In this accessible narrative, historian and folklorist Hurst charts the company's output from its founding in 1935 through its demise in the late 1950s and considers its impact on American culture. This revised edition of a work originally published in 1979 contains a new introduction and epilogue and features the addition of two chapters on serials. About the Author
Richard M. Hurst holds four degrees in history and folklore and was a museum administrator for over forty years before retiring in 2002.

Disappointment

This book started as a graduate school thesis. Footnotes and references that are dear to academics abound. There are numerous quotes from less-than-insightful authorities that would better have been left out.
The first chapter of the book, about the history (rise and fall) of Republic Pictures, is excellent. The rest of the book, not so. It is built largely around scholarly and reviewer comments, and plot summaries of serials and films that anyone familiar enough with Republic to buy this book should already know.
There are areas I'd like to know more about: What was the change in scripting that prevented Noah Beery from getting his on-screen comeuppance in "Zorro Rides Again?" Robert Livingston returned to the Three Mesquiteers series and replaced John Wayne, based, according to the author, on fan mail. I want to know more. The author says nothing about the reported bad chemistry between Livingston and Corrigan, except that Corrigan wanted a larger role in the series. Delete some of the scholarly comments and tell me what happened between Livingston and Corrigan.
The first chapter contains an analysis of the way Republic understood, endorsed, played to, grew on, and contributed to the growth of America's sense of itself at the time. It is absolutely first rate. However, as mentioned above, that's in the first chapter.

This proved to be a worthless buy! No one photograph in what screamed for them. And the price was totally rediculous. If I hadn't written the purchase info on the back of the front cover, I would return it!! I would never buy this book again. That is the advantage of viewing the book before you buy it!!
