Cornell's succinct stories take us into the heart of tormented and conflicting communities in contemporary Northern Ireland. However, rather than reproduce in all their helter-skelter brutality the details of sectarian hatred, she refracts it through vignettes of ordinary life alleviated, and sometimes transformed, by lyrical and compassionate revelations. At its best, this tack works well. The narrator of "Heat" recalls how she and her father used to trap and nurture animals taken from a wood. One day, while they are away from home, they see a terrorist explosion. When they return, their fledglings are dead, killed not by terrorism but by rabbits deprived of the vegetation they would normally feed on, driven to what is, for them, an unnatural level of violence. With everything pointing symbolically to the bombing, the story's feeling of eerie background menace is chilling in its restraint. "Outtake" describes a young Protestant trying to pick up a Catholic girl in a pub and what happens when he shares a ride home in a cab with some of her co-religionists. Elsewhere, however, Cornell's attempts to obliquely illuminate the psychology of embattled innocents caught up in struggles which are not of their own making are somewhat cruder. The mildly satirical "The Start of the Season," in which two Northern Irish tourists traveling in Italy try to disguise their homeland's self-destruction, falls flat. Like some others in the collection, it is grounded by a too-heavily rendered political dimension that punctures the drama of self-deception. Maps of Belfast.

This beautifully written collection of stories tells how beleaguered, ordinary folks living in Belfast manage to keep their faith alive and their souls together in the face of very harsh conditions, enduring the loss of loved ones and of basic necessities like jobs, food, and shelter as well as intangible things such as hope, trust, and certainty. Some of the protagonists escape into drinking or indifference, while others-like the father in "The House" and the nephew in the title story-walk away from responsibility. But most of the characters keep moving forward through a mixture of stubbornness, habit, and quiet courage. A few even find ways to break out of loneliness and self-isolation, as does Eddie in the moving "Hydrophobic." In many ways this book, winner of the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, transcends its place, ethnic group, and political conflict. If they hadn't been identified, the people here could be anyone's neighbors. A book full of tenderness and compassion; highly recommended.

Departures, a collection of short stories set primarily in Belfast, won the 1994 Drue Heinz Literature Prize with good reason. The stories offer naturally maturing plots and characters as well as emotional and psychological responses to a life laden with war-zone ethics, unemployment, poverty, and the challenge of daily survival. Cornell never addresses the obvious details of Northern Ireland's war. Rather, she confronts the effects of those details (random bombings, persistent religious division, and incessant economic and emotional depression) on the lives of families, couples, and children. The strongest piece in the collection is "The House" because the description of the deteriorating house structure, a community center, becomes a pivotal symbol of a family's (and a people's) loss of hope and their acceptance of that loss. Cornell's narrators, usually daughters, speak as awakened children, realistic and without romantic ideals. They seem lost innocents, confused and frustrated by the future they will inherit: alcoholism, unemployment, depression, grief. Yet, beneath the disparity, they desperately hope to discover some truth, some strength that may save them. Janet St. John

Wonderful, thought-provoking stories by a Unique Individual

The characters in each of the stories in this book are so real that sometimes it is frightening, but in the very best way. I was completely engrossed (shocked, touched, amazed) by each tale. I discovered Jenny's writing after taking a Creative Writing course under her tutelage at a university in upstate New York. On the last day of class she let us read "Touched." I read it the first time, and thought it was good. I read it again a few months later, understood it much better and thought it was great. I then proceeded to read the rest of the stories and was completely amazed. (I think if I had read these stories *before* I took the class, I would have been too intimidated to let her see my own writing.) This is a terrific group of stories, and I wish I could read some more of her writing.

Wonderful book

This is a book that reads more like poetry than a novel. It's rich and sensual imagery allows the reader to become a participant observer of the events that are not always readily understood. Once you just allow yourself to become a part of the scenery, and to let the images wash over you, then you begin to be rewarded. This book brought tears of many emotions for me. It is filled with real, honest people, living real, honest lives, and like life it is both humorous and depressing, joyful and oppressed, desperate and free.

How did a defeated and heavily damaged nation manage reconstruction so rapidly? What economic beliefs resulted in the "miracle" years of high-speed economic growth? Metzler argues that the inflationary creation of credit was key to Japan's postwar success-and its eventual demise due to its instability over the long term.

To prove his case, Metzler explores heterodox ideas about economic life , in particular Joseph Schumpeter's realization that inflation is intrinsic to capitalist development. Schumpeter's ideas, widely ignored within standard American neoclassical economic theory, were shaped by his experience of Austria's reconstruction after 1918. They were highly influential in Japan, and Metzler traces their impact in the period from the Allied Occupation, starting in 1945, through the Income Doubling Plan of 1960. Japan after defeat, Metzler argues, illustrates the critical importance of inflationary credit creation for increased production.

Lambert, a JFK conspiracy buff and writer, believes that the assassination has yet to be solved. In this engrossing report, she argues that New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison's 1969 prosecution of local businessman Clay Shaw for conspiracy to murder KennedyAthe source for Oliver Stone's interpretation in his filmAwas reckless, fraudulent and nothing more than a red herring. A jury agreed, acquitting Shaw in 54 minutes. Lambert also makes a case that Stone used the trial to launch his attack on the Warren Report rather than to find the truth. Lambert contends that a key witness, Perry Russo, who was left out of the movie altogether, made his allegations under hypnosis and while drugged with a notoriously unreliable "truth serum," and that Garrison, through an assistant, tried to bribe at least one witness to supply false testimony. But the main points of divergence between Lambert and Stone come in their assessments of the characters: Stone portrays Garrison (who died in 1992) as a caring family man, a heroic truth-seeker battling sinister forces. Lambert, by contrast, presents the former DA as a mentally unhinged, fame-seeking demagogue who, she alleges, was also a wife-abuser and a pedophile. Stone's Shaw is, according to Lambert, "an arrogant, elitist sybarite, a butch homosexual with a taste for... conspiracy," while Lambert's Shaw is a restorer of French Quarter buildings, a lifelong registered Democrat and a civic leader. While emotions clearly play a role in which version (if any) readers will believe, Lambert must be commended for having done an impressive job of tracking evidence and putting together a compelling narrative of events. Lambert presents an exciting, well-documented account of an early example of this bleak inheritanceADistrict Attorney Jim Garrison's prosecution of Clay Shaw, a well-respected, secretly gay member of the New Orleans business community, for allegedly heading a CIA plot to murder the President. After four years of Garrison's legal machinations, Shaw was found innocent, and Garrison was condemned by the New York Times for perpetrating "one of the most disgraceful chapters...of American jurisprudence." Remarkably, the trial became the primary source of information for the 1979 House Committee on the Kennedy Assassination Report, and Garrison's self-promoting memoir inspired Oliver Stone's conspiracy-happy film JFK. Revisionist history confronts revisionist history as the author debunks the conspiracy theory surrounding the assassination of John Kennedy that persists to this day. In March of 1967, Clay Shaw was arrested by flamboyant Now Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison and charged with conspiring to murder the president. Behind the arrest lay months and years of investigation. Shaw was linked to another conspirator, David Ferrie, and to Lee Harvey Oswald himself. (Ferrie's library card was found in Oswald's pocket on the day he shot Kennedy.) Eyewitnesses saw the three together, mysteriously appearing in the small town of Clinton, La. Another witness described their open talk of killing the president. Links were found to anti-Castro Cubans, the Mafia, the CIA. Shaw was shown to be a sadistic homosexual who wished to kill the president for the kinky thrill of it. Oliver Stone made a successful film of the story. The only trouble is, according to Lambert, it's all a pack of lies, based on deception, innuendo, hatred, ambition, and stupidity. The whole thing started when two down-and-outers on the New Orleans scene made up a couple stories, and Garrison, always ambitious, chose to believe and pursue them, though the men later recanted. Lambert does an amazing job of meticulously revealing the truth behind the lies. Through exhaustive research, countless interviews, endless reviews of Garrison's investigations and findings, she convincingly destroys virtually all the elements of the conspiracy theory Garrison so carefully wove. Here Garrison is no admirable Kevin Costner, but rather a hateful homophobic egomaniac willfully destroying an innocent man. Shaw was, after all, acquitted. Here Stone is no daring filmmaker, but a foolish, gullible man willing to believe anything. And in an America ever mistrustful of its government, both are all to readily believed. While flawed (Lambert pursues her own character assassinations at times), this is investigative reporting at its finest. The Complete Saga of the Garrison Case

One of the best JFK Assassination books you'll ever read. Focuses specifically on the ill-fated Jim Garrison case and the injustice that it was for Clay Shaw and jurisprudence. Patricia Lambert leaves no stone unturned and supplies all the details without getting too bogged down within. Highly recommended.

Weakly sourced and terribly biased view of Garrison investigation

When one attempts to unravel the truth of the Jim Garrison investigation through the written record, the first thing you notice is that there seems to be no middle ground surrounding it. Either Garrison walked on water or he was the devil himself. What would be wonderful is a truly independent biography that would use the work of Davy and DiEugenio and Mellan and also the work of Lambert and Kirkwood et al(and the FBI)and write an unbiased work that would chronicle the investigation both good and bad because while I think Garrison and his investigation did an immense amount of good his investigation was at times abusive and ridiculous(as evidenced by the participants in the investigations reluctance to refute abusive Big Jim stories that have been around for years, though they have had ample opportunitoes to do so and to cleanse themselves in the process).

Secondly, I have read Patricia Lambert's book and found it to be extremely one sided. Lambert's book rests on the shoulders of James Phelan, James Kirkwood, the FBI and unnamed sources. While she conducts some interviews she buries numerous instances in footnotes and elsewhere when the subject vehemently disagrees with the rumor the author puts forth, such as Garrison's lawyers putting a gun in the mouth a witness, Perry Russo's suicide attempt and rumors of very weird sexual practices etc. The basis for these salacious stories is usually Mr. "unnamed source" or high level Bureau (or CIA maybe) sources which permeate Lambert's footnotes and text like stinking dead fish. When you conclude a paragraph by stating that someone with knowledge told you there were "other" ominous reasons Garrison was let go from the FBI and you credit this statement and let the rumor hang out unsourced you devalue your entire project. Ms. Lambert does this throughout the book and it does not take long to know what you are reading is a one sided hatchet job.

I agree her book should be read to give a picture of the the worst that was accused of the Garrison investigation but this book doesn't lead anyone much closer to determining the truth.

A bold and compelling look at political madness.

Patricia Lambert jumps full-force into the dark and disturbing world Jim Garrison constructed in and around New Orleans in the days and years following the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Garrison is exposed as being no less disturbed and no less seedy in his efforts to gain notoriety than the venegeful Jack Martin, the grandiose Dean Andrews or the lost and confused Perry Russo.
Still, the most notable act of courage in this book, aside from the manner in which Clay Shaw dealt with the horrible injustices served upon him, is Lambert's willingness to shed some light on the inherent self-aggrandizement which propelled Garrison, Oliver Stone and countless other forward in the perpetration of misinformation - in this instance and most likely all other 'conspiracy-theories'. After all, it is truly a hero who can extract the truth from a mass of lies. And Patricia Lambert serves to give voice to all the silent heros along the way, who did just this, even when the truths were not what many had wanted to hear. And, in doing so, Lambert places herself, in this reader's eyes, as yet another hero in this sad story.
Kudos, Ms. Lambert for a job well done and a light cast brightly into the obscure and dreary shadows of this country's darkest hours.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) was an American author, best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres. Tarzan was a cultural sensation when introduced. Burroughs was determined to capitalize on Tarzan's popularity in every way possible. He planned to exploit Tarzan through several different media including a syndicated Tarzan comic strip, movies and merchandise. Experts in the field advised against this course of action, stating that the different media would just end up competing against each other. Burroughs went ahead, however, and proved the experts wrong—the public wanted Tarzan in whatever fashion he was offered. Tarzan remains one of the most successful fictional characters to this day and is a cultural icon.

This is a great read if you are a fan of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs series. I was pleasantly surprised and will continue to purchase the on going saga. It should be read in the correct order, and everyone of them is available at Amazon.

Strange Edition

If, like me, you failed to notice in the Amazon description for this edition the image of the cover, it does not look like other Tarzan books, then you probably also failed to notice that the size is 8 1/2 by 11". This edition looks like it was hand typed and printed on an ink jet. That said, it seems to be complete with fewer typos than normally appear in the "real" paperbacks. It's not difficult to read, though at $10.00 it seems rather pricey for what you're getting, but, if Tarzan the Untamed is out of print, this is an okay way to go. (You could probably read it free on a Kindle, Nook or Iphone.)
As always with Tarzan books, try to suspend your hopefully enlightened views and realize these books were written long ago in a different time, and just get past, if you can, how poorly black people are portrayed. (In this title, Germans are also portrayed as evil, and though I'm no history expert, I think this was during the start of WW1.)

A Quick and Charmingly Funny Read!

A review copy was provided for an honest review. I will make this short and brief. This was a cute little book that has a bunch of laughs to go with it. It delivers humorous points about why we're all human and I think it's enjoyably entertaining. The fact that it's supposedly told by the charmingly funny Gecko from Geico only makes it even more intriguing. You're Only Human is written with intellect and wit that makes it appealing to anyone looking for a quick, fun read. I wish that it had more text as it's comprised of lots of doodles and illustrations which make up at least 80% of the book itself. Metaphors used are society as organism,machines,wars,legal systems,economic markets,games,theatres and discourses.

Human societies,like biological organisms,are complexly structured systems composed of innumerable subsystems,each performing one or other vital functions for the system as living whole.Society as a 'set of interconnected and mutually interacting elements' this is interwined with the development of functionalist theory and also system theory.

Metaphor machine,it pictures human societies as artificial mechanisms analogues to technological inventions which can be designed and redesigned to accomplish human goals.

Metaphor war,considers conflict as acentral dynamic of human history which is viewed by machiavelli,Hobbes and Karl Marx.Conflict theorists often discern subtle forms of economic,political and psychological violence occuring in the routine operations of social institutions.So conflict theory is considered.

Metaphor law,or society as legal order,by this means,we are by nature the makers,followers,breakers,adjudicators,enforcers of social norms both formal and informal.

Metaphor market place, it depicts society as an elaborate network of exchange relationships among individuals and groups.Inspired by Adam Smith's classical economics and developed by social exchange and rational choice theorists,this metaphor views that in prevailing culture of capitalism,social relations as transactions based on self interested calculations of reward and cost.

Metaphor game,depicts social life as a spirited and intensely competitive quest for prizes and payoffs. It highlights strategy,tectics,deception,team loyalty in social relations.

Metaphor theatre,depicts people as social actors playing their prescribed roles in accordance with received cultural scripls.

Lastly,metaphor discourse explained symbolic interactionism. Image of human societies as linguistic creations-artificial realities constructed socially through the medium of symbols.

Worth reading again and again

The distant human past is visible in the Orkneys, the low green islands in the sea north of Scotland. People who lived there five thousand years ago built fine stone tombs and henges older than the Pyramids.
They watched the sky and kept calendars. And they used the right triangle of Pythagoras two thousand years before Pythagoras was born.
It used to be thought that culture slowly radiated north from the Mediterranean to ignorant savages in northern Europe.
But the people of the Orkneys turned our ideas about cultural diffusion upside down.
Tomb of the Eagles is their enthralling story.

It's obvious - John Hedges knows his topic. In this book, he brings together an enormous amount of information on Neolithic Orkney and gives it summary and scholarly analysis. If you're looking for a book on life during the Neolithic, this is a definite! Worth every penny.

“Wes Gehring (Ball State University) is back with yet another of his discourses on the nature and genres of film comedy. Ever since his research on the comic antiheroes of American films, his remarkable studies have ranged from his bio-bibliography Marx Brothers (CH, Mar’88) to American dark Comedy (CH, Dec ’96). However, his classic Screwball Comedy: Defining a film Genre (1983) remains the highpoints of his writings....[In this book on] the 1930s Depression origins of the sister genres of comic courtship---the madcap screwball comedy and the reality-based romantic comedy---Gehring shows how the two grew up into unique and contrasting types. For example, he points to plot pacing and differing emphasis on being funny versus accenting love as distinguishing codes. He presents a specialized portrait on double duty stars Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, who paired in both genres. His most notable contributions is a survey of modern-era variations and twists on both screwball and romantic comedies, e.g., The Runaway Bride and Sleepless in Seattle, respectively….Choice, March 2003 vol. 40, p1190

Like Reading College Term Papers

Three major problems with this book. First, the author tries in vain to determine the traits that make a "screwball" comedy film and a "romantic" comedy film. The problem, as you can see through his examples, is that there are too many exceptions to the rule. In addition, he lists a film as one or the other because it has, say, one of the traits. Yet, it could also have traits in the other category. Let's be honest and keep it simple: all screwball comedy films are romantic comedies (because they obviously have a romantic element to them), but not all romantic comedies are screwball comedies. Trying to say these films easily fall into one category or the other is nonsensical.
Second, each of the five chapters is written in the style of a college term paper, with footnotes galore! Not an interesting read.
And third, as the other reviewer noted, the author repeats himself over and over, often within the same chapter. (How many times does he need to tell us that Irene Dunne is the consummate but underrated screwball comedienne? Or that Frank Capra's films cannot be classified as either -- huh?)
I will also add that in the bibliography section, the author criticizes many other (and much better) books on the subject because the films they cover do not differentiate between "romantic" and "screwball". My guess is that they knew better than to try.
Stick with James Harvey's Romantic Comedy. In my opinion, the best book on the subject.

Jean Drum is currently an adjunct professor at Golden West College after a long career teaching in the Garden Grove Unified School District. Dale D. Drum, who died in 1991, spent his career as a professor of Speech-Communication at California State University, Long Beach.

Remarkable biography of a remarkable film artist

I have been a fan of Carl Th. Dreyer since seeing The Passion of Joan of Arc for the first time during the '90s. Seeing Ordet more recently even heightened my appreciation of this unusual--and underappreciated--film artist.

This biography was a pleasant surprise. It is fitting to the man. It is a highly readable, even occasionally humorous (but quietly so) yet highly informative review of the man's life (including a significant, but not overlong look at his childhood) and his films. One senses one gets to understand the personality of the man--what made him tick--although in saying that, I think most would never understand what makes him tick.

There is ample technical information on the making of each of his major films, using ample interviews and recollections of the man himself plus those who worked with him. Just on the chapter of Ordet itself, I immediately had to view the movie again with all the new information I had. It allowed me gaze in even more awe at the scope of Dreyer's accomplishment.

Dreyer was an artist of great complexity and depth, and this totally unpretentious biography does him justice. Similar to the the great Barry Paris biography of Louis Brooks, I felt the authors truly understood and cared about their subject, yet did not idealize him--human and artistic quirks and weaknesses are openly discussed.

I even think Dreyer, a very private person, would have approved of this biography--which shows a real understanding of the man and his art. And for most, he's not an easy artist to understand!

Vital Carl Dreyer biography

This book is not a critical evaluation of Carl Dreyer's films, but instead a vital biographical resource. It doesn't settle all the questions I have about Dreyer's life, but on the other hand it provides information I never thought about or imagined before, such as difficult challenges in his family life that he and his wife bravely underwent together. The Drums' book shows Dreyer to be even more of the quiet hero than I thought he was.
