with a Scottish aristocrat, her story follows young Jane Dacre to a shooting party at Dulloch Castle, where she tramps around a damp and chilly moor on a hunting expedition with formidable Lady Prague, xenophobic General Murgatroyd, one-eyed Admiral Wenceslaus, and an assortment of other ancient and gouty peers of the realm, while falling in love with Albert, a surrealist painter with a mischievous sense of humor. Lighthearted and sparkling with witty banter, Highland Fling was Mitford’s first foray into the delightful fictional world for which the author of The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate later became so celebrated.

With an Introduction by Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey.

About the Author
Nancy Mitford, daughter of Lord and Lady Redesdale and the eldest of the six legendary Mitford sisters, was born in 1904 and educated at home on the family estate in Oxfordshire. She made her debut in London and soon became one of the bright young things of the 1920s, a close friend of Henry Green, Evelyn Waugh, John Betjeman, and their circle. A beauty and a wit, she began writing for magazines and writing novels while she was still in her twenties. In all, she wrote eight novels as well as biographies of Madame de Pompadour, Voltaire, Louis XIV, and Frederick the Great. She died in 1973. More information can be found at www.nancymitford.com.

Excerpted from the Introduction

In a sense, Highland Fling is a taster of coming delights. It was Nancy Mitford’s first novel, published in 1931 when she was still in her twenties, and among its pages the reader may find seeds of the characters that would so memorably people her later books, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, for both of which she is justly celebrated. General Murgatroyd is certainly the ancestor of Uncle Matthew, both descending, as they do, from Mitford’s own father, Lord Redesdale, who must surely rank as her principal source material throughout her career. I always enjoy his response when he was accused of discrimination. ‘I don’t discriminate,’ he spluttered indignantly. ‘I hate everybody.’ But alongside the splenetic General, there are clear traces of Linda Radlett in Jane Dacre, Lady Prague lays the groundwork for Lady Montdore, Albert Memorial Gates is a precursor of Cedric Hampton, and so on. But if it is fun to find the clues of what would come after, the book has its own merit in that this is the first time Mitford attempted to quantify and codify and explain the world of her beginnings, always seen with her wonderful, comic vision.

Admittedly, this world was not a hard place. Young couples live on nothing at all, highland castles are lent and borrowed, no one seems to have much in mind beyond some decent shooting and dinner at the club. Only Albert is engaged in anything remotely resembling a profession and that as a surrealist painter. Mitford’s men did not push pens or languish behind desks; her women spent their time gossiping and changing their clothes. Nor did they question the rules of a society that allowed them to idle away their days, or ask why they should be waited on hand and foot even when they hadn’t a penny to their name. But that is what makes this account of them a restful and hilarious read. It was a thoughtless age, perhaps, and even a selfish one, but without our moral smuggery which prompts every soap opera celebrity to veil their own self-obsession with much vaunted, anguished care for the environment or the survival of the whale. There is an honesty in that.

As a young woman, Nancy Mitford was madly, if quite unsuccessfully, in love with a Scottish aristocrat, Hamish St Clair-Erskine, and it is hard not to feel that Highland Fling may, in some ways, be a form of revenge after those wasted, tearful years in fruitless pursuit. How much time must she have spent in just such houses as Dalloch Castle, waiting for Hamish to love her, and how frustrating it must have been. Lord Craigdalloch himself, to say nothing of horsy Lady Brenda Chadlington or the intolerably dull Admiral Wenceslaus, all have the quality of being drawn from life, while the snobbish and philistine Lady Prague comes in for particularly savage treatment. ‘Why let her learn oils?’ said Lady Prague. ‘There are too many oil paintings in the world already. Let her do water colours. They take up much less room.’ Guided by Mitford’s sly description, we grasp at once why Lady Prague would be quite unable to resist Mrs Fairfax, an amoral bolter of the first order, because, during her many marriages, Mrs Fairfax has given birth to an English marquess and an Italian duke. ‘Dear Louisa,’ explains Lady Prague, ‘was always such a high-spirited girl, she can scarcely be blamed for her actions.’ But when others without so many connections in the ranks of the Peerage break her ladyship’s rules, there can be no mercy for them. The point is that Mitford knows these men and women. She knows how they work. She grasps their self-interest and their hypocrisy and their double standards. I would not say she never loves them, or some of them, but she knows them for what they are.

In Highland Fling, as always with this author, there is the vividness of personal experience in her work and this pre-war group do seem to embody exactly what a clever, quick-witted woman must have found so hard to endure about that oh-sopredictable life on the hill. It is a culture of watching others kill all day, getting ever more cold and wet before returning to freezing baths and bad dinners with boring people. Indeed, she writes with such relish that I am convinced the fate she metes out to the scene of their pleasures is one she wished on too many of such house parties in this unsatisfactory period of her own past. Because, for me, that is the key to Mitford’s genius: her intimate knowledge of this world and these people. Indeed, no one knew it—or certainly could articulate it—better. But, in her own way, even by this stage of her life, she had grown out of its limited values and, free as she was, she could afford to turn the torch of her own acerbic wit on a tribe who thought themselves the very acme of high life and high principle but were instead living in a foolish and largely pointless bubble, a bubble, what is more, that was soon to burst.

Of course there is cruelty here beneath the comedy, a kind of sharpness that bears testimony to the force of her judgement even where it is wrapped in the cotton wool of humour. But most of all, there is truth. And truth, as all the world knows, is the basis of great comedy.

Comedy of manners
By Damaskcat
This is the first Nancy Mitford novel I've read and I shall definitely be reading more. The book is a social comedy and has very little plot to speak of. A group of ill assorted people gather at a Scottish castle while the owners are away for some shooting on the moors. The author focuses on two couples - Sally and Walter and Jane and Albert. Sally and Walter have a cash flow crisis and eagerly accept an invitation from the owners of the castle to play host to the house party while they are unexpectedly abroad.

Sally and Walter invite Albert - middle name Memorial - to go with them. Albert is an artist and reasonably well off financially. Jane is invited by Sally partly with matchmaking intentions. The rest of the guests are amusing depending on your ability to set aside political correctness and accept that manners and morals were completely different when this book was first published.

For me the pleasure in reading the book came from the interaction between the characters and the acidic wit in the descriptions and situations. Pretensions are exposed to the cold light of day and people are shown to be far other than their outward appearances. I was reminded of Jane Austen at her most waspish as demonstrated in the novella `Lady Susan'. If you enjoy Jane Austen, E M Delafield and E F Benson then you will probably enjoy Nancy Mitford.

Mitford at her earliest (and nearly her funniest)
By Jay Dickson
HIGHLAND FLING is for the most part so accomplished that it's hard to believe it was Nancy Mitford's first novel: it shows already firmly in place her tremendous gift with witty dialogue and her lifelong love of juxtaposing the differing mindsets of the upper classes. Although it shows some structural weakness (or naivete) in that it takes until the fifth chapter for Mitford to introduce her main character Jane Dacre, once Jane enters the picture and the action moves from London to Scotland it never stops being funny.

The set-up involves two dizzy and constantly hard-up London socialities, Walter and Sally Monteath, being asked by Sally's titled aunt to care for her Scottish castle and their seasonal shooting guests where she and her husband the earl are out of the country. To make their stay (which will save them quite a bit of money) more palatable, Sally and Walter invite a few of their friends among the Bright Young Things, Jane and the surrealist painter Albert Gates, come with them. The humor depends on first glance on the generational differences between the elder shooting guests, Establishment monsters of conservativism addicted to hunting and fishing, and the Monteaths' friends, who are their mostly for gossip and aesthetic reasons (Albert, who has taken to calling himself Albert Memorial Gates, is so avant-garde that he has gone to the other extreme and become a devotee of Victoriana, of which the castle abounds but which was very much out-of-date among the Establishment by the time the novel was written). Much of the novel's humor depends on the clash between the aesthetics of the elder and younger generations, and the lengthy description of the "safe" bourgeois tastes of Lady Brenda Chadlington, the one figure who most floats between the two groups, won't be as funny unless you are firmly entrenched in the visual style of the period. HIGHLAND FLING goes beyond this, however, and like most of Mitford's novels engages with the political as well as the aesthetic: Albert's explicit denunciation of the Edwardian attitudes of the most aggressive of the elders, General Murgatroyd, that to the First World War makes this novel more than simply delicious froth.

Highland Fling
By S Riaz
Published in 1931, this is Nancy Mitford's first novel. Centred in her world of the aristocracy, the novel concerns young artist, Albert Gates, who returns to England from Paris to stay with his friend Walter Monteath and his wife Sally. The pair are suffering from Walter's complete inability to sustain a job or curtail his spending and are suffering severe financial problems. When Sally is asked to house-sit (or 'castle-sit') the family home of her aunt and uncle, they accept the offer with misgivings, but with the intention of cutting down their spending.

Dalloch Castle has several guests expected, who are looking forward to indulging in their usual sporting activities - notably shooting and fishing. Although Walter and Sally invite Albert and Sally's friend, Jane, they are outnumbered by those of the older generation, who view them with suspicion. Captain and Lady Chadlington, General Murgatroyd, Admiral Wenceslaus, Mr Buggins and Lord and Lady Prague, largely view these Bright Young Things and their outlandish behaviour with a very jaundiced eye indeed. The generation gap throws up all sorts of problems and humorous situations, plus there is a love affair to brighten up the trip and a whole host of fantastic characters. Nancy Mitford is obviously just getting into her stride with this first novel, but her sharp satirical wit is very much in evidence already. Many people deride her novels as aimed at a world which no longer exists and people who no longer matter and that may be true; but she wrote about the world she knew intimately and captured it perfectly. For me, she is one of the greatest comic writers and I look forward to reading her novels in the order she wrote them - reaquainting myself with those I love and discovering those I may have missed.

Old Leather: An Oral History of Early Pro Football in Ohio, 1920-1935, by Chris Willis

Very little has been documented about the early days of pro football and the pioneers who had a major influence in the history of the NFL. Chris Willis, head of the Research Library at NFL Films, seeks to address this neglect. In this collection of original and archival interviews, former players, owners, fans, family members and league officials provide a rare glimpse into the origins of professional football. Full of rich anecdotes, early stars such as Red Grange, Jim Thorpe, Dutch Clark, Glenn Presnell, and Pete Henry are brought back to the playing field. The interviews also reveal how small towns in Ohio such as Canton, Akron, Columbus, and Dayton came to host franchises, as the state became a major force in the founding and growth of the NFL.

Old Leather provides the reader with a firsthand look at a period that has largely been ignored. It recalls what the era of professional football was like in the age of leather helmets, no television, dirt fields, small salaries and when playing for the love of the game was its own reward. This book will appeal not only to historians, sportswriters, and scholars, but also to die-hard fans and general history buffs who can never get enough of America's favorite sport.

Contains 17 photographs of players, owners, and teams.

Great Football Book
By Sean Lahman
Old Leather provides an intimate glimpse at pro football's early days. In the tradition of Larence Ritter's baseball classic "The Glory of Their Times," this book provides first person accounts from players, coaches, and executives from the NFL's first two decades. From Hall of Famers like Dutch Clark, Fritz Pollard, and Link Lyman to relatively unkown figures like Ike Roy Martin and Cyrus Kahl, all of the stories are fascinating. Until the mid-thirties, Ohio was the center of the pro football universe, and the interviews that Chris Willis has collected provide a unique insight to that time and place. For anyone interested in football history, this book is indespensible.

Incredible
By N. Zender
This is one of the best football books I have ever read. Well worth the money spent. Unfortunately, the history of football infancy has been largely ignored over the last several decades. Old Leather has actually unearthed interviews from the men who created the NFL we know today - and all it all happened, largely, in Ohio. There's no filter here, just the actual words of pioneers like Fritz Pollard, the first African-American to play and coach in the NFL and graphic accounts of the brutal, masochistic violent nature of football before it was "civilized" for mass consumption. No football library is complete without a copy of Old Leather on shelf.

Teaching against Global Capitalism and the New Imperialism: A Critical Pedagogy, by Peter McLaren, Ramin Farahmandpur

This book will address a number of urgent themes in education today that include multiculturalism, the politics of whiteness, the globalization of capital, neoliberalism, postmodernism, imperialism, and current debates in Marxist social theory. The above themes will be linked to critical educational praxis, particularly to teaching activities within urban schools. Finally, the book will develop the basis for a wider political project directed at resisting and transforming economic exploitation, cultural homogenization, political repression, and gender inequality.

Recent and widespread scholarly attention has been given to the unabated mercilessness of global capitalism. Little opposition exists as capital runs amok, unhampered and undisturbed by the tectonic upheaval that is occurring in the geopolitical landscape that has recently witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union and the regimes of the Eastern Bloc.

As we examine education policies within the context of economic globalization, we attempt to address the extent to which the pedagogy and politics of everyday life has fallen under the sway of what we identify as cultural and economic imperialism.

Finally, the book raises a number of urgent questions: What are the current limitations to educational reform efforts among the educational left? What are some of the problems associated with certain developments within postmodern education? How can a return to Marxist theory and revolutionary politics revitalize the educational left at a time when capitalism appears to be unstoppable? What actions need to be taken in both local and global arenas to overcome the exploitation that the globalization of capital has wreaked upon the world?

Review
This is an instant classic! Peter McLaren and Ramin Farahmandpur move Marxism into the new millennium. (David Gabbard, East Carolina University)

This latest offering by McLaren, co-authored with Ramin Farahmandpur, provides critical analysis of the relevant dimensions of Marxist theory in application to a critique of globalization. Professors of labor studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, business, and especially education, would be negligent to ignore the vital issues raised in this powerful and timely book. The call for critical revolutionary pedagogy should be heeded by educators, and they should be alarmed by the many examples provided of first amendment violations of the rights of teachers and students across America in the name of patriotism. A must-read! (Roberto Bahruth, Boise State University)

In this excellent volume the authors explain why a Marxist analysis of the existing capitalist system is necessary to understand the current neoliberal assault. This book arrives just in time! (Richard Brosio, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee)

At a time when the administration of Emperor Bush has taken American imperialism to new and dangerous heights and at a time when there is barely a country which has not been caught in the cross-hairs of American military might and the radical free-market ideology of corporate globalization, McLaren and Farahmandpur have fashioned a book that is a timely, critical intervention for our times. A revolutionary pedagogy of resistance has never been more needed. (Valerie Scatamburlo-D'Annibale, University of Windsor)

McLaren and Farahmandpur lay bare the hollow claims of the protoganists for contemporary capitalist society and uncover the new imperialism as a key topic for education today. Another education is possible! (Glenn Rikowski, University of Northampton, UK)

This is a powerful and passionate indictment of capitalism and imperialism―a necessary corrective to mainstream and fashionable postmodernist analyses that avoid and deny old-fashioned 'grand narratives' such as exploitation and class oppression. (John Marciano, State University of New York, Cortland)

McLaren and Farahmandpur -Contra-Band Pedagogy
By Ghada Nassar
With the precision of a surgeon, the vision of a sage, the passion of a teacher, and the cynicism of a philosopher, McLaren and Farahmandpur examine globalization, Imperialism, Marxism, and teaching policy through well researched past, a brilliant handle on a present, and a passionate call for a future of critical revolutionary pedagogy.

McLaren and Farahmandpur address an audience ranging from theorists to elementary school teachers; thus the appropriate use of language and sentence structure. In addition, the subtle sense of humor, entwined with a rich content, make this book a must read. I give it five stars

The Sacred and the Profane, by Chaim Grade

These three superb novellas by the internationally celebrated Chaim Grade reaffirm his reputation as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Yiddish writers of our time. Combining the richness of character and the moral concern that have consistently marked Grade's work, these stories offer a luminous picture of Jewish life in Lithuania between the two world wars, with its everyday problems and its spiritual yearnings. The characters portrayed will strike responsive chords in today's readers. 'The Rebbetzin' is the account of an ambitious woman who constantly pushes forward her scholarly husband, with the image always before her of the more eminent rabbi to whom she was once betrothed. In 'Laybe-Layzar's Courtyard' Grade gives us the people of a crowded Jewish neighborhood in Vilna, among them a fanatical pietist, a restless playboy and his vindictive wife, and a rabbi who finds that he cannot escape the yoke of the rabbinate or involvement in the destinies of others. In 'The Oath' a dying merchant extracts a series of pledges from his wife and children that will profoundly alter the course of their lives.

The bullet zinged past marine lieutenant Rafe McCaw-ley's ear. Instantly, he went into defense mode. "Jeep!" he yelled to the doctor and the ambassador as he shoved them toward the vehicle.

"Sniper," he told his men, but he knew they were already on it. As part of the rescue mission, they'd been trained for moments like this.

Buck and Meyers fired toward the hills.

Murphy had the car door open and helped the civilians in as fast as he could. Rafe used himself as a human shield.

Fire tore into his hip. He'd been hit.

He didn't falter.

He was the only thing between the sniper and the civilians, and it was his duty.

Pain scorched his right arm. Another bullet. He was a sitting duck, but it didn't matter. He had to get these people to safety.

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion then. A series of bullets pounded his back. His vest kept them from penetrating. The force knocked the breath from his lungs. He lunged forward in a final effort to protect the ambassador, half throwing the man into the vehicle so that Murphy could shut the door. As he did, blood stained Murphy's neck.

Rafe placed his hand at the wound to stop the blood flow, but he was losing blood, too, and he could feel himself getting weaker.

"Man down. Man down," Rafe heard himself utter as he slid into the darkness.

"Mister! Hey, mister! Wake up. Bad dreams, man. Bad dreams."

A groggy Rafe tried to open his eyes. It was as if someone had pulled him up out of quicksand.

"Mister, you okay? Wake up already."

Blinking his eyes open, Rafe took in his surroundings. A taxi. The driver, who had deeply tanned skin and a thatch of bright white hair, stared worriedly at him in the rearview mirror.

Rafe was in Fiji. Safe.

"Thanks," Rafe said to the driver. "Sorry for falling asleep." He must have passed out in the cab. The flight to Fiji had been brutal on his still-healing body, and he hadn't gotten much rest. Rafe scrubbed his face with his hand.

He was finally here.

Sun. Sea. And a woman.

Rafe figured that was all any man ever needed to heal wounds of the physical or mental variety. While he'd been in recovery for the injuries he'd suffered he'd thought of little else. The letters from Mimi were what kept him going through the intense therapy. Her sweet encouragement and kind words were the elixir his soul used to heal. And were exactly what his mind needed to help forget. Now he would see her in the next ten minutes.

The long hours on the plane here had been torture. His hip, arm and shoulder, which had suffered the brunt of the bullets in the firefight, were still sore. Even with his pain meds he couldn't get comfortable on the plane. He'd been awake for almost forty-eight hours straight. But he hadn't grumbled or even worried about it. The only thing in his mind was the image of the gorgeous five-eleven dark-haired beauty he was about to see. It had been eighteen months. He'd kicked himself for not kissing her at the end of their one and only date.

They met at a New York fashion show where Rafe had been duped into modeling some jeans that put him in hot water with the Marines. But it had been worth it to meet Mimi. After the fashion show, she'd taken him to a party with a lot of famous people. At the end of the evening, he'd walked her to her apartment but refused to go up. He was a gentleman, which seemed to surprise her. They hugged, and he left. The next day she flew out of town for a gig in London, and he hadn't seen her since.

She began writing to him six months ago. That first letter from her was a surprise. He'd written to her six months prior to that and when she hadn't answered, he thought that despite a great night she had moved on. In her first letter she told him that she traveled so much his letter must have slipped through the cracks.

They wrote back and forth frequently. He tried to get her on Skype or the phone, but things never appeared to work for Mimi when it came to electronics. She said it was one of her many faults. A few days before he'd been shot, he'd received a letter from her saying that as soon as he was free they should meet at her sister's new yoga and surf camp in Fiji. The time he was ordered to take off for rehab gave him the perfect excuse to accept her offer.

"Almost there," the taxi driver said as he swerved to miss a cyclist. Rafe's shoulder hit the side of the car and he winced. He was beginning to wonder if he'd ever be back to 100 percent. Every day he worked his muscles hard to make sure they didn't atrophy, but nothing moved quite as well as it should. And yet he needed to be ready for anything if he were to return to active duty one day.

The farther they drove away from the airport, the greener and more lush the surroundings. The cab's open windows allowed the smell of exotic flowers to permeate the air. The car stopped in front of iron gates covered with vegetation.

This was it.

The past year had been hell, and Rafe had to admit hanging out in paradise for a few weeks didn't sound too bad. Sure beat the hospital and his last three tours.

The driver pushed a button on the console at the side of the gate and the gate swung open.

The what-ifs plagued him. What if Mimi didn't recognize him? What if she was merely doing this to be nice?

For months he'd imagined swinging her in his arms and kissing her senseless when he saw her again to make up for the lost opportunity on their date.

Play it cool. Get a read on the situation.

He took a deep breath, then another.

The taxi stopped on the circular driveway in front of the resort. Well, it was more like a mansion than a hotel. Mimi said that her sister had worked hard to make it feel like a home away from home.

He grinned. It wasn't like any home he'd ever lived in. Mimi promised this was a great place to relax and rejuvenate and that was exactly what he needed.

As he glanced up, he realized there were several thatched dwellings along the beach on both sides of the house. They were probably the private bungalows Mimi mentioned. She was setting him up in one, all expenses paid.

He'd been hesitant about that, but she'd insisted, relaying to him that her sister had given her a great discount, since it was for a friend.

Grateful to stretch his legs again, he stepped out of the cab and was assaulted by the salty air coming off the sea. Surrounded by brilliant green foliage, it looked and sounded like a jungle. Birds chirped and there was even a monkey swinging in a nearby tree.

Yes, this was total bliss.

"Rafe?"

He turned and was expecting to see Mimi, but this woman didn't look anything like her. She was about the same height, but her hair was long and blond. And Mimi had looked as if she'd never been in the sun, whereas this woman was the color of golden honey.

She had a California girl-next-door quality that would normally be very appealing to him, but he was here to see Mimi.

He cleared his throat. "Yes, I'm Rafe. Are you a friend of Mimi's?"

She frowned and looked down at her toes for a second before glancing at him. "I'm her sister, Kelly. She's actually been delayed a few days. She had a shoot in Canada of all places, and she asked me to look after you."

Rafe's heart sank. He knew it was silly to be so disappointed, but he'd been looking forward to seeing her.

"Oh. Hi." He wasn't sure what to say to this woman. "Uh…should I find someplace else to stay until she gets here?" He could probably find another hotel on the island. His friends told him the lodging and food in Fiji was usually pretty cheap, except at some of the larger, fancier hotels.

"No, no. How can I look after you if you stay somewhere else? No, I have you set up in the Blue Bungalow. Everything is done by color here. Your surfboard is blue, the instructions and times for your classes are in blue. Even the room is decorated in blue."

She paused and then gave him a worried glance. "You don't mind the color blue, do you?"

He chuckled. "No. It happens to be my favorite color, but I don't want to put you to any trouble. And what do you mean by classes?"

The taxi driver cleared his throat, and Rafe pulled out his wallet. "Sorry, man. Here you go." He gave the driver the money for the fare plus a generous tip. Then he picked up his pack and followed Kelly down a path.

"You asked about the classes," she said as they tracked along another path, clearly leading to the bungalows on the beach. "There are yoga and surfing classes. I also have Pilates, ballet bar, regular and Bikram yoga classes. They're popular with our usual clientele here at Last Resort."

From the looks of the surroundings that usual clientele must be pretty highend. While it had a wild feel to it, the bungalows and the mansion or main building, which had to be at least ten thousand square feet, were very well maintained.

"I don't do any of those things," he said.

"I kn— Uh, right. Mimi said that she didn't think you'd go for it, but I also know that you are getting over some injuries. Surfing might be a little rough on you right now, but yoga could do you some good. And Pilates would help lengthen those muscles and relieve your pain."

He felt like a jerk for being so blunt. "You know what, I'm here. I might as well try whatever you have."

Turning, she smiled at him, her blue eyes shining with happiness.

Rafe's breath caught, and his lower regions responded so strongly he had to position his pack in front of him.

What is wrong with me?

She's a beautiful woman, but you are dating her sister.

Well, technically they weren't dating. But he'd flown halfway around the world to see her and that counted for something.

"I'm glad that you're so open-minded. I find that most women who come here are ready to try new things, but a lot of men are sometimes worried about looking ridiculous. And that's kind of ridiculous when you think about it. Tons of athletes from football players to track stars do yoga and Pilates. It's great for stress relief and it helps to clear your mind. We had a hockey team here about a month after I took over. Those guys were up for anything." Laughter colored her voice.

Clearing the mind was something Rafe needed desperately. The more Kelly talked, the more entranced he became with her. She was like a beacon of light and he was the ship in need of safe harbor. He snorted.

What you need is some sleep.

That was it. He was punch-drunk and slightly delirious. With his defenses down, he didn't have a chance when it came to Kelly, with her charm and beauty.

"So here we are." She waved a hand at the bungalow before him. The doors stood wide open, allowing the breeze to cool the large room, which was done in shades of light blue and white. Calming. It was nicer than any place he'd ever stayed. As a marine, he learned to fall asleep anywhere, and when he traveled he usually picked cheap motels. All he usually needed was a bed.

"Are you sure you don't mind me staying here?" Rafe asked as he ditched his shoes at the door and followed her inside.

The floor was cork or close enough by the soft feel of it. His aching joints relaxed their protest three steps into the place. There was a king-size bed on the left. To the right was a seating area with a huge flat-screen TV on the wall in the center, which could be viewed from both the bed and the sofa.

"Of course I don't mind. I wanted you to come, when, uh, Mimi told me what you'd been through. I mean, not to make a big deal out of it—your bravery—well, you're so darn heroic," she said, and ducked her head as if she were embarrassed. "Sorry. It's just that Mimi has told me so much about you that I feel like I know you. I'm normally kind of shy, which is why it's weird that I can't seem to stop talking around you."

She grinned sheepishly. "I'm going to stop talking now."

Rafe couldn't help but smile at her nervousness.

"Hey, you don't have to worry about that with me. I spend most of my time with men who only communicate by grunting. It's nice to hear a friendly voice that isn't barking orders."

Her soft chuckle was like a gentle caress. They stared at each other expectantly for a few seconds before he quickly peered at the ocean as though he was interested in the view.

"I bet you're exhausted," she said. "The bath is through there. There are robes and a selection of swim trunks if you need them. Dinner is at seven, but there are snacks in your fridge, which is under the television console. You have a butler, whom you can contact by pressing two on the phone. If you need maid service, that's number three. If you'd rather dine here instead of at the main house, you push four and they'll deliver the meal for you.

"So, that should be it. If you need me, push six and then seven, seven. We have several guests arriving, but practically everyone who comes to Last Resort is looking for solitude and waves to ride. It'll be quiet around here for you."

"Thanks," Rafe said. "I mean, really. This is way more than I expected."

The hopeful look in her eyes confused him. It was almost as if she'd worried he wouldn't like it here. How could he not? The place was mind-blowing.

"Right. If you need help unpacking, you can call the butler. I'll get out of your hair."

She sprinted from the bungalow.

He watched as she tripped slightly on the path and then carried on as if nothing had happened.

The two sisters couldn't be any more different. Mimi never had a hair out of place, and the night they went to the party she had dressed in pricey heels and a fancy dress that barely covered her thighs.

But if he were honest, he much preferred Kelly's casual white shorts and bikini top.

"You aren't going there," he murmured to himself. "Mimi. You're here for Mimi."

Right. What's it to be, then—a cold shower or a nap?

Nah.

Rafe glanced at the ocean and went in search of his board shorts.

A good hard swim would help ease his tension and get his mind off one very pretty resort owner.

Mimi's letters lured him, but he's drawn to Kelly
By Affaire de Coeur
Candace Havens' latest is a standalone sequel featuring gorgeous scenery and some lovely surfing imagery. Readers may find themselves exasperated with Kelly's secret keeping, and her parents are the source of entirely too much drama, but readers will still turn the last page of this 3 1/2 star read with a smile.

This is a quick sweet and sexy read
By D. Antonio
We met Marine Lieutenant Rafe McCawley in Model Marine. He was fun loving, sexy and ready for anything. Time has passed and a military action in Somalia has Rafe suffering from PTSD and recovering from several injuries. Kelly Callahan knows her fashion model sister Mimi is a little self-absorbed so when Mimi starts getting these sweet emails from Rafe – Kelly knows Mimi isn’t going to answer so she does (as Mimi). When Rafe needs a little R&R Kelly invites him to her resort in Fiji (as Mimi). One thing leads to another and then she has to explain to Rafe that it was she not Mimi that replied to his emails and invited him to her resort and into her heart. This is a quick sweet and sexy read that will have turning pages as quick as you can.
