The Troubled Air: A Novel, by Irwin Shaw

Irwin Shaw’s provocative classic about courage and morality at the height of McCarthyism
Clement Archer, head of a popular radio show, faces a profound dilemma: Five of his employees stand accused of being communists, and a magazine threatens disclosure unless Archer fires each and every one. Despite his efforts to meet his own moral standards and avoid self-incrimination, Archer finds himself hounded from both ends of the political spectrum for his seemingly righteous actions. The Troubled Air, Irwin Shaw’s second novel, was published immediately before the author moved to Europe, where he lived for the next twenty-five years. The story remains a powerful portrayal of a good, decent man ensnared by the hysteria and cruelty of a dark period in American history.  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Review
“It has taken a writer as skillfull as Irwin Shaw to capture the personal drama involved in political decisions . . . Norman Mailer tried to deal with the same theme . . . and ended up with no more than a Marxist political tract. Shaw has been much more successful.” —Emmet Dedmon
“The Troubled Air is a lively editorial.” —The New York Times
“A very readable story . . . that moves one to a very real sympathy.” —The New Yorker

a courageous book
By Yukkiebeer
It is amazing that Irwin Shaw decided to write this novel in the era of the red purge, not long after the crazy era ended. I always learn from his book what being fair really means. It is a great loss that the novel is now out of print.

Shaw is a wonderful novelist, and his depiction here of the world ...
By George Pappas
I imagine that this is one of the most striking novels about the blacklist that has ever been written. Published in 1951, it details, albeit fictionally, the insidious methods applied against the unsuspecting by the perpetrators, without the revisionism that would come in subsequent tomes. There is no doubt here that there was a conspiratorial communist movement; the moral question is whether or not its followers had the right and reason to their beliefs. Shaw, via his surrogate, radio director Clement Archer, undoubtedly believes they did while not subscribing to them personally and ultimately finding them just as restrictive and threatening as the system they challenged. Clement and his family are caught up in a firestorm as he is found dispensable by both sides.

Shaw is a wonderful novelist, and his depiction here of the world of radio theatre as it and its inhabitants came to be torn apart by warring interests is vivid and gripping, a true page-turner.

It is amazing that anyone dared to write this book at the height of the "Red scare." It would have made a wonderful 50s film, although there was no way in hell Hollywood would have touched it at that time.

No walking of the Red carpet for this radio producer.
By DAMguitar
This is more for the fan of radio theater and the late Himan Brown producer of CBS Radio Mystery Theater (1974 to 1982) as well as earlier radio days. If you like Mad Men, you'll love the setting of this story because it takes place in NYC just after WWII. Its POV is in third person and Shaw is evidently very attentive to a characters thoughts and solely descriptive of action and places. The theme is Isben like where the producer, Archer Clement who is totally the main guy from Mad Men, faces a career ostracization when he supports his cast and crew in light of McCarthyism at the beginning of the Cold War, and struggles with it as the effects threatens his work and family life. I love the nostalgia of New York and getting some of the insights to the radio theater production, especially the music end. Shaw has all the elements of a catastrophe but turns the ending into a somber one.
