Amazon.com Review
Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 1998 John Hume is a founding member of Northern Ireland's Social Democratic and Labour Party and has been a leading figure in the decades-long struggle to bring peace to that region. As he discusses in A New Ireland, his approach has been greatly influenced by the nonviolent direct actions of civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. He calls upon both Protestant and Catholic Irish to follow another example from American democracy, that of "unity in diversity." The conflict in Northern Ireland, he writes, is that between two groups of men and women, the Nationalists and the Unionists, "who have been trapped by a tragic error of history which saw their hopes and fears as mutually exclusive and irreconcilable within an Irish state, but which obliged them to live and compete side-by-side in one small corner of Ireland. These two communities ... have both behaved like threatened minorities and only by removing the fears which they both feel can a just and durable solution be found."
But it will not be enough, he adds, to bring "peace" to Northern Ireland. A united Ireland must also be thoroughly integrated into the relational networks that pervade Europe (and the rest of the global economy), and provided with the means with which to exercise its self-determination in order, Hume hopes, to "find its peace in a new Europe and, in so doing, find its place in working for a better world." His writings here speak both to his visionary ideals and his courage to see them through.
Review
No one in the world has a longer or braver history of opposing terrorism than Hume, and no one has more to teach on the way to do it. (James Carroll The Boston Globe)
This book will reinforce the belief that Hume, perhaps the most talented politician of his era, should continue to be listened to . (Niall O'Dowd The Irish Voice)
From the Back Cover
Throughout twenty-five years of conflict in Northern Ireland, John Hume has been the constant beacon of reason. A New Ireland is John Hume's remarkable story of his personal struggle for civil rights, peace and prosperity for all the people of Ireland. Born in 1937 into a working class Catholic family in Derry, Hume presents vivid memoirs of his youth, family and Catholic Nationalist community. He goes on to explain his political philosophy and examine the historical positions of the parties to the conflict: British and Irish, Unionist and Nationalist. For the first time ever, Hume relates the inside story of his historic meetings with Gerry Adams which eventually led to the 1993 Joint Declaration by Britain and Ireland and the 1994 ceasefire by the IRA and Unionist paramilitaries. He concludes with his assessment of the prospects for a lasting peace in Ireland and his unique vision of an international Irish nation.

A framework for true reconciliation in Northern Ireland
By A Customer
John Hume is a virtually unknown figure in the United States, but he has been steadily gaining recognition due to his work in the Northern Irish peace agreement. This recognition is overdue and much deserved. This monumental book outlines Hume's political philosophy - a philosophy which seeks to brush aside the vengefulness and intransigence of Northern Ireland's past, searching instead for reconciliation through justice for all. Hume is heavily influenced by Matin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, and quotes from these two figures flavor Hume's text. Hume's themes may seem repetitive, and his ideas seem to be based on the shakey foundation of human progress, but this work demonstrates that he is a champion for for a true peace in Northern Ireland - a peace that is just for all.

Hume's message - reconciliation, inclusion, respect and peace
By John Paul Nelson
I grew up in Belfast, and always had a lot of respect for the SDLP - initially Gerry Fitt and then John Hume being my political heroes. The book sets out with clarity mapping the real world experiences of John Hume and the progress - or maybe that should be regress - of the troubles in Northern Ireland. This book should be compulsory reading for kids growing up in Israel and Palestine, and probably Darfur and other regions of unrest. And of course, in Washington DC as well. Acheiving peace is not easy and does not come from the barrel of a gun. I don't recall the exact quote, and a friend is reading the book now, but it is along the lines of "Victory does not bring about peace - it simply puts it off". Never a truer word was said.
