Review

“A significant contribution. The 1970s and onward were times of great expansion and change in the ar-chaeological discipline in the United States. Prentiss tells two stories. One is a very personal story of her path through archaeological training and becoming a professional. The second story is more general in that it conveys the larger trends in theory, practice, and career opportunities that this period of change and expansion created. She weaves the personal and the larger context together masterfully.”—William H. Doelle, Desert Archaeology, Inc.

“There ought to be more books like this that discuss the wider social context of our profession, and more academic archaeologists like Prentiss who have experience of life outside academe, given how much such personal, social, and environmental circumstances influence the questions that we ask about the past.”—American Antiquity

“Field Seasons will be of interest to archaeologists across the field—as essential reading material for students considering career options in archaeology; as an ethnography of the contemporary practice of archaeology and therefore useful for classroom discussion; as a retrospective on the discipline for practitioners from across sectors of North American archaeology; and as a good read for anyone involved in a field-based disciplines or curious about the life of an archaeologist.”—Canadian Journal of Archaeology

A personal book elicits a personal reaction
By G. McC
Field Seasons by Anna Marie Prentiss is an interesting window into the work activities of a neighboring department to my undergraduate major. Even in this age that touts multidisciplinary studies, departments tend to keep to themselves. Here then is a personal look into the life and work of an archaeologist.

The book is at its best, and most entertaining, in describing excavation sites and field work. But I must admit to wondering whether some of the more adventurous tales may be exaggerated. Theory is never discussed in such a way as to overload the reader with jargon. For instance, Prentiss describes the different forms of evolutionary theory and how the evolutionary archaeologists battle the behavioral ecologists (pp. 99-103). In addition, the application process for federal permits (p. 60ff) showed one aspect of archaeology that many may find unfamiliar.

Field Seasons is such a personal book some names and organizations had to be changed—“During the final throes of Ph.D. dissertation edits I was hired to become projects coordinator at Jack Sharp’s consulting firm, *which I will call Wyoming Archaeology*” (p. 66). However, being such a personal book, the reader is allowed to have personal reactions to the author’s personality, choices, and actions. I found a lot of distasteful actions on the part of Ms. Prentiss. On page 12 she writes, “Early in my career I learned that archaeologists could be a pretty hard-drinking lot.” She then describes a party where, presumably, she has consumed a lot of alcohol and gets into a bad accident with a white sedan. She lost her left eyelid to the windshield and had operations to her thighs and multiple lacerations. At no time does she mention what happened to the other driver. At no time does she indicate remorse for this incident. She does not write that she was drinking, but alcohol consumption was the context to her story. Given the seriousness of such an incident, she should have been clear on whether or not there was alcohol consumption. If not, then she should have clearly said so. As written, it comes off that she had. Later, she writes about a friend named Riley who drove around in a “giant, black, iron car out to the site every day and menacing the other drivers on the road.” She then notes, “One day someone actually hit him; the poor woman’s front end was completely crumpled, and the iron machine barely registered a scratch. I guess they don’t make them like they used to” (p. 22). In this vehicular incident alcohol was not involved but again Prentiss shows no concern for the other driver. Instead, this man menacing drivers is something she seemingly finds humorous. Only when alcohol affects her work efficiency does she not find it funny (see pp. 158-159). The author’s career is the study of humanity but the question should be raised about how one can study humanity and be so indifferent to others. I really hope I have misread her indifference, but that is how she comes off in this book. When Prentiss discusses ethics on page 66 I had to laugh since she presents some rather distasteful behavior throughout the book with a tone of jocularity. Archaeology is more than a descriptive discipline: it is both descriptive and interpretative. To what extent, then, do the archaeologist’s presuppositions—particularly their morality—influence interpretation? The danger of writing such a person book is that the reader can react rather negatively to the personality of the author. Prentiss provides an insider’s look into archaeology but perhaps she has revealed more than necessary.
