Stolorow, Ph.D., is a faculty member and training and supervising analyst at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles; a core faculty member at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, New York City; and clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine. George E. Atwood, Ph.D., is a core faculty member at the institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, New York City, and professor of psychology at Rutgers University. The Intersubjective Perspective

The Intersubjective Perspective by Robert D. Stolorow, George E Atwood, and Robert Brandchaft is a must-read for any student hoping to work in the field, and any therapist or psychoanalyst already there. In this book, Stolorow Et Al present theories, concepts, and suggestions to better understand and interpret the psychodynamic relationship between therapist and client. The relational field of study has become more prevalent in the last several years, and this book delves into that process, and demonstrates a cogent explanation of how to understand and implement the proposed ideas.
Stolorow, building off of many of Kohut's ideas, and working closely together with others in the field, explains the use of new terminology and concepts in a user friendly way. His excitement and passion in what he is presenting is evident and contagious, and makes for an incredibly interesting read. The concepts are succinctly presented, well-thought out, and thoroughly explained with no room for misunderstanding or misinterpretation.
This book re-examines the basic tenets of psychoanalysis, and presents new ideas to enhance that process, both for the clinician, the client, and the frame in which the work is done. It offers new ideas into understanding how the relationship between clinician and client evolve, and how to use that relationship advantageously to help the client.
I cannot praise, nor recommend, The Intersubjective Perspective highly enough. Stolorow, Atwood, and Brandchaft's concepts are remarkable, well-thought out, and brilliant. A must read for anyone planning on going into the field, already there, or has more than a passing interest in the evolutionary process of relational psychoanalysis. I have not read a better book, and wish I'd come across it sooner.
