Short, Thought-provoking, and Enjoyable Poems
By John C. Legg
I liked! Found Shaker (1983) (at the goodwell). Haven't read poetry in years. I have summaried some of the poems based on what they mean to me. My meanings may not be correct or could be entirely different from what you may think they mean. Memorable poems for me are *****ed.
A good Woman feeling Bad - Despair. In a blue funk.
***** The Health-Food Diner - Funny. A song to all those carnivores out there.
A Georgia Song - Bittersweet. Remembering the South, good, the not so good, past wrongs, and new dreams.
Unmeasured Tempo - Sad. Too little to late. Acting to late or not big enough.
***** Amoebaean for Daddy - Deeply sad. Disrespect shown to a husand/father by the females in his life.
Recovery - Uplifting. Don't let failure stop you from stepping into the light.
Impeccable Conception - Weird/no sure what is meant. Inspiration from non-inspiring events. Hiding from life? Creating art?
***** Caged Bird - Hope, dream, persist. When you're not free, all you can do is sing of freedom.
Avec Merci, Mother - Strange. Any mother's feeling toward her child and the child's father? Mary sees Jesus crying sees God.
Arrival - Strange/weird expectation. Electric homecoming just beyond the door.
A Plagued Journey - Discourged. Night into Day into Night. Cycling: Hope Despair Hope Despair. . .
Starvation - Desperation. Implore good to come in because kids are hungry and rent is due.
Contemporary Announcement - There will be good times and bad.
Martial Choreograph - Youth, preocupied, and unfamiliar with failure - show me too how to be like you.
To A Suitor - Advice: Persist and you'll be rewarded.
Insomniac - Can't sleep.
***** Weekend Glory - Work, pay bills, fun on weekends.
***** The Lie: Not expressing your true feelings so as not to influence someone you care for. No big deal if you leave me.
The Last Decision. Death's a coming. Dark. Too dark. Can't: see, eat, hear, and lastly live.
Slave Coffle (coffle - a chained line of animals, slaves, etc.) - Hard times. Just beyond reach: comfort, quenched thirst, and love. Now beneath my walking: long hard times, unpleasantness, and no hope. Then before dawning: overwhelmed, dreaded, and death.
***** My Life Has Turned To Blue - Like the county song "Don't It Make my Brown Eyes Blue". I like this poem. At first I thought it was about getting old, permanent loss, possibly death, but the last verse implies that things will get better, go back to what they once were, with the passage of time. I like the blending of colors: Verse 1: golden, rosy, gray, and blue. Verse 2: green to dew, red done flew, left alone to blue. Verse 3: good news, winter, spring, summer's due, BUT until I see you: green grass turned to blue.
