Keith Drury is the author of Holiness for Ordinary People, Common Ground, and dozens of other books on practical spirituality. He teaches Christian ministry at Indiana Wesleyan University.
David Drury is the author of SoulShift, Being Dad, Duckville and The Fruitful Life. He has planted churches in Illinois and Indiana and currently serves as Chief of Staff in the Wesleyan Church.

Great Discussion on Intergenerational Change

I think every pastor would benefit from this book--along with anybody else who thinks seriously about the massive changes that are happening in the church.
While the book is directed specifically at issues affecting The Wesleyan Church, the dynamics of intergenerational change are similar in other denominations.
Keith and David Drury have written a father-and-son dialogue on the generation shift that is now taking place (from baby boomers to Gen X and Y), each representing a generational point of view.
Worship, conversion, community, race, heaven, holiness, alcohol, the role of women in leadership--there is hardly an aspect of church life in which we are not seeing a change in approach from one generation to the next. In general, the authors do a good job of representing the values of their generation.
The value of the book is that it helps people who hold differing opinions about these subjects to hear the other's point of view. Often enough, there is no disagreement on essentials. It seems to be strategetics (heh, heh) which drive us apart.
The weakness, I think, is that neither writer explores the effect that life stage (regardless of generation) has on one's point of view. Will Gen X, Y, Mosaics hold the same views they now hold in 30 years' time? Or will they shift to defending the establishment (cool boomer word, huh?) as their parents did?
The book points to the need for intergenerational dialogue--and provides a format for creating it. Discussion questions accompany each chapter, and the book includes a discussion leader's guide.
