Signs of the Times

As one of the authors cited by the author, I couldn't agree more with the other reviewer. My name is dropped often in a context that doesn't match with what I said or meant. Also, there is some bouncing around from idea to idea without consideration for historical context. For example, by the 1930's many scholars had borrowed ideas from Peirce. Dewey borrowed from James who borrowed from Peirce and so forth; not the other way around. In other words, Peirce's ideas came before the 1930'S scholars. Finally, I am not sure what the purpose is of this book.

Name Dropping Incoherence

I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am in this book. I was hoping for an intelligent discussion of Peirce's thought and its possible applications to sociological theory. Unfortunately the author lacks any kind of coherent analysis of either Peirce or social theory. There is an almost schizophrenic jumping from subject to subject without actually analyzing the pop theories that he is so apt to quote. Almost every page is simply a recitation of quotations from various unrelated famous theorists and philosophers. If I had wanted to only read what they have to say then I'd read them. To make matters worse you can find references to Peirce, Durkheim, Weber, and Derrida all within a sentence without actually discussing any kind of relevance they may have to each others thought. Name dropping is all it is. I'm seriously wondering if all the blame should be put on the author or on the publisher. This book needed at least an editor if not a reviewing committee that actually reads the book. Sad.
