Lewis Morgan is stationed in the German city in 1946. He requisitions a house for his family, but instead of casting out its German owners (the standard procedure), he allows them to remain. Brook's chilling observations of Hamburg's defeated inhabitants and the fantastic destruction that lay all around are unnerving and riveting. This precisely written novel is loosely based on events in which the English author’s forebears were involved. In the immediate aftermath of WWII, as the victorious Allies partition and independently administer a Germany in ruins, English Army Colonel Lewis Morgan, joined by his wife, Rachael, and young child, Edmund, is assigned to take over the luxurious Hamburg home of Stefan Lubert and his teenage daughter, Freda. Rather than displacing them, Morgan generously, though inexplicably, encourages them to stay on and live upstairs, sharing the capacious residence. This is an uneasy arrangement, exacerbated by domestic stress and war-related bitterness: Rachael and Freda still harbor deep resentments, having lost in the bombings, respectively, a son and a mother. Further, the devastated North Sea city is home not only to the occupying British and the defeated, not always “clear” (of Nazi taint) Germans, but also to feral children roaming the streets, and members of a group ironically characterizing itself as the Resistance, “those who have not yet admitted defeat.” In this unique historical novel, Brook plays these elements out dramatically and, for the most part, credibly. --Mark Levine

To the victors the spoils

I enjoyed this novel a great deal; primarily because its setting was immediate post-war Germany, a time and place unfamiliar to me as the setting for a novel, but also because the writing is unfussy but elegant and the characters were well drawn, having the ring of truth about them.
The book opens in 1946 when a British officer, Colonel Lewis Morgan, begins to take up his post in Hamburg as part of the British occupation force supposedly supervising the restoration of Germany and its de-nazification. Whilst Morgan is sympathetic to the devastated population, barely subsisting on a diet Oliver Twist might have turned his nose up at, some of his subordinates are less so, particularly exemplified in the form of the brutish military intelligence officer, Major Burnham.
But the story is really about the dehumanization of war and the re-humanization and `accommodation' of former combatants. This is quite literally true in the case of the Morgans - the colonel's traumatized wife, Rachael, and their surviving 11 year old son, Edmund, join Morgan shortly after he takes up residence in a large and well-appointed house belonging to a relatively wealthy German family, the Luberts, which has been requisitioned for them in advance. Although, well within his `rights' as the senior army officer in charge, Morgan cannot bring himself to turf out, from their home, Herr Lubert, a `war widower', and his 16 year old daughter, Freda, and proposes, since the house is more than big enough, that the two families share it, something highly unorthodox in the context of the time.
Thus, a kind of strained accommodation begins and it is the progress with which this occurs that is skilfully and sensitively charted through the rest of the book as the house's occupants begin, gradually, to learn the meaning of `entente cordiale'.

Post World War II on a personal level

The Aftermath tells the story of the trauma of rebuilding Europe, the continent, and Europeans, the people, after WW II, from the macro-level, i.e., the lives of two families, one British, the other German, who must share a home in Germany as Colonel Morgan and his family, a British officer assigned to help 're-educate' and 'restore' a devastated Germany, live with a German family in the same house. It was a common occurrence that the Allies would requisition the homes of Germans while they occupied Germany after the War (where else could they stay?). When you consider the personal experience of the British in WW II, it's not surprising that the Morgan family would be harsher towards the Germans than, say, the Americans, as the civilian population had to endure the bombings by the Luftwasse. But Morgan's humanitarianism compels him to offer the German family a chance to remain in the house if they're willing to live with his family. But this altruism isn't necessarily met by warmth or appreciation. There are still German nationalist feelings at work, particularly vivid in Lubert's daughter, and the Germans must live, scrounging for food and attempting to prove they weren't Nazis so as to get work permits--not that I particularly feel sorry for them. There are also the German 'underground' that thought it might somehow resurrect the Nazis or at least save some face by sabotaging the Allies efforts. Not that I could feel much sympathy for them. This is a fast read; the story moves quickly, and luckily there aren't long dull domestic scenes that could have made this a dull portrayal. To see cinematic displays of post WW-II Germany that reveal some of the same themes, I'd recommend the films of R. Fassbinder, who made a number of them--from an eerie German perspective.

Unputdownable

I read this book in two sittings and was enthralled by the story and the characters. Brook is a master story teller and his prose is perfect. I knew nothing of the conditions that existed in Germany post WW2 and was duly educated as I read. Just what I love in a book!
