Il grande editore Ulrico Hoepli aveva già introdotto sul mercato librario numerosi manuali di grandissimo successo, quando nel 1899 decise di dedicarne uno al fenomeno “Automobile”, mezzo di trasporto che si stava imponendo in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. Proprio in quegli anni veniva fondata la FIAT, mentre altre realtà automobilistiche italiane, di cui in parte si è persa memoria, erano già operative. Fino a quel momento erano stati comunque Francia, Germania e Stati Uniti a ottenere i più significativi successi industriali.
La parte pratica del suddetto manuale riguardava tra le altre cose gli aspetti legati ai vari tipi di motorizzazione, spiegando perché il motore a combustione interna si stava definitivamente affermando rispetto ai motori a vapore e a quelli elettrici. Questa sezione era di fatto anche una sorta di guida all’acquisto, elencando i requisiti fondamentali che un’automobile doveva avere.
