Ruth has always stood firmly beside her upstanding, brilliant husband, Peter, the legendary chief of the Derry School for boys. Glancing at a paragraph or a page of Brown's (The Rope Walk) torpid novel might give an impression of glinting pathos and well-rendered nostalgia, but, though well-written on a sentence-by-sentence level, it falls short as a whole. Ruth, preparing for the last first day of her husband's tenure as headmaster at a New England boarding school, looks back on their life together; their early marriage, their fights, her struggle to fit into her role as headmaster's wife. She reflects on their gradual aging and her resentment over their imminent ouster from the school. In between these reminiscences, the plot crawls forward: it take Ruth 50 pages to progress from dressing herself and readying the house for a party, to leaving the house, another 50 pages to get through the dinner and speech that will precede the party. When hints of tragedy and drama are introduced, they are too late or too overwhelmed to be anything but odd distractions. A later section in the book in which Ruth relates her terrible childhood and her youthful encounters with Peter is much more sequential and successful, but it is not enough to save this novel from the weight of its insistent poignancy. Real life, rendered beautifully

I found this book beautiful, heartwarming, and *real.* Yes, the protagonist had a hard childhood. Yes, she is looking back on her life as she ages, wondering whether she did the right things and whether she made a difference. But that's what actually happens in life. I cried at the end of this book, both at the tender ending, and at my own loss for not having more of it left to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the kind of fiction that makes you feel closer to your own humanity.

Gently Down The Stream

While reading this book, I am a passenger in a canoe being rowed down a placid stream of eloquently connected words. The oarsman so deft that the ride is smooth and continuous with never a disruptive splash or awkward lull. I meet Peter and Ruth and watch in awe as their story unfolds with layer upon layer of deepening understanding. Emotions are explored, scenes are set, lives intertwine and it is not until I turn the last page that I'm fully aware of the exquisite, grace-filled journey I've been privileged to experience. A beautiful book!

Examining the joys and pains of a lifetime.

Ruth seems distant from her surroundings as she reflects on the past fifty years she and her husband, Peter, have spent at the New England Derry school. The first ten years he was a teacher there and the following decades he served as headmaster. Ruth's supporting role as headmaster's wife may not be a paying position of employment but it does require a good bit of work and just as much dedication. They didn't have kids of their own but they were there for so many boys one school year into the next. Now retirement is approaching, this is Peter's last year as headmaster. It's no wonder that Ruth looks back and wonders if they made the right choices. What has she done with her life that is beyond being wife to the headmaster and then where are you both when the job is behind you? What do you have when you are done there if that is where you have invested everything?
The story is told in two parts and is all from Ruth's perspective. The beginning pages Ruth almost seems a step removed to me, I suppose that's because of how heavily she is contemplating. She wonders in a very natural way, what might have happened if different choices had been made? Whether life has turned out for the best or what dreams may have gone unfulfilled, the relationship between this couple is strong and passionate. I enjoyed the first half of the book though it was really part two that gripped me and really contrasts emotionally in comparison to the book's beginning. You can really get caught up in getting to know the younger Ruth as well as the earlier times of her relationship with Peter. Carrie Brown earns a full five stars in my opinion. Whatever you think you learn in part one, part two is much more revealing and filled with much more substance than I had expected. I will leave at that, don't want to risk spoiling!
