Jane Fitzwalter, Countess Ramsay, is tired of living a lie. While the rest of society might think she and her husband, Hayden, have the perfect marriage, Jane knows differently. It is true that the first few months of their marriage were some of the happiest days of Jane’s life. However, by the time Jane lost their third child in a miscarriage, Jane realized a marriage should be composed of more than just endless rounds of parties. After failing to convince Hayden to join her in taking a holiday from society, Jane sets out to build a new life for herself at her family’s small country estate. Three years later, just as Jane reaches the conclusion that divorce is the only practical solution to her problematic marriage, Hayden turns up at her door determined to win back her love. With its skillfully drawn characters and insightful look at a husband and wife trying to put their marriage back together, McCabe’s latest impeccably written Regency-era historical packs a stealthy yet powerful emotional punch. --John Charles

From the Author
I was so excited to find out this yearis the 200th anniversary of the publication of Prideand Prejudice! It wasdiscovering the world of Jane Austen that introduced me to thewonders of the Regency period. I found a battered paperback copy ofEmma tucked away on ashelf in my grandmother's house when I was about ten, and afterreading it immediately ran to the library to see what else thismysterious Jane Austen had written. The librarian gave me all theother novels as well as two Austen biographies and a book called Lifein Regency England. I washooked.
I've always lovedthe settings and themes of Austen's timeless stories--family,community, characters struggling to find ways to stay true tothemselves and still meet the expectations of the society aroundthem. Heroines determined to marry for love and find happiness inthe face of overwhelming pressure to find stability at all costs. It's been so much fun to explore the same ideas with the Bancroftsisters, Jane and Emma, and their handsome heroes! That's the bestpart of writing historical romance--exploring a world so differentfrom my own, but also so very similar in our emotions and dreams(just with better clothes!).
And I have JaneAusten--and the wonderful librarian who recognized a new Austenmania and helped me make it grow--for all those hours of delight andjoy. Happy anniversary, Lizzie and Darcy!

Refreshing read loved it!
By NODLA
Just finished reading the Runaway Countess and completely loved it! Can't wait to read about Emma! This book is right there with the Muses, one of my all time favorite sister's series. I love it when two such different personality types dance though the courtship of love! Refreshing to read about a troubled marriage instead of an innocent miss and a rakish hero. The characters were well thought of and the tension was high at times. Wonderful read with some colorful side characters that added to the drama. Loved it!

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!
By Amazon Customer
Ahh...what to say? I liked it in general. I just wish that one aspect was clarified. I do not know if he was faithful to her during their time apart??? He says over and over again that he was drinking and partying all the time but never mentions sleeping around. The heroine only ever mentions Lady Marlbury as someone she was jealous over and the past lover let's the heroine know that they have not been lovers since before the hero laid eyes on the heroine. For the heroine to have constant thoughts of whether he was with that lady or another, it should have been added. To me?? I seriously do not know. The Lady Marlbury was actually nice. I was shocked...she generally cared and did not want to interfere with their reconciliation. It was not her idea to go there at all and she tried to help the heroine protect her sister and understand her husband a bit better! The hero acts like a man in love and when his wife's name is mentioned you can sense his pain at not having her. When they started to make love again, he said her name like a prayer over and over again! He worshiped her. I do think that the revisited friends thing was a bit much. Why would he resort back to drinking with those people for no reason??? If those were the only people he drank and partied with, then I can say he was faithful to her and would like him a lot more!!! He was a bit of a disappointment because he went back to his old ways with no real reason too. I did not understand it at all. I do like David and Emma but fear that her anguish about men and the age difference will not work in the next book. It says that he is nearly 30 in this book to her 16, I am not sure what they will connect over but am hoping it works out! I would have given this a 5 star rating for the one sentence added in that he never slept with another!!

Struggling Love Story
By Janie_tx
Although I loved this story from beginning to end, it was a little confusing. The author drew the reader in from the beginning and allowed us experience her characters feelings as they struggle through the story. The story had intrigue, suspense, danger, mayhem, death, and romance. There were some explicit sexual scenes for those who mind them. In general the story is about a young married couple with different back grounds who marry with great expectations, mistakes are made, and the realization the life isn't what they expected. She comes from a loving family, close but with their problems and he comes from a totally different family unit with their own problems. If I understood correctly Hayden has several problems: father's criticism, mother comes across uninterested in him, she lives and enjoys the city life while his father enjoys the country life. A typical aristocrat marriage in those times, each having affairs, although the author doesn't say. So there was no closeness. What the author doesn't tells us is if Hayden is having affairs or dose he keep a mistress. She does tells us he had one before he married. She refers to his drinking, gambling, but never womanizing. The wife believes he is or images he is. Then when his wife loses the babies, he seems to stay away from her because he thinks of his mother's dying from childbirth as she tries to give his father another son.(What?) Hayden seems to have trouble separating himself from his old way of thinking and doesn't understand what his wife wants.. His wife at the end seems to forgive him and accepts he has changed or will try to change? Their relationship even at the end was undecided even with everything that has happened. Will he go back to his old ways when they return to London and his friends or not? Will she stay and endure the pain if he returns to his old ways of life or leave him again. I guess we don't what life holds for us with the exemption of the present. I gave the story four stars because the concept was good but some of the content was confusing.
