Denes Striny's international singing career brought him to the major opera houses of the world in leading roles. Denes Striny is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Shaker Mountain Opera. He has sung leading tenor roles in many of the major opera houses in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. The best book on great singing.

I bought this book and am indelibly impressed by its author's generosity in sharing his knowledge of the head voice which makes you discover why the great singers sound the way they do. I read it up in one week: just couldn't put it down. This most inspiring book showed me a new way of singing. And best of all, made me recover my falsetto which I had lost more than 15 years ago due to someone's injudicious criticism that falsetto is wrong singing, which actually happened to me: singers blindly trust a teacher hoping all dreams will come true. This is one thing discussed in the book too.
After having read a myriad of books on voice and vocal technique by a number of authors, I can say this book is a turning point. I was really fulfilled. I have just started singing in my head voice, and the results are showing beautifully. With Striny's directions on the head voice I accomplished such a lightly produced, easy resonating voice that I was surprised to hear the resonance of my voice filling my whole house. Also, my timbre took on a new beautiful personality. Wait, there's more to it, I started listening to and hearing the great singers in a completely different way, thus changing my own conception of great singing. Singing has become easy, supple, elastic and creamy. Also, it became a lot easier for me to sing coloratura and trills.
And my biggest surprise was that by reading the book for the second time, I still continued to discover new things and to understand others' singing and my own CLEARLY. I now understand what causes the pitfalls of any singer. Reading this book a second time shows how little we know of great singing and, conversely, how well you begin to identify the very nature of anybody's voice production, consequently using this skill to advantage. This is now my book of singing and I will reread it forever.
Having been a long-time friend and pupil of Birgit Nilsson's who taught him the ropes of head voice singing, Striny gives you these ropes in the book to you, to me, and to any frustrated singer in search of happiness through singing. This book can never get to be too much of a good thing and deserves all exposure it can get.

the greatest book on singing and tone production for wind players

This book is the wisest, most brilliant book ever written about singing and applies to tone production for wind players
as well. This is really the indirect Alexander technique decribed in the language of a singer and in fact Denes mentions Alexander and talks about the fact that he wasn't emotionally as invested in the "beauty" of the sound produced, he was more interested in getting his voice to work for him in a reliable fashion. I feel, this is really where Denes makes his contribution. He builds on the "indirect procedure" of letting your body find the way, but only of course if you really know what a beautiful voice is- yeah flute players- who is Jussi, Luciano, or Joan?? If you, singer or flutist or wind player, buy one book to help you solve technical or emotional problems because you are constricting the throat with excess air pressure this should be the book. The moment you open the book , it will take you into a world a divine sound not fraught with shrill, thin, sharp high notes. A must read!

Striny shares the best way to sing well - and for a lifetime

I'm delighted to be able to review this book, Head First, which has given me so much. Like others who have reviewed it, I appreciate the generosity of the author in sharing his discoveries. As a professional singer, I hit a wall, technically, and the easy way I had sung in the past was no longer accessible, or so I thought. Pushing, weight-lifting, expanding, and holding in the ways that the gurus were recommending were only making things worse. I ordered this book, after accidently discovering something about the quantity of air I used vs. the ease of singing pianissimos. The title "Head First" spoke to me. The very first time I read through it, I must admit, I didn't think much of it. Too simple, no meat in it, no "how to" miracles, diagrams of the larynx, etc. But something told me to pick it up again and re-read it. The second time, I was in tears with relief and gratitude. At last I could understand what parts of singing I HAD BEEN DOING RIGHT, before studying with "experts". I re-read the book several more times to be sure I understood what he was talking about, then went straight to work to find my head voice. It changed my life, and gave me such great confidence, especially since I'm not a young singer. My voice is as fresh as ever, more beautiful now, and I'm never tired after singing for hours. What joy! I only teach this method now, and it is a wonderful thing for my students - quick to learn because the results are evident right away. If you are a professional singer, and want to know how to ensure your career for a lifetime, you should read this book. But be sure you re-read it at least twice. Mr. Striny shares a lot of his own experiences, frustrations, and realisations, and each one serves as a lesson. His great friend, Birgit Nilsson, gives the forward, and her words on the subject are priceless. There are only a handful of exercises in the book, since most of the work is done best in your head, and with your ears. Happy singing!
