Tarzan the Untamed is a book written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the seventh in his series of books about the title character Tarzan. The action is set during World War I. While John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (Tarzan) is away from his plantation home in British East Africa, it is destroyed by invading German troops from Tanganyika. On his return he discovers among many burned bodies one that appears to be the corpse of his wife, Jane Porter Clayton. Another fatality is the Waziri warrior Wasimbu, left crucified by the Germans. (Wasimbu's father Muviro, first mentioned in this story, goes on to play a prominent role in later Tarzan novels.)

About the Author
Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) was an American author, best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres. Tarzan was a cultural sensation when introduced. Burroughs was determined to capitalize on Tarzan's popularity in every way possible. He planned to exploit Tarzan through several different media including a syndicated Tarzan comic strip, movies and merchandise. Experts in the field advised against this course of action, stating that the different media would just end up competing against each other. Burroughs went ahead, however, and proved the experts wrong—the public wanted Tarzan in whatever fashion he was offered. Tarzan remains one of the most successful fictional characters to this day and is a cultural icon.

Unexpected Delight

This is a great read if you are a fan of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs series. I was pleasantly surprised and will continue to purchase the on going saga. It should be read in the correct order, and everyone of them is available at Amazon.

Strange Edition

If, like me, you failed to notice in the Amazon description for this edition the image of the cover, it does not look like other Tarzan books, then you probably also failed to notice that the size is 8 1/2 by 11". This edition looks like it was hand typed and printed on an ink jet. That said, it seems to be complete with fewer typos than normally appear in the "real" paperbacks. It's not difficult to read, though at $10.00 it seems rather pricey for what you're getting, but, if Tarzan the Untamed is out of print, this is an okay way to go. (You could probably read it free on a Kindle, Nook or Iphone.)
As always with Tarzan books, try to suspend your hopefully enlightened views and realize these books were written long ago in a different time, and just get past, if you can, how poorly black people are portrayed. (In this title, Germans are also portrayed as evil, and though I'm no history expert, I think this was during the start of WW1.)
