About the Author
Zane Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1872. He attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship where he became a dentist. However, his heart was not in dentistry, it was in writing. In 1905 he married Lina Roth. They had three children, and eventually moved to California where Zane could both experience the West and write about it. He was one of America's most prolific authors, writing almost 90 books. He died of heart failure in 1939.

What A Fishing Book Should Be

I knew this was going to be an excellent book even as I opened it for the first time. With the first sentence from Zane Grey's pencil you could feel the love of the sport exude from the writing--his passion, his enthusiasm, his need to tell these stories of the Gulf Stream, the rivers of the Everglades, and his adventure down an unknown jungle river. Not only are there the incidents which happen to them as they fish--the funny, the serious, and the exciting--but Zane Grey gives you the vivid descriptions of the area as no other author can. This is an exceptional book I highly recommend to anyone, not just a angler, which I am not, by the way, just a Zane Grey fan who has wanted this book for a long time.

A bit different

I love all of Grey's fishing books, and this is no exception. This one is unique in the sense that it is one half tarpon fishing and one half an account of exploring a wild jungle river in Mexico. Actually, the river trip is one of my all-time favorite stories from Grey. He pulls together an inexperienced young American and a recently-reformed alcoholic Mexican oarsman to undertake a dangerous wilderness river trip. Mayhem ensues: rapids, crocodiles, wild boar, jaguars, and TICKS! Just the description of ticks is enough to keep me out of the jungle forever...
