The College Student's Guide to the Law: Get a Grade Changed, Keep Your Stuff Private, Throw a Police-Free Party, and More!, by C. L., III

Knowing how to post bail and get out of jail in fifteen minutes is darn handy for almost everyone. For a disoriented 18-year-old who's found himself in a pinch, it's downright necessary. College kids are naïve, eager, and prone to trouble, and whether they're funneling beer or fighting sweatshop labor, they need to know their rights. Just logging onto the university computer system, for example, opens a student to a host of legal questions about whether the school can monitor her email or her surfing habits or her blogs. But the amount of practical legal information available to the nation's 15 million college students is extremely limited and most students don't have ready access to lawyers. What they need is a handbook that will cover the issues they're likely to confront, a guide that is informative, easy to read, and not embarrassing to have on their shelves.
With a retro look and a humorous, approachable tone, THE COLLEGE STUDENT'S GUIDE TO THE LAW provides legal explanations, strategies for steering clear of problems, and detailed instructions about how to deal with the authorities—both educational and municipal—when trouble can't be avoided. The book is divided into sections for easy access to information: "The Law in the Classroom" offers guidance on academic dishonesty, grading grievances, and professor-student relations. "The Law On Campus" discusses problems outside the classroom but on university turf, from privacy rights (whether in the dorms, on a hard drive, or in the Registrar's Office) to interactions with campus security. "The Law Off Campus" provides advice on dealing with legal issues that are endemic to university life such as underage drinking policies, landlord-tenant disputes, and credit-card use and abuse.
THE COLLEGE STUDENT'S GUIDE TO THE LAW ranks with the shower caddy, the extra-long twin sheet set, and the mini fridge as an absolutely indispensable item for every college freshman. And every returning student who might contest a grade, plan a campus protest, or sign an apa

Review
Better (and easier to stay awake through) than an introductory course on U.S. constitutional history, "The College Students Guide to the Law" is a helpful handbook for keeping your record clean―in and out of the classroom...Lindsay tempers his advice with plenty of wisecracks, which may set him apart from your overly serious professors. (Holly Thomas The Review of Higher Education)

This entertaining and hilarious read offers straight and honest facts about many legal issues without all the complicated legal jargon. (Contra Costa Times)

"...'The College Student's Guide to the Law' may just be the most popular book on campus this fall...Lindsay uses a relaxed, humorous tone to discuss such weighty topics as grade changes, cyber issues and harrassment." (Kevin Clapp The Press Of Atlantic City)

"With practical tips on how to interact with the police, a breakdown of a student's constitutional rights and instructions on how to deal with harassment, sexual assault and other crimes on campus, Lindsay gives students the tools they need to stay clear of trouble and make the most of their college years." (Abby Plessner Book Page, (Circ 500,000))

"The College Students Guide to the Law by C. L. Lindsay III promises to preare students for circumstances never covered by their high school counselor...What better way to pass our nation's litigiousness on to the next generation?" (Monique Beeler Oakland Tribune)

A compendium of information about students' legal rights and the consequences of breaking different laws... With its irreverent tone and pop-culture references, the book speaks the language of today's students. (Jamie Schuman The Chronicle of Higher Education)

“…C.L. Lindsay has been helping college students out of legal jams for the past six years with his CO-STAR (Coalition for Student & Academic Rights) organization. Ten thousand calls a year prompted him to write [this book], covering everything from getting a grade changed…to throwing a fuzz-free soiree.” (Us News and World Report)

C.L. Lindsay III explores every possible legal snafu college students could find themselves in. He gives advice on not only how to deal with various situations but also how to avoid problems. Lindsay's surprising humor and a conversational tone, along with his knowledge of what college is really like for students, make the book both easy to read and apply to college life.

"Despite the rebellious title, the book is a straightforward guide to understanding student's legal rights."

Send your kids to college with a copy of this book
By A College Parent
I bought this for my son, who starts college this fall. Someone recomended it. I almost didn't buy it because I was worried about sending my kid to school with a book that tells him how to "get away with stuff". So I took a good look at it before I passed it on and saw that that's not really what it's about. There IS a chapter on parties. But that's only one part (and the alcohol information is, more than anything, simply realistic about what college students will run into). More than talking about getting away with things, it talks about being responsible and knowing your rights. It just covers areas that college kids will care about: i.e. parties, bad grades, etc. It also talks about a lot of less controversial topics: free speech, activism, dealing with landlords, computer use, harassment.

I hope my son doesn't get into any trouble at all while he's away, but if he does (and let's be honest, every kid gets into some trouble) I really want him to have access to the information in this book.

Finally, legal advice that is clear AND funny
By mcg
This is a comprehensive guide to every aspect of the law a college student will encounter. Without question most students and administrators will buy it for its chapter on Parties and the Police (a gem) and Sex; but don't miss out on the chapters on landlord/tenant relations, privacy, plagiarism and research, and intellectual property. Obviously, not even Lindsay can make the guidelines for conducting experiments on Human Subjects into light reading; but even this is refreshingly clear ---- and the rest of the book is (always) downright useful and (frequently) screamingly funny.

Great Read
By newton reader
I laughed out lout while reading this book. It was really funny, and also very informative. My son is still a few years away from college, but I will definitely give this to my nieces and nephews who are attending college this fall.
