La storia dell’Automobile visse nei decenni di fine Ottocento i suoi fermenti pionieristici più avvincenti. Il grande editore Ulrico Hoepli aveva già introdotto sul mercato librario numerosi manuali di grandissimo successo, quando nel 1899 decise di dedicarne uno a questa nuova rivoluzione in atto.
La parte del suddetto manuale relativa alle monografie delle automobili è una sorta di catalogo, che presentava su scala mondiale le caratteristiche tecniche delle prime storiche vetture. Alcuni marchi sarebbero poi arrivati fino ai giorni nostri, in particolare Daimler e Benz, prima separatamente, poi come unica azienda. Anche Peugeot aveva già messo su strada i suoi primi mezzi di trasporto motorizzati, mentre FIAT, Ford, Renault e altre case sarebbero arrivate di lì a poco. Altre grandi realtà dell’epoca hanno invece chiuso i battenti durante gli oltre 110 anni di storia automobilistica: le francesi Panhard & Levassor e De Dion-Bouton, l’americana Duryea, ma anche le italiane (o meglio torinesi) Ceirano e Lanza.
