About the Author
Dr. Althea Horner is an Honorary Member of the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and a Scientific Associate of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. She is listed in Who's Who in America and has been writing and articles and books for forty years. While Dr. Horner has retired from clinical practice, she continues to write in Pasadena, California.

A brilliant resource for psychoanalytcally oriented psychotherapists.

This is a wonderful synthesis mainly based upon Margaret Mahler's separation individuation theory and Freud's drive structural model as well as paying respect to the work of the British object relations theorists and Kohut's psychoanalytic self psychology. It is a truly integrative framework for psychoanalytic theory and therapy and quite suitable for those who works with people with severe and enduring mental health issues.
I was fortunate enough to come across this book in the early 1980's when I was starting my career in psychotherapy/psychiatry The ideas within this wonderful book became embedded within me because of their accuracy and resourcefulness in assessment of character structure and understanding of clients underlying dynamics.
I have since read a number of the author's other books including 'Psychoanalytic Object Relations Therapy', 'Being And Loving' and the very brilliant 'Primacy Of Structure'. I'm reading her work again and loving every page.
Althea J Horner wrote in a very clear and accessible style, her work is an outstanding contribution to psychoanalysis.
