Hidden Threads: A Christian Critique of Sociological Theory, provides a framework for making sense of the social world. Heddendorf finds in sociological theories some 'hidden threads' - Christian principles woven into the fabric of society. Early Christian thought was radical in its approach to social life. Jesus provided a different concept of the person, and encouraged his followers to act upon this new understanding. Thus, in the early centuries after Christ, Christian social thought was a dynamic, positive, social force, but today the situation differs. Many Christians readily accept current interpretations of problems as valid. Consequently, in response to these modern explanations, Christians develop a form of secularized thought which supports popular solutions and fails to critically engage with the real issues of the day. Hidden Threads is an examination and Christian critique of sociological theory, demonstrating appreciation for the richness of social life and holding in tension those theories that attempt to explain it.

Review
Neither an apologetic for Christianity nor an attack upon it. Its main focus is the contributions Christianity and social thought make to each other…clarify[ing] the virtues and shortcomings of both…An outstanding contribution to both sociology and Christianity. It will enrich social theory, generate significant research, encourage meditative reflection, enliven the interactions of Christians with sociologists, and stimulate the mind of every reader. (David O. Moberg, emeritus professor of sociology, Marquette University)
An excellent addition to the Christian classroom…These critiques offer unique opportunities for students to critically examine the different theories from a biblical viewpoint. (Susan Warner, associate professor of sociology, Cedarville University)

exposed truth
By d.s.
Hidden Threads is really helpful to read as a Christian sociologist. Not only does it explain social theories well (and in easy to read language), but it also emphasizes the importance of looking at and living in society as people of God who are called to bear the image of Christ. Hidden Threads reminds us that ideologies and bases of 'truth' are often built upon human meanings instead of God's truth. It is a helpful and reassuring book for Christians to read because it encourages us to continue to study sociology, but to pay close attention to God's calling as we seek to live in this world as his people. It reinforces the call to 'be in this world, but not of it.'

A Great Read
By T. A. Shelton
A good read for anyone interested in the theoretical framework behind sociological research. Though it says "Christian Critique" in the title, in actuality Heddendorf goes so much farther. Indeed, Hidden Threads does a better job than many ordinary textbooks in laying out the fundamentals of different sociological theories, and in crisp, concise language that the casual reader can readily understand. Christian students of studying any kind of social science should at least give this book a skim. Even non-Christians may find this book useful, if only for Heddendorf's compact but informative summaries of different theories.

A Textbook that is Not a Textbook
By M. F. Roberts
Using Hidden Threads in my contemporary social theory class was one of the best decisions my professor could have made. In comparison to other social thought readers and textbooks, this book lacks the dry, drawn-out complexity of theory; instead, the authors clarify and organize its content into easy-to-follow subheadings while maintaining the richness of the theories. Heddendorf and Vos also contribute a Christian perspective and critique in each chapter, finding small "hidden threads" of Christianity and social theory interwoven together. It is a "textbook" truly worth any reader's time.
