About the Author
Mary Lou Dickinson grew up in northern Quebec and has lived for many years in Toronto, where she worked as a crisis counsellor. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University and a Master in Library Science from the University of Toronto. Her fiction has been published in the University of Windsor Review, Descant, Waves, Grain, Northern Journey, Impulse, Writ and broadcast on CBC Radio. Her writing was also included in the anthology, We Who Can Fly: Poems, Essays and Memories in Honour of Adele Wiseman. Mary Lou's first book of short stories, One Day it Happens, was published by Inanna Publications in May 2007.

One Day It Happens

One Day It Happens, a short story collection, by Mary Lou Dickinson, is wonderful. They are stories of different people, women and men, and young and old. The love of Dick and Tony in "The Neighbors" is poignant. The death made me tearing. "The Empty Chair" has a humorous tone. When I read the following passage, "He rushed himself up to a standing position and shuffled across the room with one pant leg on and the other leg on the other off, like her son when he was a boy," I seemed to see a lopsided smile on the face of the protagonist, Margaret. "Hannah's Drawings" tells a story about death and friendship, music and drawings. The peaceful tone reminds me of a line by the Indian poet Tagore: "Let life be beautiful like summer flowers and death like autumn leaves."

Promising debut

This collection from May Lou Dickinson incorporates both recent work and some that was published as many as 30 years ago. Especially worthwile are "A Country Weekend" and "Hello Angel". The author is concerned with social issues and the stories often relate to these concerns. Some of the stories are as a consequence overly didactic. Still, the collection shows promise and offers many worthwhile moments.
