a useless text for grad students

The book is intended as a very general review. Your knowledge of organic chemistry should be very in depth before purchasing this book and intending to get anything out of it. The book doesn't really take time to explain anything in depth but rather just applies principles to complicated drug molecules and applications relating to biology.
The book also has no practice problems, as it considers you to have that knowledge down already.
All in all, a useless text for grad students. Stick to your undergrad o-chem books for trying to learn anything related to o-chem principles. Use this for some worthless but interesting examples of how o-chem principles and mechanisms are used in drug design and interaction with biological systems.

Good for connecting o-chem with biological aspect but not for acquiring basic understanding

This texbook as previously mentioned by someone gives you a really general view of o-chem principles and reactions. It's unfortunately wiritten for student to learn, not to understand the mechanistic approaches. I would recommend it for biochemists and pharmacists that already have the basic knowledge of o-chem and they want to review certain reactions and connect them with biological/biochemical/pharmaceutical point of view. All in all good book but a little bit too condensed for solid understanding. By my experience (i'm a pharmacy student) I tried to learn o-chem from this textbook but ended up studying from Clayden's, as it turned out that Dewick's textbook didn't even have all the chapters our professor wanted us to learn/undersand, and Clayden's was (in spite of that its longer) just easier to understand. Also it bothered me that it's visualy really boring, without any colors and summary boxes.
